Motion Capture Of Character Interactions With A Rope, Bryce Zachary Porter Oct 2012

Motion Capture Of Character Interactions With A Rope, Bryce Zachary Porter

Theses and Dissertations

We present a solution to animating interactions between characters and thin, non-rigid bodies using a passive optical motion capture system. Prior work in human body motion capture can accurately recreate human motion but this work is not adequate because it does not allow for interactions with a non-rigid body. Prior work in face and cloth motion capture handles non-rigid planes but rope is better handled with a curved spline rather than a curved plane. The segmented motion is in the form of un-indexed motion capture data. After segmenting the motion of the thin, non-rigid body and the human character the …

Reducing Unlawful Prescription Drug Promotion: Is The Public Health Being Served By An Enforcement Approach That Focuses On Punishment?, Vicki W. Girard Oct 2012

Reducing Unlawful Prescription Drug Promotion: Is The Public Health Being Served By An Enforcement Approach That Focuses On Punishment?, Vicki W. Girard

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Despite the imposition of increasingly substantial fines and recently successful efforts to impose individual liability on corporate executives under the Park doctrine, punishing pharmaceutical companies and their executives for unlawful promotional activities has not been as successful in achieving compliance with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) as the protection of the public health demands. Over the past decade, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have shifted their focus from correction and compliance to a more punitive model when it comes to allegedly unlawful promotion of pharmaceuticals. The shift initially focused …

Recording simultaneously from essentially all of the relevant neurons in a local circuit is crucial to understand how they collectively represent information. Here we show that the combination of a large, dense multielectrode array and a novel, mostly automated spike-sorting algorithm allowed us to record simultaneously from a highly overlapping population of >200 ganglion cells in the salamander retina. By combining these methods with labeling and imaging, we showed that up to 95% of the ganglion cells over the area of the array were recorded. By measuring the coverage of visual space by the receptive fields of the recorded cells, …

Interview With Albert Fong (2012), Albert Fong, California State University, Monterey Bay

Chinatown Renewal Project

The primary focus of this interview centered around Chinatown with an emphasis on the Republic Cafe. Mr. Fong's attention to detail leads the interview through many different time periods and subjects as his recollection takes him to different places. Mr. Fong begins the interview with discussing the Republic Cafe, and moves into recollection about what Chinatown was like as a young man. Throughout his interview, we are given anecdotes about his family, the history of Chinatown or stories from the Republic Cafe. We find that much of his father's history is unknown, but what is known Mr. Fong gives us …

A Case Of A Male With Fever And Fatigue, Steve Ting

The Medicine Forum

This is a case of a 78 year old Caucasian gentleman who presented to the hospital in the early summer with complaints of high fevers and progressive fatigue. The patient lives near Philadelphia and enjoys doing yard work. He reported finding a tick attached to the skin near his groin approximately 3 weeks prior to admission. The tick was removed; however the patient was unsure of the duration of the tick attachment. He also denied developing any significant rash in that area. He had no recent sick contacts and no recent history of travel. He began developing fever spikes up …

Mechanisms Of Psoriatic Arthritis, Laurel Myers Oct 2012

Mechanisms Of Psoriatic Arthritis, Laurel Myers

Theses

Psoriasis (Ps) is the most common chronic autoimmune disease in the United States. The immune system releases proinflammatory cytokines and growth factors that accelerate the growth of skin cells which accumulate and form thick red patches of skin on various parts of the body. About 25 percent of psoriasis patients develop inflammatory arthritis in which inflammation progresses to joints and entheses. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) patients exhibit joint pain, stiffness, and swelling which can affect any part of the body. PsA occurs when the immune cells release cytokines that act on healthy cells and tissues to induce skin and joint inflammation. …

Scaling Flow Path Processes To Fluvial Landscapes: An Integrated Field And Model Assessment Of Temperature And Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics In A River-Floodplain-Aquifer System, Ashley M. Helton, Geoffrey C. Poole, Robert A. Payn, Clemente Izurieta, Jack Arthur Stanford Oct 2012

Payn, Clemente Izurieta, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Biogeochemical cycling within river ecosystems is strongly influenced by geomorphic and hydrologic dynamics. To scale point observations of temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) to a hydrologically complex and dynamic three-dimensional river-floodplain-aquifer system, we integrated empirical models of temperature and biotic oxygen utilization with a recently published hydrogeomorphic model. The hydrogeomorphic model simulates channel flow, floodplain inundation, and surface-subsurface water exchange on the 16 km(2) Nyack Floodplain, Middle Fork Flathead River, Montana, USA. Model results were compared to observed data sets of DO to test the hypothesis that complexity in spatiotemporal patterns of biogeochemistry emerges from a comparatively simple representation of …

Basal forebrain cholinergic neurons, which innervate the hippocampus and cortex, have been implicated in many forms of cognitive function. Immunolesion-based methods in animal models have been widely used to study the role of acetylcholine (ACh) neurotransmission in these processes, with variable results. Cholinergic neurons have been shown to release both glutamate and ACh, making it difficult to deduce the specific contribution of each neurotransmitter on cognition when neurons are eliminated. Understanding the precise roles of ACh in learning and memory is critical because drugs that preserve ACh are used as treatment for cognitive deficits. It is therefore important to define …

Capture And Characterization Of Dioxygen Reactive Intermediates In Cyp51 Catalysis, Gareth Kent Jennings Oct 2012

Capture And Characterization Of Dioxygen Reactive Intermediates In Cyp51 Catalysis, Gareth Kent Jennings

Theses and Dissertations

The cytochromes P450 (CYPs) are a superfamily of biological catalysts that are ubiquitous throughout the biological domain. CYPs are heme-b containing monooxygenases which oxidize substrates with the help of accessory redox partners. CYP substrates include endogenous compounds required for many biological functions and homeostasis, such as steroids, as well as the majority of clinically used drugs and environmental xenobiotics. The majority of studies that have been performed to date are on P450cam (CYP101) from Pseudomonas putida. Of the numerous reactions catalyzed by CYPs, unactivated carbon-carbon bond cleavage, is one of particular versatility. Being unique in their catalytic mechanisms, the C-C …

Optimization Of Biodiesel Production Plants, Nghi T. Nguyen Oct 2012

Optimization Of Biodiesel Production Plants, Nghi T. Nguyen

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A conventional biodiesel plant utilizing two distillation columns to purify unreacted reactants and products is considered in this study. Thermodynamic analyses are used to assess the performance of the existing distillation columns, and reduce the costs of operation by appropriate retrofits in a biodiesel production plant. After the retrofits, the overall exergy loss for the two columns has decreased from 2430.87 kW to 1674.12 kW.

A reactive distillation is developed for esterification of lauric acid with methanol using equilibrium and nonequilibrium models. Equilibrium modeling dominated during last few decades due to their straightforward mathematical modeling. In reality, separation depends on …

Swimming In Deep Waters. A Response To "A Review Of Teaching As A Moral Practice", Deborah Schussler, Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Mary E. Diez, Peter Murrell Oct 2012

Swimming In Deep Waters. A Response To "A Review Of Teaching As A Moral Practice", Deborah Schussler, Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Mary E. Diez, Peter Murrell

Democracy & Education

The authors respond to a review of their book, Teaching as a Moral Practice: Defining, Developing, and Assessing Dispositions. The authors emphasize a vision of shared commitments for quality teaching whereby teacher-educators instill and nurture the wisdom and virtue that a moral teacher must possess in order to teach in a variety of circumstances where clear-cut answers do not exist. In addition, teacher-educators help teachers discern how, in that context, they should enact particular knowledge, skills, and commitments to reach desired ends. The key to enact this vision of teaching as a shared, moral practice is critical colleagueship.

Hype And Hostility For Hybrid Companies: A Fourth Sector Case Study, Ryan J. Gaffney Oct 2012

Hype And Hostility For Hybrid Companies: A Fourth Sector Case Study, Ryan J. Gaffney

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

The traditional three-sector ownership model of society grows outmoded. The prevalence of quasi-governmental agencies, public-private partnerships, and government bailouts blurs the line between the public and private sectors. Of concern to this article, however, is the blurring between the private and nonprofit sectors. The cross-pollination is so widespread that a call stands to amend the existing model with an “emerging fourth sector.” The social entrepreneurs attempting to bridge the gap between sectors face limitations from the outset of their venture; legislators did not design traditional legal entities for a “double bottom line” that includes social impact as well as profit. …
