Entering Liberty's Refuge (Some Assembly Required) Panel Discussion On Engaging Liberty's Refuge: Introduction, Gregory P. Magarian Jan 2012

Entering Liberty's Refuge (Some Assembly Required) Panel Discussion On Engaging Liberty's Refuge: Introduction, Gregory P. Magarian

Scholarship@WashULaw

This brief discussion of a book I greatly admire, by an author I am fortunate to know as a colleague and a friend, cannot hope to capture all of the book’s important and interesting contributions. I will simply describe three of the book’s primary facets. Liberty’s Refuge is, first, a work of intellectual history: Inazu seeks to recover from history’s tall grass a legally respected Anglo-American tradition of assembly. The book is also a work of constitutional interpretation and legal analysis: Inazu aims to revitalize the right of assembly for our time, critiquing the legal decisions that he sees as …

Does Ideology Matter In Bankruptcy? Voting Behavior On The Courts Of Appeals, Rafael I. Pardo, Jonathan Remy Nash Jan 2012

Does Ideology Matter In Bankruptcy? Voting Behavior On The Courts Of Appeals, Rafael I. Pardo, Jonathan Remy Nash

Scholarship@WashULaw

This Article empirically examines the question of whether courts of appeals judges cast ideological votes in the context of bankruptcy. The empirical study is unique insofar as it is the first to specifically examine the voting behavior of circuit court judges in bankruptcy cases. More importantly, it focuses on a particular type of dispute that arises in bankruptcy - debt-dischargeability determinations. The study implements this focused approach in order to reduce heterogeneity in result. We find, contrary to our hypotheses, no evidence that circuit court judges engage in ideological voting in bankruptcy cases. We do find, however, non-ideological factors - …

Epigenetic Events Suggest A Distinct Molecular Pathogenesis In Braf-Associated Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Ogechukwu Eze Jan 2012

Epigenetic Events Suggest A Distinct Molecular Pathogenesis In Braf-Associated Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Ogechukwu Eze

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

EPIGENETIC EVENTS SUGGEST A DISTINCT MOLECULAR PATHOGENESIS IN BRAF-ASSOCIATED PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER.

Ogechukwu Eze, Lee Starker, William Long, Robert Udelsman, Peyman Björklund, and Tobias Carling. Department of Surgery, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, USA.

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) associated with a somatic V-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) V600E mutation has been associated with a more aggressive phenotype (i.e. extrathyroidal extension, lymph node metastasis, high TNM stage and recurrence) than those with wildtype (WT) BRAF. The underlying molecular mechanism for this association is incompletely clarified. Epigenetic alterations, such as DNA methylation participate with genetic abnormalities …

Atheist Scripts In A Nation Of Religiosity: Identity Politics Within The Atheist Movement, Jacqueline Frost Jan 2012

Atheist Scripts In A Nation Of Religiosity: Identity Politics Within The Atheist Movement, Jacqueline Frost

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the use of identity politics within the atheist movement at both the national and individual levels. I conducted a content analysis of two national atheist groups and three best-selling atheist authors in order to assess the use of atheist identity politics at the national level. I then conducted 15 in-depth interviews with a sample of atheists in Portland, Oregon about their atheist identity and their reactions to and identification with national atheist movement strategies. Findings suggest that national atheist organizations and atheist authors are using a strategy of identity politics that encourage atheists to "come out" as …

The Current State Of Asd Research, Alex Power Jan 2012

The Current State Of Asd Research, Alex Power

Honors Projects

The rising rates of autism diagnosis among children is becoming a topic of growing interest among many arms of the research community. The most recent CDC data and statistics suggests that the prevalence of autism in the US is about 11.3 per 1000 children; this equates to about 1 in every 88 births (CDC, 2012). The trending increase in prevalence has increased the need for autism research greatly. So much is unknown about the nature of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) that there is a seemingly endless range of subject matter for pertinent research. There is currently such a surge of …

Novel Etomidate Derivatives, J. Robert Sneyd Jan 2012

Novel Etomidate Derivatives, J. Robert Sneyd

More Faculty of Health Research

Etomidate is a well established intravenous anaesthetic agent which has been widely used. Recognised limitations of the agent include adrenocortical suppression, myoclonus and post-operative nausea and vomiting, PONV. MOC-etomidate, carboetomidate and MOC-carboetomidate are novel etomidate derivatives. Their preclinical data and their potential for human administration are critically reviewed. 'Soft' pharmacology (rapid ester hydrolysis) limits the duration of action of MOC-etomidate and MOC-carboetomidate giving them rapid offset after administration is discontinued. Adrenocortical depression is minimised either by ester hydrolysis or by structural change to the etomidate molecule. Potential limitations include the yet to be determined incidence of myoclonus and PONV if …

Long-Term Responses Of Phalaris Arundinacea And Columbia River Bottomland Vegetation To Managed Flooding, Tina Schantz Farrelly Jan 2012

Long-Term Responses Of Phalaris Arundinacea And Columbia River Bottomland Vegetation To Managed Flooding, Tina Schantz Farrelly

Dissertations and Theses

I sought to determine the effect of managed flooding on Phalaris arundinacea L. and other plant species distributions in a large wetland complex, Smith and Bybee Wetlands (SBW), in northwestern Oregon. Altered hydrology has reduced historically high spring flow and prematurely initiated the historic summer drying period at SBW. This alteration has increased the coverage of invasive plants (e.g., P. arundinacea) causing a decrease in native plant cover and thus degrading ecological functions. SBW managers installed a water control structure (WCS) between SBW and the Columbia Slough/River system to impound winter rainfall and thus approximate the ecological benefits that natural …

The other stories in this collection follow the daughters and granddaughters who have to navigate their own lives in the shadow of this abandonment. Spanning multiple decades, Annie's decision remains a pivotal …

Let's Try To Change It: Psychiatric Stigmatization, Consumer/Survivor Activism, And The Link And Phelan Model, María Jimena Alvarado Chavarría Jan 2012

Let's Try To Change It: Psychiatric Stigmatization, Consumer/Survivor Activism, And The Link And Phelan Model, María Jimena Alvarado Chavarría

Dissertations and Theses

Stigma has been described as the most significant obstacle to quality of life for individuals with major psychiatric diagnoses (Sartorious, 1998). Much of the psychological literature on stigma focuses on individual attributes and interactions at the micro level, rather than macro level dynamics. In critiquing this traditional focus, Link and Phelan (2001) present a model in which stigma ensues when labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss, and discrimination co-occur in a situation of power imbalance. Even as the model fills a gap in conceptualizing stigma, its emphasis on power is unidirectional and fails to account for power as a form of …
