Turkish Journal of Zoology

Various vertebrate-type steroid and gonadotropin hormones have been identified in invertebrates, including insects; however, studies in this area are not sufficient to presume a generalized role for these hormones. We identified testosterone, progesterone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the whole-body homogenates of Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and its parasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Testosterone concentration significantly decreased from early instars to last instars and pupal stages of G. mellonella; however, no significant difference was observed in progesterone levels at different stages. FSH concentration reached the highest level at the pupal stage of G. mellonella. No significant difference was …

Tax Deductions For Charitable Contributions: Domestic Activities, Foreign Activities, Or None Of The Above, Eric M. Zolt Jan 2012

Tax Deductions For Charitable Contributions: Domestic Activities, Foreign Activities, Or None Of The Above, Eric M. Zolt

UC Law Journal

Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and sixty-seven other billionaires have pledged to give a majority of their wealth for charitable purposes. The total dollar amount of potential funding for charitable activities is staggering. So is the potential loss of tax revenue. Because of past, current, and future tax benefits, U.S. taxpayers have funded and will fund a substantial portion of these charitable activities without any input in how the money is spent. These billionaires are not just being generous with their own money, but with the money of the American people. Should we allow tax benefits to subsidize charitable activities and …

Civility: Wth?, Sybril Bennett Jan 2012

Civility: Wth?, Sybril Bennett

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

The American tradition of "harmless" name-calling truly cements in middle school. It is typically dismissed as a part of growing μp; however, when more and more violent incidents are connected to middle school experiences, it should cause the country to pause. How hard is it to set the standard for civility during the pre-teen years? Ironically, if not tragically, much of the language on the national campaign trail is frighteningly reminiscent of lunchroom taunting. This historic divisiveness needs to be addressed in real time.

Reading The Civil War And Civilities In Faulkner's Unvanquished, Peter Kuryla

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

William Faulkner's novel The Unvanquished reduces the futility of the Southern cause in the Civil War to the comic image of two boys feverishly running back and forth carrying a leaky bucket from a water well. The scene in the novel moves beyond mere comic elegy for the Southern Lost Cause, becoming tragi-comic because the futility that Faulkner describes has to do with something much more stable and constant, namely the ways that the land, "that ponderable though passive recalcitrance of topography" being much older, resists the boys' efforts in miniature, but also scarcely listens to the reports of grownup …

The Civil Self: Authenticity With,Out Alienation, Melanie Walton Jan 2012

The Civil Self: Authenticity With,Out Alienation, Melanie Walton

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

What, then, is the true status of the relation between the examined self and the civic self-that is, between the self who lives the philosophically worthwhile life and the self who is the worthwhile citizen? Can one genuinely follow examination where it leads, find his or her true and authentic self, and be a good citizen at once? Or is the authentic life necessarily uncivil, leading to the necessary alienation of the philosophical soul from society?

Calibration Of Microsimulation Models For Multimodal Freight Networks, Justice Appiah Ph.D., P.E., Bhaven Naik, Scott Sorensen Jan 2012

Calibration Of Microsimulation Models For Multimodal Freight Networks, Justice Appiah Ph.D., P.E., Bhaven Naik, Scott Sorensen

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

This research presents a framework for incorporating the unique operating characteristics of multi-modal freight networks into the calibration process for microscopic traffic simulation models. Because of the nature of heavy freight movements in US DOT Region VII (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas), the focus of the project is on trucks or heavy gross vehicles (HGV). In particular, a genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization technique was developed and used to find optimum parameter values for the vehicle performance model used by “Verkehr In Staedten-SIMulationmodell (VISSIM)”, a widely used microscopic traffic simulation software. At present, the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), which is the …

Feasibility Of Integrating Natural And Constructed Wetlands In Roadway Drainage System Design, John S. Stansbury, Massom Moussavi, Tian Zhang Jan 2012

Feasibility Of Integrating Natural And Constructed Wetlands In Roadway Drainage System Design, John S. Stansbury, Massom Moussavi, Tian Zhang

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Stormwater from roadways could have negative effects on the environment and aquatic ecosystems. Typical highway runoff pollutants include solids; heavy metals, particularly cadmium, copper, and zinc; petroleum hydrocarbons; gasoline constituents; PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons); oxygen demanding compounds measured as COD (chemical oxygen demand) and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand); and road salts. Roadway runoff falls under the legislation of the Clean Water Act (CWA) via the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). CWA regulates discharge of nonpoint source pollutants, such as roadway runoff, by issuing permits to public entities which manage Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s). Part of the Nebraska Department …

Improving Safety Of The Surface Transportation System By Addressing The Issues Of Vulnerable Road Users: Case Of The Motorcyclists, Sundanda Dissanayake Ph.D., P.E., Mohammad Saad B. Shaheed

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Over the past few years, motorcycle fatalities have increased at an alarming rate in the United States. Motorcycle safety issues in Kansas are no different from the national scenario. Accordingly, this study examines motorcycle crashes in Kansas in order to identify and evaluate critical crash-related factors and subsequent impacts on motorcycle crash injury outcomes. State-level motorcycle rider fatality rates were investigated while considering various factors including helmet laws, using generalized least-squares regression modeling. A detailed characteristic analysis was carried out for motorcycle crashes, using Kansas crash data. Comparisons were made between several aspects of motorcycle crashes and other vehicle crashes. …

A Riverscape Perspective Of Pacific Salmonids And Aquatic Habitats Prior To Large-Scale Dam Removal In The Elwha River, Washington, Usa, S. J. Brenkman, Jeff J. Duda, Christian E. Torgersen, Ethan Welty, G.R. Pess, R. Peters, M.L. Mchenry Jan 2012

A Riverscape Perspective Of Pacific Salmonids And Aquatic Habitats Prior To Large-Scale Dam Removal In The Elwha River, Washington, Usa, S. J. Brenkman, Jeff J. Duda, Christian E. Torgersen, Ethan Welty, G.R. Pess, R. Peters, M.L. Mchenry

United States National Park Service: Publications

Dam removal has been increasingly proposed as a river restoration technique. In 2011, two large hydroelectric dams will be removed from Washington State’s Elwha River. Ten anadromous fish populations are expected to recolonise historical habitats after dam removal. A key to understanding watershed recolonisation is the collection of spatially continuous information on fish and aquatic habitats. A riverscape approach with an emphasis on biological data has rarely been applied in mid-sized, wilderness rivers, particularly in consecutive years prior to dam removal. Concurrent snorkel and habitat surveys were conducted from the headwaters to the mouth (rkm 65–0) of the Elwha River …

Habitat Fragmentation Effects On Annual Survival Of The Federally Protected Eastern Indigo Snake, D. R. Breininger, Marc J. Mazerolle, M. R. Bolt, M. L. Legare, J. H. Drese, J. E. Hines Jan 2012

Habitat Fragmentation Effects On Annual Survival Of The Federally Protected Eastern Indigo Snake, D. R. Breininger, Marc J. Mazerolle, M. R. Bolt, M. L. Legare, J. H. Drese, J. E. Hines

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The eastern indigo snake (Drymarchon couperi) is a federally listed species, most recently threatened by habitat loss and habitat degradation. In an effort to estimate snake survival, a total of 103 individuals (59 males, 44 females) were followed using radio-tracking from January 1998 to March 2004 in three landscape types that had increasing levels of habitat fragmentation: (1) conservation cores; (2) conservation areas along highways; (3) suburbs. Because of a large number of radio-tracking locations underground for which the state of snakes (i.e. alive or dead) could not be assessed, we employed a multistate approach to model snake …

Nest Predation, Food, And Female Age Explain Seasonal Declines In Clutch Size, Karie L. Decker, Courtney J. Conway, Joseph J. Fontaine Jan 2012

Nest Predation, Food, And Female Age Explain Seasonal Declines In Clutch Size, Karie L. Decker, Courtney J. Conway, Joseph J. Fontaine

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The selection pressures responsible for intra- and interspecific variation in avian clutch size have been debated for over half a century. Seasonal declines in clutch size represent one of the most robust patterns in avian systems, yet despite extensive research on the subject, the mechanisms underlying this pattern remain largely unknown. We tested a combination of experimental and observational predictions to evaluate ten hypotheses, representing both evolutionary and proximate mechanisms proposed to explain seasonal declines in avian clutch size. In line with long held life-history theory, we found strong support for both an evolved and proximate response to food availability …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The Chinese mystery snail (Bellamya chinensis) is an aquatic invasive species in North America. Little is known regarding this species’ impacts on freshwater ecosystems. It is believed that population densities can be high, yet no population estimates have been reported. We utilized a mark-recapture approach to generate a population estimate for Chinese mystery snail in Wild Plum Lake, a 6.47-ha reservoir in southeast Nebraska. We calculated, using bias-adjusted Lincoln-Petersen estimation, that there were approximately 664 adult snails within a 127 m2 transect (5.2 snails/m2). If this density was consistent throughout the littoral zone (depth) of …
