Effect Of Repeatedly Heated Palm Olein On Blood Pressure Regulating Enzymes Activity And Lipid Peroxidation In Rats, X.F. Leong, J. Salimon, Mohd Rais Mustafa, K. Jaarin
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Background: Oxidative stress is associated with the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Deep-fat frying process of dietary cooking oil plays a role in the generation of free radicals. Palm olein heated to 180°C temperature was tested for its effect on the activity of blood pressure regulating enzymes and lipid peroxidation. Methods: Forty-two adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally assigned into six groups. First group was fed with normal rat chow as control group, and the subsequent groups were fed with rat chow fortified with 15% weight/weight of fresh palm olein, palm olein heated once, palm olein heated twice, palm olein heated …

Widespread And Persistent Invasions Of Terrestrial Habitats Coincident With Larval Feeding Behavior Transitions During Snail-Killing Fly Evolution (Diptera: Sciomyzidae), Eric G. Chapman, Andrey A. Przhiboro, James D. Harwood, Benjamin A. Foote, Walter R. Hoeh

BACKGROUND: Transitions in habitats and feeding behaviors were fundamental to the diversification of life on Earth. There is ongoing debate regarding the typical directionality of transitions between aquatic and terrestrial habitats and the mechanisms responsible for the preponderance of terrestrial to aquatic transitions. Snail-killing flies (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) represent an excellent model system to study such transitions because their larvae display a range of feeding behaviors, being predators, parasitoids or saprophages of a variety of mollusks in freshwater, shoreline and dry terrestrial habitats. The remarkable genus Tetanocera (Tetanocerini) occupies five larval feeding groups and all of the habitat types mentioned above. …

MUC17 is a type 1 membrane-bound glycoprotein that is mainly expressed in the digestive tract. Recent studies have demonstrated that the aberrant overexpression of MUC17 is correlated with the malignant potential of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs); however, the exact regulatory mechanism of MUC17 expression has yet to be identified. Here, we provide the first report of the MUC17 regulatory mechanism under hypoxia, an essential feature of the tumor microenvironment and a driving force of cancer progression. Our data revealed that MUC17 was significantly induced by hypoxic stimulation through a hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α)-dependent pathway in some pancreatic cancer cells (e.g., …

Annual Fire Safety Report For Year 2011, Illinois State University, Environmental Health And Safety
Fire Safety Annual Reports
The Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) requires all institutions of higher education that provide residential housing facilities for students to develop an annual fire safety report. Elements of Illinois State University’s campus fire safety program consists of: fire prevention policies and practices, fire safety educational and training initiatives, description of fire protection equipment in the residence halls, emergency evacuation procedures, fire safety statistics, and plans for future improvements to the residence hall campus fire safety program. The annual fire safety report summarizes the elements of the campus fire safety program, which is administered and maintained by Environmental Health and Safety …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Greenhouse Gases Emission From Nitrogen Fertilizer Application In Palm Oil Industry / Norliyana Zin Zawawi, Zin Zawawi Norliyana
Student Works (2010-2019)
With the high current demand for palm oil, the production of this fast-growing industry should have minimal impact on the environment. For the purpose of planning and implementing mitigation, detailed information and data on the production processes are required. Thus, a study was conducted to collate data and information on the inputs used throughout the production processes where the scope of study has been confined to oil palm plantation and the utilization of nitrogen fertilizer. Data was collected and calculated using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) procedures, where environmental impacts and hotspots were identified and greenhouse gases emission from plantation was …

School of Psychology
Despite considerable research activity and application in treatment, the construct of craving remains poorly understood. We propose that cravings and urges are cognitive-emotional events in time, characterised by frequency, duration, intensity and salience. Commonly used measures of alcohol craving are reviewed, and their strengths and weaknesses identified. Most measures confound craving with behaviors, or with separable cognitive phenomena such as expectancies, intentions, or perceived behavioral control. These confounds have limited our advances in understanding the determinants and consequences of craving. Based on the criteria applied in this review, among the better performing multi-item measures are the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale …

In spring 1997, few people outside Uganda had heard of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The LRA arose in the late 1980s out of the ashes of Alice Lakwena’s Holy Spirit Movement, and over the next decade, LRA raids killed thousands of villagers in Northern Uganda. Hundreds of thousands were displaced, and an estimated 10,000 children were forcibly abducted by the LRA and brutally coerced into becoming killers, sex slaves or both. But in the spring of 1997, the LRA had yet to make CNN.

It wasn’t that he smelled different to each person. Rather, there were simply no known odors with which to compare Jake Longaway, leaving each person who came in contact with him to grasp for some familiarity that never came close to reality. I brainstormed on legal pads and designed elaborate spreadsheets to try and unravel each nuance. Eventually I landed on this: to me he smelled like the air rushing through my high school carpool’s slivered windows on a brisk autumn morning.

Using Facebook To Improve Social Communication Skills Of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Genna Graham
Theses and Dissertations
Facebook is a popular social media website that allows people to interact with friends and loved ones from far away and around the world. With its growing popularity, this study was conducted to examine if Facebook would improve social communication skills of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. A total of nine students with ASD on two school campuses participated in the study. A multiple baseline single subject design across settings was used. During the baseline, students were observed and their initiation and reciprocation in communication with peers and teachers were recorded. During the intervention, students were instructed to use Facebook …

Virtual And Traditional Slides For Teaching Cellular Morphology To Medical Laboratory Science Undergraduates: A Comparative Study Of Performance Outcomes, Retention, And Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Brooke L. Solberg
Theses and Dissertations
As a result of massive retirement and educational program expense and closure, the field of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is facing a critical workforce shortage. Combatting this issue by increasing undergraduate class size is a difficult proposition due to the intense psychomotor curricular requirements of MLS programs. Technological advances in the realm of virtual microscopy, however, provide an opportunity to reach more students by delivering psychomotor components in less restrictive formats. The purpose of this study was to analyze pedagogical comparability of virtual slides and traditional slides regarding immediate and delayed performance, self-efficacy perceptions, student opinion, and faculty observations. Specifically, …
