Promising To Be Prudent: A Private Law Approach To Mortgage Loan Regulation In Common-Interest Communities, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers, Jerome Organ Jan 2012

Promising To Be Prudent: A Private Law Approach To Mortgage Loan Regulation In Common-Interest Communities, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers, Jerome Organ

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This Article explores one possible private law prescription that may help common-interest communities avoid the financial disaster associated with foreclosure epidemics-a financing restriction that would limit (1) the ability of any homeowner in a common-interest community to borrow excessively against the value of her home, and (2) the ability of lenders to make loans that a homeowner does not have the ability to repay. Part I of this Article begins in the Great Depression with a discussion of Neponsit Property Owners' Association v. Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank, w exploring how the case both fostered the development of common-interest communities and …

The Authentic Self And Advertising : The Effects Advertising Has On The Formation Of The Authentic Self, Lorivie Abapo Jan 2012

The Authentic Self And Advertising : The Effects Advertising Has On The Formation Of The Authentic Self, Lorivie Abapo

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In a world bombarded with advertisements, it may be difficult for the development of an authentic self. Authenticity is a mode of existence in which there is ownership in the sense of self, while at the same time being able to present this sense of self to others. To be authentic is to act and live in a way that expresses a genuine concern for the self in which projects and goals pursued. The sense of self is the feeling of genuineness of the self and representing this self requires actions that correlate to these feelings. Advertisements act as communication …

Nutrient Transport By Shrimp Hepatopancreas, Tamla A. Simmons Jan 2012

Nutrient Transport By Shrimp Hepatopancreas, Tamla A. Simmons

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Purified brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) were isolated to characterize primary cellular transport mechanisms for white shrimp. The ultimate goal is to determine the effective components of a shrimp’s diet, thereby enhancing growth, as well as nutrient content. Juvenile shrimp are dependent on plant material as a food source. Potassium is a key component of plants, thus it may play a role in nutrient transport. In addition, divalent metals have been shown to act as co-transporters in several other organisms, thus they may serve as a transport mechanism for shrimp.

Fresh, live, white or brown shrimp were obtained, and from …

Tissue Reaction Surrounding Miniscrews For Orthodontic Anchorage: An Animal Experiment, Stephanie Shih-Hsuan Chen, Hao-Hueng Chang, Yuan-Hou Chen, Yi-Ping Wang, Yunn-Jy Chen, Yi-Jane Chen, Hsiang-Hua Eddie Lai, Chung-Chen Jane Yao

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Nowadays, mini-implant anchorage is incorporated for achieving a variety of orthodontic treatment goals. However, when a miniscrew is located in the interdental area, potential root contact may lead to miniscrew mobility or even failure. Therefore, miniscrew/root contact and possible tissue responses, including root repair, were histologically investigated in the current study. Materials and methods Eight miniscrews were surgically placed in a single dog mandible. Among these, four miniscrews (experimental group) were intentionally placed in contact with a root and then retained for different time durations, three (control group) were also intentionally placed in contact with a root but …

Examination Of The Reliability And Validity Of A New Observation Measure For Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Autism Spectrum Disorder Observation For Children, Daniene Neal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

With increasing attention being drawn to autism spectrum disorders (ASD), specifically with regard to early and accurate diagnosis and treatment, researchers and clinicians alike have placed emphasis on finding assessment tools that can aid in this goal. The purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of a new observation measure for ASD, the Autism Spectrum Disorders-Observation for Children (ASD-OC). The ASD-OC was found to have good to excellent interrater reliability, and excellent internal consistency (ƒÑ = .96). As a result of these initial reliability analyses, nine items were removed from the scale. The resulting 45 item ASD-OC …

Separation And Use Of Oxygenated Byproducts From Non-Catalytically Cracked Triglycerides And Their Methyl Esters, Benjamin Travis Jones Jan 2012

Separation And Use Of Oxygenated Byproducts From Non-Catalytically Cracked Triglycerides And Their Methyl Esters, Benjamin Travis Jones

Theses and Dissertations

The world is dependent on petroleum as its main source of fuels and chemicals. Supply limitations and global warming have generated a great deal of interest in research to reduce this dependence through renewal fuels and chemicals.

Non-catalytic cracking and subsequent distillation of triacylglyceride (TAG) oils and methyl esters derived from these oils (TMEs) produces an organic liquid product (OLP) that is rich in potential fuels and chemicals. A major fraction of the OLP is made up of oxygenated compounds, either short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) if TAG oil is cracked, or short chain methyl esters (SCMEs) if TMEs are …

Pilot-Scale Evaluation Of Advanced Solvents For Co2 Capture From Coal-Fired Utilities, Brandon Michael Pavlish Jan 2012

Pilot-Scale Evaluation Of Advanced Solvents For Co2 Capture From Coal-Fired Utilities, Brandon Michael Pavlish

Theses and Dissertations

In 1992, international concern about climate change (a change to Earth's climate, especially those produced by global warming) led to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The ultimate objective of that convention was the "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that mitigates anthropogenic interference with the climate system" (1). There has been a growing concern about global climate change which scientists believe is (arguably) caused mainly by anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. The overall goal of this work was to evaluate next generation solvents at a pilot scale …

Neuroglial Mechanisms Involved In The Anti-Inflammatory Effect Of Acetate Supplementation, Mahmoud Lotfy Soliman Jan 2012

Neuroglial Mechanisms Involved In The Anti-Inflammatory Effect Of Acetate Supplementation, Mahmoud Lotfy Soliman

Theses and Dissertations

Acetate supplementation increases brain acetyl-CoA and attenuates lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation in vivo. To explain the anti-inflammatory effect of acetate treatment, we proposed that acetate treatment disrupts inflammatory signaling in microglia and astrocytes, and induces histone hyperacetylation known to be correlated with anti-inflammatory properties. To test this hypothesis, we measured the effects that LPS and acetate treatment had on histone acetylation, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), and eicosanoid signaling. A single oral dose of acetate treatment (6 g/kg) in normal animals induced a time- and site-specific pattern of histone hyperacetylation, associated with reduction of histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity …

Separation And Purification Of Aromatics From Cracked Crop Oils Using Sulfolane, Nahid Khatibi Jan 2012

Separation And Purification Of Aromatics From Cracked Crop Oils Using Sulfolane, Nahid Khatibi

Theses and Dissertations

Aromatics, such as benzene and toluene, are important for the production of many materials such as polystyrene and other polymers. Benzene and toluene are, most commonly produced from crude oil. But due to the depletion of petroleum resources, the world is looking for renewable alternatives.

Studies of the catalytic cracking of triacylglycerol containing oils (TAG), such as soybean oil, have demonstrated that a high concentration of aromatics can be produced under certain conditions. This discovery provides an opportunity to develop a pathway for the production of aromatics from renewable resources. The main focus of this research was to develop the …

Of Backyard Chickens And Front Yard Gardens: The Conflict Between Local Governments And Locavores, Sarah B. Schindler Jan 2012

Of Backyard Chickens And Front Yard Gardens: The Conflict Between Local Governments And Locavores, Sarah B. Schindler

Faculty Publications

Locavores aim to source their food locally. Many locavores are also concerned more broadly with living sustainably and decreasing reliance on industrial agriculture. As more people have joined the locavore movement, including many who reside in urban and suburban areas, conflict has emerged between the locavores’ desires to use their private property to produce food — for personal use and for sale — and municipal zoning ordinances that seek to separate agriculture from residential uses.

In this article, I consider the evolution of this conflict and its implications for our systems of land use, local government, and environmental law. Specifically, …

Environment And Sustainability In Nevada, Mark J. Salvaggio, Robert Futrell Jan 2012

Environment And Sustainability In Nevada, Mark J. Salvaggio, Robert Futrell

Social Health of Nevada Reports

When the inaugural Earth Day launched the first environmental decade in the U.S. more than forty years ago, protecting our air, water, land and other natural resources seemed a relatively straightforward task. Environmental polluters and exploiters would be brought to heel by tough laws. The U.S. and other industrialized nations responded to quality of life concerns associated with environmental degradation by adopting dozens of major environmental and resource policies and creating new institutions such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to manage environmental programs. Following these national developments, states and local communities began systematic efforts to address environmental problems.

Nonprofit Sector And Philanthropy In Nevada, Jessica K. A. Word, Shauna Davis Jan 2012

Nonprofit Sector And Philanthropy In Nevada, Jessica K. A. Word, Shauna Davis

Social Health of Nevada Reports

Many scholars and community organizers believe that nonprofit organizations embody the collective will of the community and reflect the measure of support communities provide their members (Saxton & Benson 2005). The overall strength of the nonprofit sector reflects the health of the society that nurtures these organizations (Salamon 2002; DeVita, Flemming, & Twombly 2001). Since nonprofits are vital to service delivery in the United States, by studying nonprofits practices we can better understand the nature and intensity of the social problems in a given area and the effective ways by which resources could be allocated to address those problems (Gronbjerg …

Problem Gambling And Treatment In Nevada, Bo Bernhard, Sarah St. John Jan 2012

Problem Gambling And Treatment In Nevada, Bo Bernhard, Sarah St. John

Social Health of Nevada Reports

For many years, it was moral experts, rather than medical and academic ones, who told us who gambled “too much.” Speaking from pulpits rather than podiums, church leaders informed us that gambling was uniquely subversive of the American way of life, for its something-for-nothing promise threatened to undermine the popular ethic of honest toil and gradual accumulation of goods. Samuel Hopkins, in an 1835 sermon on “The Evils of Gambling,” captured this sensibility: “Let the gambler know that he is watched, and marked; and that . . . he is loathed. Let the man who dares to furnish a resort …

Oxidative Stress And Down Syndrome: A Route Toward Alzheimer-Like Dementia, Marzia Perluigi, D. Allan Butterfield Jan 2012

Oxidative Stress And Down Syndrome: A Route Toward Alzheimer-Like Dementia, Marzia Perluigi, D. Allan Butterfield

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most frequent genetic abnormalities characterized by multiple pathological phenotypes. Indeed, currently life expectancy and quality of life for DS patients have improved, although with increasing age pathological dysfunctions are exacerbated and intellectual disability may lead to the development of Alzheimer's type dementia (AD). The neuropathology of DS is complex and includes the development of AD by middle age, altered free radical metabolism, and impaired mitochondrial function, both of which contribute to neuronal degeneration. Understanding the molecular basis that drives the development of AD is an intense field of research. Our laboratories are interested …

Assessing The Therapeutic Effect Of 630 Nm Light-Emitting Diodes Irradiation On The Recovery Of Exercise-Induced Hand Muscle Fatigue With Surface Electromyogram, Dandan Yang, Xiaoying Wu, Wensheng Hou, Xiaolin Zheng, Jun Zheng, Yingtao Jiang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper aims to investigate the effect of light emitting diode therapy (LEDT) on exercise-induced hand muscle fatigue by measuring the surface electromyography (sEMG) of flexor digitorum superficialis. Ten healthy volunteers were randomly placed in the equal sized LEDT group and control group. All subjects performed a sustained fatiguing isometric contraction with the combination of four fingertips except thumb at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) until exhaustion. The active LEDT or an identical passive rest therapy was then applied to flexor digitorum superficialis. Each subject was required to perform a re-fatigue task immediately after therapy which was the same …
