Reflecting On The Future Of Design Education In 21st Century India: Towards A Paradigm Shift In Design Foundation, Indrani De Parker

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design Fundamentals or Basic Design, as it was referred to in early design education has come a long way since its origins at Bauhaus and its further evolution at Ulm. In the nascent period of industrial design, the work primarily focused on physical products. Today, however, designers need to deal with complex issues. 21st century design education needs to be able to design and develop strategies for all and not just look at ‘Good Form’. There is a visible shift from client-driven projects towards a more reflective ‘Issue Based’ design education that strives for more socially inclusive, locally/glocally/globally relevant solutions …

Design As Trickster, Tom Fisher Jul 2012

Design As Trickster, Tom Fisher

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper discusses the relationship between abstract conceptualizations of design and the uncertainty and contradiction that result from the need to re-configure our relationship to the material world that is presented by issues of sustainability. In ‘About the Word Design’ (2005) the philosopher Vilém Flusser provides an etymological analysis that goes beyond the word’s conventional connection to representation and form giving, pointing out a relationship between the ‘Design’ and the sense of human intentions, ‘to have designs on something’, connecting this with a sense of ‘cunning and deception’ - the designer is ‘a cunning plotter laying his traps’ (1999: 17). …

From Crime Scripts To Empathy Suits - Why Role-Playing And Visualisation Of User And Abuser “Scripts” Regarding Atm Crime Can Offer Useful Design Tools To Build Empathy And Catalyse Design Innovation, Lorraine Gamman, Adam Thorpe

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper describes how immersive and empathic methods employed in design and theatre, supported by ‘scripting’ exercises detailing the human and non-human actors and competencies in given crime scenarios, can provide tools for designers to better understand the problem context. We argue, that such methods help generate insight into the opportunistic mindset of the casual thief, or even the professional career criminal, without losing sight of the need to design for users. For design to resist or deter crime, it is necessary to understand the full context of criminal and user behavior before engaging or trying to build- in resistant …

Design & Determined Indeterminism, Vasilije Kokotovich Jul 2012

Design & Determined Indeterminism, Vasilije Kokotovich

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The world is filled with artefacts/products, systems, and environments. We consider these to be made by humans who determine their subsequent use as suggested by their embedded characteristics. Often these artefacts are the result of a design process. That is to say, they are developed by designers through some considered design process. This holds true for Product designers, Architects or Engineers. When developing their artefacts, these designers make many varied design decisions. In essence these designers determine the nature and characteristics of the artefact. These may include both functional and nonfunctional issues. These design decisions are sometimes related to each …

At the time of survey, students of ID and CD had completed the compulsory “Design Ethics” course, while students of VCD, AID …

The Aesthetics In Design And Cultural Studies, Theresa Lobo Jul 2012

The Aesthetics In Design And Cultural Studies, Theresa Lobo

DRS Biennial Conference Series

While industrial designers have traditionally advocated aesthetics in their work, with evocative forms and materials, recent advances in design philosophy about “user experience” suggest a deeper analysis. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to explore beauty as an experiential aesthetic value, dependent upon user-product interactions. The goal is to offer designers a valuable tool: a systematic, extensible model for describing beauty for design, with powerful insights drawn from other disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, computer science, and architecture. This paper strives to understand the concept of beauty as a value of human-product grounded in daily experience. Beauty is typically associated …

A Profession In Flux: An Era Of Leadership For Consultant Designers In Npd, Fiona Maciver Jul 2012

A Profession In Flux: An Era Of Leadership For Consultant Designers In Npd, Fiona Maciver

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper seeks to discern and chart the recent flux in the territory of practice in the consultant industrial design profession. External market conditions, such as globalisation and the repercussions of immediate digital communications, are evolving to create new ways and approaches to business, manufacture and consumption. These changes are having great impact upon the design industry, and it is suggested that design is moving into a new era of ascendency. Using a qualitative case study methodology, the research uncovers a distinct shift towards ‘design leadership’ in the context of the new product development (NPD) process for mature product categories. …

Ethics And Social Responsibility: Integration Within Industrial Design Education In Oceania, Mariano Ramirez Jul 2012

Ethics And Social Responsibility: Integration Within Industrial Design Education In Oceania, Mariano Ramirez

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Industrial design schools have typically functioned as training grounds in which future designers are skilled into becoming proficient creators of more ‘stuff’, many of which prove to be unnecessary and unsustainable. Several research publications examine the integration of sustainability in industrial design education, but most of these focus on ecological aspects, especially because environmental improvement has been the focus of government policymaking and product innovation in the last two decades or so. The social pillar of sustainability has received less attention; in fact there is no accepted definition in the design industry about what constitutes this area. This research investigates …

Theoretical Validity And Empirical Utility Of A Constructionist Analytics, Jaber F. Gubrium, James A. Holstein Jul 2012

Theoretical Validity And Empirical Utility Of A Constructionist Analytics, Jaber F. Gubrium, James A. Holstein

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Wing-Chung Ho offers an extensive critique of what he calls our “radical constructionist approach to family experience,” questioning the theoretical validity and empirical utility of the research program. This article responds to the charges in the broader context of the program's constructionist analytics, discussing family's experiential location, organizational embeddedness, and the importance of ethnographic sensibility. A brief extract of situated talk and interaction is presented to illustrate the discursive complexity and institutional bearings of family as a category of experience. The conclusion takes up the issue of whether the program is radical in conceptualization and empirical realization.

‘You’D Stand In Line To Buy Potato Peelings’: German Women's Memories Of World War Ii, Gail Hickey Jul 2012

‘You’D Stand In Line To Buy Potato Peelings’: German Women's Memories Of World War Ii, Gail Hickey

Journal of International Women's Studies

How do U.S. women immigrants remember their experiences of World War II? In what ways do these women choose to transmit their memories to the next generation? These are the questions explored in this study.

Women immigrants have been treated as if they were insignificant actors in history and socialization (Kelson & DeLaet, 1999). Feminist scholarship challenges this portrait of women as insignificant actors, arguing against gender-biased perspectives on the immigration experience. Yet scholarly sources provide little information about the “real life problems” of women immigrants (Barber, 2005).

Immigration research historically has tended toward historical and demographical data compilations, resulting …

Reintegrating Self: Theorizing Women’S Self-Transformations In Cross-Cultural Contexts, Dongxiao Qin Jul 2012

Reintegrating Self: Theorizing Women’S Self-Transformations In Cross-Cultural Contexts, Dongxiao Qin

Journal of International Women's Studies

A grounded theory is developed to explore the processes of Chinese immigrant women’s self-transformations in cross-cultural contexts. A series of psychological processes, “integrating self,” “fragmenting self,” and “reintegrating self” are identified from interviews with ten Chines women who immigrated to the United States in the last two decades of the twentieth century. Women’s senses of self-transformations are interpreted from phenomenological, cultural, anthropological, and critical feminist perspectives. The implications of this research are theoretical and practical. It contributes to critical feminist theories of women’s self-transformation within the context of cultural mobility from their culture of origin to the host culture. It …

Displays Of Personal Adornent And Body Decoration By Nineteenth Century Lakota (Sioux) Tribes: A Costly Signaling Model, Michelle L. Night Pipe Jul 2012

Displays Of Personal Adornent And Body Decoration By Nineteenth Century Lakota (Sioux) Tribes: A Costly Signaling Model, Michelle L. Night Pipe

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Throughout the nineteenth century, Lakota (Sioux) individuals devoted an enormous amount of time, energy, and resources to the production and purchase of lavish clothing, headdresses, and accessories. These items seemingly lack any practical value, making them difficult to account for in economic terms. Costly signaling theory, however, predicts that the costs of the production of personal adornment and body decoration may be offset by the accumulation of prestige. For Lakota men, prestige translated into higher status, membership in warrior and headmen's societies, leadership opportunities, marital opportunities, and ultimately, differential reproductive success. Lakota women also garnered prestige based on the quality …

Regional Differences In Preferences For Managerial Leader Behavior In China, Romie F. Littrell, Ilan Alon, Ka Wai Chan

Faculty Publications

This study demonstrates the complexities of analyzing determinants of cultural differences between and within national cultures. Ralston, Yu, Wang, Terpstra, and He (1996) investigated geographic regional differences in values in China, finding significant differences among the regions. This study investigates geographic regional differences in preferred managerial leader behavior in four provinces. In 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire XII (LBDQ XII) was administered to people working in business organization in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province; Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province; Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province; and in the Macau Special Administrative Region, in the Peoples’ Republic of China. Significant …

Flow In The Community College Classroom?: An Autoethnographic Exploration, Amanda Latz Jul 2012

Flow In The Community College Classroom?: An Autoethnographic Exploration, Amanda Latz

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Flow theory has not been previously applied to faculty experiences in higher education. Upon carrying out this autoethnographic self-study, I discovered that my experiences as a community college instructor were riddled with periods of being in flow. During the spring academic semester of 2010, I created weekly journals of my teaching life. Then, I coded and analyzed the journals and three themes were generated: preparation rituals, feedback, and solidarity. This self-study provided me with a wealth of knowledge about my own teaching and could assist others in understanding their own teaching experiences. It also highlighted the importance of affect in …

Investigating Predictors Of Preferences For Deliberative Qualities Of Political Conversations Using The Analytic Hierarchy Process, David L. Brinker Jul 2012

Investigating Predictors Of Preferences For Deliberative Qualities Of Political Conversations Using The Analytic Hierarchy Process, David L. Brinker

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis presents a conceptual and methodological approach to researching preferences for political conversation. The thesis contends that although real-world political discussion is not deliberative, insofar as it fails to satisfy the rigorous requirements deliberative theorists have laid out, the lack of empirical evidence is not cause to reject deliberation as a viable political theory. To connect the theoretical and empirical, this thesis presents a “quasi-deliberation” framework. Quasi-deliberation, for the purpose of this thesis, is the state of political discourse shaped by the choices made when ideal deliberative qualities conflict in the real world. Quasi-deliberation suggests that the differences between …

Refugee Resettlement In America: The Iraqi Refugee Experience In Upstate, New York, Christine M. Fandrich Jul 2012

Refugee Resettlement In America: The Iraqi Refugee Experience In Upstate, New York, Christine M. Fandrich

Faculty Journal Articles

This study will document the experiences of Iraqi refugees resettled in a small Upstate, N.Y. city in order to examine resettlement and integration outcomes regarding this population. Research regarding Iraqi refugees and their resettlement before and after the 2003 US-led invasion are few, and therefore this case study will contribute to the literature on Iraqi refugees after resettlement. This study will find that previous theories of integration are inadequate to fully explain the integration of Iraqi refugees as these theories do not take into account: 1) pre-arrival/home related factors; 2) post-arrival/ host related factors; and 3) individual motives and intentions …
