Lam: Laughing My Architecture Of, Elizabeth Straub
Lam: Laughing My Architecture Of, Elizabeth Straub
Architecture Theses and Projects
Architecture gives the perfect opportunity to join people together with humor and laughter. Through creating a space for a community of comedians to work together, this project will not only bring joy to those who come to see the acts, but also create a sense of community and home for the comedians who work and perform there.
This architecture should not only fill the needs for the program elements, but also bring a sense of wonderment and creativity to inspire those who are there. Though the building does not need to be a pun or a joke in itself, it …

Environmental Architecture: Environmental Discovery Center On The Woonasquatucket River, Nathan Bonaiuto
Architecture Theses and Projects
The Woonasquatucket River Environmental Discovery Center (WREDC) is a place where students of the environment can enjoy a natural space within their own community. It provides a much needed connection to a site which, for far too long has been off limits to the community. As a potential learning environment for young students, the WREDC becomes a platform for a sustainable lifestyle. In this place we learn about the past, connect it to the present, and allow for change in the future.
This thesis is about making these connections of past and future through the current constructs of the Social, …

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
The Neighborhood Main Streets Project is an effort to revitalize neighborhood commercial areas in Milwaukie, OR. Horizon Planning conducted the public involvement for the project with walking tours, a survey, visioning workshop, focus group, and open house to determine the community’s vision for walkable and vibrant commercial areas. Horizon Planning also examined existing zoning, transportation, and economic conditions that were not conducive to pedestrian-friendly and vibrant commercial areas. Finally, the project made recommendations to: Update zoning to allow for community-desired land uses; Change development standards to allow pedestrian-scale development; Improve transportation safety and connectivity to encourage walking and biking; and …
Influences On Diversity In Teacher Education: Using Literature To Promote Multiple Perspectives And Cultural Relevance, Karen M. Gibson
Influences On Diversity In Teacher Education: Using Literature To Promote Multiple Perspectives And Cultural Relevance, Karen M. Gibson
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
It is not uncommon for students in a teacher education program to bring with them a lack of experience in working with diverse populations. This culturally insular perspective often leaves them ill-prepared to face the highly diverse classrooms they will soon encounter. This study describes a context created for 120 students in an undergraduate Literature for Children course to critically analyze selected literature and participate in varied group discussions in order to better understand the diverse classrooms they will likely face as teachers. This qualitative study examines themes extracted from student journals and discussions in order to show the influence …

Case Study Of A Shoe-String Sotl Center, Philip T. Dunwoody, Kathryn Westcott, David Drews, Jay Hosler
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This paper provides a case study of a faculty-driven, cost-effective center focused on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at a small private liberal arts college. Prior work on teaching and learning centers has focused on large institutions. Our case study shows that a “teaching commons” (Huber & Hutchings, 2006) can be created at a small college (approximately 1600 students) with relatively little expense. Thanks to a grant from the Teagle Foundation, we were able to establish a SoTL center focused on the dissemination and production of SoTL. The center sponsors a biweekly lunch series (with 25% of the …

Flow Over A Traveling Wavy Foil With A Passively Flapping Flat Plate, Nansheng Liu, Yan Peng, Youwen Liang, Xiyun Lu
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Flow over a traveling wavy foil with a passively flapping flat plate has been investigated using a multiblock lattice Boltzmann equation and the immersed boundary method. The foil undergoes prescribed undulations in the lateral direction and the rigid flat plate has passive motion determined by the fluid structure interaction. This simplified model is used to study the effect of the fish caudal fin and its flexibility on the locomotion of swimming animals. The flexibility of the caudal fin is modeled by a torsion spring acting about the pivot at the conjuncture of the wavy foil and the flat plate. The …

Debt And Discipline: Neoliberal Political Economy And The Working Classes, Tayyab Mahmud
Debt And Discipline: Neoliberal Political Economy And The Working Classes, Tayyab Mahmud
Kentucky Law Journal
Over the last three decades, neoliberal restructuring of the economy created a symbiosis of debt and discipline. New legal regimes and strategic use of monetary policy displaced Keynesian welfare, facilitated financialization of the economy, broke the power of organized labor, and expanded debt to sustain aggregate demand. Public laws and policies created afield of possibility within which financial markets extended their reach and brought ever-increasing sections of the working classes and the marginalized within the ambit of the credit economy. Reordered public policies and new norms of personal responsibility demarcated the horizon within which the economically vulnerable pursued strategies of …

Smooth Transitions : Increasing Support For Students With Disabilities And Special Needs To Meet Their Post-Secondary Goals, Traci Lynn Alger
Smooth Transitions : Increasing Support For Students With Disabilities And Special Needs To Meet Their Post-Secondary Goals, Traci Lynn Alger
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Transitioning from high school into their adult lives can be tumultuous for students with disabilities and special needs. Graduation causes a loss of some services where necessary adult programs may be inaccessible. Through written survey and personal communication with valid local stakeholders, opinions revealed a need for better connections to local educational resources to help students and their caregivers create realistic post-secondary educational goals. The action of this project is important because there are students with disabilities unable to access services for themselves as they are required to function more independently. Each student has different needs and unique goals, requiring …

Danger In Familiarities : Sex Education And Adolescent Sexuality In The Early 20th Century, Sadie Johnson
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In this paper I focus on the affects of sex education on adolescent sexuality from 1910 until 1940. Using Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Model of Human Development, I examine how different levels of society changed sex education and the adolescent experience. I analyze texts, movies, and theories of the early 20th century to find that sex education’s had no specific affect on the adolescent experience from 1910 until 1940.

OBJECTIVE: To report our experience and to evaluate the application of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in the qualitative diagnosis of retroperitoneal space-occupying lesions. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with retroperitoneal space-occupying lesions confirmed by CT or MRI were studied. All the patients underwent endoscopic ultrasonography guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) at the Department of Gastroenterology, Xiangyang Central Hospital, Hubei Province, China from August 2009 to August 2011. Different parameters were evaluated, such as complications of EUS-FNA, the ratio of definite pathological diagnosis, and the pathologic types of all the specimens. RESULTS: Of the 26 patients, 24 had definite pathological diagnosis; the ratio of …
The Binding Properties And Functional Consequences Of Ryr2-Cam Interaction, Yi Yang
The Binding Properties And Functional Consequences Of Ryr2-Cam Interaction, Yi Yang
Dissertations
The aim of my dissertation is to understand the regulation of RyR2. The whole dissertation is composed of two parts. The first part focused on RyR2-CaM interaction. The second focused on synthetic RyR2 domain peptide (DPc10), which worked as a powerful molecular tool for RyR2 functional and structural studies.
CaM has been long identified as an important cardiac RyR regulator. Broad studies suggest CaM is a critical RyR2 stabilizer and CaM-RyR2 interaction is a critical molecular substrate for arrhythmias and HF pathogenesis, but the in situ binding properties for CaM-RyR2 are still unknown. Here we, Using FRET detection and permeabilized …
Permanence And Stability Of Placement : An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Foster And Adoptive Parent Training, Alexis Boerlage
Permanence And Stability Of Placement : An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Foster And Adoptive Parent Training, Alexis Boerlage
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Achieving permanence and stability, both emotionally and physically, is a major goal for most people. This goal begins to surface early in life within the family setting. Unfortunately, children who have been subjected to abuse and/or neglect at the hands of their caregivers may face the grave consequence of lack of permanency and instability within their family systems. This grave consequence is one that can have a negative effect on a person’s future. In order to prevent this from occurring, the Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services (DSES), Family and Children Services works to provide children, who have …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Wildlife Ordinances As A Management Tool For Reducing Human-Bear Conflicts In New Hampshire, Jaclyn Virginia Comeau
Assessing The Efficacy Of Wildlife Ordinances As A Management Tool For Reducing Human-Bear Conflicts In New Hampshire, Jaclyn Virginia Comeau
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study evaluated the effectiveness of wildlife ordinances to address human-bear conflicts in New Hampshire by assessing their ability to reduce reported conflicts, achieve public support, and reduce the availability of anthropogenic attractants, ultimately reducing conflicts. Six towns in northern New Hampshire were used to make these evaluations; 3 with ordinances (Lincoln, Franconia, and Gorham) and 3 without (Bartlett, Lancaster, and Whitefield). The number of reported human-bear conflicts were compared between pre- and post-ordinance years in ordinance towns, a mail/online survey was sent to landowners in the 6 towns to assess and compare attitudes towards bears and ordinances, and the …

Physical Activity In Childhood May Be The Key To Optimizing Lifespan Skeletal Health, Hawley C. Almstedt, Katherine B. Gunter, Kathleen F. Janz
Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works
Physical activities undertaken in childhood, particularly activities which apply large forces quickly convey optimal benefits to bone mass, size, and structure. Evidence is accumulating that benefits persist well beyond activity cessation. This review examines the potential for early childhood activity to improve bone mineralization and structure and explores childhood activity as prevention for osteoporosis in later life.
The Effect Of A Dietary Supplement (N-Oleyl-Phosphatidyl-Ethanolamine And Epigallocatechin Gallate) On Dietary Compliance And Body Fat Loss In Adults Who Are Overweight: A Double-Blind, Randomized Control Trial, William Mccormack
Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works
Background: A dietary supplement containing a blend of 170mg of N-oleyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (NOPE) and 100mg of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been shown to improve compliance to low caloric diets. Considering the cost of dietary ingredients, many manufacturers attempt to determine the lowest efficacious dose. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 8-weeks of supplementation with a daily intake of 120mg of NOPE and 105mg of EGCG in conjunction with a low caloric diet and regular, moderate exercise on dietary compliance in healthy, overweight adults. An additional purpose was to examine the effect of this supplement/diet/exercise paradigm on …

How Well Do The Nsf Funded Elementary Mathematics Curricula Align With The Gaise Report Recommendations?, Anna E. Bargagliotti
Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works
Statistics and probability have become an integral part of mathematics education. Therefore it is important to understand whether curricular materials adequately represent statistical ideas. The Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) report (Franklin, Kader, Mewborn, Moreno, Peck, Perry, & Scheaffer, 2007), endorsed by the American Statistical Association, provides a two-dimensional (process and level) framework for statistical learning. This paper examines whether the statistics content contained in the NSF funded elementary curricula Investigations in Number, Data, and Space, Math Trailblazers, and Everyday Mathematics aligns with the GAISE recommendations. Results indicate that there are differences in the approaches used …
