Characterization Of Maize Sex-Determination Gene Orthologs In Rice (Oryza Sativa L. Japonica Cv. Nipponbare), John Ventura
Characterization Of Maize Sex-Determination Gene Orthologs In Rice (Oryza Sativa L. Japonica Cv. Nipponbare), John Ventura
Open Access Master's Theses
Ensuring food security will be a crucial problem in the coming decades. Heterosis, the phenomenon where hybrid progeny exhibit increased vigor in comparison to their inbred parents, has been exploited to increase agricultural yield in maize (Zea mays) for decades due to its monoecious reproductive state. Unisexuality in maize is genetically controlled due to the concerted action of the Tassel seed1 (ts1), Tassel seed2 (ts2), and Silkless1 (sk1) genes. Orthologs of the Tassel seed genes and sk1 can be found in the rice genome even though rice maintains an ancestral cosexual floral …

Status, Dispersal, And Breeding Biology Of The Exotic Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia Decaocto) In Arkansas, J. M. Fielder, R. Kannan, D. A. James, J. Cunningham
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The exotic Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) was first sighted in Arkansas at Harrison (Boone Co.) on 25 June 1989. Since this initial sighting the species has grown in numbers and is now present in 42 of 75 counties across the state. In the spring and summer of 2009 and 2010, 20 nests were observed in the urban areas of Fort Smith (Sebastian County). Fifteen of the 20 nests (75%) were located on human-made structures of which 13 (65%) were on an electrical substation and two (10%) were on utility poles. The remaining 5 nests (25%) were in trees. Mean nest …

Establishing Baseline Nutrient And Sediment Input In The Lower Cache River Watershed, Ar, A. M. Gilmer, C. A. Rosado-Berrios, J. L. Bouldin
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Contaminants in waterways continue to be a problem especially in watersheds dominated by land use changes such as agriculture. Clearing the land for agricultural use is needed to support the population; however, agricultural contaminants are cited as contributing the greatest input of suspended solids and nutrients to waterways. Quantifying various contaminants in surface water is useful in determining their origin, thus aiding in their mitigation. This study, focused on the Cache River Watershed, reports pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), NO3 - , NO2 - , and PO4 3- in the lower sub watersheds. It was …
Retrospective Epidemiologic Analysis Of Influenza Pandemics In Arkansas, A, A. J. Gray, D. Nguyen, B. M. Rowley
Retrospective Epidemiologic Analysis Of Influenza Pandemics In Arkansas, A, A. J. Gray, D. Nguyen, B. M. Rowley
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
This study compares influenza mortality in Arkansas during the pandemics of: 1918 (aka Spanish flu), 1957, 1968, and 2009 (H1N1, aka Swine flu). Death certificate and U.S. census data were gathered and analyzed for statistical differences in mortalities based on sex, age, and geographic regions of Arkansas for each pandemic. The geographic regions were defined by the five Public Health Units classified by the Arkansas Department of Health. Regional mortalities were also analyzed across all pandemics to investigate how the different pandemics affected each individual region. Chi-square analyses for each pandemic showed only the 1918 pandemic had statistical differences between …

Comparing Methods For Interpolation To Improve Raster Digital Elevation Models, J. C. Guarneri, R. C. Weih Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Digital elevation models (DEMs) are available as raster files at 100m, 30m, and 10m resolutions for the contiguous United States and are used in a variety of geographic analyses. Some projects may require a finer resolution. GIS software offers many options for interpolating data to higher resolutions. We compared ten interpolation methods using 10m sample data from the Ouachita Mountains in central Arkansas. We interpolated the 10m DEM to 5m, 2.5m, and 1m resolutions and compared the absolute mean difference (AMD) for each using surveyed control points. Overall, there was little difference in the accuracy between interpolation methods at the …

Distribution, Life History Aspects, And Conservation Status Of The Spothanded Crayfish, Orconectes (Procericambarus) Punctimanus (Creaser) (Decapoda: Cambaridae), In Arkansas, C. T. Mcallister, H. W. Robison
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The spothanded crayfish, Orconectes (Procericambarus) punctimanus (Creaser), is an endemic crayfish of the Interior Highlands (Ozark Plateau) of Arkansas and Missouri. Fieldwork within the Arkansas portion of its overall distribution from 1999–2012 and a search of museum and literature records revealed a state distribution of 11 counties in northern Arkansas. Eighty-two collections of this crayfish were made from the White River system in 9 counties, including Baxter, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Lawrence, Marion, Randolph, Sharp, and Stone. Two additional counties, Clay and Searcy, are also added to the distribution of O. punctimanus from museum and literature records. This crayfish inhabits areas …
Effects Of Drosophila Ribosomal Protein S6 Kinase On Wing Growth, M. J. Stewart, J. L. Hunt
Effects Of Drosophila Ribosomal Protein S6 Kinase On Wing Growth, M. J. Stewart, J. L. Hunt
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
In multicellular animals, organ size, cell size and total organism size are regulated by signaling through the insulin receptor and TOR signaling pathways. The ribosomal protein S6 kinase is a key component of these pathways. It has been shown that mice or Drosophila lacking this kinase have a reduced body size that is associated with a decrease in cell size. Ectopic expression of activated or dominant negative transgenic variants of the Drosophila homolog of ribosomal S6 kinase (dS6K) has been shown to cause phenotypes that are consistent with a role for dS6K in growth, but whether the phenotypes were due …

Using Infrared Imagery To Estimate White-Tailed Deer Populations On The Pine Bluff Arsenal, D. M. Techentin, E. S. Boyd, W. E. Sparks, R. E. Kissell Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Military installations present unique challenges to natural resource managers managing wildlife populations. For those species that are hunted or trapped, it is important to provide data to these installations for achieving sustainable harvests. Pine Bluff Arsenal (PBA), a military installation in southeastern Arkansas, manages for a host of wildlife species including white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). However, baseline data regarding population size for deer are lacking. We used infrared technology and distance sampling to estimate the size of the winter, post-harvest deer population on PBA. We identified 9 competing models. The best model provided an estimate of density of 0.245 deer/ha …

Summary Of Previous And New Records Of The Least Darter (Etheostoma Microperca) In Arkansas, B. K. Wagner, M. D. Kottmyer, M. E. Slay
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The least darter, Etheostoma microperca, has a limited distribution in Arkansas and is designated as a species of greatest conservation need by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The fish was first documented in the state in 1938 in Wildcat Creek west of Springdale with additional discoveries in 1960, 1973, 1981, and 1982. A 1997 study documented the persistence of the species in Healing Spring Run and a spring run tributary of Osage Creek, 2 of the historic streams. Field sampling in 2004-2005 and 2010-2011, provided more concentrated sampling efforts in the basin. This study sought to determine the present …

Female Truck Drivers: Negotiating Identity In A Male Dominated Environment, Stephanie Sicard
Female Truck Drivers: Negotiating Identity In A Male Dominated Environment, Stephanie Sicard
McNair Scholars Journal
This research explores how women negotiate their identities when working in the male dominated field of truck driving. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the over three million people who make their living as truck drivers, only six percent are female. By combining data gathered using various ethnographic research methodologies, several aspects related to women working in the truck driving industry were interpreted from the theoretical perspectives of performance theory and optimal diversification theory. A literature review revealed that little academic research has been published on the field of truck driving, and even less is written about …

Little is known about factors that influence willingness to engage in treatment for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). From 2007 to 2008, in the context of a longitudinal study assessing ADHD detection and service use in the United States, we simultaneously elicited ADHD treatment perceptions from four stakeholder groups: adolescents, parents, health care professionals and teachers. We assessed their willingness to use ADHD interventions and views of potential undesirable effects of two pharmacological (short- and long-acting ADHD medications) and three psychosocial (ADHD education, behavior therapy, and counseling) treatments. In multiple regression analysis, willingness was found to be significantly related to respondent …
The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper
The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper

Most images of yetis in Western popular culture and scholarly literature portray them as secular, predatory monsters. These representations overlook important religious dimensions of yetis that are hidden in the current literature, so I take a new look at yetis in Tibetan religions in order to clarify our understanding of these legendary creatures. Following a phenomenological approach that sets aside the issue of the ontological existence of yetis, I examine texts, art, ritual, and folklore in order to propose four yeti personal ideal types: the Buddhist practitioner, the human religious ally, the friendly yeti, and the mountain deity yeti. These …
Owning Versus Renting: Thoughts On Housing Policy, Tax Incentives, And Middle Class Dreams, Neil H. Buchanan
Owning Versus Renting: Thoughts On Housing Policy, Tax Incentives, And Middle Class Dreams, Neil H. Buchanan
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This document gathers together 22 essays that were originally published as online commentary by Professor Neil H. Buchanan, between 2008 and 2012. All but one of the essays first appeared on the Dorf on Law blog (www.dorfonlaw.org). In these essays, Professor Buchanan discusses the arguments for and against government support of individual home ownership. Most of the essays focus on how to move away from the model of individual ownership. The latter essays, however, begin to embrace the possibility that home ownership incentives should be expanded, to mitigate the current upside-down quality of those subsidies, and to preserve middle-class professional …
Secular Crosses And The Neutrality Of Secularism, Marie E. Roper
Secular Crosses And The Neutrality Of Secularism, Marie E. Roper
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Note discusses analogous themes in two religious public display cases, Lautsi v. Italy, recently decided by the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), and Salazar v. Buono, recently handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court. Broader critiques of ECHR religious jurisprudence are addressed in the context of the interpretation and application of the principle of neutrality and the argument that secularism is not a necessary postulate of this demand. It is this theme of the relationship between neutrality and secularism that is also prominent in the American discussion about the relationship between government and religion. …

The Integration Of An Online Module On Student Learning, Karen S. Yehle, Karen Chang
School of Nursing Faculty Publications
Heart failure is a prevalent and costly condition. Patients with better self-management are less likely to be rehospitalized. An online interactive heart failure module was developed and integrated into a medical-surgical nursing course to assist students in learning how to care for patients with heart failure. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the integration of an online heart failure module improved baccalaureate nursing students' heart failure self-management knowledge. A pretest/posttest design was used to examine the effects of student knowledge of heart failure self-management following implementation of an online module. Among 235 students, significant improvement of heart …

Unusually High Body Mass In Virginia Meadow Voles, Sara B. Longtin, Robert K. Rose
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We used monthly capture-mark-recapture information to determine growth rates and life spans for 2 populations of meadow voles studied for 28 and 29 months in eastern Virginia in order to learn whether the exceptionally large body masses of some voles were due to rapid growth, long lives, or both. On 1 study grid, 64 males (19%) and 43 nonpregnant females (11%) were ≥70 g, with the largest male being 89 g. Mostly positive growth rates (averaging 1.1-3.9 g/month) were recorded, even in autumn and winter months, times when meadow voles are losing mass in northern populations, where most studies of …

Successful Genotyping Of Microsatellites In The Woolly Mammoth, Yasuko Ishida, Alfred L. Roca, Stephen Fratpietro, Alex D. Greenwood
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Genetic analyses using ancient DNA from Pleistocene and early Holocene fossils have largely relied on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences. Among woolly mammoths, Mammuthus primigenius, mtDNA analyses have identified 2 distinct clades (I and II) that diverged 1-2 Ma. Here, we establish that microsatellite markers can be effective on Pleistocene samples, successfully genotyping woolly mammoth specimens at 2 loci. Although significant differentiation at the 2 microsatellite loci was not detected between 16 clade I and 4 clade II woolly mammoths, our results demonstrate that the nuclear population structure of Pleistocene species can be examined using fast-evolving nuclear microsatellite markers.
Turning Over A New Sprout: Promoting Agricultural Health By Fostering The Coexistence Of Organic And Genetically Modified Crops In The Wake Of Monsanto Co. V. Geertson Seed Farms And The Deregulation Of Modified Alfalfa, Joseph Kiefer
Emory Law Journal
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agricultural health of the United States requires the concurrent feasibility, or coexistence, of organic crops and genetically modified crops. Both types of crops offer separate environmental, economic, and health benefits. Modified crops, or crops infused with beneficial genes to increase yield or decrease the need for chemical applications, are ubiquitous in U.S. farming. Similarly, organic crops, or crops grown without modified genes, are gaining popularity. Unfortunately, the coexistence of organic and modified crops is threatened by the phenomenon of gene flow.
Biblical Reflections On Co-Creating With The Redeemer, William Kurz, Anne Carpenter
Biblical Reflections On Co-Creating With The Redeemer, William Kurz, Anne Carpenter
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
The Bible does not explicitly answer questions about co-creating with God and discerning whether to try to have children. In consulting Scripture regarding contemporary concerns, one needs to go beyond historical exegesis. Reading Scripture as God's Word requires seeking what God, the divine author of all of Scripture, is currently saying in the biblical passages under study.
The primary foundation for biblical teaching about marriage and family is Genesis, especially concerning God's original intention in creating marriage (Gen 1-2). Humans are created in the image of God as male and female, and marriage is the two becoming one flesh. Most …
