Using Public Relations Techniques To Market Organic Food: Understanding Consumer Buying Behavior, Catherine Girone
Using Public Relations Techniques To Market Organic Food: Understanding Consumer Buying Behavior, Catherine Girone
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this research were to determine which consumers tend to purchase fresh organic food and which consumers tend to purchase packaged organic food, which type of messaging organic food distributors rely on to entice customers and which messages work most effectively to promote organic food consumption, and which channels different organic consumers use to gain knowledge about organic food. Implications for organic food marketing are discussed.
Bilirubin, Renal Hemodynamics, And Blood Pressure, David E. Stec, Peter Hosick, Joey P. Granger
Bilirubin, Renal Hemodynamics, And Blood Pressure, David E. Stec, Peter Hosick, Joey P. Granger
Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works
Bilirubin is generated from the breakdown of heme by heme oxygenase and the reduction of biliverdin by the enzyme biliverdin reductase. Several large population studies have reported a significant inverse correlation between plasma bilirubin levels and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Protection from cardiovascular disease is also observed in patients with Gilbert's syndrome which is a disease characterized by mutations in hepatic UGT1A1, the enzyme responsible for the conjugation of bilirubin into the bile. Despite the strong correlation between plasma bilirubin levels and the protection from cardiovascular disease, the mechanism by which increases in plasma bilirubin acts to protect against …
When Hope Grows Weary: An Arkansas Delta Town In Place And Time, Cindy Lynn Grisham
When Hope Grows Weary: An Arkansas Delta Town In Place And Time, Cindy Lynn Grisham
Student Theses and Dissertations
Tyronza is a small community located in the Delta region of northeast Arkansas. It served as the birthplace of the nationally known and highly contested Southern Tenant Farmers Union that drew strong local attention because of its socialist party support and its use of interracial locals. The town served as the union headquarters for a very short time before they were moved to nearby Memphis. The union created an intense emotional response among the townspeople, and though instances of brutality were hinted at over the years, no one would ever confess to the crimes. In 2001, Arkansas State University launched …

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is part of a wake-promoting circuit comprising the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) and locus coeruleus (LC). Although widely considered a "master clock," the SCN of adult rats is also sensitive to feedback regarding an animal's behavioral state. Interestingly, in rats at postnatal day (P)2, repeated arousing stimulation does not increase neural activation in the SCN, despite doing so in the LC and DMH. Here we show that, by P8, the SCN is activated by arousing stimulation and that selective destruction of LC terminals with DSP-4 blocks this activational effect. We next show that bidirectional projections among the …
Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti
Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti
Theses and Dissertations
Motivated by the demands of simulating flapping wings of Micro Air Vehicles, novel numerical methods were developed and evaluated for the dynamic simulation of membranes. For linear membranes, a mixed-form time-continuous Galerkin method was employed using trilinear space-time elements, and the entire space-time domain was discretized and solved simultaneously. For geometrically nonlinear membranes, the model incorporated two new schemes that were independently developed and evaluated. Time marching was performed using quintic Hermite polynomials uniquely determined by end-point jerk constraints. The single-step, implicit scheme was significantly more accurate than the most common Newmark schemes. For a simple harmonic oscillator, the scheme …
Voltage-Controlled Enzymes: The New Janus Bifrons, Carlos A. Villalba-Galea
Voltage-Controlled Enzymes: The New Janus Bifrons, Carlos A. Villalba-Galea
School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles
The Ciona intestinalis voltage-sensitive phosphatase, Ci-VSP, was the first Voltage-controlled Enzyme (VEnz) proven to be under direct command of the membrane potential. The discovery of Ci-VSP conjugated voltage sensitivity and enzymatic activity in a single protein. These two facets of Ci-VSP activity have provided a unique model for studying how membrane potential is sensed by proteins and a novel mechanism for control of enzymatic activity. These facets make Ci-VSP a fascinating and versatile enzyme. Ci-VSP has a voltage sensing domain (VSD) that resembles those found in voltage-gated channels (VGC). The VSD resides in the N-terminus and is formed by four …

Role Of Autophagy In The Response Of Hs578t Breast Tumor Cells To Radiation, Shweta Chakradeo
Role Of Autophagy In The Response Of Hs578t Breast Tumor Cells To Radiation, Shweta Chakradeo
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is the most commonly observed cancer type in women and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Radiation can be used to debulk tumors prior to surgery as well as to treat patients after surgery and/or chemotherapy. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that the anti –malarial drug chloroquine sensitizes breast cancer cell lines to radiation by suppression of autophagy which is a conservative catabolic process that can be cytoprotective. The scientific literature has demonstrated that many tumor cell systems undergo cytoprotective autophagy and that pharmacological or genetic inhibition of autophagy leads to other …

Ground Vehicle Navigation Using Magnetic Field Variation, Jeremiah A. Shockley
Ground Vehicle Navigation Using Magnetic Field Variation, Jeremiah A. Shockley
Theses and Dissertations
The Earth's magnetic field has been the bedrock of navigation for centuries. The latest research highlights the uniqueness of magnetic field measurements based on position due to large scale variations as well as localized perturbations. These observable changes in the Earth's magnetic field as a function of position provide distinct information which can be used for navigation. This dissertation describes ground vehicle navigation exploiting variation in Earth's magnetic field using a self-contained navigation system consisting of only a magnetometer and magnetic field maps. In order to achieve navigation, effective calibration enables repeatable magnetic field measurements from different vehicles and facilitates …

What The Wild Things Are: A Critique On Clare Palmer’S “What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?”, Joel P. Macclellan
What The Wild Things Are: A Critique On Clare Palmer’S “What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?”, Joel P. Macclellan
Between the Species
In this critique of “Clare Palmer’s “What (if anything) do we owe wild animals?”, I develop three points. First, I consider the case study which opens her essay and argue that that there are good empirical reasons to think that we should assist domesticated horses and not wild deer. Then, I critique Palmer’s claim that “wildness is not a capacity”, arguing that wildness connotes certain capacities which wild animals generally have and which domesticated animals generally lack. Lastly, I develop what I call the “supererogation problem” against Palmer’s preferred contextualist view, claiming that while the contextualist view doesn’t obligate us …
