Ap Literature Summer Reading Unit For My Antonia And Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn [12th Grade], Amy R. Thomson Jul 2012

Ap Literature Summer Reading Unit For My Antonia And Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn [12th Grade], Amy R. Thomson

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This is an approximately four week unit intended for senior AP Literature students with daily forty five minute class periods. It is based on the novels My Antonia by Willa Cather, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.

These novels were both summer reading assignments, so the students should have read them previously during the summer and completed assignments based on them before the unit begins. This unit will be the first one of the year, after about a week of assignments focused on getting to know the students and teambuilding.

Due to the fact that the novels have …

Review Of Imprisoned Art, Complex Patronage: Plains Drawings By Howling Wolf And Zotom At The Autry National Center By Joyce M. Szabo, Phillip Earenfight Jul 2012

Review Of Imprisoned Art, Complex Patronage: Plains Drawings By Howling Wolf And Zotom At The Autry National Center By Joyce M. Szabo, Phillip Earenfight

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Imprisoned Art adds to its author's growing list of impressive publications that consider the so-called ledger drawings created by Plains Indian warriors incarcerated, as prisoners of the Southern Plains wars, at Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Florida, between 1875 and 1879. It focuses on what were once two fully intact books of drawings, one by Zotom (Kiowa), the other by Howling Wolf (Cheyenne). Treated earlier in Dorothy Dunn's 1877: Plains Indian Sketch Books of Zo-Tom and Howling Wolf (1969), and, with respect to Howling Wolf, in Szabo's Howling Wolf and the History of Ledger Art (1994), the books receive here …

The Effects Of Genetic Ancestry And Sociocultural Factors On Pulmonary Tuberculosis Susceptibility In Northeastern Mexico, Bonnie Nadyne Young Jul 2012

The Effects Of Genetic Ancestry And Sociocultural Factors On Pulmonary Tuberculosis Susceptibility In Northeastern Mexico, Bonnie Nadyne Young

Anthropology ETDs

Genetic and environmental factors contribute to variation in tuberculosis (TB) disease risk among individuals in the Americas, although the relative contribution of each of these factors remains unclear. Genetic ancestry may serve as a proxy for underlying genetic differences in TB risk between the European, Native American, and African groups that formed many populations in the Americas, but this has never been tested. Such tests are complicated by the fact that genetic ancestry and important potential social predictors of TB are usually confounded. The urban center of Nuevo León, the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA), presents a unique setting to tease …

Women Living Islam In Post-War And Post-Socialist Bosnia And Herzegovina, Emira Ibrahimpašić Jul 2012

Women Living Islam In Post-War And Post-Socialist Bosnia And Herzegovina, Emira Ibrahimpašić

Anthropology ETDs

This is an ethnographic study of what it means to be a Muslim woman in post-war and post-socialist Bosnia and Herzegovina. Almost two decades after the end of inter-ethnic wars that led to the dissolution of socialist Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Bosnias inhabitants are undergoing radical social, economic, political, and particularly religious transformations. This transformation, visible in both community and individual lives, can be discerned in all aspects of daily life. In this dissertation I examine the underlying reasons and motivations concerning the different ways in which one can practice and live Islam in Sarajevo and Zenica, two of the …

Shamanism In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Michael Winkelman Jul 2012

Shamanism In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Michael Winkelman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article reviews the origins of the concept of the shaman and the principal sources of

controversy regarding the existence and nature of shamanism. Confusion regarding the

nature of shamanism is clarified with a review of research providing empirical support for a

cross-cultural concept of shamans that distinguishes them from related shamanistic healers.

The common shamanistic universals involving altered states of consciousness are examined

from psychobiological perspectives to illustrate shamanism’s relationships to human nature.

Common biological aspects of altered states of consciousness help explain the origins of

shamanism while social influences on this aspect of human nature help to explain …

Negotiating Relationships And Intimacy: Bangladeshi Female Migrant Workers In Malaysia, K. Chakraborty Jul 2012

Negotiating Relationships And Intimacy: Bangladeshi Female Migrant Workers In Malaysia, K. Chakraborty

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This paper will review the context of female Bangladeshi migrant workers in Malaysia. The paper begins by reviewing position of women in Bangladeshi society. This exploration points to the possibilities of a negative reputation when women do venture overseas to work. Then the paper investigates the historical background of Bangladeshi migration to Malaysia. This investigation shows that migration is a highly gendered discourse in both countries. Moreover post-modern policies in Bangladesh and Malaysia have problematized ‘women workers’ in many ways. The paper will then detail the methods used in this research and how they are culturally and gender sensitive to …

Subversion Through Inversion: Kent Monkman's "The Triumph Of Mischief", Monique Thérèse Belitz Jul 2012

Subversion Through Inversion: Kent Monkman's "The Triumph Of Mischief", Monique Thérèse Belitz

Art & Art History ETDs

Monkmans acrylic painting The Triumph of Mischief is the central subject of this investigation which includes its relationship to other paintings and objects in the installation The Triumph of Mischief. By applying Mieke Bal's narratology theory, the principles of carnivals as proposed by Mikhail Bahktin, the four dichotomies underlying Western movies, Monkman's appropriation of older art work, his use of various binary opposites and his inclusion of iconographic details from various art history epochs are explained. Investigating the painting from a postcolonial and postmodern theoretical angle demonstrates that several iconic images from Western art history are decolonized by mocking and …

Legal Models For The Recognition Of Cultural Arguments In Criminal Law: A Normative Viewpoint, Guy Ben-David Jul 2012

Legal Models For The Recognition Of Cultural Arguments In Criminal Law: A Normative Viewpoint, Guy Ben-David

University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review

Recognizing the cultural background of a defendant who belongs to a minority culture is known as “cultural defense,” meaning that the minority member’s cultural background is accepted as a form of “defense” in a criminal trial. In general, the term “defense” is not only applicable in the functional sense as a formal defense against criminal liability, but rather can be applied in its literal linguistic sense, meaning that the defendant’s cultural background may grant them different types of special considerations during the criminal procedure.

This article aims to examine several legal models for the recognition of the cultural background of …

Stratigraphy Of Quaternary Dunes By Sand Mineralogy And Pedogenic Features, Los Osos, California, Lyssa A. Cousineau

Master's Theses

The goal of this study was to assess mineralogy and pedogenic features of sand dunes in a stratigraphic sequence. The purpose was to determine whether these features significantly differ to reflect age differences with depth within the sequence. This study was conducted in Montaña de Oro State Park, located on the central Californian coast eighteen kilometers northwest of San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo County.

Samples were collected from the vertical exposure of one dune face by stratified random sampling at 1.0-m vertical intervals. Particle size distribution was determined through particle-size analysis by hydrometer and sieve. Electrical conductivity and …

Dealing With Insufficient Data: Metadata Modelling And Stochastic Exploration Of The Decision Space, David Nijssen, Andreas H. Schumann Jul 2012

Dealing With Insufficient Data: Metadata Modelling And Stochastic Exploration Of The Decision Space, David Nijssen, Andreas H. Schumann

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In Integrated Water Resources Management, a conjunctive consideration of hydrological processes and human influences is essential. Even though a large variety of hydrological models is available for this purpose; the application of these models is often hampered by insufficient data and information. In particular human impacts can not be described in detail. To cope with these problems a metadata modelling approach in form of a dynamic water balance was used, incorporating model-based analyses of the hydrological conditions and human impacts based on socio-economic statistics as well as on detailed studies of water utilisation in agriculture, industries and settlements. Interlinks of …

Meaningless Comparisons: Corporate Tax Reform Discourse In The United States, Omri Y. Marian Jul 2012

Meaningless Comparisons: Corporate Tax Reform Discourse In The United States, Omri Y. Marian

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article examines the role that international comparisons play in current corporate tax reform discourse in the United States. Citing the need to make the U.S. corporate tax system more competitive, comparisons are frequently used to assess other jurisdictions' tax-competitiveness, and many legislative proposals are supported by such comparative arguments. Examining such discourse against the background of several theoretical approaches to comparative law, this article argues that, to the extent that comparisons are aimed at providing guidance for prospective reform, this purpose is not well served. Participants in the corporate tax reform discourse, from both sides of the aisle, lack …

Vertical And Horizontal Perspectives On Rights Consciousness, David M. Engel Jul 2012

Vertical And Horizontal Perspectives On Rights Consciousness, David M. Engel

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

It has become commonplace to assert that rights consciousness is expanding globally and that individuals worldwide are demonstrating an increasing awareness of and insistence upon their legal entitlements. To marshal empirical support for such claims is, however, exceedingly complex. One important line of socio-legal research on rights consciousness adopts what might be called a "vertical" perspective, tracing the flow of legal forms and practices from prestigious and authoritative centers of cultural production to local settings, where they may be adopted, resisted, or transformed. Vertical perspectives on global rights consciousness have broadened and enriched the field of law and society by …

Dimensions Of Rights Consciousness, Carol J. Greenhouse Jul 2012

Dimensions Of Rights Consciousness, Carol J. Greenhouse

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Commenting on David Engel's Article, this Comment responds particularly to Engel's formulation of horizontal and vertical axes as a metaphor for the ways different analytical approaches to law and legal consciousness potentially yield *recombinant interpretive questions. Pursuing Engel's concerns with the embeddedness of local norms and social relations in state-based and global legal processes, this Comment suggests expanding the two dimensions of Engel's matrix to four, so as to highlight the relevance of social distance and temporality in the differing accounts of law he assays, and in appreciating their stakes. In so doing, this Comment situates Engel's essay as a …

Coffee And The Countryside: Small Farmers And Sustainable Development In Las Segovias De Nicaragua, Patrick W. Staib Jul 2012

Coffee And The Countryside: Small Farmers And Sustainable Development In Las Segovias De Nicaragua, Patrick W. Staib

Anthropology ETDs

Las Segovias de Nicaragua is a highland tropical region along the Río Coco and the Honduran border in the northern part of the country. Over the past decade and a half, efforts to introduce and establish organic coffee production methods and cooperative organization models have focused on the impoverished rural inhabitants of this region. This approach represents a significant shift in international development policies toward Third World producer nations. I engaged in this context to question the viability of organic coffee farming given the legacy of deceit, violence, and natural disasters that have plagued this region since the Spanish Conquest. …

Investigating Epistemological Implications Of Geospatial Representation In The Making Of Histories Of The Pueblos, Using An Exploratory Mixed Methods Approach, Judith Van Der Elst Jul 2012

Investigating Epistemological Implications Of Geospatial Representation In The Making Of Histories Of The Pueblos, Using An Exploratory Mixed Methods Approach, Judith Van Der Elst

Anthropology ETDs

The claim that epistemological differences between western science and indigenous research methodologies are the roots of contention of the interpretation and construction of histories is investigated. An exploratory mixed methods approach is employed to test whether current systems of geospatial analysis and representation are suitable for understanding different ways of knowing, focused on the spatial domain as a fundamental cognitive domain. Recent studies indicate that spatial cognition is significantly different among speakers of different language groups and that spatial ontology is not universal across the human population, providing the theoretical underpinning for questioning the organizational principles of currently used systems …
