Reconceptualising Resources: A Critique Of Service-Dominant Logic, Norah Campbell, Aidan O'Driscoll, Michael Saren Jun 2012

Reconceptualising Resources: A Critique Of Service-Dominant Logic, Norah Campbell, Aidan O'Driscoll, Michael Saren

Conference papers

This paper examines the interactive relationship between intangible, human capabilities (operant resources) and tangible, physical assets (operand resources) in an era of global interconnectedness. It does so within the context of service-dominant logic and the challenge of sustainability in a world of resource scarcity. It challenges conventional ideas about the superiority of certain kinds of resources and it confronts a pervasive culture of demateriality both in marketing and contemporary post-industrial theory – the idea that ‘stuff’ does not count. Building on calls for a revised theory of economics and society, this paper offers a parsimonious model of a more holistic …

Henri Lopes : L’Écrivain Et Ses Doubles, Anthony Mangeon Jun 2012

Henri Lopes : L’Écrivain Et Ses Doubles, Anthony Mangeon

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Henri Lopes’ novels display both a staging and a deep reflection on the African writer’s figure. His metatextual and metafictional practices reveal tensions inherent to the literary field as well as some literary postures available to African novelists. Different intertextual games (with existing literary works, with fictitious pieces of writing, between the different narratives imagined by Lopes himself) underscore the mimical and antagonist relationships between writers, characters and the symbolical figures of the author and the father. This allows the novelist to present himself as both a politically committed and a culturally hybrid writer.

Motivated by the need to be heard and to express a Madagascan cry suffocated by colonial and postcolonial history, the work of writer J.-L. Raharimanana fi ts remarkably well in the francophone literary landscape. It is characterised by writing in constant oxymoronic tension between violence and poetry. Once associated with humour and poetry, violence, portrayed as a residual component of colonial times, becomes energy to be recycled. This innovative force is at the origin of the author’s verbal and generic creativity. The aesthetic of violence in Rharimanana’s texts upholds a profoundly singular poetic and leads to the conclusion that the …

Espaces, Savoirs Et Historicité Dans Le Feu Des Origines D’Emmanuel Dongala, Kasereka Kavwahirehi Jun 2012

Espaces, Savoirs Et Historicité Dans Le Feu Des Origines D’Emmanuel Dongala, Kasereka Kavwahirehi

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article demonstrates how, in Le feu des origines, the main character’s trajectory embodies the figuration of the history of African societies and the mutations of knowledge and belief systems that occurred during that very history. Thus, this text proposes a reflection on the manner in which a conflict plays out between old and new conceptions of the world, as well as the political and metaphysical implications of the replacement of old ways of thinking by new theories or scientific practices and techniques.

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The relationship between Haiti and the Domincan Republic is often analyzed through the prism of the century-old rivalry which opposed the two countries at specifi c times during the course of their history. Le peuple des terres mêlées is about one of the darkest chapter of this troubled and turbulent past; the 1937 genocide of thousands of Haitians by the Dominican authorities. In the border town of Elias Piña, a Haitian, Adèle Benjamin and her Dominican husband, Pedro Alvarez Brito are caught up in the genocidal violence ordered by the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo y Molina whose goal is to …

Habitat enhancement structures range widely in design. They generally aim to enhance fish habitat by providing a structure for fish and other aquatic life to colonise and potentially lead to an increase in their biological production.

The primary function of an artificial reef is to provide additional structure and habitat to support an increased production of fish ad other aquatic organisms.

Synthetic Biology: Does Re-Writing Nature Require Re-Writing Regulation?, Jordan Paradise, Ethan Fitzpatrick Jun 2012

Synthetic Biology: Does Re-Writing Nature Require Re-Writing Regulation?, Jordan Paradise, Ethan Fitzpatrick

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

Technological advancements in the life sciences are continually pressing forward despite frequent and vocal resistance. Examples of such advancements include reproductive technologies, genetics, stem cell research, nanotechnology, and now synthetic biology. In May 2010, the J. Craig Venter Institute, a multidisciplinary scientific organization led by one of the first scientists to sequence the human genome, announced in the journal Science the creation of the first synthetic cell-a manmade, single-celled organism with the ability to self-replicate. While hailed as a monumental step forward for science, the response from opponents was swift: stop the science from going forward, keep the products off …

Subregions of the cingulate cortex represent prominent intersections in the structural networks of the primate brain. The relevance of the cingulate to the structure and dynamics of large-scale networks ultimately requires a link to functional connectivity. Here, we map fine-grained functional connectivity across the complete extent of the macaque (Macaca fascicularis) cingulate cortex and delineate subdivisions pertaining to distinct identifiable networks. In particular, we identified 4 primary networks representing the functional spectrum of the cingulate: somatomotor, attention-orienting, executive, and limbic. The cingulate nodes of these networks originated from separable subfields along the rostral-to-caudal axis and were characterized by positive and …

Dissection Of The Role Of The Stable Signal Peptide Of The Arenavirus Envelope Glycoprotein In Membrane Fusion, Emily L. Messina, Joanne York, Jack H. Nunberg Jun 2012

Dissection Of The Role Of The Stable Signal Peptide Of The Arenavirus Envelope Glycoprotein In Membrane Fusion, Emily L. Messina, Joanne York, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The arenavirus envelope glycoprotein (GPC) retains a stable signal peptide (SSP) as an essential subunit in the mature complex. The 58-amino-acid residue SSP comprises two membrane-spanning hydrophobic regions separated by a short ectodomain loop that interacts with the G2 fusion subunit to promote pH-dependent membrane fusion. Small-molecule compounds that target this unique SSP-G2 interaction prevent arenavirus entry and infection. The interaction between SSP and G2 is sensitive to the phylogenetic distance between New World (Junin) and Old World (Lassa) arenaviruses. For example, heterotypic GPC complexes are unable to support virion entry. In this report, we demonstrate that the hybrid GPC …

Artificial Alveolar-Capillary Membrane On A Microchip, Keith Male Jun 2012

Artificial Alveolar-Capillary Membrane On A Microchip, Keith Male

Materials Engineering

A microfluidic device was synthesized out of polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) to simulate the structure of the alveolar-capillary interface of the human lung. Soft lithography techniques were used to build a mold structure out of SU-8 epoxy at heights ranging from 30µm to 110 µm on a silicon substrate, with the 70 µm structure working the best. A mixture of 10:1 Sylgard 184 elastomer was then cast using the mold, and cured at a temperature of 80oC. For the porous membrane, the PDMS was spun on at 6000rpm for 30 seconds using a spin coater to produce a membrane …

The Mitigation Of Eutrophication Using Microporous Polymer Membranes To Control Algae Growth, Christopher R. Riley

Materials Engineering

A system was designed to mitigate the accelerated process of anthropogenic eutrophication. This system aimed to contain Chlorella Vulgaris microalgae cells within an enclosed polymer membrane pouch while allowing for water and nutrients to diffuse through the pouch. As a test model, a 10 gallon aquarium was partitioned into three sections using polycarbonate membranes with 1 micron pore diameters. Each section was then gradually filled with a deionized water and Bristol solution recommended for microalgae growth. Phosphate and nitrate were added to Section A of the aquarium and allowed to diffuse throughout the tank. A water pump was used to …

Virus Infections In Wild Plant Populations Are Both Frequent And Often Unapparent, Holly R. Prendeville, Xiaohong Ye, Thomas Jack Morris, Diana Pilson Jun 2012

Virus Infections In Wild Plant Populations Are Both Frequent And Often Unapparent, Holly R. Prendeville, Xiaohong Ye, Thomas Jack Morris, Diana Pilson

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

• Premise of the study: Pathogens are thought to regulate host populations. In agricultural crops, virus infection reduces yield. However, in wild plants little is known about the spatial and temporal patterns of virus prevalence. Thus, pathogen effects on plant population dynamics are unclear. Prevalence data provide necessary background for (1) evaluating the effects of virus infection on plant population size and dynamics and (2) improving risk assessment of virus-resistant transgenic crops.

• Methods: We used ELISA and RT-PCR to survey wild Cucurbita pepo populations over 4 years for five viruses, aphid-transmitted viruses of the genus Potyvirus as a …

Quantitative Acoustic Analysis Of The Vocal Repertoire Of The Golden Rocket Frog (Anomaloglossus Beebei), Beth A. Pettitt, Godfrey R. Bourne, Mark A. Bee

Biology Faculty Publications

This study describes the vocal repertoire of the Guyanan golden rocket frog, Anomaloglossus beebei, a bromeliad specialist with biparental care. Using multivariate analyses of nine call properties, as well as the occurrence of nonlinear phenomena, three signal types were distinguished—advertisement, courtship, and aggressive calls. Although all three call types were composed of a short series of rapidly repeated pulses, advertisement calls were produced at higher amplitudes and had longer pulse durations than both courtship calls and aggressive calls. Courtship calls exhibited lower dominant frequencies than both advertisement and aggressive calls, which had similar dominant frequencies. Aggressive calls had more …

Public Discourse, Expert Knowledge, And The Press, Joseph Blocher Jun 2012

Public Discourse, Expert Knowledge, And The Press, Joseph Blocher

Washington Law Review

This Essay identifies and elaborates two complications raised by Robert Post’s Democracy, Expertise, and Academic Freedom, and in doing so attempts to show how Post’s theory can account for constitutional protection of the press. The first complication is a potential circularity arising from the relationships between the concepts of democratic legitimation, public discourse, and protected social practices. Democratic legitimation predicates First Amendment coverage on participation in public discourse, whose boundaries are defined as those social practices necessary for the formation of public opinion. But close examination of the relationships between these three concepts raises the question of whether public …

The 2010 Economic Impact Of The Nebraska Agricultural Production Complex, Eric Thompson, Bruce Johnson, Anil Giri Jun 2012

The 2010 Economic Impact Of The Nebraska Agricultural Production Complex, Eric Thompson, Bruce Johnson, Anil Giri

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Nebraska’s agricultural production complex is remarkable in both its sheer volume of production and its diversity. The state is a national leader in the production of major crop and livestock commodities. It is also home to major input industries tied to agriculture as well as sectors processing agricultural production into value-added products, all of which contribute to its economic significance. Moreover, the growth of the state’s agriculture over the past decade has been phenomenal. In 2010, total farm cash receipts exceeded $20 billion for the first time, essentially double the 2000 level. And while the nation’s economy was hit by …

Chemistry-Dependent Adsorption Of Serum Proteins Onto Polyanhydride Microparticles Differentially Influences Dendritic Cell Uptake And Activation, Brenda R. Carrillo-Conde, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Michael J. Wannemeuhler, Balaji Narasimhan Jun 2012

Chemistry-Dependent Adsorption Of Serum Proteins Onto Polyanhydride Microparticles Differentially Influences Dendritic Cell Uptake And Activation, Brenda R. Carrillo-Conde, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Michael J. Wannemeuhler, Balaji Narasimhan

Amanda Ramer-Tait Publications

The delivery of antigen-loaded microparticles to dendritic cells (DCs) may benefit from surface optimization of the microparticles themselves, thereby exploiting the material properties and introducing signals that mimic pathogens. Following in vivo administration microparticle surface characteristics are likely to be significantly modified as proteins are quickly adsorbed onto their surface. In this work we describe the chemistry-dependent serum protein adsorption patterns on polyanhydride particles and the implications for their molecular interactions with DCs. The enhanced expression of MHC II and CD40 on DCs after incubation with amphiphilic polyanhydride particles, and the increased secretion of IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-12p40 by hydrophobic …
