Regional Variation In Mandibular Morphology In The Prehistoric Japanese Populations Of The JōMon And Okhotsk, Rogelio A. Arenas
Regional Variation In Mandibular Morphology In The Prehistoric Japanese Populations Of The JōMon And Okhotsk, Rogelio A. Arenas
Anthropology
Examination of 11 metric mandibular traits was conducted on data collected from several Jōmon and Okhotsk sites for the purpose of analyzing potential impacts of dietary differences on mandibular morphology for these groups. Based on the dietary history of the populations and their respective regions, Middle Jōmon (5,000 - 3,000 BP) sites would share comparable robusticities across all regions based on social and economic continuity as a stable climate resulted in abundant dietary resources which fostered a growth in population in the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido. As the climate cooled in the Late/Final Jōmon (4,000 - 2,000 BP), …
Physical Environmental And Biological Correlates Of Otolith Chemistry Of Arctic Marine Fishes In The Chukchi Sea, Christine Marie Gleason
Physical Environmental And Biological Correlates Of Otolith Chemistry Of Arctic Marine Fishes In The Chukchi Sea, Christine Marie Gleason
Marine Biology
Life history movement patterns in marine fishes can be determined by otolith chemistry if environmental variables are reflected in the otoliths. Arctic cod (Boreogadus Saida), Arctic staghorn sculpin (Gymnocanthus tricuspis), and Bering flounder (Hippoglossoides robustus) are abundant Arctic fishes in the Chukchi Sea with overlapping distributions. Physical environmental data, demersal fishes, bottom seawater, and sediment interface seawater samples were collected from the Chukchi Sea Offshore Monitoring in Drilling Area (COMIDA) cruise on July 30, 2009 and the Russian American Long-term Census of the Arctic (RUSALCA) cruise from September 3 to 30, 2009 in the Chukchi Sea. Magnesium (Mg), strontium (Sr), …
Continuity Of Conduct And Substance Use Disorders Among Adolescents In The One Year And Two Years Following Exposure To Substance Abuse Treatment, Brian Mcmanus
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The current study utilized a sample of 138 adolescents from a short-term inpatient chemical dependency recovery hospital. Analyses utilized scales from the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs (GAIN), a semi-structured interview that was administered multiple times over the two years after treatment intake. Analyses examined the persistence of substance abuse, conduct disorder symptomatology, delinquent behavior, and mental distress following treatment. A primary goal of the study was to examine whether adolescents with severe conduct disorder (i.e., those engaging in behaviors causing considerable harm to others) followed different trajectories than their mild/moderate counterparts. This inquiry was predicated largely on research that …
Growth Of Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) As An Indicator Of Density-Dependence In The Chena River, Megan T. Perry
Growth Of Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) As An Indicator Of Density-Dependence In The Chena River, Megan T. Perry
Biological Sciences
In management of Pacific salmon, it is often assumed that density-dependent factors, mediated by the physical environment during freshwater residency, regulate population size prior to smolting and outmigration. However, in years following low escapement, temperature may be setting the upper limit on growth of juvenile chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha during the summer rearing period. Given the importance of juvenile salmon survival for the eventual adult population size, we require a greater understanding of how density-dependent and independent factors affect juvenile demography through time. In this study we tested the hypotheses that (1) juvenile chinook salmon in the Chena River are …
Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch
Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch
Biological Sciences
Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Alaska supports a large population of moose that lives in and around the urban and industrial development of Anchorage. This study evaluates the body condition of adult female moose on JBER and calculates the relative nutritional value of habitat for planning development and for mitigating the effects of development on this population. Body condition of moose on JBER was similar to that of other populations of moose in Alaska. Our nutritional model predicted that shrublands could support 11-81 times more moose than any other habitat on JBER. Activity patterns of JBER moose were similar to those …
Applicant Behavior On Internet Job Boards: The Effects Of Content And Style, Samuel Young
Applicant Behavior On Internet Job Boards: The Effects Of Content And Style, Samuel Young
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Although job boards are the largest single source of recruitment in the modern workplace, little research on what influences job seeker behavior has been conducted in this context. In order to address this gap in the literature, the present research draws on the theories of planned behavior and signaling theory to hypothesize a series of factors that may impact job seeker behavior. Despite theoretical support for many job posting characteristics, only formatting influenced job seeker behavior. Discussion of the implications and areas for future research are presented.
Assembly Of The Didymium Iridis Mitochondrial Genome By Genome Walking, Dale Kopp
Assembly Of The Didymium Iridis Mitochondrial Genome By Genome Walking, Dale Kopp
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Organelle inheritance and RNA editing has been studied in Didymium iridis even though the genome has not been completely sequenced. Four segments, comprising 66 kb, have been sequenced in the past. Several approaches have been taken to complete the sequence including restriction mapping and southern hybridization, as well as screening clone banks by PCR with the sequence of contig ends. In this study, genome walking was used to uncover sequences connecting the four segments. Using genome walking, approximately 4,113 bp of new sequence was identified. With the new sequence and the characterization of two previously sequenced D. iridis mt regions …
Reproductive Indices Of Male Snow Crab, Chionoecetes Opilio, From The Eastern Bering Sea, Marilyn Fox Zaleski
Reproductive Indices Of Male Snow Crab, Chionoecetes Opilio, From The Eastern Bering Sea, Marilyn Fox Zaleski
Fisheries
The reproductive success of male snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) is complicated by two different life history stages; male C. opilio undergo a terminal molt prior to adulthood which is marked by an allometric change in chela size. While adolescent males can produce spermatophores, terminally molted males are most successful in mating and reproduction. Molting and mating are hormonally linked, with molting regulated primarily by ecdysteroids and mating regulated by the putative reproductive hormone methyl farnesoate (MF). Methyl farnesoate is structurally related to the insect juvenile III hormone and, in addition to reproduction, may have a role as a juvenilizing hormone …

Influence Of Electrostatic Charge Upon The Deposition Behavior Of Pharmaceutical Aerosols Within Cascade Impactors, Megha Mohan
Influence Of Electrostatic Charge Upon The Deposition Behavior Of Pharmaceutical Aerosols Within Cascade Impactors, Megha Mohan
Theses and Dissertations
Cascade impactors, routinely used for in vitro particle size characterization of pharmaceutical aerosols, are calibrated using dilute, charge-neutralized, monodisperse aerosols. But pharmaceutical aerosols are known to generate concentrated, inherently charged, polydisperse aerosol clouds. A computational model of the Andersen Cascade Impactor (ACI) suggested that the presence of charge on aerosol particles may influence their deposition within the ACI, but experimental validation of the model is warranted. This dissertation investigates the influence of electrostatic charge upon the deposition behavior of aerosols within cascade impactors, to address the impact of charge on particle size characterization. The influence of applied charge upon the …
Movement, Habitat Use And Detection Probability Of Bridle Shiner Estimated By Patch Occupancy Modeling In A Connecticut Watershed, Timothy Jensen
Movement, Habitat Use And Detection Probability Of Bridle Shiner Estimated By Patch Occupancy Modeling In A Connecticut Watershed, Timothy Jensen
Master's Theses
The bridle shiner (Notropis bifrenatus) is believed to have once been an important prey item throughout its native range; however, recent reports suggest populations have declined significantly and the species is now widely considered as imperiled. Habitats that are associated with this species are typically difficult to sample using traditional methods, making it unclear how much of the observed range reduction could be actual or perceived. My objectives were to estimate detection probability of bridle shiner, evaluate the importance of habitat on their distribution, and determine patterns of movement among habitat patches. I employed a repeated surveys design …

Design And Simulation Of A Mechanical Hand, Yateen P. Shembade
Design And Simulation Of A Mechanical Hand, Yateen P. Shembade
Theses
A variety of mechanical hand designs have been developed in the past few decades. The majority of the designs were made with the sole purpose of imitating the human hand and its capabilities; however, none of these designs have been equipped with all the motions and sensory capabilities of the human hand. The primary goal of this thesis project was to design a robotic hand with the required amount of degrees-of-freedom and necessary constraints to achieve all the motions of the human hand. Demonstration of the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet, using a virtual design and controls platform, was used …

Configuration Of 3u Cubesat Structures For Gain Improvement Of S-Band Antennas, Vivek Shirvante, Shawn Johnson, Kathryn Cason, Kunal Patankar, Norman Fitz-Coy
Small Satellite Conference
Nano- and pico-satellites in low earth orbit (LEO), unlike their larger counterparts, have more stringent limitations on antenna design due to power constraints that govern the operational frequency and size that defines the mass and volume constraints. High bandwidth applications use higher frequencies and require higher transmission power. High gain antennas can reduce the transmission power requirements. CubeSat’s with body-mounted solar cells are limited in power generation due to limited surface area. Deployable solar panels offer a solution to the limited power by maximizing the surface area of solar cells exposed to solar radiation. The metallic deployable solar panel support …

Impulsive Choice In Adults: How Consistent Are Individual Differences?, Douglas J. Navarick
The Psychological Record
With animated cartoons as the reinforcer, college students repeatedly made choices between a schedule providing 15 s of viewing followed by 75 s of waiting and a schedule providing 55 s of waiting followed by 25 s of viewing and then 10 s of waiting. Individual differences in choice behavior were extreme: In the second half of the first session, on at least 70% of the trials, 40% of subjects chose the small (15-s) reinforcer (impulsivity) and 40% the large (25-s) reinforcer (self-control). Each of these subjects continued to choose the same schedule consistently throughout the second session 1 - …
Stimulus Movement And The Intensity Of Attention, David A. Washburn, R. Thompson Putney
Stimulus Movement And The Intensity Of Attention, David A. Washburn, R. Thompson Putney
The Psychological Record
A stimulus movement effect has been reported in which learning by nonhuman animals was significantly better with moving than with stationary stimuli. In the present investigation, this effect was extended to human participants (N = 56) and further explicated. In Experiment 1 the students responded significantly more accurately and rapidly on a battery of computerized tasks with moving versus stationary stimuli. In Experiment 2 performance on a concurrent task was systematically slowed even as performance was enhanced on two different primary tasks by stimulus movement, which supports the interpretation that these effects are mediated by attention. A distinction between procedural …
Fast Mapping And Exclusion (Emergent Matching) In Developmental Language, Behavior Analysis, And Animal Cognition Research, Krista M. Wilkinson, William V. Dube, William J. Mcilvane
Fast Mapping And Exclusion (Emergent Matching) In Developmental Language, Behavior Analysis, And Animal Cognition Research, Krista M. Wilkinson, William V. Dube, William J. Mcilvane
The Psychological Record
Researchers from behavior analytic, developmental, and comparative perspectives have all investigated the conditions under which new arbitrary (symbolic) stimulus-stimulus relations are acquired. For example, young children, people with severe mental retardation, and several species of nonhuman mammals all exhibit emergent matching (EM) in the context of a well-established matching-to-sample baseline: When presented with an undefined sample stimulus and a comparison array that includes one undefined comparison and one or more baseline comparisons, participants select the undefined comparison. Further, subsequent testing may show a learning outcome: Exposure to EM trials may result in a new defined relation involving the formerly undefined …
Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly
Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly
The Psychological Record
Neuroimmunological research has indicated that hypothalamic structures play an important role in the modulation of immunoresponsivity. We report that electrical stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus decreases the concentration of Immunoglobulin G (lgG) in rat serum. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to either an anterior or dummy electrode group. Following the determination of baseline IgG concentrations animals were placed in an operant chamber where electrical stimulation was delivered to animals in the anterior group. Animals in the dummy electrode group were placed in an operant chamber but received no brain stimulation through the attached cable. IgG concentrations were determined for …
Superstitious Behavior And Response Stereotypy Prevent The Emergence Of Efficient Rule-Governed Behavior In Humans, Richard Pisacreta
Superstitious Behavior And Response Stereotypy Prevent The Emergence Of Efficient Rule-Governed Behavior In Humans, Richard Pisacreta
The Psychological Record
This study examined whether humans would learn to solve simple problems by applying an efficient rule, that is, concept teaming. Twenty-four college students were shown a series of five letter combinations created from the first three letters of the alphabet (A, B, and C), presented on a computer terminal (e.g., ACAAA). Pressing computer keyboard keys changed the letters of the alphabet. When all five letters were identical (e.g., AAAAA), the computer informed the subject that they were correct. The most efficient solution to each problem (the rule) was to change only letters that did not match the majority of the …
