A Comparative Review Of “How To” Books For Parents Of Adhd Children And “How To” Books For Parents Of Typical Children, Bora Pajo, Paul H. Stuart Dr. Jan 2012

A Comparative Review Of “How To” Books For Parents Of Adhd Children And “How To” Books For Parents Of Typical Children, Bora Pajo, Paul H. Stuart Dr.

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Although an increasing number of children are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and take medications to control their behaviors, a well-publicized controversy persists about whether ADHD refers to a common neurobehavioral disorder of childhood or to various medicalized temperamental, educational, and cultural differences and difficulties of children. Moreover, behaviors indicative of ADHD are commonly found among all children—although with different frequencies. This paper aims to identify and compare the type of information provided to parents of ADHD and non-ADHD diagnosed children through readily available self-help books. Searches using popular online bookstores were conducted to rank and select the …

Conditional Love: Imitation, Inheritance And Violent Relations In Early Modern Revenge Tragedies, Megan Elizabeth Allen Jan 2012

Conditional Love: Imitation, Inheritance And Violent Relations In Early Modern Revenge Tragedies, Megan Elizabeth Allen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In "Conditional Love," I reread narratives that seem to confirm normative kinship structures as excessive iterations of their very normativity. Examining revenge tragedies by Shakespeare, Marston, Middleton, Tourneur and Kyd, I argue that the metaphors each playwright uses to portray familial emotions reveal the ideologies underpinning both excessive and normative versions of familial relationships. For example, the pietas that causes Titus to refurbish his elaborate family tomb also leads him to murder one of his sons. It is because Piero, the villainous father in Marston's Antonio's Revenge, imagines his daughter as a physical part of him "as near my heart …

The authors provide recommendations for increasing the number of proportions of American Indian students who enter, and graduate from, college.

Remaking A World Beyond State Demarcation: Emotion, Violence And Memory In Post-Conflict Oecussi, East Timor, Victoria Kumala Sakti Jan 2012

Remaking A World Beyond State Demarcation: Emotion, Violence And Memory In Post-Conflict Oecussi, East Timor, Victoria Kumala Sakti

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

How do people in conflict-torn societies process, communicate, and remember past experiences of violence and how are emotions articulated and experienced in these processes? The traumatic effects of war and political violence have been widely documented and continue to be researched to deepen our understanding on how people deal with aftermath of violence. It is assumed that the experience and memory of conflict/war-related violence – independent from its specific socio-political causes – evokes emotions such as grief, anger, pain, fear, shame and guilt within the actors involved. This research is interested in the various cultural codifications of these emotional dimensions …

Provocative Memory: The Fine Line Between Healing And Humiliation, Justice And Anger, Gearoid Millar Jan 2012

Provocative Memory: The Fine Line Between Healing And Humiliation, Justice And Anger, Gearoid Millar

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

This paper explores the public performance of memory for the purposes of healing and justice in post-war Sierra Leone. Following South Africa, truth commissions have commonly incorporated the public performances of truth-telling theorized within peacebuilding and transitional justice literature to provide psychological healing and postwar justice. Significant recent scholarship has, however, questioned the practical efficacy and cultural relevance of such processes in culturally diverse settings. Scholars such as Brandon Hamber, David Mendeloff, Tim Kelsall, and Rosalind Shaw have argued that there is no proof that such presentations heal individuals, nor provide a sense of justice. This paper investigates why this …

Re-Curating Testimony: Pedagogy For “Self-Aware” Witnessing, Erica Lehrer, Monica Eileen Patterson

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

This paper will present the pedagogical approaches and initial outcomes from our experimental seminar at Concordia University titled “Curating Difficult Knowledge: Engaging with the aftermath of violence through public displays, memorials, and sites of conscience.” In this seminar, we sought to engage students in both critical examination and creative production around the question of what it means to “learn from the past” as global violence continues, based on a series of assignments designed to (1) bring them into deep engagement with survivor testimony while highlighting the numerous factors mediating this encounter; and (2) produce public displays based on this testimony …

Returning To Santiago: City, Imagination & Memory, Sergio Fiedler Jan 2012

Returning To Santiago: City, Imagination & Memory, Sergio Fiedler

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

As a result of war and state repression, exile has become one of the most significant and massive process of social and cultural dislocation of the Twentieth Century , producing diasporas of truly nomadic subject with very singular experiences of social space and time, of memory and imagination. This problematic has been recently addressed by social theorists and academic researchers within both Anthropology and Cultural Studies. Through the use of semiotic phenomenology as a method and the construction of an auto-ethnographic narrative, this paper attempts to give a situated account of the reconstruction of memory and imagination drawing my own …

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence Jan 2012

Studying Socioeconomic Trends Through Cemetery Sales Records: A Case Study Of Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida, Victoria Abigail Kennedy Lawrence

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cemeteries are microcosms of society bound together in sacred spaces. As manifestations of social mores, cemeteries allow anthropologists to obtain information on social development and structure. Where noninvasive study is mandated, crucial methods of interpretation include studies of landscape design, floral incorporation, grave marker design and development, and grave mementos. This thesis discusses these and other methods as they are used to infer group mores. It also indicates how information acquired from methods can be adversely affected by outside influences, such as vandalism, weathering, and replotting. This thesis adds to known methods of cemetery research another unbiased, noninvasive tool that …

Intercultural Communication Competence Among Long-Duration Spaceflight Crew: Implications For Moon, Mars And Beyond, Pratibha Kumar Jan 2012

Intercultural Communication Competence Among Long-Duration Spaceflight Crew: Implications For Moon, Mars And Beyond, Pratibha Kumar

Theses and Dissertations

Intercultural studies have established that communication misunderstandings and breakdowns are inevitable when people from different cultures interact in a multicultural environment. This dissertation study examined intercultural issues among long-duration spaceflight (LDSF) crew interactions, by using the theoretical framework of intercultural communication competence (ICC) theory. Specifically, it analyzed 71 oral histories from the Shuttle-Mir project, live interviews of American astronauts, and 71 journals written by astronauts on the International Space Station. The study employed a deductive qualitative content analysis method, supported by descriptive statistics. It posed three research questions: RQ 1: What are the documented instances of intercultural communication competence in …

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson Jan 2012

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson

Theses and Dissertations

“Spiritual Economies” asserts that the emancipatory drive in international social care to integrate spirituality and religion in culturally sensitive practice, is much needed given the demographic and social changes engendered by globalization. Ethical codes guiding the practice of international social care, furthermore, have mandated that spiritual and religious beliefs are an important part of cultural diversity. An extensive examination and analysis of the discourse on the integration of religion and spirituality in the predominantly secular social services, however, yielded a number of concerns among international social care scholars and practitioners regarding the inclusion of religion due to the potential for …

Politeia As Citizenship In Aristotle, John J. Mulhern Jan 2012

Politeia As Citizenship In Aristotle, John J. Mulhern

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Recent studies of the citizen and citizenship in Aristotle, such as those of Hansen, Morrison, and Collins, have focused attention on a somewhat neglected topic in Aristotle’s work. While a definitive treatment of this topic awaits a comprehensive catalogue of the uses of politeia in the Politica and the Ath. at least, with over 500 occurrences in the Politica alone, in this paper I contribute to the catalogue project by considering some examples of Aristotle’s use of politeia in idioms from earlier Greek literature which express participation in citizenship, giving a share in citizenship, and so on. I consider also …
