“Inspired By Our Feminist Foremothers”: Feminists For Life’S Appropriation Of First-Wave Feminist Rhetoric And History, Emily Tuttle Jan 2012

“Inspired By Our Feminist Foremothers”: Feminists For Life’S Appropriation Of First-Wave Feminist Rhetoric And History, Emily Tuttle

American Studies Senior Theses

This thesis explores Feminist for Life’s (FFL) appropriation of feminist history and rhetoric in creating their individual identity as a new and unique social organization. I examine how FFL, a pro-life organization, utilizes traditional feminist history and literature in addition to mainstream feminist language to legitimize their mission. I examine FFL’s use of these traditionally pro-choice tools and the manner in which FFL uses them to establish itself as the true continuum of first-wave feminism. In doing so, I enter a scholarly debate concerning both the framing of dissident identities within social movements and the self-characterization of Feminists for Life …

“Fast Food For The Filipino Soul”: Consuming Identity At Jollibee In Queens, Rebecca Gehman Jan 2012

“Fast Food For The Filipino Soul”: Consuming Identity At Jollibee In Queens, Rebecca Gehman

American Studies Senior Theses

On February 13, 2009 in Woodside, Queens an estimated 4,500 Filipino- Americans formed a line outside in thirty five-degree weather. Braving the cold and a nearly four hour wait these Filipino-Americans were desperate for the first east-coast extension of Jollibee to open itʼs doors. The media that covered the opening attempted to understand what was behind this Filipino fervor, one New York Times article was titled “Fast Food for the Filipino Soul”. Filipinos told reporters they were desperate for a “taste of home.” But what is this “taste of home”? The Filipino owned and operated fast food chain serves hot …

The New Media Deal: Obama, The Information Age, And The Shadow Of Fdr, Grace Loughney Jan 2012

The New Media Deal: Obama, The Information Age, And The Shadow Of Fdr, Grace Loughney

American Studies Senior Theses

This thesis project focuses on the ways in which American presidents use media to engage the public in political discourse and reassure the masses in times of economic crisis. In a comparative analysis of the different media and political rhetoric employed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the 1933 banking crisis and Barack Obama during the 2009 recession, I explore why Roosevelt’s “fireside chats” proved more successful than Obama’s imitations on YouTube and other media platforms in 2009. By engaging in media theory on how political discourse is shaped by the medium within which it is presented, as well as historical …

“I Ran My Fingers Through Her Coal Black Hair To Cover Up My Sin” : Violence, Gender And Faith In 19th Century Appalachian Murdered Girl Ballads, Ariadne Blayde Jan 2012

“I Ran My Fingers Through Her Coal Black Hair To Cover Up My Sin” : Violence, Gender And Faith In 19th Century Appalachian Murdered Girl Ballads, Ariadne Blayde

American Studies Senior Theses

My thesis presents a literary and historical examination of the genre of songs known as “Murdered Girl ballads” in the canon of 19th century Southern Appalachian folk music. The Murdered Girl ballad, which tells the story of a young woman murdered by her male lover, became an archetypal narrative in Appalachian folklore in the 1800’s. In my research I examine some of the many Appalachian Murdered Girl ballads and the mountain society they sprang from, drawing connections between the lyrics of the ballads and three specific aspects of Appalachian mountain life: violence, gender roles, and religion. I argue that at …

Melatonin And Its Effect On Learning And Memory, Nechama Leah Bauman (Cahn)

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Melatonin is a neurohormone produced by the pineal gland and secreted into the body in a circadian rhythm. Melatonin is known to be involved in many vital body functions, including sleep, reproduction, and immune response. Exogenous melatonin, sold as over the counter natural supplements in drugstores, is commonly taken by many people to help cure various ailments. Melatonin also plays a role in the hippocampus. This paper investigates the effects of melatonin on long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. Long-term potentiation, described as a long-lasting strengthening of synapses between nerve cells, is thought to be responsible for long-term memory retention. It …

Investigating The Applicability Of The Neurodevelopmental Framework To Enhance Learning For All Students, Especially Those With Mild To Moderate Disabilites, Lisa B. Kline

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The overall focus of this study was to investigate the applicability of the neurodevelopmental framework to enhance learning for all students. The present study sought to provide educators with a sufficient foundation for how movement influences neurodevelopmental maturation for learning, with possible implications for reading, by creating a handbook to assist educators to become comfortable incorporating developmental movement patterns into lessons. One goal was to bring attention to primary reflex persistence interfering with typical movement development, leg length inequality (LLI) connected to primary reflex persistence, and the possible use of LLI assessment to be used as a screening tool for …

Determination Of Mutagenic Potencies Of Aqueous Extracts Of Thermopsis Turcica By Ames Test, Recep Li̇man, Yasi̇n Eren, Di̇lek Akyil, Muhsi̇n Konuk

Turkish Journal of Biology

Thermopsis turcica is an endemic species of Turkey popularly known as Eber Sarısı or Piyam; it is a member of the Thermopsis genus, which contains plants considered to be medicinal throughout the world. In this study, the mutagenic effect of aqueous extracts obtained from the leaves, root, stem, and flowers of T. turcica were evaluated by the Ames test, using Salmonella typhimurium TA97, TA98, TA100, and TA102 strains with and without an S9 activation system. The results obtained were analyzed statistically using SPSS for Windows, and the Mann-Whitney test was performed for comparisons. The results showed that all of the …

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effects of seasonal variation on the fatty acid composition of total lipid, triacylglycerol, and phospholipid in the dorsal muscle of Capoeta trutta were assessed by gas chromatographic method. A total of 18 different fatty acids were determined in the composition of C. trutta. The variations in fatty acid composition of total lipid, triacylglycerol, and phospholipid were recorded throughout the seasons. The total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were the most important groups of total lipid. Total saturated fatty acid (SFA) and total MUFA were seen to increase from spring to summer while total PUFA decreased …

Nonlinear Effects Of Group Size On The Success Of Wolves Hunting Elk, Daniel R. Macnulty, Douglas W. Smith, L. David Mech, John A. Vucetich, Craig Packer Jan 2012

Nonlinear Effects Of Group Size On The Success Of Wolves Hunting Elk, Daniel R. Macnulty, Douglas W. Smith, L. David Mech, John A. Vucetich, Craig Packer

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Despite the popular view that social predators live in groups because group hunting facilitates prey capture, the apparent tendency for hunting success to peak at small group sizes suggests that the formation of large groups is unrelated to prey capture. Few empirical studies, however, have tested for nonlinear relationships between hunting success and group size, and none have demonstrated why success trails off after peaking. Here, we use a unique dataset of observations of individually known wolves (Canis lupus) hunting elk (Cervus elaphus) in Yellowstone National Park to show that the relationship between success and group …

Αβ Cells And A Mixed Th1/Th17 Response Are Important In Organic Dust-Induced Airway Disease, Jill Poole, Angela Gleason, Christopher Bauer, William West, Neil Alexis, Stephen J. Reynolds, Debra J. Romberger, Tammy Kielian Jan 2012

Αβ Cells And A Mixed Th1/Th17 Response Are Important In Organic Dust-Induced Airway Disease, Jill Poole, Angela Gleason, Christopher Bauer, William West, Neil Alexis, Stephen J. Reynolds, Debra J. Romberger, Tammy Kielian

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background: Organic dust exposure in agricultural environments induces an inflammatory response that attenuates over time, yet repetitive dust exposures result in chronic lung diseases. Animal models resembling this chronic lung inflammatory response have been developed, yet the underlying cellular mechanisms are not well defined.

Objective: Because mice repetitively exposed to organic dust extracts (DE) display increased CD3+ T cell lung infiltrates, we sought to determine the phenotype and importance of these cells.

Methods: Mice received swine confinement DE repetitively for 3 weeks by established intranasal inhalation protocol. Studies were conducted with peptidoglycan (PGN) because it is a …

Proteasome Activity And Autophagosome Content In Liver Are Reciprocally Regulated By Ethanol Treatment, Paul G. Thomes, Casey S. Trambly, Geoffrey M. Thiele, Michael J. Duryee, Howard S. Fox, James Haorah, Terrence M. Donohue Jr Jan 2012

Proteasome Activity And Autophagosome Content In Liver Are Reciprocally Regulated By Ethanol Treatment, Paul G. Thomes, Casey S. Trambly, Geoffrey M. Thiele, Michael J. Duryee, Howard S. Fox, James Haorah, Terrence M. Donohue Jr

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

The proteasome and autophagy are two major intracellular protein degradation pathways and the regulation of each by ethanol metabolism affects cellular integrity. Using acute and chronic ethanol feeding to mice in vivo, and precision-cut rat liver slices (PCLS) ex vivo, we examined whether ethanol treatment altered these proteolytic pathways. In acute studies, we gave C57Bl/6 mice either ethanol or phosphate- buffered saline (PBS) by gastric intubation and sacrificed them 12 h later. PCLS were exposed to 0 or 50 mM ethanol for 12 and 24 h with or without 4-methylpyrazole (4MP). In chronic studies we pair-fed control and …

Saving Their Own Souls: How Rluipa Failed To Deliver On Its Promises, Sarah Gerwig-Moore Jan 2012

Saving Their Own Souls: How Rluipa Failed To Deliver On Its Promises, Sarah Gerwig-Moore

Articles

In the summer of 2001, as a graduate student in law and theology, I began work on a master’s thesis that examined the predicament of men of faith on San Quentin’s Condemned Row. I was working in the California Appellate Project—mostly assisting with direct appeals and state habeas petitions on behalf of men under a death sentence—when a colleague guided me into theological conversations with some of our clients. On Condemned Row, they waited—up to five years to be assigned a court-appointed appellate attorney, on judges’ rulings, and to find whether the legal system would ultimately exact the penalty it …

Families With Hungry Children And The Transition From Preschool To Kindergarten, Colleen Heflin, Irma Arteaga, Sara Gable Jan 2012

Families With Hungry Children And The Transition From Preschool To Kindergarten, Colleen Heflin, Irma Arteaga, Sara Gable

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper exploits a source of variation in the eligibility for federal nutrition programs to identify the program effects on food insecurity. Children are eligible for the WIC program until the day before they turn 61 months old. The result is an age discontinuity in program participation at the 61-month cutoff. Using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study Birth-cohort dataset, we find strong evidence of a sizeable increase in household food insecurity at the 61- month cutoff. Our findings are robust to different model specifications, datasets, and various bandwidth choices using various non-parametric estimations.

Introducing Telehealth To Nursing Students In A Pre-Licensure Program, Dwayne F. More Jan 2012

Introducing Telehealth To Nursing Students In A Pre-Licensure Program, Dwayne F. More

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Telehealth has emerged as an enhancement to health care, giving clients greater access to care providers than ever before. It has benefited persons living in remote areas who cannot readily access health services and it has helped clients who have chronic disease conditions that require frequent monitoring, saving themselves and hospitals thousands of dollars. Nurses are an important part of delivering telehealth, yet it is not currently being taught in many nursing courses. The purpose of this project is to introduce telehealth into a pre-licensure nursing program via a learning module and to assess the students' understanding of the material …

Roots Of Farm And Family, Carol Gjenvick Jan 2012

Roots Of Farm And Family, Carol Gjenvick

Graduate Student Independent Studies

The current food industry is a vast and confusing system that often generates contradicting information, new jargon and trends on how and what to eat. Most families in urban and suburban regions shop at local grocery stores, supermarkets or chains and are far removed from the origins of their food supply. Even with the growing support of farmers markets and local farmers, the average person no longer has access to an actual farm. Children in particular, are less likely to understand how a farm operates, the essential role of the farmer, the impact of seasonal changes on food supplies and …
