Few people doubt that severe poverty is a pressing moral issue. But what sorts of obligations, if any, do affluent people have toward the severely poor? If one accepts the idea that one has some obligations to the severely poor there still remains disagreement about the magnitude of this obligation and when it obtains. I consider Peter Singer's influential “shallow pond” argument, which holds that affluent people have greater obligations toward the severely poor than ordinary moral judgments suggest. Critics hold that Singer's view is excessively demanding and therefore untenable. I thus turn to the parable of the Good Samaritan …

Monosynaptic Functional Connectivity In Cerebral Cortex During Wakefulness And Under Graded Levels Of Anesthesia, Jeannette A. Vizuete, Siveshigan Pillay, Kamran Diba, Kristina M. Ropella, Anthony G. Hudetz

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The balance between excitation and inhibition is considered to be of significant importance for neural computation and cognitive function. Excitatory and inhibitory functional connectivity in intact cortical neuronal networks in wakefulness and graded levels of anesthesia has not been systematically investigated. We compared monosynaptic excitatory and inhibitory spike transmission probabilities using pairwise cross-correlogram (CCG) analysis. Spikes were measured at 64 sites in the visual cortex of rats with chronically implanted microelectrode arrays during wakefulness and three levels of anesthesia produced by desflurane. Anesthesia decreased the number of active units, the number of functional connections, and the strength of excitatory connections. …

BACKGROUND: -We evaluated the viability of I(Kur) as a target for maintenance of sinus rhythm in patients with a history of atrial fibrillation through the testing of MK-0448, a novel I(Kur) inhibitor. METHODS AND RESULTS: -In vitro MK-0448 studies demonstrated strong inhibition of I(Kur) with minimal off-target activity. In vivo MK-0448 studies in normal anesthetized dogs demonstrated significant prolongation of the atrial refractory period compared with vehicle controls without affecting the ventricular refractory period. In studies of a conscious dog heart failure model, sustained AF was terminated with bolus intravenous MK-0448 doses of 0.03 and 0.1 mg/kg. These data led …
