Factors Influencing Survival Of Desert Mule Deer In The Greater San Andres Mountains, New Mexico, Louis C. Bender, Brock D. Hoenes, Cristina L. Rodden
Factors Influencing Survival Of Desert Mule Deer In The Greater San Andres Mountains, New Mexico, Louis C. Bender, Brock D. Hoenes, Cristina L. Rodden
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Mule deer numbers have declined precipitously in the San Andres Mountains of southcentral New Mexico. To assess reasons for population declines, we monitored condition, survival, and causes of mortality for a range of 37 to 64 radio-collared, >1.5-year-old female mule deer annually, and a range of 14 to 31 radio-collared, >1.5-year-old male mule deer annually from 2003 to 2009, and modeled environmental factors affecting survival. We found annual survival rates of 0.74 to 0.86 for females and 0.74 to 0.92 for males, rates that were similar among years within sexes. Causes of mortality for 50 radio-collared females and 22 radio-collared …
Bird Consumption Of Sweet And Tart Cherries, Catherine A. Lindell, Rachael A. Eaton, Erin M. Lizotte, Nikki L. Rothwell
Bird Consumption Of Sweet And Tart Cherries, Catherine A. Lindell, Rachael A. Eaton, Erin M. Lizotte, Nikki L. Rothwell
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Identifying species responsible for crop damage is an important first step in developing management strategies. Previous studies have surveyed bird species flying through cherry orchards but have not documented which species were consuming cherries. We conducted traditional surveys and behavioral observations in orchards of sweet cherries (Prunus avium) and tart cherries (Prunus cerasus) in Michigan during 2010 to compare results from the 2 techniques. American robins (Turdus migratorius) were detected most frequently during sweet cherry surveys, while behavioral observations showed that cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) consumed more sweet cherries than did robins. …
The Effect Of European Starlings And Ambient Air Temperature On Salmonella Enterica Contamination Within Cattle Feed Bunks, James C. Carlson, Jeremy W. Ellis, Shelagh K. Tupper, Alan B. Franklin, George M. Linz
The Effect Of European Starlings And Ambient Air Temperature On Salmonella Enterica Contamination Within Cattle Feed Bunks, James C. Carlson, Jeremy W. Ellis, Shelagh K. Tupper, Alan B. Franklin, George M. Linz
Human–Wildlife Interactions
European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are a known risk factor for the occurrence of microorganisms that are pathogenic to cattle and humans in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Starling use of CAFOs is known to vary in response to weather; starling control operations on CAFOs often are timed to coincide with favorable environmental conditions to maximize take. The totality of this information suggests that disease risks in CAFOs associated with starlings may be influenced by environmental factors, such as temperature. In this study, we assessed the risk of Salmonella enterica contamination of cattle feed by modeling the interaction between …
Modification Of Net Configurations Of The Coda Netlauncher® To Enhance Bird Capture, Amanda M. Prisock, Brian S. Dorr, James C. Cumbee
Modification Of Net Configurations Of The Coda Netlauncher® To Enhance Bird Capture, Amanda M. Prisock, Brian S. Dorr, James C. Cumbee
Human–Wildlife Interactions
We modified and evaluated capture nets fired from the Coda Netlauncher® as a tool for capturing various avian species. We modified the netlauncher by using customized nets to maximize the area of the capture zone. We captured 137 birds, comprising 12 species, in 23 attempts between July 2008 and October 2009 using this method. Capture success rates varied from 25 to 69% were comparable to success rates reported for other capture methods for these species. However, individual capture success for different net configurations varied greatly from 3 to 65%. Minimal injuries and 2 bird fatalities were reported. The netlauncher, using …
An Investigation Into The Use Of Road Drainage Structures By Wildlife In Maryland, Usa, James L. Sparks Jr., J. Edward Gates
An Investigation Into The Use Of Road Drainage Structures By Wildlife In Maryland, Usa, James L. Sparks Jr., J. Edward Gates
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Culverts have been installed beneath roadways for drainage or to contain existing streams; however, most of them have not been installed to facilitate the passage of wildlife. Prior studies of existing drainage structures used by wildlife have been narrow in scope, targeting a restricted number of culverts, time periods, or locales. Use of culverts by wildlife has been postulated to promote connectivity of fragmented populations and their habitats and to reduce roadkills. We monitored 265 culverts located throughout Maryland, USA, with game cameras in all seasons and in every physiographic province. Our objectives were to identify those species using culverts …
Plume Dispersion Modeling Of Chlorine Gas Released Due To Ballistic Attack On Chlorine-Carrying Railway Tanker, Anna Claire Chapman
Plume Dispersion Modeling Of Chlorine Gas Released Due To Ballistic Attack On Chlorine-Carrying Railway Tanker, Anna Claire Chapman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hazardous dense gases such as chlorine are often transported throughout the United States in their liquid form in pressurized railway tankers. These tankers can hold up to 90 tons of liquid chlorine. A high-powered, ballistic attack on a chlorine-carrying tanker could cause devastating outcomes for the surrounding population and environment. This particular terrorist attack was modeled and analyzed by varying a large number of weather parameters and by varying terrain in order to provide specific concentration data at different distances from the source. Data was compiled to provide first responders with a reliable reference for such an emergency so that …
Pregnancy As 'Disability' And The Amended Americans With Disabilities Act, Jeannette Cox
Pregnancy As 'Disability' And The Amended Americans With Disabilities Act, Jeannette Cox
School of Law Faculty Publications
The recent expansion of the Americans with Disabilities Act’s (ADA) protected class invites reexamination of the assumption that pregnant workers may not use the ADA to obtain workplace accommodations. The ADA’s scope now includes persons with minor temporary physical limitations comparable to pregnancy’s physical effects. Accordingly, the primary remaining justification for concluding that pregnant workers may not obtain ADA accommodations is that pregnancy is a physically healthy condition rather than a physiological defect. Drawing on the social model of disability, this Article challenges the assumption that medical diagnosis of “defect” must be a prerequisite to disability accommodation eligibility. The social …
Expanding The Federal Common Law?: From Nomos & Physis And Beyond, Sam Kalen
Expanding The Federal Common Law?: From Nomos & Physis And Beyond, Sam Kalen
Marquette Law Review
The Supreme Court’s decision in AEP v. Connecticut, as well as litigation involving the threat posed by Asian Carp, reflect an emerging trend of testing the federal judiciary’s willingness to expand the federal common law to include claims for interstate environmental threats. There is an assumption, including by the Supreme Court, that a federal common law for public nuisance exists, and that the pressing question is whether to expand that common law. This article challenges that assumption. The article illustrates that the widely shared view about the persistence of a federal common law for interstate pollution overlooks the Supreme Court’s …

Ecocriticism And Christian Literary Scholarship, Timothy J. Burbery
Ecocriticism And Christian Literary Scholarship, Timothy J. Burbery
English Faculty Research
This essay presents a case for ecocriticism as a viable critical method for Christian scholars. It begins with an historical overview of the method, then examines common ground shared by ecocriticism and Christianity, including what amounts to a kind of critical realism, and the belief in the inherent goodness of creation. Two potential obstacles are then addressed by way of Lynn White, Jr.'s famous essay, "The Historical Roots of our Ecologic Crisis." These include the relationship of the Bible and the environment, and the charge of anthropocentrism. I believe White is partly right, but contend that neither objection is fatal …

The researcher identifies four main research themes investigated in the …
Subalternative Cognitive Mapping In Rohinton Mistry’S A Fine Balance, Puspa Damai
Subalternative Cognitive Mapping In Rohinton Mistry’S A Fine Balance, Puspa Damai
English Faculty Research
In this essay I read Mistry's A Fine Balance in the context of theories of Emergency, exception, cognitive mapping, and city studies. After briefly contrasting Benjamin's and Agamben's theorizing of life under the state of exception, I examine Mistry's depiction of life during the Emergency rule in India in the context of Jameson's concept of cognitive mapping, which, I argue, needs to be expanded not only by engaging with theories of the exception but also by expanding it to include a number of totalizing maps that constitute the camp-like landscape of Mistry' s novel.
Retention Of Canopy Trees As Biological Legacies For Balancing Woody Biomass Production And Biodiversity In Managed Aspen Forests Of The Great Lakes Region, Amber M. Roth
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Green-tree retention under the conceptual framework of ecological forestry has the potential to provide both biomass feedstock for industry and maintain quality wildlife habitat. I examined the effects of retained canopy trees as biological legacies (“legacy trees”) in aspen (Populus spp.) forests on above-ground live woody biomass, understory plant floristic quality, and bird diversity. Additionally, I evaluated habitat quality for a high conservation priority species, the Golden-winged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera). I selected 27 aspen-dominated forest stands in northern Wisconsin with nine stands in each of three legacy tree retention treatments (conifer retention, hardwood retention, and clearcuts or …
Habitat Associations Of The Golden-Winged Warbler In Honduras, Ruth E. Bennett
Habitat Associations Of The Golden-Winged Warbler In Honduras, Ruth E. Bennett
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The global population of the Neotropical migrant Golden-winged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) has declined steadily over the past fifty years. While factors influencing this decline have been well researched on the breeding grounds, little is known about the distribution and habitat requirements of this warbler on its stationary non-breeding range. Recent efforts to quantify the non-breeding habitat requirements of this warbler have focused on Colombia and Costa Rica, though the species ranges as far north as the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. To address the gap in knowledge from the northern portion of the non-breeding range, I conducted 80 serial point-count …
Inhibition Of L-Type Amino Acid Transport With Non-Physiological Amino Acids In The Pahenu2 Mouse Model Of Phenylketonuria, Kara R. Vogel
Inhibition Of L-Type Amino Acid Transport With Non-Physiological Amino Acids In The Pahenu2 Mouse Model Of Phenylketonuria, Kara R. Vogel
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Phenylketonuria, an autosomal recessive Mendelian disorder, is one of the most common inborn errors of metabolism. Although currently treated by diet, many suboptimal outcomes occur for patients. Neuropathological outcomes include cognitive loss, white matter abnormalities, and hypo- or demyelination, resulting from high concentrations and/or fluctuating levels of phenylalanine. High phenylalanine can also result in competitive exclusion of other large neutral amino acids from the brain, including tyrosine and tryptophan (essential precursors of dopamine and serotonin). This competition occurs at the blood brain barrier, where the L-type amino acid transporter, LAT1, selectively facilitates entry of large neutral amino acids. The hypothesis …
Advanced Nanostructured Electro-Catalysts For Electricity Generation And Biorenewable Alcohol Conversion, Zhiyong Zhang
Advanced Nanostructured Electro-Catalysts For Electricity Generation And Biorenewable Alcohol Conversion, Zhiyong Zhang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
In my Ph.D research, a wet chemistry-based organic solution phase reduction method was developed, and was successfully applied in the preparation of a series of advanced electro-catalysts, including 0-dimensional (0-D) Pt, Pd, Au, and Pd-Ni nanoparticles (NPs), 1-D Pt-Fe nanowires (NWs) and 2-D Pd-Fe nanoleaves (NLs), with controlled size, shape, and morphology. These nanostructured catalysts have demonstrated unique electro-catalytic functions towards electricity production and biorenewable alcohol conversion.
The molecular oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a long-standing scientific issue for fuel cells due to its sluggish kinetics and the poor catalyst durability. The activity and durability of an electro-catalyst is strongly …
Sleep Deprivation And Pain Intensity, Robert Arnold Larson
Sleep Deprivation And Pain Intensity, Robert Arnold Larson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Little or poor quality sleep is often reported in patients suffering from acute or chronic pain. Conversely, sleep loss has been known to elevate pain perception; thus a potential bi-direction relationship exists between sleep deprivation and pain. The effect of sleep deprivation on the thermal pain intensity has yet to be determined, furthermore, sex differences in pain have not been examined following sleep deprivation. There is also a higher prevalence of insomnia in women, and reports indicate that sleep quality is diminished and pain sensitivity may be greater during high hormone phases of the menstrual cycle. In Study 1 we …

Predator-Prey: Interactions Between The Spiny Waterflea (Bythotrephes Longimanus) And Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Lepomis Gibbosus), Jaime F. Leduc
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Small pumpkinseed sunfish ( Lepomis gibbosus), were found to be capable of removing the spine of Bythotrephes longimanus, an invasive cladoceran. Because fish consumption may be important in the dispersal or control of Bythotrephes, aquarium feeding experiments were conducted to 1) establish if the spine removal behavior of the pumpkinseeds was locally unique; 2) quantify how frequently pumpkinseeds exhibit the behavior; 3) determine if pumpkinseed handle Bythotrephes more quickly than other species of fish; and 4) verify if Bythotrephes' resting eggs pass through the digestive systems of pumpkinseeds in viable condition. The experiments revealed that pumpkinseeds (45-70 mm TL) from …

Effects Of Chemical Deicers On Amphibian Communites, Meagan Leigh Harless
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Roads and highways present a unique challenge to wildlife as they exhibit substantial impacts on the surrounding ecosystem through the interruption of a number of ecological processes. With new roads added to the national highway system every year, an understanding of these impacts is required for effective mitigation of potential environmental impacts. A major contributor to these negative effects is the deposition of chemicals used in winter deicing activities to nearby surface waters. These chemicals often vary in composition and may affect freshwater species differently. The negative impacts of widespread deposition of sodium chloride (NaCl) have prompted a search for …

Information Integration And Management Through The Design And Construction Phases Of A Project Life Cycle, Christopher T. Brokaw
Information Integration And Management Through The Design And Construction Phases Of A Project Life Cycle, Christopher T. Brokaw
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Information management is a key aspect of successful construction projects. Having inaccurate measurements and conflicting data can lead to costly mistakes, and vague quantities can ruin estimates and schedules. Building information modeling (BIM) augments a 3D model with a wide variety of information, which reduces many sources of error and can detect conflicts before they occur. Because new technology is often more complex, it can be difficult to effectively integrate it with existing business practices.
In this paper, we will answer two questions: How can BIM add value to construction projects? and What lessons can be learned from other companies …

Upgrading An Intermittent & Branched Water Network To A Continuous & Looped Network: A Case Study In Coastal Peru, Jennifer A. O'Neill
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
This case study sought to determine how the potable water network of Cerro Prieto, Peru could be improved. The network as it exists now is branched and operated intermittently, exposing residents to water contamination risks and inconvenience. Using EPANET, it was found that the as-built network can support continuous water service, all points could stay over 10 psi, and the current water consumption rate could be maintained. To keep all points over 20 psi, the height of elevated water tank must be increased 6 feet, and the pump switched on whenever the tank drains. It was also found that almost …
Preformulation Characterization And Formulation Development Of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Prodrugs For Potential Treatment Of Glacuoma, Tushar Hingorani
Preformulation Characterization And Formulation Development Of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Prodrugs For Potential Treatment Of Glacuoma, Tushar Hingorani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Relationship between smoking marihuana and a drop in intraocular pressure (IOP) was first reported in 1971. Research efforts since then have identified a number of constituents that could be linked to this observation. Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was one of the ingredients identified. However, four decades and numerous research efforts since the first observation, it has still not been concluded whether THC is effective in the treatment of glaucoma or not. Current therapy for IOP control in glaucoma, though effective, cannot prevent vision loss completely. Thus, identification of agents that can lower IOP as well as protect the retinal ganglion cells from …
Design And Development Of Drug Delivery Systems For Immediate And Sustained Release Utilizing Hot Melt Extrusion, Abhilasha Singh
Design And Development Of Drug Delivery Systems For Immediate And Sustained Release Utilizing Hot Melt Extrusion, Abhilasha Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polymers have indispensable role in pharmaceutical formulation development. Polymer choice is a critical factor to obtain the desired drug-release profile during formulation development for HME (Hot melt extrusion). Many commercially available, pharmaceutical-grade polymers can be used in HME formulations. The suitable polymer choice facilitates processing in the extruder. When choosing a polymer to use in a formulation, processing conditions and processing attributes of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) should be considered. The physicochemical and the mechanisms of drug release from drug delivery systems prepared by utilizing HME with various polymeric carriers were investigated. Amorphous forms of API can have as …

Antimalarials From Plant Pathogenic Fungi, Mallika Kumarihamy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to discover antimalarial compounds from necrotropic plant pathogenic fungi. Various phytotoxins released by necrotropic plant pathogenic fungi may inhibit the plant-like metabolic pathways in the apicoplast, a chloroplast-like organelle, essential for the survival of apicomplexan parasites, such as Plasmodium which cause malaria in humans. This dissertation describes the isolation, characterization, and biological evaluation of secondary metabolites of eight fungal strains. In addition to the antiplasmodial assay, all the extracts were subjected to phytotoxic, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic bioassays. Isolation of metabolites was performed by chromatographic methods and identification was carried out by spectroscopic and spectrometric …
