Unpacking EugèNe Giraudet’S Library: Dance, Books, And International Relations In Fin-De-SièCle Paris, Dominique Bourassa

Library Staff Publications

Eugène Giraudet (1861-19?) was an exceptionally prolific and influential Parisian dance teacher, choreographer, author, and bibliophile. His library catalog, published in his 1900 Traité de la danse, Tome II, Grammaire de la danse et du bon ton, is more than a simple record of the books he owned. It also serves as a wish list and a directory of prominent dance personalities. As a whole, it presents an unparalleled conspectus of dance teaching, book collecting, business, and international networks radiating from a major metropolis—the historical urban center of the dance world—in the late-nineteenth century.

Establishing A Third Gender Category In Nepal: Process And Prognosis, Michael Bochenek, Kyle Knight

Emory International Law Review

In December 2007, the Supreme Court of Nepal issued a groundbreaking verdict in favor of sexual and gender minorities. The decision in Pant v. Nepal quickly became famous for declaring full, fundamental human rights for all "sexual and gender minorities"-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex ("LGBTI") citizens.

Why China's 2010 Medical Malpractice Reform Fails To Reform Medical Malpractice, Jordan Kearney

Emory International Law Review

Violence against doctors and healthcare staff in the People's Republic of China has turned doctors and nurses into masters of self-defense. Healthcare facilities in China have become battlegrounds of discontent. Scenes coming out of hospitals in the People's Republic of China look more like warzones than healthcare institutions.

Gold Medalist To Cheater?: Improving The World's Fight Against Doping In The Wake Of Fina V. Cielo, Geoffrey Rathgeber

Emory International Law Review

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Brazilian swimmer César Cielo Filho ('Cielo') lunged into the wall first in fifty-meter freestyle, finishing in 21.30 seconds, an Olympic-record time. In victory, Cielo thrust his fists into the air and repeatedly slammed them into the water, splashing with wild gesticulations. A half-minute later, he became more subdued and slid back into the water, hugging the lane line as tears welled in his eyes. After years of training and unwavering commitment to the sport of swimming, he had finally become the fastest swimmer in the world and an Olympic gold medalist. Three …

Corporate Social Responsibility After Disaster, Susan S. Kuo, Benjamin Means Jan 2012

Corporate Social Responsibility After Disaster, Susan S. Kuo, Benjamin Means

Faculty Publications

In recent years, corporations have devoted substantial resources to disaster relief worldwide. For instance, Wal-Mart garnered favorable attention for its contributions in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. According to company press releases, Wal-Mart recently gave hundreds of thousands of dollars for disaster relief in Brazil following a flood, and it has pledged millions in support of Japan in the wake of the tsunami.

Large corporations have not only the economic resources, but also the logistical capacity and operational expertise to make a difference in the first terrible days after a disaster. However, commentators disagree about how …

Seeking A Rational Lawyer For Consumer Claims After The Supreme Court Disconnects Consumers In At&T Mobility Llc V. Concepcion, Ann Marie Tracey, Shelley Mcgill Jan 2012

Seeking A Rational Lawyer For Consumer Claims After The Supreme Court Disconnects Consumers In At&T Mobility Llc V. Concepcion, Ann Marie Tracey, Shelley Mcgill

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Since Congress first enacted the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) in 1925, arbitration agreements have become ubiquitous in consumer contracts. Although Congress intended for the FAA to promote arbitration, Congress preserved the applicability of common law and equitable defenses, such as unconscionability, to arbitration agreements through section 2 of the FAA. The California Supreme Court in Discover Bank v. Superior Court established parameters for finding unconscionability in arbitration agreements, specifically with respect to waivers of collective redress. In AT&T Mobility LLC v. Concepcion, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5–4 decision, turned its back on consumers and section 2 of …

The Perfect Food For Perfect Health And Pleasure?, Cem Ekmekçi̇oğlu Jan 2012

The Perfect Food For Perfect Health And Pleasure?, Cem Ekmekçi̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

How perfect a food or meal is depends on hedonic and nutritional factors. The hedonic component is influenced by all of our 5 senses. In addition, social, environmental, and cognitive/experiential factors may have an effect on our attitude towards a food. On the other hand, nutrient composition and content, as well as bioavailability, determine how nutritionally perfect a food is. So, does the perfect food exist? What makes a food or a meal perfect? This paper will try to answer these questions by briefly discussing the most important variables.

An n-3 fatty acid supplement of 1.4 g/day was administered to the groups for 2 months. The anthropometric measurements of the individuals were taken at the onset and the end of trial, and orexin, fatty acids, and other biochemical parameters in the plasma were analyzed. Results: While there was no statistically significant change in anthropometric …

Transplantation Of Undifferentiated Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Improves Sciatic Nerve Regeneration And Functional Recovery Through Inside-Out Vein Graft In Rats, Rahim Mohammadi, Saeed Azizi, Nowruz Delirezh, Rahim Hobbenaghi, Keyvan Amini

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To study the effect of undifferentiated bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) on peripheral nerve regeneration using a rat sciatic nerve regeneration model. In recent years, cell transplantation has become the focus of attention, and reliable outcomes have been achieved in regeneration of the sciatic nerve. Materials and methods: A 10-mm sciatic nerve defect was bridged using an inside-out vein graft (IOVG) filled with undifferentiated BMSCs (2 × 107 cells/mL). In the control group, the vein was filled with phosphate buffered saline alone. The regenerated fibers were studied 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery. Assessment of nerve regeneration was based …
