Intellectual Property And Asian Values, Peter K. Yu
Intellectual Property And Asian Values, Peter K. Yu
Faculty Scholarship
From Niall Ferguson to Fareed Zakaria, commentators have paid growing attention to the rise of Asia and its implications for the West. Recent years have also seen the emergence of a growing volume of literature on intellectual property developments in Asia, in particular China and India. Few commentators, however, have explored whether Asian countries will take unified positions on international intellectual property law and policy.
Commissioned for the Inaugural International Intellectual Property Scholars Series, this article fills the void by examining intellectual property developments in relation to the decades-old 'Asian values' debate. Drawing on the region's diversity in economic and …

To Find Places To Draw': Comics’ Resistance To Insecurity, Pedro Moura
To Find Places To Draw': Comics’ Resistance To Insecurity, Pedro Moura
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
To a certain extent, it is slightly easier today to navigate through the overwhelming and diverse production of comics if we choose a particular thematic principle. The label “9/11 comics”, for instance, is used for the collective creation of internet lists, Amazon wishlists and Wikipedia pages, which can be excellent points of departure for research. This paper wishes to argue that within this medium we can find creative gestures which are both “post-9/11 comics” and creations that argue against the insecurity discourses that have emerged under the shadow of that event. Positive and constructive contemporary works such as …

The Flexible Unity Of Economics, Michael John Reay
The Flexible Unity Of Economics, Michael John Reay
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Works
In an increasingly knowledge-based global environment, American-style economics may be an especially important form of expertise to understand. Existing studies of the discipline present something of a paradox, however, as some suggest that economic discourse is a logically unified and powerful promarket ideology, while others indicate that in practice it is quite fragmented and constrained. A series of 52 interviews with economists working in various jobs is used to reveal a possible way out of this paradox by highlighting three basic features of economic expertise: cognitive and practical framing via a “core” of relatively simple ideas and techniques, great flexibility …
Identifying And Reaching Ethnic Groups In The City, Anthony Casey
Identifying And Reaching Ethnic Groups In The City, Anthony Casey
Great Commission Research Journal
Immigrants are arriving in the United States in large numbers. We know the statistics, but what we do not know is who these people are, where they are living, and how we reach them with the Gospel. This article presents a strategy for identifying and reaching ethnic groups in the city. The first section provides information for locating internationals through research at the national, state, and local level. The second section examines issues related to urban ethnic church planting such as meeting felt needs, understanding worldview issues, dealing with preliterates, and training and partnering with other churches.
Vertical And Horizontal Perspectives On Rights Consciousness, David M. Engel
Vertical And Horizontal Perspectives On Rights Consciousness, David M. Engel
Journal Articles
It has become commonplace to assert that rights consciousness is expanding globally and that individuals worldwide demonstrate an increasing awareness of and insistence upon their legal entitlements. To marshal empirical support for such claims is, however, exceedingly complex. One important line of socio-legal research on rights consciousness adopts what might be called a “vertical” perspective, tracing the flow of legal norms and practices from prestigious international organizations and world centers of cultural production to local settings, where they may be adopted, resisted, or transformed. Vertical perspectives on rights consciousness have contributed new understandings of law in contemporary societies around the …
Health Parameters Across The Lifespan Among The Ache Of Paraguay, John D. Wagner
Health Parameters Across The Lifespan Among The Ache Of Paraguay, John D. Wagner
Anthropology ETDs
This work provides an integrative approach for assessing population health among a group of indigenous South American forager-farmers, the northern Aché of eastern Paraguay. The Aché were full-time hunting and gathering nomads up until the time of first peaceful contact in the early 1970s when they experienced a devastating virgin-soil population epidemic that killed approximately 40% of the population, where all age and sex groups were affected more or less equally with the exception of a higher survival rate among reproductive-aged women. The Aché are now settled on several reservations and have fully recovered their population numbers. The Aché have …
New Paleoclimate Reconstruction Techniques In Archaeology: Applications In Greece, New Mexico, And Portugal, Brandon Lee Drake
New Paleoclimate Reconstruction Techniques In Archaeology: Applications In Greece, New Mexico, And Portugal, Brandon Lee Drake
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation develops new techniques of analysis that make existing archaeological data more useful for understanding past climate change. These techniques are introduced through three key case studies in the San Juan Basin of New Mexico, the Lower Alentejo of Portugal, and the Eastern Mediterranean. A 12,000 year record of pollen collected from packrat middens across Chaco Canyon were analyzed using a new normalization procedure to produce a Holocene record of piñon and ponderosa pine abundance. The normalization procedure, species occurrence, enabled statistical analysis of the data. Simple linear models indicated that piñon and ponderosa pollen were strongly correlated with …
Shoe Design Requirements For The Physically Disabled Women, Mariana Rachel Roncoletta, Maria Cecilia Loschiavo Dos Santos
Shoe Design Requirements For The Physically Disabled Women, Mariana Rachel Roncoletta, Maria Cecilia Loschiavo Dos Santos
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The physically disabled women have difficulties in entirely incorporating the social and cultural dimensions of shoes into their everyday life due to the lack of products and the bad quality of the existing ones. The few products available in the Brazilian mass market cause embarrassment to their wearers as they result from designs which give priority to the functional aspects without taking the social and cultural dimensions into account. In order to incorporate such dimensions, this present paper describes part of a study consisting of the development of the shoe design methodology, which would be able to allow both effective …

A Comparison Of The Kenotic Trinitarian Theology Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Sergei Bulgakov, Katy Leamy
A Comparison Of The Kenotic Trinitarian Theology Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Sergei Bulgakov, Katy Leamy
Dissertations (1934 -)
Vital to Balthasar’s own articulation of the dogmas of the Incarnation and the Trinity is the kenotic Trinitarian theology of Sergei Bulgakov. The ways in which Balthasar both incorporates and modifies Bulgakov's Trinitarian theology provide an insight into his overarching theological agenda. My dissertation argues that Sergei Bulgakov, a 20th century Russian Orthodox theologian, is an important resource for Balthasar, directly and indirectly influencing key doctrinal points as well as the overall shape and direction of his theological project. This dissertation explores how Balthasar employs and adapts the thought of Sergei Bulgakov, with the Trinitarian theology of Thomas Aquinas to …

As this symposium commences, originalism is a hot topic to discuss and a cool position to advocate. Either portion of that statement would have been nearly inconceivable two decades ago when I started in academia. Originalism at that time was something of an intellectual backwater, with a very limited set of adherents and an even more limited set of critics who were willing to take originalist ideas seriously.1
Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel
Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel
Anthós
As a continent, Africa has been explored, exploited, and largely abandoned by the West. During the colonial era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, foreign powers encountered diverse cultures, superstitions and disease before promptly labeling the entire continent a dangerous and primitive place. For early explorers and colonialists, disease and the threat of ill health is what defined Africa. They overlooked the pre-existing strategies and practices that Africans had adapted to guard against certain diseases, either ignoring them or labeling the misunderstood safety nets as primitive. Also overlooked was the importance of societal organization and communal cooperation among …

Case Study: The Optimization Of Information Flow & Organization In Software Development, Farshad Madani, Bing Wang, Xiaowen Wang, Corey White, Liying Wang
Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects
Trial and error are inevitable in the process of software development; the redesign is wasteful when unfocused communication occurs within the development process. To speed up this development process, we optimized the information flow and redesigned the development organization into chunks. First, we investigated the information flow between tasks and coupled tasks into phases utilizing the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) so that the information exchange among chunks of tasks is as few as possible. In this way, the redundant iterations of tasks are eliminated. Meanwhile, we also grouped the engineers into groups according to the tasks, in this; we eliminated …

Personal Reflection: An Early Introduction To Sotl And The Shaping Of An Academic Career, April L. Mcgrath
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This personal reflection describes my development as a professor engaged in SoTL, describing the path from an unsure graduate student to an early career faculty member working at an undergraduate university dedicated to excellence in teaching. I was introduced to SoTL at the beginning of my doctoral program and received the necessary support to pursue my research interests in the area of writing and feedback. The mentoring provided by a faculty member during that time ensured that I followed through on my first SoTL research project. Since then, support from a SoTL program at my current institute has allowed me …

Caregivers' Social Capital And Satisfaction With Their Children's Service Providers, Joseph Galaskiewicz, George Hobor, Beth Duckles, Olga V. Mayorova
Faculty Journal Articles
The authors examine children's access to and caregiver's satisfaction with organizations that provide leisure time activities for children on Saturdays. The authors argue that access and satisfaction are a function of familie's financial, cultural and social capital. Using data on 1,036 households in the Phoenix metropolitan area in 2003-04, the authors found that families' financial and cultural capital affected whether or not children participate din activities organized by organizations, but family ties to the organization directly (e.g., either worked there, volunteered, donated) resulted in caregivers being more satisfied with the services. The authors also found that the benefits of network …

Feeding Ecology And Life History Strategies Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys, Elizabeth C. Eadie
Feeding Ecology And Life History Strategies Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys, Elizabeth C. Eadie
Anthropology ETDs
Dietary niches have widespread effects on individuals life histories, behaviors, and morphologies. Capuchin monkeys inhabit a complex dietary niche that often entails hunting of relatively large vertebrate prey, tool-use, and extraction of embedded resources that other closely related and sympatric species do not exploit. In this dissertation I examine, a) how juvenile capuchins overcome the challenges of reliance on a difficult-to-acquire diet, b) at what age juveniles achieve maximum foraging return rates for difficult-to-acquire foods, and c) what nutritional benefits capuchins obtain from exploitation of these foods. In the process of addressing these questions I test two prominent hypotheses regarding …

Researching The One-On-One From A Learning And Teaching Perspective, Louise Wallis, Anthony Williams
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper explores whether or not, current thinking in learning and teaching concepts reflects the state of the ‘studio’ in architectural education. Schön highlighted the deviant value of the architectural studio method in the 1980s for professional education. The central vehicle used in many of his works to argue the value of the reflective practicum was the one-on-one exchanges between an expert coach and a student. Opinions are divided whether or not these practices purport to fulfill concepts of learner-centred teaching and constructivism. This paper reviews and discusses the ‘studio’ literature in architectural education in terms of its links to …
Making Sense Of Interventions In Public Places As Drivers Of Urban Renewal, Sandra Viña
Making Sense Of Interventions In Public Places As Drivers Of Urban Renewal, Sandra Viña
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The aim of this paper is above all to discuss urban renewal through interventions and experiments in public city places. The conceptual framework builds on how and why people appropriate urban places, and illustrates the impact of consensual and dissensual interventions in everyday city life. The paper starts by providing a brief literature review of the standpoints of urban renewal, and states some current problems about the utilization of the city. I will present a typology of interventions in urban public places, which illustrates different interventions in a table. The vertical axis of the table illustrates on one side consensual …

Design Process In Retrieving The Local Wisdom And Communal Identity: A Case Study Of Bangchaocha’S Bamboo Basketry Crafts, Woranooch Chuenrudeemol, Nanthana Boonlaor, Apirom Kongkanan
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This study aims to develop a method of retrieving indigenous knowledge, cultural identity, and artistic quality in local craft through design activities. Taking bamboo basketry product as the case study, this research selected Bangchaocha, a sub-district in Ang Thong province, as a representative of Thailand’s rich culture and established crafts village. The community has recently encountered a problem seen in many craft communities throughout Asia – one that sees the loss of their traditional craft identity due to foreign traders placing large orders for generic products that showcase neither indigenous craft knowledge nor traditional craftsmanship. This study aims to show …
