Public Relations 'Tech'niques: Vocational School Recruitment, Rachel Graeff
Theses and Dissertations
The problem is that the large majority of high school graduates pursue four-year college degrees when there are not enough professional jobs that require four-year degrees but rather require workers to have job-specific skills. These skills are taught by vocational schools at both the high school and the post-secondary levels. The purpose of this study was to determine what public relations techniques vocational schools use and how they can improve on these techniques to increase enrollment. Six in-depth interviews were conducted with PR/marketing practitioners at vocational schools to find out what techniques and channels their school uses to attract students. …

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a fundamental role in the immune system by detecting pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) to sense host infection. Ethanol at doses relevant for humans inhibits the pathogen induced cytokine response mediated through TLRs. The current study was designed to investigate the mechanisms of this effect by determining whether ethanol inhibits TLR3 and TLR4 mediated TNF-? secretion through inhibition of transcription factor activation or post-transcriptional effects. In NF-?B reporter mice, activation of NF-?B in vivo by LPS was inhibited by ethanol (LPS alone yielded 170,000?35,300 arbitrary units of light emission; LPS plus ethanol yielded 56,120?16880, p = …

In June 2007, a previously undescribed monkey known locally as “lesula” was found in the forests of the middle Lomami Basin in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We describe this new species as Cercopithecus lomamiensis sp. nov., and provide data on its distribution, morphology, genetics, ecology and behavior. C. lomamiensis is restricted to the lowland rain forests of central DRC between the middle Lomami and the upper Tshuapa Rivers. Morphological and molecular data confirm that C. lomamiensis is distinct from its nearest congener, C. hamlyni, from which it is separated geographically by both the Congo (Lualaba) and the Lomami …

Effect Of Nurses Living Fit? Exercise And Nutrition Intervention On Body Mass Index In Nurses, Karen Gabel Speroni
Effect Of Nurses Living Fit? Exercise And Nutrition Intervention On Body Mass Index In Nurses, Karen Gabel Speroni
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Overweight and obesity are increasing at alarming rates worldwide. In the healthcare setting, administrators are searching for evidence-based programs featuring interventions on healthy living to enable weight loss in overweight workers and maintenance of normal weight. This is especially true among professional nurses who often become "role models" for patients affected by illnesses induced by overweight status. The hospital-based Nurses Living Fit & trade; (NLF) intervention was developed and researched by nurses to decrease overweight in nurses.
Methods: This prospective, quasi-experimental, multi-center study evaluated changes in Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference between NLF and contrast nurse group …

Phylotranscriptomics To Bring The Understudied Into The Fold: Monophyletic Ostracoda, Fossil Placement, And Pancrustacean Phylogeny, Todd H. Oakley, Joanna M. Wolfe, Annie R. Lindgren, Alexander K. Zaharoff
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
An ambitious, yet fundamental goal for comparative biology is to understand the evolutionary relationships for all of life. However, many important taxonomic groups have remained recalcitrant to inclusion into broader scale studies. Here, we focus on collection of 9 new 454 transcriptome data sets from Ostracoda, an ancient and diverse group with a dense fossil record, which is often undersampled in broader studies. We combine the new transcriptomes with a new morphological matrix (including fossils) and existing expressed sequence tag, mitochondrial genome, nuclear genome, and ribosomal DNA data. Our analyses lead to new insights into ostracod and pancrustacean phylogeny. We …

An Economic Analysis Of Wine Grape Production In The State Of Connecticut, Jeremy L. Jelliffe
An Economic Analysis Of Wine Grape Production In The State Of Connecticut, Jeremy L. Jelliffe
Master's Theses
The Connecticut Wine and Vineyard industry has grown at a steady 3.9% per year over the past decade (ATTTB, 2009). Economic models estimate that the wineries sub-sector contributes $38 million dollars to the state economy and direct employment of 106 residents (Lopez et al., 2010). Programs to support and foster further growth of the industry and CT farm vineyard culture include the Department of Agriculture’s CT Wine Trail and the annual CT Wine festival (DOAG, 2010). Farmland preservation groups also support vineyard development since grape growing tends to secure tracts of farmland for long periods of time.

The Impact Of An Extended Outdoor Residential Workshop On Urban Students’ Learning And Appreciation Of Biodiversity, Yael Wyner, Amy Berkov
The Impact Of An Extended Outdoor Residential Workshop On Urban Students’ Learning And Appreciation Of Biodiversity, Yael Wyner, Amy Berkov
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Courses that focus on local flora and fauna are no longer included in biology curricula; therefore most K-12 teachers lack the expertise to teach their students about local biodiversity. When teachers are unable to recognize the plants and animals in their own surroundings, threats to the environment and biodiversity will inevitably remain abstractions to students. In the summer of 2011, a five-day plant and insect biodiversity workshop engaging thirteen pre-service and in-service urban public school teachers and five undergraduate biology teaching assistants was held at a forest field station outside of New York City. The goals were to develop an …
