Role Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Experimental Colitis, Shakir Alsharari Aug 2012

Role Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Experimental Colitis, Shakir Alsharari

Theses and Dissertations

Substantial evidence in the literature shows that tobacco smoking has complex and divergent effects on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). It ameliorates ulcerative colitis (UC); whereas it aggravates the risk of Crohn’s disease (CD) and affects the disease course and severity. Studies have shown that nicotine has a positive influence on symptoms of UC. Also, it is demonstrated that nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, especially α7 subunit plays an essential component in the vagus nerve-based cholinergic anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, we explored the effect of nicotine and α7 nicotinic agonists treatment in the DSS colitis mouse model. We also investigated the …

Modeling Surfaces From Volume Data Using Nonparallel Contours, Ross Taylor Sowell Aug 2012

Modeling Surfaces From Volume Data Using Nonparallel Contours, Ross Taylor Sowell

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Magnetic resonance imaging: MRI) and computed tomography: CT) scanners have long been used to produce three-dimensional samplings of anatomy elements for use in medical visualization and analysis. From such datasets, physicians often need to construct surfaces representing anatomical shapes in order to conduct treatment, such as irradiating a tumor. Traditionally, this is done through a time-consuming and error-prone process in which an experienced scientist or physician marks a series of parallel contours that outline the structures of interest. Recent advances in surface reconstruction algorithms have led to methods for reconstructing surfaces from nonparallel contours that could greatly reduce the manual …

Plant Calcium Content: Ready To Remodel, Jian Yang, Tracy Punshon, Mary Lou Guerinot, Kendal D. Hirschi Aug 2012

Plant Calcium Content: Ready To Remodel, Jian Yang, Tracy Punshon, Mary Lou Guerinot, Kendal D. Hirschi

Dartmouth Scholarship

By identifying the relationship between calcium location in the plant cell and nutrient bioavailability, the plant characteristics leading to maximal calcium absorption by humans can be identified. Knowledge of plant cellular and molecular targets controlling calcium location in plants is emerging. These insights should allow for better strategies for increasing the nutritional content of foods. In particular, the use of preparation-free elemental imaging technologies such as synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) microscopy in plant biology may allow researchers to understand the relationship between subcellular location and nutrient bioavailability. These approaches may lead to better strategies for altering the location of calcium …

Coronary Artery Remodeling In A Model Of Left Ventricular Pressure Overload Is Influenced By Platelets And Inflammatory Cells, Fanmuyi Yang, Anping Dong, Paul Mueller, Jessica Caicedo, Alyssa Moore Sutton, Juliana Odetunde, Cordelia J. Barrick, Yuri M. Klyachkin, Ahmed Abdel-Latif, Susan S. Smyth

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is usually accompanied by intensive interstitial and perivascular fibrosis, which may contribute to arrhythmogenic sudden cardiac death. The mechanisms underlying the development of cardiac fibrosis are incompletely understood. To investigate the role of perivascular inflammation in coronary artery remodeling and cardiac fibrosis during hypertrophic ventricular remodeling, we used a well-established mouse model of LVH (transverse aortic constriction [TAC]). Three days after pressure overload, macrophages and T lymphocytes accumulated around and along left coronary arteries in association with luminal platelet deposition. Consistent with these histological findings, cardiac expression of IL-10 was upregulated and in the systemic circulation, …

Tracking Of Various Targets In The Infrared And Issues Encountered, Kyle Ausfeld Aug 2012

Tracking Of Various Targets In The Infrared And Issues Encountered, Kyle Ausfeld

Theses

The use of a computer to track objects has been a subject of interest for a few decades. The applications these algorithms may be applied to span a large number of fields; anything from homeland security to the study of animal behavior. In particular, visible tracking has been around the longest and has the largest library of algorithms available. Algorithms such as Mean Shift have become a standard for testing algorithms against. However, algorithms such as Mean Shift may work well for visible video data, infrared video data presents some issues beyond many visible algorithms. Infrared video gives certain advantages …

Choreography And Performance With Deaf Adults Who Have Mental Illness: Culturally Affirmative Participatory Research, Sondra H. Malling

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) techniques—particularly choreography and performance techniques—have not been well-researched with Deaf adults who have mental illness. This study investigated the use of DMT, choreography, and performance techniques with Deaf adults with severe and chronic mental illness through participatory artistic inquiry. Primary research questions addressed pragmatic matters of participatory artistic inquiry: What aesthetic choices will the co-researchers make in the dance-making process? How does the researcher provide structure and incorporate her experience as a choreographer without overshadowing the contributions of the co-researchers? Broader philosophical research questions included: How do choreography and performance techniques impact this population’s well-being? How does …

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

A pharmacologic approach to male contraception remains a longstanding challenge in medicine. Toward this objective, we explored the spermatogenic effects of a selective small-molecule inhibitor (JQ1) of the bromodomain and extraterminal (BET) subfamily of epigenetic reader proteins. Here, we report potent inhibition of the testis-specific member BRDT, which is essential for chromatin remodeling during spermatogenesis. Biochemical and crystallographic studies confirm that occupancy of the BRDT acetyl-lysine binding pocket by JQ1 prevents recognition of acetylated histone H4. Treatment of mice with JQ1 reduced seminiferous tubule area, testis size, and spermatozoa number and motility without affecting hormone levels. Although JQ1-treated males mate …

Barriers To Graduation: An Examination Of First-Generation College Students, Sarah M. Smith Aug 2012

Barriers To Graduation: An Examination Of First-Generation College Students, Sarah M. Smith

The college experience of first- generation college students is unique in comparison to their peers. Many students do not have the support from their family and require help in the navigation of college life. Student Support Services, a federally funded TRIO program helps students successfully graduate with a bachelor's degree. Qualitative interviews were conducted on ten undergraduate students at UAF who were labeled as first-generation college students. All ten students were active participants in Student Support Services at the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the time of the interview. A thematic analysis produced six emergent themes. It was found that …

Music: A Portrait Of Woman, Amy R. Wellman Aug 2012

Music: A Portrait Of Woman, Amy R. Wellman

Communication

Music in today's society is ubiquitous. It is in the car, the cinema, on television, in the doctor's office, in the home, on the other end of the phone; it really is everywhere. Music arguably is a large part of culture and as such, has the ability to construct social realities. In hopes to understand how media constructs the image of the female, a contextual analysis was performed on the lyrics of the top twenty-five country and pop songs according to Billboard.com. This was done using Grounded Theory through the employment of coding. Results showed that although country and pop …

Investigation Of Thermal Regimes Of Lakes Used For Water Supply And Examination Of Drinking Water System In Kotzebue, Alaska, Tereza Bendlova Aug 2012

Investigation Of Thermal Regimes Of Lakes Used For Water Supply And Examination Of Drinking Water System In Kotzebue, Alaska, Tereza Bendlova

Engineering

Many villages in Arctic Alaska rely on lakes for water supply, such as the Alaskan City of Kotzebue, and these lakes may be sensitive to climate variability and change, particularly thermal regimes and corresponding effects on water quality. Thus, I initiated a study of water supply lakes in Kotzebue to collect data for developing a model to hindcast summer thermal regimes. Surface (Tws) and bed (Twb) temperature data collected from two water supply lakes and two control lakes from June 22nd-August 28th 2011 showed a similar pattern in relation to air temperature (Ta) and solar radiation with more frequent stratification …

Production Optimization And Forecasting Of Shale Gas Wells Using Simulation Models And Decline Curve Analysis, Peter O. Ikewun Aug 2012

Production Optimization And Forecasting Of Shale Gas Wells Using Simulation Models And Decline Curve Analysis, Peter O. Ikewun

Engineering

Production data from the Eagle Ford shale (an analogue to the Shublik shale of Alaska) was compiled from three neighboring counties and analyzed using decline curve analysis (DCA) to correlate production performance with completion method (horizontal leg/stages of fracture) and length of horizontal leg. Generic simulation models were built and run using a realistic range of properties. Simulation results provided a better understanding of interplay between static properties and dynamic behavior. Results from the DCA of 24 producing wells with production histories of 9-57 months showed, for most cases, an increase in reserves with more fracture stages. However, the DCA …
