Dubious Role Of Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis In Pathogenesis Of Type I Diabetes, Saisathya Thanigachalam
Dubious Role Of Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis In Pathogenesis Of Type I Diabetes, Saisathya Thanigachalam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (TIDM) is a chronic disorder in which the insulin producing beta cells are selectively self-destroyed. Although the etiology of the disease has not been determined, genetic dispositions such as SLC11A1 polymorphism in suffering patients have been reported. The role of pathogenic microorganisms such as Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in TIDM has also been recently debated. MAP is already known to cause paratuberculosis in cattle and now it is a strong suspect of causing autoimmune diseases in humans such as Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune Thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune diabetes. We hypothesis that molecular …

Aim: To explore the anti-inflammatory potential of adeno-associated virus-mediated delivery of Tregitope 167 in an experimental colitis model.
Methods: The trinitrobenzene sulfonate (TNBS) model of induced colitis was used in Balb/c mice. Subsequently after intravenous adeno-associated virus-mediated regulatory T-cell epitopes (Tregitope) delivery, acute colitis was initiated by intra-rectal administration of 1.5 mg TNBS in 40% ethanol followed by a second treatment with TNBS (0.75 mg in 20% ethanol) 8 d later. Control groups included mice not treated with TNBS (healthy control group) and mice treated by TNBS only (diseased group). At the time of sacrifice colon weight, the disease activity …

Pulsed Laser Deposition Of Magnesium Oxide Nanowires And Their Physical, Structural, And Biological Properties, Dang The Ninh
Theses
One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures, such as nanowire, nanorods, and nanotubes, have shown great promise in both fundamental and application studies due to their size, structure, and several other unique properties. In this study, magnesium oxide (MgO) nanowires (NWs) with varying diameter have been grown on magnesium oxide (100) single crystal substrates using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Magnesium oxide was chosen due to its high melting point, high hardness, high tensile strength, excellence diffusion barrier, and good biocompatibility. In the fabrication of MgO nanowires, gold has been used as a catalyst. A systematic study has been carried out to identify …

In Vitro Modulation Of Gene Expression In Bovine Blood Neutrophils, Ashley R. Turner
Theses
Concerns for animal welfare, food safety, and security fuel interest in understanding modulators of innate immunity. The accumulation of neutrophils and activation of toll-like receptors (TLRs) at infection sites are critical events of innate host defense. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of Lipopolysaccaride (LPS), Peptidoglycan (PGN), Nystatin (NYS), and Quebracho (Q) extract on bovine neutrophils activation in relation to expression of genes encoding TLR2, TLR4, natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1 (Nramp1), and the cytokines TNF-α and IL-10. Genes in genomic DNA were detected from blood samples, except IL-10. Neutrophils were isolated from four Holstein Friesian …

Artificial Neural Network Application In Environmental Engineering., Xiaojue Tao
Theses
The objective of this thesis research is to apply two artificial neural network (ANN) methods, back-propagation neural network (BPN) and radial basis function generalized regression neural network (RBFGRNN) in two environmental engineering case studies to explore their ability to modeling the complex environmental engineering systems. The traditional environmental engineering systems modeling are frequently using the physical-based modeling methods. . Their performance is decided by the quantity of samples and quality of sampling methods, and it is also based on the physical laws they obeyed and the system knowledge they explored. But ANN offers a unique and alternative solution to bridge …

Is A Self-Catering Holiday With The Family Really A Holiday For Mothers? Examining The Balance Of Household Responsibilities While On Holiday From A Female Perspective, Ziene Mottiar, Deirdre Quinn
Articles
The commonly cited definition of what constitutes a holiday is that it is a change from the norm, or an escape from everyday life. But is this the case if tourists are going on a self-catering holiday where many of the tasks from everyday life such as cleaning, minding children and cooking must still be undertaken? This research is specifically interested in the role of mothers, from their own perspectives, on such holidays. It explores how household responsibilities are divided between partners when on holiday and questions does this differ from the situation when at home? In so doing this …

Whither The "Year Of China"?, Denise Ho, Jared Flanery
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
To conclude my Chinese history lecture course at the University of Kentucky, I introduce my undergraduates to the concept of “soft power” and suggest that Confucius Institutes are emblematic of China’s cultural diplomacy, which aims to project a peaceful image abroad. Confucius Institutes are centers for teaching Chinese language and culture overseas; they are organized by an office known as Hanban in the Ministry of Education, though their funding comes directly from the Chinese government’s treasury. There are now over 350 Confucius Institutes in the world, and two of these are in the state of Kentucky.

Size Assortment In Mixed-Species Groups Of Juvenile-Phase Striped Parrotfish (Scarus Iserti) In The Bahamas, Paul Switzer, Daniel Quinn
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Striped parrotfish (Scarus iserti) often form heterospecific groups with other reef fishes. In this study, we examined the species and body size composition of these groups on reefs in The Bahamas. Groups averaged approximately 4 S. iserti and 2 associated species, with surgeonfish (Acanthurus chirurgus and A. bahianus), slippery dick (Halichoeres bivittatus), and bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum) as the most common associates. Fewer groups than expected had only 1 associate; groups with 3 or more associates were more common than expected. Both the S. iserti and associated species tended to be closely sizematched within a group, perhaps due to benefits …

The Royal Presidio Of Monterey : A Socio-Cultural Analysis Based On Zooarchaeological Remains, Jennifer A. Lucido
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Royal Presidio of Monterey served as the focal institution of military power and government of Alta California from ca. 1770 to 1840 during the Spanish colonial missionization of the indigenous populations. Like the Franciscan missions, the Royal Presidio of Monterey was a multicultural settlement, home to Spanish soldiers, mestizo settlers, and Native Californians. During archaeological monitoring of the Royal Presidio of Monterrey, spanning from 2006 through 2008 which was conducted by Dr. Ruben Mendoza and his field crew of California State University, Monterey Bay students, significant Mission era architectural features were discovered and identified, in addition to the recovery …

A Functional Trait Perspective On Plant Invasion, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Brenda J. Grewell, Carla M. D'Antonio
Biology
Global environmental change will affect non-native plant invasions, with profound potential impacts on native plant populations, communities and ecosystems. In this context, we review plant functional traits, particularly those that drive invader abundance (invasiveness) and impacts, as well as the integration of these traitsacross multiple ecological scales, and as a basis for restoration and management.
We review the concepts and terminology surrounding functional traits and how functional traits influence processes at the individual level. We explore how phenotypic plasticity may lead to rapid evolution of novel traits facilitating invasiveness in changing environments and then oscale up' to evaluate the relative …

Use Of Controlled Release (Encapsulated Chemical Oxidant) Polymer For Remediation Of Contaminated Water Used For Intentional Biothreat Terrorism And Its Potential Application For Disinfection Of Agricultural Waste Pollution., Christopher Ross Jackson
Theses
The threat of biological agents being used to harm mass populations are of extreme importance in the 21st century. Pathogenic agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoan, and helminthes are of major concern in the wake that they can be used to cause death to anyone exposed. Agents like these can be disseminated by air, through water, or from animal, food, or human-to-human transmission. Controlled release methods are extensively used in the medical and agricultural industry to release chemicals at controlled rates for drug delivery in the human body or pesticide treatments for farming. Few researchers have investigated the use …
