A Large Cervidae Holocene Accumulation In Eastern Brazil: An Example Of Extreme Taphonomical Control In A Cave Environment, Alex Hubbe, Augusto S. Auler Jan 2012

A Large Cervidae Holocene Accumulation In Eastern Brazil: An Example Of Extreme Taphonomical Control In A Cave Environment, Alex Hubbe, Augusto S. Auler

International Journal of Speleology

A remarkable cervid bone accumulation occurs at a single passage (named Cervid Passage; CP) at Lapa Nova, a maze cave in eastern Brazil. CP lies away from cave entrances, is a typical pitfall passage and contains bone remains of at least 121 cervids, besides few bats, peccaries and rodents remains. There is no evidence of water (or sediment) flow at the site and in general bones lack post depositional alterations and display anatomical proximity, suggesting that the majority of the remains found inside CP (mainly cervids) are due to animals that after entering the cave got trapped in the site. …

Selective Capture Of Transcribed Sequences: A Promising Approach For Investigating Bacterium-Insect Interactions, Ruisheng An, Parwinder Grewal Jan 2012

Selective Capture Of Transcribed Sequences: A Promising Approach For Investigating Bacterium-Insect Interactions, Ruisheng An, Parwinder Grewal

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Bacterial interactions with eukaryotic hosts are complex processes which vary from pathogenic to mutualistic. Identification of bacterial genes differentially expressed in the host, promises to unravel molecular mechanisms driving and maintaining such interactions. Several techniques have been developed in the past 20 years to investigate bacterial gene expression within their hosts. The most commonly used techniques include in-vivo expression technology, signature-tagged mutagenesis, differential fluorescence induction, and cDNA microarrays. However, the limitations of these techniques in analyzing bacterial in-vivo gene expression indicate the need to develop alternative tools. With many advantages over the other methods for analyzing bacterial in-vivo gene expression, …

Effects Of Hypoxia Exposure On Hepatic Cytochrome P450 1a (Cyp1a) Expression In Atlantic Croaker: Molecular Mechanisms Of Cyp1a Down-Regulation, Md. Saydur Rahman, Peter Thomas Jan 2012

Effects Of Hypoxia Exposure On Hepatic Cytochrome P450 1a (Cyp1a) Expression In Atlantic Croaker: Molecular Mechanisms Of Cyp1a Down-Regulation, Md. Saydur Rahman, Peter Thomas

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Hypoxia-inducible factor-α (HIF-α) and cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) are biomarkers of environmental exposure to hypoxia and organic xenobiotic chemicals that act through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, respectively. Many aquatic environments heavily contaminated with organic chemicals, such as harbors, are also hypoxic. Recently, we and other scientists reported HIF-α genes are upregulated by hypoxia exposure in aquatic organisms, but the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia regulation of CYP1A expression have not been investigated in teleost fishes. As a first step in understanding the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia modulation of CYP1A expression in fish, we characterized CYP1A cDNA from croaker liver. Hypoxia exposure …

The New Kinship, Naomi R. Cahn

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Over the past century, the Supreme Court has articulated numerous doctrines that protect family privacy. These doctrines are not, however, well-suited to the brave new world of families formed through donor eggs, sperm, and embryos. As the number of donor-conceived children born to same-sex and heterosexual couples and to single parents increases, and as these families develop connections to one another, the law has not yet adjusted. This Article provides an extensive mapping of these “donor-conceived family communities,” and it reaches two major conclusions that support the development of these new families. First, relational interests, the traditional focus in family …

International Trade And Investment Law And Carbon Management Technologies, Steve Charnovitz Jan 2012

International Trade And Investment Law And Carbon Management Technologies, Steve Charnovitz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases will require the development of carbon management technologies that are not currently available or that are not currently cost-effective. While market mechanisms such as carbon pricing must play a central role in stimulating the development of these technologies, governmental policy aimed at fostering carbon management technologies and lowering their costs must also play a part. Both types of policies will form part of an optimal greenhouse gas control portfolio. This article develops a framework of international trade and investment law insofar as they may affect carbon management technologies. While it is commonly perceived that international …

Enlightenment Economics And The Framing Of The U.S. Constitution, Renée Lettow Lerner Jan 2012

Enlightenment Economics And The Framing Of The U.S. Constitution, Renée Lettow Lerner

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Some scholars have argued that the Framers of the U.S. Constitution did not have a common set of views on economics, or that the Constitution, except perhaps in isolated clauses, does not reflect any specific economic views. The principal Framers did, in fact, share a basic set of economic views, though of course they did not agree on all economic questions. Their shared economic views were common to enlightenment thinkers: promoting free trade, curtailing rent-seeking (the transfer of wealth from producers to non-producers through political power), and, in most instances, eliminating monopolies. These economic views permeate the Constitution and are …

Legal Disputes Related To Climate Change Will Continue For A Century, Richard J. Pierce Jr Jan 2012

Legal Disputes Related To Climate Change Will Continue For A Century, Richard J. Pierce Jr

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Professor Pierce summarizes the expected effects of anthropogenic climate change, discusses the expensive and ineffective efforts that have been attempted to date to mitigate climate change, describes a more promising strategy for the future, and explains why the US must prepare to make major changes in law to adapt to some significant changes in climate that are inevitable. This paper was originally presented to the DC Bar as the 2012 Harold Leventhal Lecture.

Landscape Level Management Of Parks, Refuges, And Preserves For Ecosystem Resilience, Robert L. Glicksman, Graeme S. Cumming Jan 2012

Landscape Level Management Of Parks, Refuges, And Preserves For Ecosystem Resilience, Robert L. Glicksman, Graeme S. Cumming

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The laws governing management of national parks, wildlife refuges, and other federal land preserves seek to conserve natural resources in highly treasured locations. The nature of conservation has changed substantially, however, since Congress first enacted these laws. It is clear that protected ecosystems are influenced by outside events and that management of human-dominated ecosystems is essential to long-term sustainability of the ecosystems containing protected preserves. The effects of climate change, invasive species introductions, and other broad-scale anthropogenic influences are expected to alter the functioning of natural systems in ways that will make it impossible for protected areas to function as …

The Participation Interest, Spencer A. Overton Jan 2012

The Participation Interest, Spencer A. Overton

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Lack of participation is a primary problem with money in politics. Relatively few people make political contributions—less than one-half of one percent of the population provides the bulk of the money that politicians collect from individual contributors. This Article introduces and details the state’s interest in expanding citizen participation in financing politics. Rather than focus solely on pushing an incomplete anticorruption framework to restrict special interest influence, reformers should also embrace a strategy of giving more people influence. Reformers should accept that money produces speech and that “special interests” in the form of grassroots organizations are a democratic good that …

In Time, Bfa Thesis Exhibition By Clay Crawford, Clay Howell Crawford

Honors Theses

In Time, my BFA solo exhibition, was an installation of three four-foot-by-six-foot looping video projections shone directly onto the walls of Meek Hall's Gallery 130. create this body of work, I performed as both photographer and subject. Performance in its simplest form exists completely autonomous of technology, and when the photographer or videographer documents a performance s/he produces something and more tangible than simply engaging in the performance's live exchange. As I work with time-based media, the idea of time is central to my art-making process and conceptual development. In these works, I alter standard time structures by imposing my …

Technical And Stylistic Changes In Jewelry From The Time Of Theophilus To The Time Of Cellini, Katherine Gresham Hodges Jan 2012

Technical And Stylistic Changes In Jewelry From The Time Of Theophilus To The Time Of Cellini, Katherine Gresham Hodges

Honors Theses

My thesis consists of research from an art historical perspective concerning a number of changes in the design, style, and fabrication of jewelry from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the influences that brought about those changes. I have found that social political, geographical, technological, and philosophical shifts in the Renaissance all wielded significant impact on the changes in design and style of jewelry. I have approached the subject by studying jewelry as an art form equal to other art forms such painting and sculpting, rather than as a decorative art or craft. By focusing on one prominent goldsmith …

The River Thief: A Collection Of Short Fiction, Andrew David Paul

Honors Theses

With this collection of short stories, 1 attempt to ereate linked pieces with a heavy emphasis on Southern Jewish identity and Eastern European folktale influences. It is in my opinion that the cuiTent Refomi Judaism movement, while modem and accessible. seeks to imitate popular. Western religious trends with no emphasis on uniqueness or authenticity. I looked towards Southern writers with distinct tones and storytelling abilities such as Lewis Nordan, Mark Richard, and Ban*y Hannah for inspiration. In addition, 1 incoiporated iconic Jewish archetyties into some of these stories such as the Wandering Jew and the Golem ot Prague. Although Southern …

Kiobel, Subject Matter Jurisdiction, And The Alien Tort Statute, Bradford R. Clark Jan 2012

Kiobel, Subject Matter Jurisdiction, And The Alien Tort Statute, Bradford R. Clark

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the Second Circuit’s decision in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, a case holding that federal courts lack jurisdiction under the Alien Tort Statute (“ATS”) over claims against corporations. Although the parties have focused on issues of corporate liability under the ATS, there is a logically antecedent question of subject matter jurisdiction that the Court should decide before considering corporate liability. All of the parties in Kiobel — whether corporate or individual — are aliens. Understood in its full legal and historical context, the ATS was a jurisdictional statute that did not apply to suits …

Would Predatory Drillhole Frequency On Chione Spp. Increase Under The Suggested Climate Change Scenario? Comparing Pleistocene And Modern Rhodolith Beds, Carlos E. Cintra-Buenrostro

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The analysis of predatory drillholes allow paleontologists to reconstruct trophic relationships of ancient systems. To evaluate the potential effects of climate and sea level change on predation frequency by gastropods on bivalves, species of the genus Chione from the Gulf of California were selected because they are a commercially exploited resource - at least locally - and abundant in both modern and Pleistocene (sea level high stand of oxygen substage 5e) samples from rhodolith beds. The present study focused to answer a practical question: would predation on Chione spp. increase under the suggested climate - warming - change scenario? A …

Antibiotic Resistance Of Bacteria Isolated From Leafy Green Salad Vegetables, Brooke Elizabeth Reynolds Jan 2012

Antibiotic Resistance Of Bacteria Isolated From Leafy Green Salad Vegetables, Brooke Elizabeth Reynolds

Honors Theses

Bacterial isolates obtained from samples of five varieties of leafy green vegetables were tested for resistance to four different antibiotics: ampicillin. erythromycin, streptomycin, and tetracycline. Isolates were separated based on media type (TSA vs. R2A media), sterilization techniques (surface sterilized vs. unsterilized). cultivation methods (conventional vs. organic), and specific lettuce type origins. Resistances were tested using a microscale broth culture technique, which allowed for growth of isolates in the presence of different concentrations of antibiotic. Antibiotic resistance was observed in all groups of isolates, although levels of resistance varied depending on the particular isolate and the antibiotic tested. Isolates were …

Currency: The Fantastic Festival Of The Mind, Kristen Marie Vise Jan 2012

Currency: The Fantastic Festival Of The Mind, Kristen Marie Vise

Honors Theses

Currency: The Fantastic Festival of the Mind is an exploration of memory and ephemerality through abstracted imagery originating in the wonder of childhood, the magic of festivals, and the divinity of nature. In the work, an underlying “current” or essence of wonder serves as the “currency” of subjects ranging from carousels to clocks to Sycamore trees. The work explores fragmented concepts of time and memory that intertwine with whimsical imagery in the mind over time, leading to the development of fanciful percepdons and reassembled experience. Pulling from sources as diverse as Environmental Graphic Design, contemporary grapic design. Surrealism, and German …

Learning Sparse Representations For Fruit Fly Gene Expression Pattern Image Annotation And Retreival, Lei Yuan, Alexander Woodard, Shuiwang Ji, Yuan Jiang, Zhi-Hua Zhou, Sudhir Kumar, Jieping Ye

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Background: Fruit fly embryogenesis is one of the best understood animal development systems, and the spatiotemporal gene expression dynamics in this process are captured by digital images. Analysis of these high-throughput images will provide novel insights into the functions, interactions, and networks of animal genes governing development. To facilitate comparative analysis, web-based interfaces have been developed to conduct image retrieval based on body part keywords and images. Currently, the keyword annotation of spatiotemporal gene expression patterns is conducted manually. However, this manual practice does not scale with the continuously expanding collection of images. In addition, existing image retrieval systems based …

Mapping And Mocking: Spanish Cuisine And Ramón Gómez De La Serna’S “El Primer Mapa Gastronómico De España”, Rebecca Ingram Phd Jan 2012

Mapping And Mocking: Spanish Cuisine And Ramón Gómez De La Serna’S “El Primer Mapa Gastronómico De España”, Rebecca Ingram Phd

Spanish: Faculty Scholarship

In July of 1924 Spanish vanguardist Ramón Gómez de la Serna published “El primer mapa gastronómico de España” in the humor weekly Buen humor (1921-1931). Although Ramón’s map locates and catalogues Spain’s alimentary wealth and diversity, his accompanying vignette mockingly deconstructs the supposed objectivity of the map and the cartographic authority of its creator, the “cartógrafo gastronómico.” This study places Ramón’s commentary and map in the historical and social context of 1920s Spain, a period during which two very different lifestyles co-existed in the same Spanish “nation.” Ramón’s cartógrafo exists at the margins of both versions of Spain. Ramón’s mocking …

Elk Hunting On Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge: Impacts On Elk Movement And Aspen Regeneration, Christopher E. Dwight Jan 2012

Elk Hunting On Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge: Impacts On Elk Movement And Aspen Regeneration, Christopher E. Dwight

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"In the arid West, quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) cover less than 10% of the forest landscape, yet support a disproportionate diversity of native plants and animals. When elk (Cervus elaphus) become overabundant, browsing prevents aspen regeneration, reduces survival, and consequently impacts local biodiversity. Given this, Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) initiated a limited annual elk hunt beginning in fall 2010. This study examines whether the hunt affected elk usage of the refuge and, indirectly, aspen growth and regeneration. To determine elk movement and usage of the refuge prior to and following the elk hunt, 34 radio-collared cow elk were monitored …

The Impact Of Black Swan (Cygnus Atratus) Grazing On The Seagrass Halophila Ovalis In The Lower Swan River Estuary, Gary Choney Jan 2012

The Impact Of Black Swan (Cygnus Atratus) Grazing On The Seagrass Halophila Ovalis In The Lower Swan River Estuary, Gary Choney

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Grazing is an important ecosystem process, influencing community structure and rates of ecosystem processes. Although grazing on seagrasses is generally considered to be minor in many temperate regions of the world, waterfowl are often considered significant grazers in temperate lagoons and estuaries. This study examined spatial and temporal variation in swan abundance, grazing pressure and the impact grazing has on seagrass. Little is known on how grazing rates vary on larger water bodies in the southern hemisphere at different times of year and whether temporal changes in grazing rates affect the ability of seagrasses to tolerate grazing. The plant response …

Compositional Stability And Diversity Of Vascular Plant Communities Following Logging Disturbance In Appalachian Forests, R. Travis Belote, Robert H. Jones, Thomas F. Wieboldt Jan 2012

Compositional Stability And Diversity Of Vascular Plant Communities Following Logging Disturbance In Appalachian Forests, R. Travis Belote, Robert H. Jones, Thomas F. Wieboldt

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Human-caused changes in disturbance regimes and introductions of nonnative species have the potential to result in widespread, directional changes in forest community structure. The degree that plant community composition persists or changes following disturbances depends on the balance between local extirpation and colonization by new species, including nonnatives. In this study, we examined species losses and gains, and entry of native vs. exotic species to determine how oak forests in the Appalachian Mountains might shift in species composition following a gradient of pulse disturbances (timber harvesting). We asked (1) how compositional stability of the plant community (resistance and resilience) was …

Network Modeling Of Bvd Transmission, Mark Tinsley, Fraser I. Lewis, Franz Brulisauer Jan 2012

Network Modeling Of Bvd Transmission, Mark Tinsley, Fraser I. Lewis, Franz Brulisauer

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Endemic diseases of cattle, such as bovine viral diarrhea, have significant impact on production efficiency of food of animal origin with consequences for animal welfare and climate change reduction targets. Many modeling studies focus on the local scale, examining the on-farm dynamics of this infectious disease. However, insight into prevalence and control across a network of farms ultimately requires a network level approach. Here, we implement understanding of infection dynamics, gained through these detailed on-farm modeling studies, to produce a national scale model of bovine viral diarrhea virus transmission. The complex disease epidemiology and on-farm dynamics are approximated using SIS …
