Reintegration Of Child Soldiers In Burundi: A Tracer Study, Mark J.D. Jordans, Ivan H. Komproe, Wietse A. Tol, Aline Ndayisaba, Theodora Nisabwe, Brandon A. Kohrt

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Substantial attention and resources are aimed at the reintegration of child soldiers, yet rigorous evaluations are rare.

Methods

This tracer study was conducted among former child soldiers (N=452) and never-recruited peers (N=191) who participated in an economic support program in Burundi. Socio-economic outcome indicators were measured retrospectively for the period before receiving support (T1; 2005–06); immediately afterwards (T2; 2006–07); and at present (T3; 2010). Participants also rated present functional impairment and mental health indicators.

Results

Participants reported improvement on all indicators, especially economic opportunity and social integration. At present no difference existed between both groups on any of the …

Acute Haematogenous Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Osteomyelitis In An Adult: Case Report And Review Of Literature, A. Dhanoa, V.A. Singh, A. Mansor, M.Y. Yusof, K.T. Lim, Kwai Lin Thong

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has of late emerged as a cause of community-acquired infections among immunocompetent adults without risk factors. Skin and soft tissue infections represent the majority of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) clinical presentations, whilst invasive and life-threatening illness like necrotizing pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis, pyomyositis, osteomyelitis and sepsis syndrome are less common. Although more widely described in the pediatric age group, the occurrence of CA-MRSA osteomyelitis in adults is an uncommonly reported entity. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe an invasive CA-MRSA infection in a 28 year-old previously healthy male, manifesting with bacteraemia, osteomyelitis of femur, pyomyositis and septic …

Framing Terrorism: How The Tampa Tribune And Tampa Bay Times Portrayed Sami Al‐Arian In 2001, Wendy Biddlecombe

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

This study examines the framing of Sami Al‐Arian in 2001 by the local, mainstream Tampa Bay press, and compares this portrayal to the outcome of Al‐ Arian’s 2005 trial. In the weeks after the 9/11 attacks, both the Tampa Tribune and Tampa Bay Times covered Al‐Arian in a negative and stereotypical manner, in sharp contrast with the outcome of a 2005 trial that acquitted Al‐Arian of the most serious charges of aiding known terrorists. The theoretical base of this paper is framing, stereotype, and the social construction of reality, and finds the way the press portrayed Al‐Arian had a direct …

The Anchor, Volume 126.07: October 24, 2012, Hope College

The Anchor: 2012

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
