The Theological Origins Of Engineering, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2012

The Theological Origins Of Engineering, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Knowledge of our roots can sometimes help us figure out how we ought to proceed. Many claim that engineering began in ancient antiquity with the Egyptian pyramids, Archimedes' inventions, or the Roman aqueducts. Others give contemporary engineering a more recent history, tracing its origins to the Industrial Revolution or the Enlightenment. Yet what is often overlooked is the fact that contemporary engineering owes part of its identity to medieval monasticism.

The advantage of remembering this history is the bearing it has on the questions "What is engineering for?" and "How ought engineering be practiced?"

Michael Davis makes the claim that, …

The Socialization Of Students At A Midwestern College, Matthew S. Rader Jan 2012

The Socialization Of Students At A Midwestern College, Matthew S. Rader

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to understand and explain the overall culture and subcultures of Prairie College (a pseudonym) and how those cultures socialized students to persist or depart from the institution. In accordance with the higher education student retention theory and research of Braxton (2000), Kuh and Love (2000), and Kuh (2001), there is potential for an institution of higher education to serve and retain greater numbers of students when administrators understand the institutional culture (Morgan, 1996; Mintzberg, 1979; Spindler, 1988) in which they work as well as that of students they serve.

Qualitative research methods were used. …

A Ritual Investigation Of Sudden Death Events In An Urban United States Emergency Department, Mary Eleanor Mitsch Jan 2012

A Ritual Investigation Of Sudden Death Events In An Urban United States Emergency Department, Mary Eleanor Mitsch

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study investigated sudden death as a social act and a ritual process (Hertz, 1960) in an urban hospital emergency department (ED) in the United States. An analytical auto ethnographic approach was utilized by the author who is a nurse-anthropologist and a bereaved parent. In sudden and a more "prepared for" death, the dying person goes through a rite of passage van Gennep (1960[1909]) and enters into an area of liminality Turner (1967). A key transition from life to death occurs and crossing a threshold where the dying person cannot cross back. The aims of the study were to: 1) …

"Treating The Whole Person:" An Ethnographic Study Of An Integrative Medicine Pain Clinic, Lindsey Ann Martin Jan 2012

"Treating The Whole Person:" An Ethnographic Study Of An Integrative Medicine Pain Clinic, Lindsey Ann Martin

Wayne State University Dissertations

Although chronic pain has been increasingly recognized as a critical health issue in the U.S., solely biomedical approaches to pain management are often less effective than comprehensive ones in addressing this condition (Crowley-Matoka, et al. 2009; Good 1994; Greenhalgh 2001; Institute of Medicine 2011; Kleinman 1988; National Center for Health Statistics-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2006). This ethnographic study describes in-depth how a Detroit metropolitan area multidisciplinary pain clinic specifically applies an integrative medicine (IM) approach to the treatment and management of chronic pain. The aims of this study included: 1) identifying the history of this IM clinic and …

Fenced In/Out In West Texas: Notes On Defending My Queer Body, Ed Check Jan 2012

Fenced In/Out In West Texas: Notes On Defending My Queer Body, Ed Check

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this article, I utilize autoethnography to describe and reflect upon my experiences as a queer artist, associate professor, and activist living in West Texas (1996-2012). To date, I believe there exist too few testimonies in art education that document how queer educators/artists manage myriad social, political, and everyday issues in their lives and workplaces. Such stories are necessary if I am going to equip present and future art teachers with anti-homophobia classroom strategies. I believe such stories are also necessary to counter cultural homophobia and violence and let queer students and teachers know they do not stand alone. Stories …

Why More Christians Should Believe In Mary's Immaculate Conception, Jack E. Mulder Jan 2012

Why More Christians Should Believe In Mary's Immaculate Conception, Jack E. Mulder

Faculty Publications

In this paper, Jack Mulder, Jr. argues that those who hold 1) the major Christological and Trinitarian tenets of the historic Christian faith and 2) the view that original sin and its psychological consequences are in some way inherited and not learned (which includes a wide swath of leading figures in the historic Christian tradition) have strong reasons for why they should also hold that the Virgin Mary never received original sin (or its psychological consequences).

Influence Of Perceived Racial Discrimination On Health And Behaviour Of Immigrant Children In British Columbia, Anne George, Cherylynn Bassani, Robert Armstrong Jan 2012

Influence Of Perceived Racial Discrimination On Health And Behaviour Of Immigrant Children In British Columbia, Anne George, Cherylynn Bassani, Robert Armstrong

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

This study examines the influence of perceived discrimination on the health and behaviour of ethnic minority immigrant children in British Columbia, Canada. Using data from the New Canadian Children and Youth Study, we examine perceived discrimination experienced by the parent, family, and cultural group in Canada to test the influence of micro-, meso-, and macrolevels of discrimination on children. Families from 6 ethnic backgrounds participated in the study. Parents’ perceptions of the child’s health and six behavioral scales (hyperactivity, prosocial behaviour, emotional problems, aggression, indirect aggression, and a general combined behaviour scale) were examined as outcome variables. After controlling for …

Socially Including A 'Resistant People': Intercultural Education And The Roma In Italy, Mary Cristine Mcsweeney Jan 2012

Socially Including A 'Resistant People': Intercultural Education And The Roma In Italy, Mary Cristine Mcsweeney

Master's Theses

As "the situation of the Roma" in Europe has grown increasingly concerning, the European Union (EU) has urged Member States to promote the social inclusion of this diverse population. While the EU has challenged Member States to implement intercultural education, Italy has claimed its own "via Italiana" (or "Italian way") as to how it is going about this process. In an attempt to better understand intercultural education and the role of education in social inclusion projects, this paper aims to address the following questions: What are some of the implications of the intercultural educational initiative currently underway in Italy with …

'My Tomb Will Be Opened In Eight Hundred Years’: A New Way Of Seeing The Afterlife In Six Dynasties China, Jie Shi Jan 2012

'My Tomb Will Be Opened In Eight Hundred Years’: A New Way Of Seeing The Afterlife In Six Dynasties China, Jie Shi

History of Art Faculty Research and Scholarship

Jie Shi analyzes the sixth-century epitaph of Prince Shedi Huiluo as both a funerary text and a burial object in order to show that the means of achieving posthumous immortality radically changed during the Six Dynasties. Whereas the Han-dynasty vision of an immortal afterlife counted mainly on the imperishability of the tomb itself, Shedi’s epitaph predicted that the tomb housing it would eventually be ruined. This new, pessimistic vision of tombs was shaped by the experience people had in the Six Dynasties of encountering numerous ruined tombs in their daily life. To secure an afterlife for the deceased, they adopted …

How To Ask For A Favor: An Exploration Of Speech Act Pragmatics In Heritage Russian, Irina Yevgenievna Dubinina Jan 2012

How To Ask For A Favor: An Exploration Of Speech Act Pragmatics In Heritage Russian, Irina Yevgenievna Dubinina

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Heritage language (HL) is a linguistic system that arises in the context of early childhood bilingualism, both sequential and simultaneous, when one of the languages is not fully acquired. The performance of speech acts in HLs is yet to be understood, and this dissertation is a first step in this direction. The study investigates the pragmatic competence of adult Heritage Russian (HR) speakers dominant in American English by focusing on their ability to comprehend and produce requests for favor that appeal primarily to the addressee's good will.

The data were collected through a questionnaire and role-play enactments in nativespeaker (NS) …

Epilepsy Postings On You Tube: Exercising Individuals’ And Organizations’ Right To Appear, Lawrence A. Kerson, Toba Schwaber Kerson Jan 2012

Epilepsy Postings On You Tube: Exercising Individuals’ And Organizations’ Right To Appear, Lawrence A. Kerson, Toba Schwaber Kerson

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Philosopher Hannah Arendt maintains that everyone has the right to appear in public as an embodied, singular individual. Because of the stigma attached to epilepsy, many with this condition are denied this right. Using grounded theory techniques, the authors analyze uploads of epilepsy on YouTube. The authors argue that personal uploads on YouTube are the only mass media examples in which those with epilepsy can exercise their right to appear without the interpretation of intermediaries. Emerging themes relating to ”the right to appear” allow social workers to deepen understanding of this and other devastating, often invisible and sometimes life-threatening illnesses.

Recognition Of Palestinian Statehood: A Clarification Of The Interests Of The Concerned Parties, Winston P. Nagan, Aitza M. Haddad

UF Law Faculty Publications

This paper reviews the history of the claims to statehood and sovereignty of the Palestinian people, from the period of the League of Nations mandate to the current move to secure UN approval of a Palestinian State. The article examines the claims to statehood in international law and examines the problem in the broader context of claims about human rights and humanitarian violations, the Israeli claims to security and legitimacy and the US claims for its mediation goal to ensure that the problem does not descend into a legal vacuum in which the fundamental interests of all parties in security …

Moral Conversion, Liturgy And The Preface To Eucharistic Prayer For Reconciliation Ii, Thomas Ryan Jan 2012

Moral Conversion, Liturgy And The Preface To Eucharistic Prayer For Reconciliation Ii, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Anecdotal evidence suggests that, amongst the Eucharistic Prayers in the Roman Catholic liturgy, the laity find the Second Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation the most attractive. This article attempts to address the question: what is there about this Prayer that is so appealing and why? The focal point is the first thing people hear in this Eucharistic Prayer, namely, the Preface. There seems to be something special, if not unique, about the Preface to EP RII.

This article will focus mainly on the Preface of EP RII in terms of its theme, tone, tempo and as a template. In preparing to …

Reasserting Humanity Through The Liberatory Gaze, Melissa Crum Jan 2012

Reasserting Humanity Through The Liberatory Gaze, Melissa Crum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The act of critically looking can be a method used to consider alternative ways of conceptualizing marginalized cultures and ethnicities. By engaging in a series of inquiries about the subject of an image, the spectator can form a more comprehensive representation of the subject, thus preparing post-secondary students to discuss and interpret visual culture. From the perspective of an African-American female artist and educator’s travels to Brazil, this work proposes that a self-reflective educator’s personal narratives and insight can assist in creating an arts-based critically-thinking learning atmosphere. Such an atmosphere encourages students to move beyond the realms of their cultural …

Troubling The Victim/Trafficker Dichotomy In Efforts To Combat Human Trafficking: The Unintended Consequences Of Moralizing Labor Migration, Kay Warren Jan 2012

Troubling The Victim/Trafficker Dichotomy In Efforts To Combat Human Trafficking: The Unintended Consequences Of Moralizing Labor Migration, Kay Warren

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This analysis examines the violent predator/innocent victim paradigm employed by many governmental and nongovernmental organizations active in monitoring and combating transnational human trafficking. One common treatment of the issue moralizes victims as innocent women and children who have been deceived and coerced into exploitative sex work; another constructs human trafficking as modern day slavery which takes a variety of forms and requires foreign intervention to organize rescues and redemption. Both views see human trafficking, most especially sex trafficking, as an exceptional crime with distinct predators and victims and cultivate moral outrage as a strategic tool to combat coerced labor. This …

Adjudicating The Intersection Of Marital Immigration, Domestic Violence, And Spousal Murder: China-Taiwan Marriages And Competing Legal Domains, Sara L. Friedman Jan 2012

Adjudicating The Intersection Of Marital Immigration, Domestic Violence, And Spousal Murder: China-Taiwan Marriages And Competing Legal Domains, Sara L. Friedman

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Cross-border marriages and other forms of family reunification dominate officially recognized migratory flows around the world today, and they offer the most widely recognized path to naturalized citizenship in destination countries. At the same time, however, transnational marriages may also rest on shaky foundations precisely because immigrant spouses depend on their citizen partner for legal status. When marriages fail due to domestic violence, they expose the incompatibility of different legal domains organized around domestic violence prevention and immigration regulation. This Article examines the legal conflicts that emerged in response to a recent case in Taiwan involving an immigrant wife from …

Transnational Adoption And European Immigration Politics: Producing The National Body In Sweden, Barbara Yngvesson Jan 2012

Transnational Adoption And European Immigration Politics: Producing The National Body In Sweden, Barbara Yngvesson

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This article explores the role of transnational adoption in the production of a multicultural but Swedish national body during the second half of the twentieth and the first decade of the twenty-first century, when Sweden became a multiethnic, multicultural, and racially divided country. I examine the development of international adoption policies in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, emphasizing the erasure of the child's connection to a preadoptive past, even as the child's cultural difference was celebrated in adopting nations. In Sweden, which in the late 1970s and early 1980s had the world's highest adoption ratio (number of transnational adoptions per …

Due to the rapid of globalization in the Information Age, students must become adept at navigating the complex and ambiguous nature of the global business environment. One major roadblock for training students to become global professionals is the lack of international curriculum within Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology programs at leading post-graduate training institutions. This article examines the methodologies and best practices used in establishing an International I/O Psychology curriculum at the graduate level developed to train students to better understand and work within the complexities of the global business environment. In this article we discuss the process we used to identify …
