Features Of Greek Satyr Play As A Guide To Interpretation For Plato's "Republic", Noel B. Reynolds Aug 2012

Features Of Greek Satyr Play As A Guide To Interpretation For Plato's "Republic", Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The paper borrows from recent work by classicists on satyr play and demonstrates significant parallels between Plato’s Republic and the structure, theme, and stereotypical contents that characterize this newly studied genre of ancient Greek drama. Like satyr play, the Republic includes repeated passages where metatheatricality can reverse the meaning. The frequent occurrence of all the stereotypical elements of satyr play in Plato’s Republic also suggests to readers that they should be responding to Socrates’s narration as they would to a satyr play, again reversing meaning by communicating a set of literary expectations to Plato’s readers over the heads of Socrates’s …

Oscillometric Measurement Of Systolic And Diastolic Blood Pressures Validated In A Physiologic Mathematical Model, Charles F. Babbs Aug 2012

Oscillometric Measurement Of Systolic And Diastolic Blood Pressures Validated In A Physiologic Mathematical Model, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

The oscillometric method of measuring blood pressure with an automated cuff yields valid estimates of mean pressure but questionable estimates of systolic and diastolic pressures. Existing algorithms are sensitive to differences in pulse pressure and artery stiffness. Some are closely guarded trade secrets. Accurate extraction of systolic and diastolic pressures from the envelope of cuff pressure oscillations remains an open problem in biomedical engineering.

Methods

A new analysis of relevant anatomy, physiology and physics reveals the mechanisms underlying the production of cuff pressure oscillations as well as a way to extract systolic and diastolic pressures from the envelope of …

Evaluating Community Gardens As Habitat For An Urban Butterfly, Kevin C. Matteson, Gail Langellotto Aug 2012

Evaluating Community Gardens As Habitat For An Urban Butterfly, Kevin C. Matteson, Gail Langellotto

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Although many butterfly species persist in heavily developed landscapes, it is unclear what factors influence movements of butterflies among urban habitat patches. We used mark-recapture and translocation experiments to assess residency and movement of the highly successful urban butterfly, Pieris rapae, within and among community gardens of New York City. Although the majority of marked butterflies used gardens transiently, a small number remained for several days. Recruitment (via pupation and/or immigration) and residence time of P. rapae adults was higher in larger gardens and gardens with more flowers. Residence time, but not recruitment, was influenced by the amount of surrounding …

The Role Of Il-2/Il-2r Signaling For Treg Cell Development, Homeostasis And Function, Guoyan Cheng Aug 2012

The Role Of Il-2/Il-2r Signaling For Treg Cell Development, Homeostasis And Function, Guoyan Cheng

Open Access Dissertations

CD4+ Foxp3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells belong to a distinct T cell lineage which develops in the thymus and is essential for the prevention of self-reactivity by suppressing peripheral auto-reactive T cells that escape thymic negative selection. IL-2/IL-2R signaling is crucial and non-redundant for the development of thymic Treg cells, as well as the homeostasis and competitive fitness of peripheral Treg cells. The central role of IL-2 in Treg biology is exemplified by the uncontrolled massive lymphoproliferation associated with IL-2-/-, IL-2Rα-/- and IL-2Rβ-/- mice which typically die by 4-12 week of age. It is noteworthy that a restored normal percentage …
