The Anchor, Volume 125.13: January 25, 2012, Hope College

The Anchor: 2012

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Military And “Mob Rule”: The Cef Riots In Calgary, February 1916, P. Whitney Lackenbauer Jan 2012

The Military And “Mob Rule”: The Cef Riots In Calgary, February 1916, P. Whitney Lackenbauer

Canadian Military History

During the First World War, unruly and ill-disciplined Canadian soldiers, on “assorted ’patriotic’ pretexts,” damaged local property and battled with local police forces in Victoria, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Campbellton, New Brunswick, and other Canadian centres. The riots in Calgary in February 1916 involved members of Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) battalions encamped near the city. While historians have focused on the anti-German nature of the attacks, several other considerations must be examined to explain the unlawful behaviour. Although a court of inquiry into the riot failed to conclude who was responsible, the contemporary evidence suggests strongly that soldiers, rather than civilians, …

Story/Time, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity

Director and choreographer Bill T. Jones – whose major honors include a MacArthur “Genius” Award, the Kennedy Center Honors and two Tony Awards for Best Choreography – returns to the stage in a spellbinding new work. Story/Time finds Jones engaging in the beloved form of storytelling, offering glancing takes on ideas, feelings and impressions from his life. In previously celebrated works such as A Quarreling Pair and Blind Date, the brilliance of Bill T. …

A Postmodern International Business Communication Model In Three-Dimensions, Jane Thompson Johansen Jan 2012

A Postmodern International Business Communication Model In Three-Dimensions, Jane Thompson Johansen

Global Advances in Business Communication

Representational models of communication behavior have been created in the United States to describe specific communication problems since the early 1940’s when communication science was recognized as a separate social science. The three-dimensional model presented here describes the intricacies of 21st century international business communication. Its creation rests on three requirements demanded by current communication speed and technical communication capabilities. First, the model treats culture as a characteristic of communicators. Second, it discusses the dynamism or changes in communicators and the message itself. Third, it also describes the education of international communicators as they recontextualize their cultures to match each …

Beats That Commute: Algebraic And Kinesthetic Models For Math-Rock Grooves, Brad Osborn Jan 2012

Beats That Commute: Algebraic And Kinesthetic Models For Math-Rock Grooves, Brad Osborn

Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic

Math rock’s most salient compositional facet is its cyclical repetition of grooves featuring changing and odd-cardinality meter. These unconventional grooves deform the conventional rhythmic structures of rock, such as backbeat and steady pulse, in such a way that a listener’s sense of metric organization is initially thwarted. Using transcriptions from math-rock artists such as Radiohead, The Mars Volta, and The Chariot, the author demonstrates a new analytical apparatus aimed at making sense of the ways listeners and performers process these changing pulse levels: the pivot pulse. The pivot pulse is defined as the slowest temporal level preserved in a given …
