Metabolic Hypothesis For Human Altriciality, Holly M. Dunsworth, Anna G. Warrener, Terrence Deacon, Peter T. Ellison, Herman Pontzer Jan 2012

Metabolic Hypothesis For Human Altriciality, Holly M. Dunsworth, Anna G. Warrener, Terrence Deacon, Peter T. Ellison, Herman Pontzer

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The classic anthropological hypothesis known as the “obstetrical dilemma” is a well-known explanation for human altriciality, a condition that has significant implications for human social and behavioral evolution. The hypothesis holds that antagonistic selection for a large neonatal brain and a narrow, bipedal-adapted birth canal poses a problem for childbirth; the hominin “solution” is to truncate gestation, resulting in an altricial neonate. This explanation for human altriciality based on pelvic constraints persists despite data linking human life history to that of other species. Here, we present evidence that challenges the importance of pelvic morphology and mechanics in the evolution of …

Control Of Interneuron Dendritic Growth Through Nrg1/Erbb4-Mediated Kalirin-7 Disinhibition., M. E. Cahill, K. A. Jones, I. Rafalovich, Z. Xie, C. S. Barros, U. Müller, P. Penzes

Peninsula Medical School

Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) is a secreted trophic factor that activates the postsynaptic erbB4 receptor tyrosine kinase. Both NRG1 and erbB4 have been repeatedly associated with schizophrenia, but their downstream targets are not well characterized. ErbB4 is highly abundant in interneurons, and NRG1-mediated erbB4 activation has been shown to modulate interneuron function, but the role for NRG1-erbB4 signaling in regulating interneuron dendritic growth is not well understood. Here we show that NRG1/erbB4 promote the growth of dendrites in mature interneurons through kalirin, a major dendritic Rac1-GEF. Recent studies have shown associations of the KALRN gene with schizophrenia. Our data point to …

All Might Have Won, But Not All Have The Prize: Optimal Treatment For Substance Abuse Among Adolescents With Conduct Problems, Jayson Spas, Susan Ramsey, Andrea L. Paiva, L. A.R. Stein Jan 2012

All Might Have Won, But Not All Have The Prize: Optimal Treatment For Substance Abuse Among Adolescents With Conduct Problems, Jayson Spas, Susan Ramsey, Andrea L. Paiva, L. A.R. Stein

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

Considerable evidence from the literature on treatment outcomes indicates that substance abuse treatment among adolescents with conduct problems varies widely. Treatments commonly used among this population are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), 12-step facilitation, multisystemic therapy (MST), psychoeducation (PE), and motivational interviewing (MI). This manuscript thoroughly and systematically reviews the available literature to determine which treatment is optimal for substance-abusing adolescents with conduct problems. Results suggest that although there are several evidence-based and empirically supported treatments, those that incorporate family-based intervention consistently provide the most positive treatment outcomes. In particular, this review further reveals that although many interventions have gained empirical support …

The following list of books contain—as far as we have been able to ascertain—most of those books which have been written in Danish by Danish-American authors. Included in the list are those Danish authors who have written about conditions in America or which have been published by Danish American publishers. The multitudes of other Danish authors have not been included. We do not make the claim that the list is complete, it has simply been quite difficult to ensure completeness in the short time we have had available. We have not included those small publications which may have been published …

Corruption And Voter Turnout: Evidence From The Us States, William F. Shughart Ii, Monica Escaleras, Peter T. Calcagno

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

The literature on voter turnout focuses on the determinants of the electorate’s vote supply. There is growing recognition, however, that the demanders of votes—candidates, political parties, and interest groups—have strong incentives to invest resources in mobilizing support on Election Day. The authors test the hypothesis that corruption rents increase the value of holding public office and, hence, elicit greater demand-side effort in building winning coalitions. Analyzing a pooled time-series data set of public officials convicted of misusing their offices between 1979 and 2005, we find, after controlling for other influential factors, that governmental corruption raises voter turnout rates in gubernatorial …

Optimal Growth Oflactobacillus Casei In A Cheddar Cheese Ripening Model System Requires Exogenous Fatty Acids, W. S. Tan, M. F. Budinich, Robert E. Ward, Jeff Broadbent, J. L. Steele Jan 2012

Optimal Growth Oflactobacillus Casei In A Cheddar Cheese Ripening Model System Requires Exogenous Fatty Acids, W. S. Tan, M. F. Budinich, Robert E. Ward, Jeff Broadbent, J. L. Steele

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Flavor development in ripening Cheddar cheese depends on complex microbial and biochemical processes that are difficult to study in natural cheese. Thus, our group has developed Cheddar cheese extract (CCE) as a model system to study these processes. In previous work, we found that CCE supported growth of Lactobacillus casei, one of the most prominent nonstarter lactic acid bacteria (NSLAB) species found in ripening Cheddar cheese, to a final cell density of 108 cfu/mL at 37°C. However, when similar growth experiments were performed at 8°C in CCE derived from 4-mo-old cheese (4mCCE), the final cell densities obtained were only about …

Unesco, Uri, And Archaeology In The Deep Blue Sea: Archaeological Ethics And Archaeological Oceanography, William H. Krieger, Bridget Buxton Jan 2012

Unesco, Uri, And Archaeology In The Deep Blue Sea: Archaeological Ethics And Archaeological Oceanography, William H. Krieger, Bridget Buxton

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Multiple groups have interests that intersect within the new field of deep submergence (beyond the 50 meter range of SCUBA) archaeology. These groups‟ differing priorities present challenges for interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly as there are no established guidelines for best practices in such scenarios. Associating the term 'archaeology' with projects directed at underwater cultural heritage that are are not guided by archaeologists poses a real risk to that heritage. Recognizing that the relevant professional organizations, local laws, and conventions currently have little ability to protect pieces of cultural heritage across disciplines and international boundaries, the authors propose institution-specific mechanisms, called Archaeology …

Background—CMR typically quantifies LV mass (LVM) via manual planimetry (MP), but this approach is time consuming and does not account for partial voxel components - myocardium admixed with blood in a single voxel. Automated segmentation (AS) can account for partial voxels, but this has not been used for LVM quantification. This study used automated CMR segmentation to test the influence of partial voxels on quantification of LVM. Methods and Results—LVM was quantified by AS and MP in 126 consecutive patients and 10 laboratory animals undergoing CMR. AS yielded both partial voxel (ASPV) and full voxel (ASFV) …

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Background: Augmented input (AI), or the use of visuographic images and linguistic supports, is a strategy for facilitating the auditory comprehension of people with chronic aphasia. To date, researchers have not systematically evaluated the effects of various types of AI strategies on auditory comprehension.

Aims: The purpose of the study was to perform an initial evaluation of the changes in auditory comprehension accuracy experienced by people with aphasia when they received one type of AI. Specifically, the authors examined the effect four types of non-personalized visuographic image conditions on the comprehension of people with aphasia when listening to narratives.

Artificial Devices As A Viable Alternative To The Conventional Heart Transplant, Hadassah Radzik Jan 2012

Artificial Devices As A Viable Alternative To The Conventional Heart Transplant, Hadassah Radzik

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The human heart is one of the most vital organs in the body. It distributes blood throughout the body, providing the body with oxygen and nutrition, and contributes to metabolism. When the heart fails, blood flow is impaired, thereby limiting the exchange of oxygen within the cardiopulmonary system as well as diminishing oxygenation and nutrition to the other major organs and periphery. The only current proven treatment for advanced heart failure is cardiac transplant. Given the heart’s importance and the scarcity of donated organs, modern medicine has experimented with the creation of an artificial heart. Because the heart is primarily …

Neville, R. E. Gresswell, J. B. Dunham, Amanda E. Rosenberger, Michael K. Young

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

Fire will play an important role in shaping forest and stream ecosystems as the climate changes. Historic observations show increased dryness accompanying more widespread fire and forest die-off. These events punctuate gradual changes to ecosystems and sometimes generate stepwise changes in ecosystems. Climate vulnerability assessments need to account for fire in their calculus. The biophysical template of forest and stream ecosystems determines much of their response to fire. This report describes the framework of how fire and climate change work together to affect forest and fish communities. Learning how to adapt will come from testing, probing, and pushing that framework …

The Right To Learn: Intellectual Honesty And The First Amendment, Jeffrey M. Cohen Jan 2012

The Right To Learn: Intellectual Honesty And The First Amendment, Jeffrey M. Cohen

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Science education is one of the most hotly contested issues in public debate. Even after decades of jurisprudence and scholarly analysis, politicians still ignite public passions by suggesting that creationism or intelligent design theory be taught alongside of evolution in public school science classrooms. Despite political rhetoric, the Establishment Clause has been steadfastly used to prevent religion masquerading as science from entering the science classroom. However, public officials have launched attacks recently on other scientific theories, such as climate change, that are not religiously motivated. Students are left in these instances without resort to the Establishment Clause and are potentially …
