Into Me See: Visibility, Recognition, And The Need To Be Seen In Kazuo Ishiguro’S Never Let Me Go, Vicki L. Wine Carney

Anthós

While critical scholarship on Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go often emphasizes bioethics, transhumanism, and the commodification of life, this lens overlooks the novel’s profound engagement with the psychological necessity of visibility. This paper argues that the tragedy of the clones is fundamentally a crisis of recognition, where invisibility is not incidental but structurally produced to facilitate exploitation. Drawing on Caroline Levine’s concept of the "Form of Utility" and Axel Honneth’s Theory of Recognition, this study examines how systemic indoctrination and objectification deny the clones their innate humanity to soothe the conscience of the "normals." Furthermore, it analyzes the characters’ …

Investigating The Impact Of Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms On Freshwater Bivalves, Destiny Devlin Jan 2026

Investigating The Impact Of Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms On Freshwater Bivalves, Destiny Devlin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) threaten freshwater ecosystems by producing toxins that disrupt aquatic organism functions and pose risks to human health. This study investigated how exposure to toxin-producing cyanobacteria affects the behavior and toxin accumulation of Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) under controlled laboratory conditions. Asian clams were collected from a freshwater site in New Jersey, maintained in greenhouse bins, and fed either Microcystis novacekii (non-toxin-forming, control N=3) or Microcystis aeruginosa (toxin-forming, experimental N=3) at 100,000 cells/mL for 28 days. Weekly behavioral assays were conducted to track shell opening, burying, clustering, valve closure, foot extension, and time to first opening. Toxin …

"Exploring the theological, social, and cultural dimensions of one of America’s most ambitious prophetic movements

The Shakers’ Era of Manifestations ranks among the most astounding events in American religious history. During the 1840s, members of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing embarked on an audacious project of receiving visions, revelations, and other manifestations from the spirit world and convincing both themselves and the world’s people of their reality. Gifted Shakers known as “instruments” surrendered their bodies to possessing spirits and celestial beings who, in turn, provided the Believers with an unimaginable number of …

Case-Based Learning In Biology Education: A Systematic Literature Review, Elsje Theodora Maasawet, Jullya Christin Kolow

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Biology education often relies on content-intensive instructional materials that may encourage rote memorisation rather than conceptual understanding, potentially contributing to misconceptions. Case-Based Learning (CBL) offers an alternative by engaging students in applying biological concepts to authentic, real-life cases and promoting meaningful learning. Despite growing empirical interest in CBL, no systematic literature review has specifically synthesised its application in biology education. This study therefore examined publication trends, learning skills addressed, and conceptualisations of CBL in biology education. Relevant literature was retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science using “Case-Based Learning” as the search term. Following PRISMA-guided screening, 42 articles were included …

Engineering A Bioactive Pmma−Silica Hybrid Scaffold For Enhanced Bone Regeneration, Wai Ching Liu Jan 2026

Engineering A Bioactive Pmma−Silica Hybrid Scaffold For Enhanced Bone Regeneration, Wai Ching Liu

Department of Food and Health Sciences

Bone health is crucial for maintaining mobility, structural integrity, and overall well-being. However, bone-related surgeries are the second most common type of tissue transplant worldwide. A reliable and bioactive material is needed to address these issues. This has led to growing interest in bone tissue engineering (BTE) as a viable substitute strategy. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a commonly utilized material in implant fixation and bone tissue applications due to its mechanical and chemical stability and ease of processing. However, its low bioactivity and poor osseointegration limit its effectiveness in bone repair, posing a significant technical challenge. In this study, we …

Theranostic Angiopep-2-Conjugated Fetaox@Au Core−Shell Magnetic Nanoparticles For Glioma Treatment And Dual Medical Imaging, Wai Ching Liu

Department of Food and Health Sciences

In this work, iron−tantalum oxide nanoparticles (FeTaOx NPs) with a gold coating modified by Angiopep-2 (FeTaOx@Au-ANG) were developed to achieve dual-modality imaging and magnetically induced hyperthermia therapy for glioma. The 13.5 nm sized FeTaOx@Au-ANG NPs’ exhibited superparamagnetic behavior with excellent dual T1/T2-weighted MRI contrast of Fe existence and enhanced X-ray attenuation for computed tomography (CT) imaging, enabling accurate tumor localization through complementary imaging modalities. The incorporation of Ta and Au not only improved biocompatibility but also provided a high CT contrast effect. Upon magnetic stimulation, the NPs efficiently elevated the intratumoral temperature, leading to a significant (∼90%) reduction in glioma …

Elephant Economics And Agrarian Transitions: Conditions For Benefiting From Elephant Tourism Market In An Upland Karen (Paganyaw) Village, Xiaoyun Neo, Aswin Baharuddin, Nur Fadilah Sunardi

Forest and Society

In rural, upland northern Thailand, Indigenous Karen (Paganyaw) communities have long practiced diversified subsistence cultivation and forest-based livelihoods. Yet state conservation policies and tourism-led development are reshaping these agrarian systems and livelihoods. This paper explores how one Karen (Paganyaw) community in Chiang Mai province reconfigures its livelihood strategies amid the decline of swidden cultivation and the rise of elephant tourism as a new rural economy. Beyond subsistence cultivation, villagers are seeking to diversify their households and personal income by participating in this new economic sector. We argue that the transition out of small-scale agriculture into tourism is not a neutral …

Use Of Virtual Fences To Co-Fence Two Groups Of Cattle With Adjacent Virtual Boundaries, Thomas E. Aquino, Mary E. Drewnoski, Biquan Zhao, Pedro Henrique Jota Fernandes, Isaque F. Vicci, Mitchell B. Stephenson, Yijie Xiong

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Summary with Implications

While virtual fencing (VF) has proven effective in managing cattle, limited data exist on using it to manage two separate groups of cattle within the same area. If successful, this approach could reduce infrastructure costs and increase management flexibility. In this trial, VF-trained steers (n = 39) were placed in pastures with either no neighboring cattle (isolated) or next to a separate group with only a VF boundary between them (co-fenced). Containment exceeded 99% across all cattle, demonstrating that VF creates effective boundaries regardless of fence treatment. There was no statistical difference in the number of audio …

Using High-Pressure Processing To Improve Dark-Cutting Beef Color In Tenderloins, Ashley A. Hahn, Leila G. Venzor, Shelley A. Curry, Grace C. Johnson, Mary-Grace C. Danao, Ranjith Ramanathan, Gary A. Sullivan, Jordan C. Wicks

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Summary with Implications

Dark-cutting beef is a quality defect that negatively impacts consumer appeal and affects the carcass value for both producers and meat processors. These economic losses stem from poor visual appearance and reduced consumer appeal in the retail setting. Notably, different muscles within a carcass exhibit varying degrees of color stability which can influence how dark-cutting manifests across cuts. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of high-pressure processing (HPP) on dark-cutting color-labile muscle. Dark-cutting and normal tenderloins were collected and portioned into two equal sections. Dark-cutting tenderloins were assigned one of 3 treatments: No HPP, 300 …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Summary with Implications

Dark-cutting beef is a result of preharvest stress and devalues the resulting carcass. High-pressure processing (HPP) has been recently identified as a potential strategy to improve the undesirable appearance of dark-cutting beef. Dark-cutting beef strip loins were collected from a local processing facility, sectioned, and assigned an HPP pressure (300 or 450 MPa) and holding time (0, 1, 30, 60, or 90 s). Overall, HPP increased the lightness and redness of dark-cutting beef, particularly the longer the pressure was held at both pressure levels. Additionally, negative effects such as increased meat discoloration, decreased tenderness, and increased rancidity …

Evaluating Sorghum X Sudangrass Seed Digestibility, Evan Blank, Thomas E. Aquino, Mary E. Drewnoski Jan 2026

Evaluating Sorghum X Sudangrass Seed Digestibility, Evan Blank, Thomas E. Aquino, Mary E. Drewnoski

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Summary with Implications

A sorghum-sudangrass hybrid was swathed in the hard dough stage and grazed by growing steers from November 2023 to January 2024. Steers appeared to select the seedheads when grazing. The seed made up approximately 12.6% of swathed forage mass, but its energy contribution appears limited due to poor digestibility. When incubated whole, only 23% of dry matter and 13% of starch was digestible. Grinding improved digestibility but still left 40% of the dry matter and over 85% of starch unavailable. Weathering over two months did not improve digestibility, indicating the seed coat remains intact through winter. Compared …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Summary with Implications

Pregnancy and estrous cycle management are critical considerations when feeding intact heifers in the feedyard. Alternatively, producers can opt to spay heifers, which eliminates hormonal fluctuations associated with the estrous cycle. A proportion of U.S. feedlots have spayed heifers on feed, although there is limited data comparing the performance of spayed heifers to intact heifers. A commercial feedlot experiment was conducted to compare performance between spayed and intact heifers fed melengestrol acetate. Intact heifers had greater ADG and tended to have greater DMI compared to spayed heifers, although no difference in feed conversion was observed. Carcass weight …

Markov Chain Wave Generative Adversarial Network For Bee Bioacoustic Signal Synthesis, Kumudu Samarappuli, Iman Ardekani, Mahsa Mohaghegh, Abdolhossein Sarrafzadeh

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a framework for synthesizing bee bioacoustic signals associated with hive events. While existing approaches like WaveGAN have shown promise in audio generation, they often fail to preserve the subtle temporal and spectral features of bioacoustic signals critical for event-specific classification. The proposed method, MCWaveGAN, extends WaveGAN with a Markov Chain refinement stage, producing synthetic signals that more closely match the distribution of real bioacoustic data. Experimental results show that this method captures signal characteristics more effectively than WaveGAN alone. Furthermore, when integrated into a classifier, synthesized signals improved hive status prediction accuracy. These results highlight the potential …
