Natural Selection: A Concept In Need Of Some Evolution?, Charles H. Smith Jan 2012

Natural Selection: A Concept In Need Of Some Evolution?, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

In some respects natural selection is a quite simple theory, arrived at through the logical integration of three propositions (the presence of variation within natural populations, an absolutely limited resources base, and procreation capacities exceeding mere replacement numbers) whose individual truths can hardly be denied. Its relation to the larger subject of evolution, however, remains problematic. It is suggested here that a scaling-down of the meaning of natural selection to “the elimination of the unfit,” as originally intended by Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), might ultimately prove a more effective means of relating it to larger-scale, longer-term, evolutionary processes.

Antibiotics For Leptospirosis, David Brett-Major, Rodney Coldren Jan 2012

Antibiotics For Leptospirosis, David Brett-Major, Rodney Coldren

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis has a wide-ranging clinical and public health impact. Leptospira are globally distributed. Case attack rates are as high as 1:4 to 2:5 persons in exposed populations. In some settings mortality has exceeded 10% of infected people. The benefit of antibiotic therapy in the disease has been unclear.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to characterise the risks and benefits associated with use of antibiotic therapy in the management of leptospirosis.

SEARCH METHODS: We searched the The Cochrane Hepato-Biliary Group Controlled Trials Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Science Citation Index Expanded …

Assessment Of The In Vivo Genotoxicity Of Isomers Of Dinitrotoluene Using The Alkaline Comet And Peripheral Blood Micronucleus Assays, Emily May Lent, Lee C.B. Crouse, Michael J. Quinn Jr, Shannon M. Wallace Jan 2012

Wallace

United States Army: Publications

Dinitrotoluene (DNT) is a nitroaromatic explosive that exists as six isomers; two major isomers (2,4- and 2,6-DNT) and four minor isomers (2,3-, 2,5-, 3,4-, and 3,5-DNT). DNT has been found in soil, surface water, and groundwater near ammunition production plants. The major isomers of DNT are classified as “likely to cause cancer in humans.” In vitro studies have provided conflicting data regarding the genotoxicity of the minor isomers. Studies indicate that metabolism in the gut and liver are necessary to convert DNT to genotoxic compounds. As such, in the present study the genotoxicity of isomers of DNT was assessed using …

Integration Of Genome-Wide Expression And Methylation Data: Relevance To Aging And Alzheimer's Disease, Hany Alashwal, Remi Dosunmu, Nasser H. Zawia

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The progressive and latent nature of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) indicates the role of epigenetic modification in disease susceptibility. Previous studies from our lab show that developmental exposure to lead (Pb) perturbs the expression of AD-associated proteins. In order to better understand the role of DNA methylation as an epigenetic modifications mechanism in gene expression regulation, an integrative study of global gene expression and methylation profiles is essential. Given the different formats of gene expression and methylation data, combining these data for integrative analysis can be challenging. In this paper we describe a method to integrate and …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Tauopathies are a class of neurodegenerative diseases associated with the pathological aggregation of the tau protein in the human brain. The best known of these illnesses is Alzheimer’s disease (AD); a disease where the microtubule associated protein tau (MAPT) becomes hyperphosphorylated (lowering its binding affinity to microtubules) and aggregates within neurons in the form of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). In this paper we examine whether environmental factors play a significant role in tau pathogenesis. Our studies were conducted in a double mutant mouse model that expressed the human tau gene and lacked the gene for murine tau. The human tau mouse …

Genome-Wide Expression And Methylation Profiling In The Aged Rodent Brain Due To Early-Life Pb Exposure And Its Relevance To Aging, Remi Dosunmu, Hany Alashwal, Nasser H. Zawia

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this study, we assessed global gene expression patterns in adolescent mice exposed to lead (Pb) as infants and their aged siblings to identify reprogrammed genes. Global expression on postnatal day 20 and 700 was analyzed and genes that were down- and up-regulated (≥2 fold) were identified, clustered and analyzed for their relationship to DNA methylation. About 150 genes were differentially expressed in old age. In normal aging, we observed an up-regulation of genes related to the immune response, metal-binding, metabolism and transcription/transduction coupling. Prior exposure to Pb revealed a repression in these genes suggesting that disturbances in developmental stages …

Hepatic Immunosuppressive Effects Of Systemically Administered Novel Dextran–Methylprednisolone Prodrugs With Peptide Linkers In Rats, Imam H. Shaik, Hitesh K. Agarwal, Keykavous Parang, Reza Mehvar Jan 2012

Hepatic Immunosuppressive Effects Of Systemically Administered Novel Dextran–Methylprednisolone Prodrugs With Peptide Linkers In Rats, Imam H. Shaik, Hitesh K. Agarwal, Keykavous Parang, Reza Mehvar

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The hepatic immunosuppressive activities of two novel dextran prodrugs of methylprednisolone (MP) containing one (DMP1) or five (DMP5) amino acids as linkers were studied in rats. At various times (0–2 weeks) after intravenous administration of single 5 mg/kg (MP equivalent) doses of each prodrug or MP succinate (MPS), livers were isolated and immunologically stimulated ex vivo with lipopolysaccharide. The concentrations of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α in the outlet perfusate were then quantitated to assess immune response. Additionally, the concentrations of DMP1, DMP5, and/or MP were measured in the liver. MPS, DMP5, or DMP1 injections caused a maximum of 48.9%, 63.5%, …

Combination Of Trail And Actinomycin D Liposomes Enhances Antitumor Effect In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Liangran Guo, Li Fan, Jinfeng Ren, Zhiqing Pang, Yulong Ren, Jingwei Li, Ziyi Wen, Yong Qian, Lin Zhang, Hang Ma, Xinguo Jiang Jan 2012

Combination Of Trail And Actinomycin D Liposomes Enhances Antitumor Effect In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Liangran Guo, Li Fan, Jinfeng Ren, Zhiqing Pang, Yulong Ren, Jingwei Li, Ziyi Wen, Yong Qian, Lin Zhang, Hang Ma, Xinguo Jiang

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The intractability of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to multimodality treatments plays a large part in its extremely poor prognosis. Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a promising cytokine for selective induction of apoptosis in cancer cells; however, many NSCLC cell lines are resistant to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. The therapeutic effect can be restored by treatments combining TRAIL with chemotherapeutic agents. Actinomycin D (ActD) can sensitize NSCLC cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis by upregulation of death receptor 4 (DR4) or 5 (DR5). However, the use of ActD has significant drawbacks due to the side effects that result from its nonspecific biodistribution …

Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric In Western Europe: The Role Of Integration Policies In Extreme Right Populism, Nathalia Martins Jan 2012

Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric In Western Europe: The Role Of Integration Policies In Extreme Right Populism, Nathalia Martins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recent rise of Western Europe's extreme populist Right (EPR) parties has been attributed to the EPR's mobilization of grievances over the issue of immigration (Ignazi 1991; Taggart 1996; Fennema 1997; Schain, 1998; Mudde 1999; Brubaker 2001; Ivarsflaten 2007). This study contributes to the literature on EPR's anti-immigrant rhetoric by examining whether different integration policies play a role in conditioning anti-immigrant rhetoric, and if so, what their role is in the formulation of such rhetoric. This thesis is comprised of two case studies: the French assimilation approach to immigrant integration and the rhetoric of Front National's leaders Jean-Marie and Marine …

The Apocryphal Acts Of Jesus, John Gee Jan 2012

The Apocryphal Acts Of Jesus, John Gee

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Numerous noncanonical accounts of Jesus’s deeds exist. While some Latter-day Saints would like to find plain and precious things in the apocryphal accounts, few are to be found. Three types of accounts deal with Jesus as a child, his mortal ministry, or after his resurrection. The Jesus of the infancy gospels does not act like the Jesus of the real gospels. The apocryphal accounts of Jesus’s ministry usually push a particular theological agenda. The accounts of Jesus’s post-resurrection teaching often contain intriguing but bizarre information. On the whole, apocryphal accounts of Jesus’s ministry probably contain less useful information for Latter-day …

Will Free Speech Get A License To Drive In Florida?: A Proposal For Distinguishing Free Speech From Government Speech In Florida Specialty Plate Cases, Christopher Robert Dillingham Ii

Florida A & M University Law Review

Specialty license plates for automobiles, which publish individual and special interest Free Speech, present a quagmire for the courts when analyzed through the lens of the First Amendment's Free Speech Clause. While citizens and groups can obtain personalized license plates that publish both symbolic and written speech, state governments often exercise strict editorial control over their license plates. This regulatory scenario raises the dual questions of who is speaking - the government or the private party - and how much constitutional power the government has to engage in viewpoint restriction in regulating that speech in this traditional government forum. The …
