Skull Features Of The Common Vole (Microtus Arvalis Sensu Lato) From Hungary: Craniometrical Evidence For Its Taxonomic Detachment, Georgi Markov, Gabor Csorba, Maria Kocheva, Milena Gospodinova
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A revision was carried out on 245 adult skull specimens of the common vole (Microtus arvalis sensu lato) kept in the mammal collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest. A highly effective craniometric classification function was used to reveal whether they belonged to the common vole (M. arvalis Pallas, 1778 sensu stricto) or to the East European vole (Microtus levis Miller, 1908). It was found that M. levis specimens were present in the Hungarian mammal fauna; the boundaries of that animal's European range were thus expanded in the west. The distribution of the East European vole and the …

Insects are natural food for many vertebrates. Being nutritionally rich, acridids can be used to produce high quality feed for livestock industries. For a sustainable supply for the feed manufacturing companies, a huge acridid biomass must be obtained on a regular basis. Therefore, for successful acridid farming, a laboratory rearing system in semi-controlled conditions is proposed to produce a huge acridid biomass. Experiments were conducted to determine a favorable temperature and photoperiod for rearing the chosen multivoltine species, i.e. Oxya hyla hyla. For this purpose nymphal mortality, growth rate, fecundity, fertility, and adult dry weight were determined. The results revealed …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Within the wide distribution of spirlin in Iran, populations of this species inhabit a great variety of habitats, including qanats. We hypothesized that qanats may contribute to habitat-specific variation in the life history of the fish. To test this, a total of 240 specimens of Alburnoides bipunctatus, caught in the qanat of Uzineh (northern Iran) from October 2007 to August 2008, were examined for life history attributes. The population had a 5-year life cycle. The weight-length relationship (WLR) was estimated as W = 0.0068TL^{3.2559} for males, W = 0.0079TL^{3.2067} for females, and W = 0.0072TL^{3.2387} for the population, having a …

Growth Performance And Body Composition Of Kutum Fingerlings, Rutilus Frisii Kutum (Kamenskii 1901),In Response To Dietary Protein Levels, Ghaffar Ebrahimi, Hossein Ouraji
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimal dietary crude protein requirement for Rutilus frisii kutum fingerlings. Five isoenergetic experimental diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (32%, 37%, 42%, 47%, and 52%). Triplicate groups of 80 kutum (average weight 0.5 g) were stocked in 250-L tanks and fed to apparent satiation 3 times a day for 8 weeks. The results indicate that the growth performance and feed utilization of kutum were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by dietary protein level. The second polynomial regression of weight gain against protein level yielded an estimated optimal dietary protein requirement of 41.6%. Weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed efficiency increased with increasing the dietary protein level from 32% to 42%, but decreased significantly (P < 0.05) with further increases in dietary protein. The protein efficiency ratio was inversely correlated with dietary protein level. Feed intake was not affected (P > 0.05) by dietary protein level. No significant difference was found in the whole-body protein, lipid, moisture, or ash contents of fish fed the …

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are considered serious agricultural pests in Pakistan. Their stomach contents were examined (n = 63) in central Punjab, Pakistan, and it was found that 32 types of food items were consumed. Triticum aestivum, Saccharum officinarum, Zea mays, Oryza sativa, Prosopis juliflora, and earthworms were the main staples. The major components of the diet of wild boar in central Punjab originated from 58% cultivated crops, 30% uncultivated crops, 9% animal matter, and 3% unidentified matter. Wheat made up 23% of the total dry weight. O. sativa was the most intensively consumed item during autumn (37.87%), followed by …

Assessment Of Chromium Toxicity In Cyprinus Carpio Through Hematological And Biochemical Blood Markers, Tayybah Shaheen, Tanveer Akhtar
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Static renewal exposure of various sublethal concentrations of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] produced a deleterious effect on some hematological and biochemical parameters of Cyprinus carpio with the increase in concentration of metal. C. carpio breeders (W = 500 ± 9.5 g; L = 25.60 ± 2.6 cm) were randomly divided into the control group (n = 33) and treated group (n = 198), with 11 breeders/tank (8.84 m3). The groups were distributed into tanks containing 1 of 7 sublethal concentrations of Cr(VI) (0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 mg/L), with 3 replicates per concentration for 6 months. Monthly Cr(VI) …

Occurrence Of Fig Wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) In Ficus Caria And F. Microcarpa In Hatay, Turkey, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar
Turkish Journal of Zoology
This study focuses on fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea), considering that only 2 fig wasp species, Blastophaga psenes (L.) and Philotrypesis caricae (L.) (new record) are associated with Ficus carica in Turkey. Five fig wasps species, namely Eupristina verticillata Waterston, Walkerella microcarpae Boucek, Odontofroggatia ishii Wiebes, Philotrypesis taiwanensis Chen, and Philotrypesis emeryi Grandi were found on Ficus microcarpa (L.), which is an Asian fig tree, and has been ornamentally cultivated in Turkey since the 1930s. Among them, E. verticillata was detected as a specific pollinator of F. microcarpa, the rest of the species were not pollinators, and all of them are …
