The earth is currently experiencing a change in its climate which in some areas is resulting in warmer ambient temperatures. Globally the frequency and severity of heat waves have increased over the last few decades leading to an associated increase in the burden of morbidity and mortality associated with heat waves. Global temperatures are predicted to rise even further in the foreseeable future....

Ginger And Osteoarthritis, Tessa Therkleson Jan 2012

Ginger And Osteoarthritis, Tessa Therkleson

Research outputs 2012

Ginger has been used for 1000s of years as a food and medicine; it is likely one of the most ancient remedies valued by humans. Ancient Indian and Chinese cultures reportedly used ginger for a wide variety of conditions and modern day research has found it effective as an anti-emetic and anti-inflammatory agent, when taken internally. Random controlled trials using ginger extract have been found effective in relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the primary cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability in Western cultures. Current management is primarily through the use of anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication, with cortisone injections and …

Authentic Digital Representation Of Creative Works For Assessment, Christopher Newhouse Jan 2012

Authentic Digital Representation Of Creative Works For Assessment, Christopher Newhouse

Research outputs 2012

This paper reports on the first stage of a three-year project to investigate the representation of student portfolios in digital forms for the purpose of summative assessment. In a number of senior secondary courses in Western Australia, such as Visual Arts and Design, students submit a physical portfolio for summative assessment that takes various forms dependent on the chosen context. The collection and judging/marking of these portfolios has increasingly been considered to be problematic by assessors, teachers and probably many students. While it should be feasible to digitize these portfolios and apply a similar method of marking, the digitization process …

To See The World Clearly: - Painting, The Camera Obscura And The Lens Of Spinoza, Paul Uhlmann Jan 2012

To See The World Clearly: - Painting, The Camera Obscura And The Lens Of Spinoza, Paul Uhlmann

Research outputs 2012

My practice-led PhD research project seeks to find ways to create immersive painting installations to invoke contemplation of immanence, interconnectedness and impermanence in the mind of the viewer. In this paper I will discuss the methodology of my practice-led research as it relates to the concept of sensation (Deleuze) in relation to the body and to painting. In addition to this I will outline ways in which Spinoza’s monist concept of ‘one substance’ has illuminated and influenced my thinking and work. Central to this concept is the notion that mind and matter are not two separate things but one thing. …

The Nutritional Regulation Of Hepatic Fibroblast Growth Factor 21: A Novel Anti-Diabetic Hormone., Holly Ann Cyphert Jan 2012

The Nutritional Regulation Of Hepatic Fibroblast Growth Factor 21: A Novel Anti-Diabetic Hormone., Holly Ann Cyphert

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous studies have shown that fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is partially regulated by the activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) following starvation or the consumption of a high fat, low carbohydrate (HF-LC) ketogenic diet. To understand the nutritional regulation of FGF21, I employed the use of primary rat hepatocytes and screened for factors that could potentially mediate the nutritional regulation of FGF21 mRNA and protein secretion. In preliminary experiments, I discovered that bile acids enhance FGF21 mRNA expression and protein secretion. Bile acids are known ligands for the farnesoid X receptor, a nuclear receptor. Activation of FXR by …

Effects Of Exotic Morrow's Honeysuckle (Lonicera Morrowii) On Migratory Songbirds., Holly Merredith Mcchesney Jan 2012

Effects Of Exotic Morrow's Honeysuckle (Lonicera Morrowii) On Migratory Songbirds., Holly Merredith Mcchesney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In much of the eastern United States, bush honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.) threaten the integrity of old-fields used as songbird habitat. From 2007–2009, we studied old-field systems in two areas of southwestern Pennsylvania: Fort Necessity National Battlefield and Ohiopyle State Park. Old fields at Fort Necessity consisted of a dense cover of Morrow’s honeysuckle (Lonicera morrowii), whereas those at Ohiopyle were relatively free of this shrub species. We captured birds in mist nets during the breeding and post-breeding seasons to assess species composition at both locations and found that the species composition of breeding birds was correlated with the presence of …

Assessment Of Pulmonary Fibrogenic Potential Of Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Vitro., Anurag Mishra Jan 2012

Assessment Of Pulmonary Fibrogenic Potential Of Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Vitro., Anurag Mishra

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) have many applications due to their unique mechanical and electrical properties. However, these fiber shaped materials have been shown to possess unusual fibrogenic activity in vivo and are currently the focus of intense toxicological investigations. To date very few detailed mechanistic studies on the fibrogenic activity of CNT have been reported. The aim of this series of studies is to determine fibrogenic potential of well dispersed MWCNT in human lung cell culture models and develop a novel platform for understanding the cellular mechanisms of MWCNT-induced lung fibrosis. Dispersion of large agglomerates of MWCNT in suspension to …

Cognitive Training With Healthy Older Adults: Investigating The Effectiveness Of The Brain Age Software For Nintendo Ds, Shaun Michael English

Dissertations (1934 -)

An increasing number of empirical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of cognitive training (CT) with healthy, cognitively intact older adults. Less is known regarding the effectiveness of commercially available “brain training” programs. The current study investigated the impact of daily CT presented via the Brain Age® software for Nintendo DS on neurocognitive abilities in a sample of healthy, community-dwelling older adults. Over the six-week study, participants in the CT group completed training activities and were compared to an active control group who played card games on the Nintendo DS. At pre-test and post-test, a wide range of empirically validated neuropsychological …

Yves Congar, O.P.: Ecumenist Of The Twentieth Century, Paul Raymond Caldwell Jan 2012

Yves Congar, O.P.: Ecumenist Of The Twentieth Century, Paul Raymond Caldwell

Dissertations (1934 -)

While the name "Yves Congar" is recognizable by theologians and others there is a gap between recognition and familiarity: awareness that there was an Yves Congar is distinguished from knowing what he stood for and what he did. Eight years before Vatican II Congar was so distrusted by the Church that he was "distanced" from France for almost two years. Yet, several years after Vatican II he was elevated from priest to Cardinal in one day.

Congar's nouvelle théologie of ecumenism and unity, ressourcement and reform, changed the face of the Church to the world. In this, Congar had an …

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This paper describes a pilot study of collegial coaching for technology integration at two private Christian schools. Two students nearing completion of a Master’s in Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Instructional Technology each coached three fellow teachers, self-described as digital immigrants, to integrate technology into their teaching. The coaches spent an average of 15 hours per teacher brainstorming, teaching, and facilitating technology integration. Information obtained from a variety of data sources (interviews, a post-coaching questionnaire, a focus group, and analyses of journals kept by both coaches and coached teachers) revealed the positive effects of their collegial …

Desperate Not To "Forget The Gods": Mormon Fantasy And The Epic Poem, Gerrit Van Dyk Jan 2012

Desperate Not To "Forget The Gods": Mormon Fantasy And The Epic Poem, Gerrit Van Dyk

Faculty Publications

Because of humanity's fixation on death, religion and the afterlife have played a part in human culture throughout history. As a result, belief, religion, and theology have been central to the main action of stories since the earliest forms of literature. One of the greatest ancient literary genres, the epic, is no exception.

Epics have many universal characteristics, such as elevated language in poetic form, vast settings, and strong protagonists who demonstrate feats of great strength and genius. They also commonly contain "supernatural forces-gods, angels, and demons-[who] interest themselves in the action" (Harmon and Holman 185). After the Renaissance, the …

Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) Responses To Visitors Using Chimpanzee-Friendly Behaviors, Daniella Bismanovsky Jan 2012

Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) Responses To Visitors Using Chimpanzee-Friendly Behaviors, Daniella Bismanovsky

All Master's Theses

Many studies suggest that zoo visitors are a cause of stress among animals; among primates, visitor presence can lead to an increase in aggressive displays, time spent non-visible to the public, and a decrease in overall activity. This study tested the effectiveness of using species-specific behaviors among a group of captive chimpanzees. There were 2 conditions: a control, and an experimental condition in which visitors were asked to adopt a stooped posture or lean on the railing, and show a chimpanzee play face. The visitors stooped their posture, sat, and leaned on the railing significantly more in the experimental condition …

The Identification And Historic Context Of Mining Archaeology Of The Wenatchee Mountains Within The Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Jared Valenta

All Master's Theses

A historically important metal mining region within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of the Wenatchee Mountains was studied employing archival research and systematic pedestrian archaeological survey. The objective of the study was to provide a historical context for hardrock mining activities within the study area and vicinity and document any new historic archaeological sites within the study area. The results serve the scientific, scholarly, and general public by providing both a more complete archaeological record and aid in the formulation of land use policy within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Three loci of activity containing a total of 27 features with associated …

Clothed With Salvation: The Garden, The Veil, Tabitha, And Christ, Dan Belnap, Daniel Belnap Jan 2012

Clothed With Salvation: The Garden, The Veil, Tabitha, And Christ, Dan Belnap, Daniel Belnap

Faculty Publications

Sandwiched between the account of Saul’s conversion in Acts 9 and Peter’s vision of the Gentiles in Acts 10 is the story of the raising of Tabitha. While staying in the town of Lydda, Peter, the presiding disciple of Christ, is approached by two individuals from the neighboring city of Joppa with the request that he come and attend to the then-deceased Tabitha. When he gets there, he is met by widows weeping and wailing over Tabitha’s departure. We know practically nothing of Tabitha except that she is a believer and a woman “full of good works and almsdeeds” (Acts …

Seeking Status: Low Socioeconomic Status Pattering At Mont Repose Plantation, Jasper County, South Carolina, Marsha Katherine Welch Jan 2012

Seeking Status: Low Socioeconomic Status Pattering At Mont Repose Plantation, Jasper County, South Carolina, Marsha Katherine Welch

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Throughout the last 12 years, research and excavations have been ongoing at Mont Repose Plantation in Coosawhatchie, South Carolina. Previous research hasfocused on two areas of the plantation, while other areas have been excavated, yet left unstudied. One of the areas needing more study is the N870 block, first opened during the 2000 field season, and hypothesized to include a slave cabin. In order to investigate this claim the present researcher directed an extension of the N870 block during the 2011 field season to assess the area and determine if it was, in fact, a slave cabin. By conducting a …

Challenging The Habeas Process Rather Than The Result, Justin F. Marceau Jan 2012

Challenging The Habeas Process Rather Than The Result, Justin F. Marceau

Washington and Lee Law Review

Habeas scholarship has repeatedly assessed whether the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act’s (AEDPA’s) limitations on federal habeas relief were as severe in practice as they appeared to be on paper. By analyzing recent doctrinal shifts—particularly focusing on two Supreme Court decisions from this Term—and substantial new empirical data, this Article acknowledges that AEDPA’s bite has reached substantial proportions, in many ways exceeding the initial concerns and hype surrounding the legislation. More importantly, after acknowledging that federal habeas relief from state court convictions has become “microscopically” rare, this Article considers what the rarity of relief ought to mean as a …

Predictors Of A Differential Neural Response To Infant Cues In Substance Using And Non-Using Mothers, Marjorie-Anne Guerra Jan 2012

Predictors Of A Differential Neural Response To Infant Cues In Substance Using And Non-Using Mothers, Marjorie-Anne Guerra

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Substance use during pregnancy and the postpartum period impacts not only the substance using mother, but also her infant by affecting the mother's ability to provide care during this critical time period. Current research demonstrates the neural circuitry of the reward and stress systems important in parenting overlaps with the circuitry dysregulated in addictive processes, which may compromise a mother's ability to respond appropriately to infant cues. In the initial study, parental sensitivity to infant cues was examined in substance using and non-using mothers. Participants viewed images of infant faces while simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) recorded their neural responses. EEG data …

Congressional Inquiry And The Federal Criminal Law, J. Richard Broughton Jan 2012

Congressional Inquiry And The Federal Criminal Law, J. Richard Broughton

University of Richmond Law Review

This article supports constraint of the modern federal criminal law regime through greater attention to, and use of, congressional investigation and over =sight powers. Through an analysis of the 2009 and 2010 United States House of Representatives hearings on over-criminalization, this article asserts that Congress has political and constitutional incentives to use its investigation and oversight powers to address these problems. Conventional wisdom asserts that political disincentives to reduce the federal criminal law regime and weaknesses in investigative and oversight powers limit congressional effectiveness.

Jailing The Johns: The Issue Of Demand In Sex Trafficking, Cheryl Page Jan 2012

Jailing The Johns: The Issue Of Demand In Sex Trafficking, Cheryl Page

Journal Publications

Slavery is an institution that many people believe no longer exists. Slavery has not ended and there are millions of innocent victims caught in this system. This is not the slavery that was fought over in the U.S. Civil War. This form of slavery is not very different from colonial slavery-innocent people caught and trapped in this web of sex for service. Today, this form of slavery is better known as human trafficking. This is a brutal, heinous, and damaging situation that many women and children find themselves in as unwilling participants.' Most victims have little to no hope of …

Civil Rights And Education In Richmond, Va: A Documentary Theater Project, Laura Browder, Patricia Herrera Jan 2012

Civil Rights And Education In Richmond, Va: A Documentary Theater Project, Laura Browder, Patricia Herrera

English Faculty Publications

Our goal was to have students spend fifteen weeks reading primary and secondary sources on the history of "massive resistance" to segregation, conducting archival research and oral history interviews, and studying examples of documentary dramas. They would then collaboratively write and produce a play based on that research. The first month of the semester focused on familiarization with the history of desegregation, integration, and resegregation in Richmond. We began with viewing The Ground Beneath Our Feet: Massive Resistance, and reading Robert A. Pratt's The Color of Their Skin: Education and Race in Richmond Virginia 1954-89 to provide a basic history …

Promoting Mitochondrial Biogenesis With The Sirti Activator Srt1720 To Improve Mitochondrial And Renal Function After Acute Kidney Injury, Jason Allen Funk Jan 2012

Promoting Mitochondrial Biogenesis With The Sirti Activator Srt1720 To Improve Mitochondrial And Renal Function After Acute Kidney Injury, Jason Allen Funk

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a primary pathological consequence of acute kidney injury (AKI). Induction of mitochondrial biogenesis via the nuclear coactivator of transcription PPARγ-coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, rescues mitochondrial function in renal cells after oxidant injury. The primary goal of this project was to evaluate the recovery of mitochondrial function after in vivo AKI, and to determine the influence of mitochondrial biogenesis during the repair process. Deacetylation of PGC-1α by the class III HDAC SIRT1 produces a more active form of the protein and stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis. The potent SIRT1 activator SRT1720 induced deacetylation of PGC-1α, increased …
