Making Use Of Hidden Data: Towards A Database Of Weather Predictors, Karen Pennesi Jan 2012

Making Use Of Hidden Data: Towards A Database Of Weather Predictors, Karen Pennesi

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Anthropologists often have interesting and valuable data that remains ‘hidden’ because it does not fit easily into conventional academic publishing formats. This article suggests that it is worthwhile to make use of this hidden data for the benefit of other researchers and the study communities. To illustrate, the article describes initial efforts to create an online database of traditional weather prediction indicators derived from observations of the ecosystem. The database was started with descriptions of more than a thousand prediction indicators used in Northeast Brazil, which were collected as part of a survey of farmers and ‘rain prophets’. It is …

Crossing International And Research Boundaries: From Subject To Author For An Authentic Refugee Portrait, Jasenka Besic, J. Lynn Mcbrien Jan 2012

Crossing International And Research Boundaries: From Subject To Author For An Authentic Refugee Portrait, Jasenka Besic, J. Lynn Mcbrien

School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

Scholars in training, including qualitative researchers, are often cautioned about their relationship to their research participants with the notion that “getting too close” can distort findings. However, with many participants, especially those with whom issues of trust are problematic due to their personal experiences, researchers cannot gain rich data without creating an authentic and close relationship. In this longitudinal study, a female Bosnian youth and an academic researcher grapple with issues of trust, friendship, and research in an effort to determine ways to create valid research findings over years of relationship building.

A Comparative Study Of English And Myanmar Syntax In A Narrative With A Focus On Sfpca Elements / Mya Tharaphi Wynn, Mya Tharaphi Wynn Jan 2012

A Comparative Study Of English And Myanmar Syntax In A Narrative With A Focus On Sfpca Elements / Mya Tharaphi Wynn, Mya Tharaphi Wynn

Student Works (2010-2019)

This research project examines the similarities and differences between English and Burmese with regard to the functions of SFPCA in clauses. Data for the study come from Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels in simplified English and its Myanmar translation. Analysis of SFPCA elements is based on Bloor and Bloor’s (2004) and Halliday’s (1994) Systemic Functional Grammar theories. Burmese is now officially called Myanmar language which belongs to Burmanic branch of the Tibeto-Burman family, a subfamily of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The English language, on the other hand, belongs to the Indo- European language family. In Myanmar, the kind of grammatical apparatus such …

The CRT project incorporates permaculture technology, wilderness medicine protocols, community organizing skills, and transnational advocacy competencies with traditional community knowledge to create a culturally specific training curriculum. Through the research process, community knowledge and …

Asymmetry Of The Humerus: The Influence Of Handedness On The Deltoid Tuberosity And Possible Implications For Osteometric Sorting, Carrie Brady Legarde Jan 2012

Asymmetry Of The Humerus: The Influence Of Handedness On The Deltoid Tuberosity And Possible Implications For Osteometric Sorting, Carrie Brady Legarde

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The identification of individuals from commingled human remains can be a difficult task. Osteometric sorting is often utilized for these purposes since it sorts remains based on size. This research investigates whether asymmetry of the humerus is present, if it is due to an individual’s hand preference, and if this asymmetry can adversely affect the osteometric sorting method. The osteometric sorting formulae for pair-matching was used to classify individuals as asymmetric when elements were considered significantly different in size. Significant asymmetry was seen in multiple measurements and the asymmetry could be due to handedness. This relationship appeared more consistent with …

Clothed With Salvation: The Garden, The Veil, Tabitha, And Christ, Daniel Belnap Jan 2012

Clothed With Salvation: The Garden, The Veil, Tabitha, And Christ, Daniel Belnap

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

Because clothing has a social function by which we define ourselves in relation to others, the rites of investiture and divestiture are often used within a given community as the individual moves from one social environment to another. These two rites can be used to examine the social progression of Adam and Eve via the fall, the symbolic movement from the mortal sphere to the divine sphere as represented with the veil, as well as the Christ-like nature of Tabitha who, like Christ himself, clothed others, thus giving them meaning and place within the community of believers.

Anarchism, Geography, And Queer Space-Making: Building Bridges Over Chasms We Create, Farhang Rouhani Jan 2012

Anarchism, Geography, And Queer Space-Making: Building Bridges Over Chasms We Create, Farhang Rouhani

Geography Articles

This paper examines the complex, creative, and contradictory processes of making queer space through an analysis of the rise and demise of the Richmond Queer Space Project (RQSP), a queer- and anarchist-identified organization in Richmond, Virginia, US. I begin by synthesizing emerging perspectives from anarchism, queer theory, and the conceptualization of queer space in geography. Then, I observe the practices through which RQSP members created a queer space; their location politics in a small-city context; and the contradictory politics of affinity and identity that led to the group’s demise. My goal is to seriously consider the complexities and contradictions of …

“The Play’S The Thing”: Theatre As A Scholarly Meeting Ground In Age Studies, Valerie Barnes Lipscomb Jan 2012

“The Play’S The Thing”: Theatre As A Scholarly Meeting Ground In Age Studies, Valerie Barnes Lipscomb

English Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

Addressing three current critical turns in gerontology, this article proposes the theatre as a fertile ground for various theoretical angles in age studies - including the performative on and off stage, the narrative in the script and the critical questioning of age and ageism in the multiple realities of performance. Beginning from a shared site in the theatre, researchers may be able to establish greater common ground, resulting not only in multi-disciplinary efforts but also in truly interdisciplinary work. With a foundation in performance studies, this article suggests promising directions for age studies and theatre scholarship by examining three aspects …

South Carolina Naval Wreck Survey, Christopher F. Amer Jan 2012

South Carolina Naval Wreck Survey, Christopher F. Amer

Presentations

From 1998 through 2003, the Maritime Research Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology (SCIAA) at the University of South Carolina (USC) conducted research into the presence of US Navy shipwrecks in South Carolina waters. The US Navy claimed 96 shipwrecks in the state. However, historical research confirmed that, in fact, only 47 Navy-owned vessels met their demise in state waters. The remaining shipwrecks include, US Army transports, vessels owned by the Confederacy at the time of their sinking, and a number of vessels that flew foreign flags. The United States Navy maintained a presence in South Carolina …
