Sustainable Activism: The Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Laura Feldman Jan 2012

Sustainable Activism: The Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Laura Feldman

Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers

This is a proposal for a community/university partnership which would integrate education and activism, "Sustainable Activism" into the PSU sustainability curriculum. This collaboration would provide students and community members with the opportunity to share expertise and resources in addressing the dangerous transportation and storage of nuclear wastes in our bio-region. Through place-based, participatory learning activities, such as a nuclear pilgrimage to Hanford, we will renew and celebrate our relationship with the ecosystems and communities along the Columbia River, and begin to heal the sacrificial landscape that is Hanford.

The Molecular And Behavioral Characterization Of Cav1.3 Over-Expressing Mice, Jamie Nicole Slater Jan 2012

The Molecular And Behavioral Characterization Of Cav1.3 Over-Expressing Mice, Jamie Nicole Slater

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Age-related cognitive decline refers to the memory impairment and difficulty learning new tasks that occurs during the normal process of aging. There are many possible changes that occur at the neuronal level that could account for age-related cognitive decline. One hypothesis suggests that a dysregulation of neuronal intracellular calcium concentration contributes to age-related cognitive deficits. Previous research suggests that an increase in neuronal L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (LVGCCs) occurs in the brain during aging. This increase could account for altered intracellular calcium concentration and lead to agerelated cognitive decline. A line of transgenic mice that over-express the LVGCC CaV …

Breeding-Site Selection By Ferruginous Hawks Within Utah’S Uintah Basin, Heather L. Keough, Michael R. Conover Jan 2012

Breeding-Site Selection By Ferruginous Hawks Within Utah’S Uintah Basin, Heather L. Keough, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We examined factors that might influence breeding-site selection in Ferruginous Hawks (Buteo regalis) in the Uintah Basin, Utah, an area undergoing rapid oil and gas development. We located 31 occupied nests of Ferruginous Hawk (10 during 2002, 10 during 2003, and 11 during 2004) and compared them to 32 historical nest sites of Ferruginous Hawks that were unoccupied during our study, and 32 random sites. Ferruginous Hawks selected nesting areas that were dominated by mixed desert-shrub vegetation communities with scattered Utah juniper trees (Juniperus osteosperma), higher prey abundance, and a high number of active petroleum wells. …

Geneva International Centre For Humanitarian Demining 2012 Annual Report, Gichd Jan 2012

Geneva International Centre For Humanitarian Demining 2012 Annual Report, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

The protection of civilians against all types of explosive weapons is at the core of the GICHD mandate. I am pleased to see that the United Nations Secretary-General, in his latest report on the protection of civilians in armed conflict of 22 May 2012, has urged relevant actors to undertake and support further collection and analysis of data related to the humanitarian impact caused by explosive weapons. In this vein, the GICHD has started to work on a classification scheme for explosive weapons.

In March 2012, a munitions depot exploded in the city centre of Brazzaville, resulting in hundreds of …

Apopo Annual Report 2012, Apopo

Global CWD Repository

In 2012, APOPO’s Mine Action Mozambique program delivered beyond set requirements and exceeded the expectations of the country’s national demining authority. APOPO fi nished its work in the Gaza province and declared it free of known minefi elds a year ahead of the initial schedule of 2013. This excellent achievement was realized due to the successful expansion of the program’s capacity. During the handover ceremony, HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium commended the work in Gaza as “a shining example of how national priorities can be achieved with the right partnerships, sustained effort and, most importantly, sheer human intent”.

The focus …

"Semiotics Of The Cloth": Reading Medieval Norse Textile Traditions, Kristen Marie Tibbs Jan 2012

"Semiotics Of The Cloth": Reading Medieval Norse Textile Traditions, Kristen Marie Tibbs

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Reading textiles from medieval Norse society supplements written sources and also provides insight into the voice of the individual who created these textiles. This project puts women and traditionally female tasks at the forefront of historical thought and analysis. I demonstrate that we can read textiles (via their material, color, style, and geographic location) alongside texts in order to expand our understanding of past cultures. Along with valuable archaeological remains of textiles and textile production tools, this research incorporates examples from the Sagas of the Icelanders in order to further understand the significance and symbolism of clothing and production in …

Expansion Dating: Calibrating Molecular Clocks In Marine Species From Expansions Onto The Sunda Shelf Following The Last Glacial Maximum, Eric D. Crandall, Elizabeth J. Sbrocco, Timery S. Deboer, Paul H. Barber, Kent E. Carpenter

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The rate of change in DNA is an important parameter for understanding molecular evolution, and hence for inferences drawn from studies of phylogeography and phylogenetics. Most rate calibrations for mitochondrial coding regions in marine species have been made from divergence dating for fossils and vicariant events older than 1-2 million years, and are typically 0.5% - 2% per lineage per million years. Recently, calibrations made with ancient DNA from younger dates have yielded faster rates, suggesting that estimates of the molecular rate of change depend on the time of calibration, decaying from the instantaneous mutation rate to the phylogenetic substitution …

Net Primary Production Of Terrestrial Ecosystems From 2000 To 2009, Christopher Potter, Steven Klooster, Vanessa Genovese Jan 2012

Net Primary Production Of Terrestrial Ecosystems From 2000 To 2009, Christopher Potter, Steven Klooster, Vanessa Genovese

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford) ecosystem model has been used to estimate monthly carbon fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems from 2000 to 2009, with global data inputs from NASA’s Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation cover mapping. Net primary production (NPP) flux for atmospheric carbon dioxide has varied slightly from year-to-year, but was predicted to have increased over short multi-year periods in the regions of the high-latitude Northern Hemisphere, South Asia, Central Africa, and the western Amazon since the year 2000. These CASA results for global NPP were found to be in contrast to other recently published modeling trends for terrestrial NPP …

Robert Penn Warren’S Emblematic Imagination In All The King’S Men, Thomas J. Derrick Jan 2012

Robert Penn Warren’S Emblematic Imagination In All The King’S Men, Thomas J. Derrick

Robert Penn Warren Studies

Robert Penn Warren’s use of a static image with an explanatory motto has not been traced to its roots in Renaissance emblems. Warren’s coy responses to interviewers about the historical basis of the Huey Long story were balanced by admissions of the literary influence of Elizabethan and Italian culture. Realistic and imaginative events provided material for the author’s deep and slowly developed technique of a dynamic relationship between image and idea. Three phases of development are noticed in Warren’s fiction. His preliminary experiment was seen in the 1943 novel, At Heaven’s Gate; his intermediate development came in his 1950 novel, …

Twilight Of The Boss: All The King’S Men And Norse Mythology, Leverett Butts Jan 2012

Twilight Of The Boss: All The King’S Men And Norse Mythology, Leverett Butts

Robert Penn Warren Studies

This essay explores the deep connections between Warren’s third novel and Norse mythology, particularly the Ragnarok myth. By comparing characters, settings, and events in the novel with various figures from Norse mythology, as well as Richard Wagner’s operatic interpretation of the Ragnarok myth Ring of the Nibelung, this paper contends that Warren employs Norse myths that mirror his own themes of balance and acceptance that run throughout his novel.

“Always The Truth, And Always The Lie”: Language As Symbol In Brother To Dragons, Allison Vanouse Jan 2012

“Always The Truth, And Always The Lie”: Language As Symbol In Brother To Dragons, Allison Vanouse

Robert Penn Warren Studies

Robert Penn Warren, in an introductory note to Brother to Dragons, writes that the poem is not ruled by action, but by its characters’ “inner urgencies ... the urgencies of argument.” He seems to be addressing something about the agency of language. In addressing the intoxicating puissance of argument itself, Warren activates a strange and uneasy space between words and the truths they try to describe. It is by navigating this space that he draws parallels between the voice of Thomas Jefferson — struggling with the unfulfilled legacy of his political writings — and the troubled role of the poet …

0300–0430, Jesus M. Sierra Jan 2012

0300–0430, Jesus M. Sierra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Night, a time everyone experiences and few contemplate. It is a time of darkness both figuratively and literally. Darkness of the soul and of the mind, when some rest and others are restless. We live in an age of endless day where the night is nothing more than a time to be blinded by electronic light. With this in mind the question becomes how was our night seen in the past? Also, how was the night and the darkness represented throughout time? To answer these questions I researched the topic of night and made a film entitled 0300 - 0430. …

Stability And Clustering Of Self-Similar Solutions Of Aggregation Equations, Hui Sun, David Uminsky, Andrea L. Bertozzi Jan 2012

Stability And Clustering Of Self-Similar Solutions Of Aggregation Equations, Hui Sun, David Uminsky, Andrea L. Bertozzi

Mathematics

In this paper we consider the linear stability of a family of exact collapsing similarity solutions to the aggregation equation ρ t = ∇ · (ρ∇K * ρ) in Rd , d ⩾ 2, where K(r) = r γ/γ with γ > 2. It was previously observed [Y. Huang and A. L. Bertozzi, “Self-similar blowup solutions to an aggregation equation in Rn,” J. SIAM Appl. Math.70, 2582–2603 (Year: 2010)]10.1137/090774495 that radially symmetric solutions are attracted to a self-similar collapsing shell profile in infinite time for γ > 2. In this paper we compute the stability of the …
