By early 1915, the Habsburg Monarchy faced a self-inflicted strategic crisis of the first magnitude. Under thecommand of the ever fallible Conrad von Hötzendorf, successive Austrian offensives against the Serbs andthe Russians in 1914 had been outright failures. In both cases, Conrad had attempted to shift between frontswith insufficient resources and succeeded only in grinding the life out of the fragile, undermanned, andunderequipped Habsburg Army. As a result, the Russians were able to lay siege to the critical Austrian fortificationof Przemyśl, which guarded the great Hungarian Plain against Russian invasion. In reaction, Conradgathered forces to relieve Przemyśl with an offensive …

Nanomaterials And Cellular Interaction In The Nervous System, Caleb Joseph Pingel Jan 2012

Nanomaterials And Cellular Interaction In The Nervous System, Caleb Joseph Pingel

Student Theses and Dissertations

Nanoparticles (NPs), materials fabricated in nanosize, are being increasingly used due to their unique applications. The potential risks from inhaling NPs and the interaction of inhaled NPs with the peripheral nervous system in rat were determined in this study by investigating 1) retrograde transport of inhaled NP's to the Nodose Ganglion (NDG) neurons, 2) NDG neuronal interaction with NPs in vitro, and 3) the fluid kinetics of NPs in cell sustaining media. Intratracheal intubation and instilling fluorescent NPs with and without a tracer dye (SP-DiOC) showed that NPS were transported from nerve endings in airway to neurons. Exposing NDG neurons …

In order to study oxidative stress in peripheral cells of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, immortalized lymphocytes derived from two peculiar cohorts of patients, referring to early onset AD (EOSAD) and subjects harboured AD related mutation (ADmut), were used. Oxidative stress was evaluated measuring i) the typical oxidative markers, such as HNE Michel adducts, 3 Nitro-Tyrosine residues and protein carbonyl on protein extracts, ii) and the antioxidant capacity, following the enzymatic kinetic of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GRD). We found that the signs of oxidative stress, measured as oxidative marker levels, were evident only in ADmut …

The Effect Of Nest Relocation And Beach Renourishment On The Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) In Pinellas County, Florida, Lauren Dellert

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) have major nesting sites along the protected shores of the southeastern United States, an area where the species are listed as either endangered or threatened. In this study, the effects of beach renourishment and nest relocation on the rate of emergence of Loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings from their nests. The study location was the beaches of Pinellas County, Florida; the study period was five years, 2006 through 2010. Because beach renourishment can be environmentally detrimental for sessile organisms such as sponges and coral, we hypothesized that beach renourishment would negatively affect hatchling success of the …

Fantasyscotus: Crowdsourcing A Prediction Market For The Supreme Court, Josh Blackman, Adam Aft, Corey Carpenter

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Every year the Supreme Court of the United States captivates the minds and curiosity of millions of Americans—yet the inner-workings of the Court are not fully transparent. The Court, without explanation, decides only the cases it wishes. They deliberate and assign authorship in private. The Justices hear oral arguments, and without notice, issue an opinion months later. They sometimes offer enigmatic clues during oral arguments through their questions. Between arguments and the day the Court issues an opinion, the outcome of a case is essentially a mystery. Sometimes the outcome falls along predictable lines; other times the outcome is a …

Incorporating Quantitative Reasoning In Common Core Courses: Mathematics For The Ghost Map, John R. Jungck

Numeracy

How can mathematics be integrated into multi-section interdisciplinary courses to enhance thematic understandings and shared common readings? As an example, four forms of quantitative reasoning are used to understand and critique one such common reading: Steven Berlin Johnson’s "The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic - and How it Changed Science, Cities and the Modern World" (Riverhead Books, 2006). Geometry, statistics, modeling, and networks are featured in this essay as the means of depicting, understanding, elaborating, and critiquing the public health issues raised in Johnson’s book. Specific pedagogical examples and resources are included to illustrate applications and …

Hiv-1 Tat Triggers Nuclear Localization Of Zo-1 Via Rho Signaling And Camp Response Element-Binding Protein Activation, Yu Zhong, Bei Zhang, Sung Yong Eum, Michal Toborek

Neurosurgery Faculty Publications

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-specific protein trans-activator of transcription (Tat) can contribute to the dysfunction of brain endothelial cells and HIV trafficking into the brain by disrupting tight junction (TJ) integrity at the blood–brain barrier (BBB) level. Specific TJ proteins, such as zonula occludens (ZO) proteins, localize not only at the cell–cell borders but are also present in the nuclei. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the mechanisms and significance of Tat-induced nuclear localization of ZO-1. Treatment of a brain endothelial cell line (hCMEC/D3 cells) with Tat resulted in a decrease in total levels of ZO-1 but …

Brainstorm: What Humans Can Learn From Monkeys, John J. Medina Ph.D.

Brainstorm

We are exploring the sometimes frustrating, always fascinating distance between genes and behaviors. In this entry, I wish to illustrate a dramatic example of how nature and nurture interact, not by examining humans, but by looking at some genetic nextdoor neighbors of ours — vervet monkeys.

The Distribution, Occupancy, And Habitat Affinities Of Bewick's Wrens (Thryomanes Bewickii Bewickii) In Arkansas, Sarah Grace Thompson

Student Theses and Dissertations

Eastern populations of Bewick's Wrens (Thryomanes bewickii) have declined dramatically within the last century. The cause of the decline is unknown, though loss of early-successional habitat and interspecific interference by House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) are commonly cited hypotheses. In this study, I used broadcast and citizen science surveys to determine the status of Bewick's Wrens in Arkansas. My results combined with those found by the 59 citizen scientists registered for the Arkansas Wren Survey suggest that Bewick's Wrens are functionally extirpated in Arkansas. I determined that Bewick's Wrens occupy open habitat characterized by scattered tall trees with a grassy understory. …

Stable Coexpression Of Vitamin C Enhancing Genes For Improved Production Of A Recombinant Therapeutic Protein, Hil-12, In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Jessica Patricia Yactayo-Chang

Student Theses and Dissertations

Human interleukin-12 (hIL-12) has been studied as a potential therapeutic factor in the immune response against viral disease and cancer. Plants are a promising platform for the production of complex mammalian proteins, as they can produce large amounts of functional polypeptides free of animal pathogens, and protein production can be increased to agricultural scale in a relatively short period of time. The presence of vitamin C (ascorbic acid, AsA) has been reported to have a positive effect on recombinant protein recovery. In a previous study we have demonstrated the favorable impact of the exogenous addition of AsA on the accumulation …

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome And Novel Gene Arrangement Of The Unique-Headed Bug Stenopirates Sp. (Hemiptera: Enicocephalidae), Hu Li, Hui Liu, Aimin Shi, Pavel Stys, Xuguo Zhou, Wanzhi Cai

Entomology Faculty Publications

Many of true bugs are important insect pests to cultivated crops and some are important vectors of human diseases, but few cladistic analyses have addressed relationships among the seven infraorders of Heteroptera. The Enicocephalomorpha and Nepomorpha are consider the basal groups of Heteroptera, but the basal-most lineage remains unresolved. Here we report the mitochondrial genome of the unique-headed bug Stenopirates sp., the first mitochondrial genome sequenced from Enicocephalomorpha. The Stenopirates sp. mitochondrial genome is a typical circular DNA molecule of 15, 384 bp in length, and contains 37 genes and a large non-coding fragment. The gene order differs substantially from …

Mapping Migratory Bird Prevalence Using Remote Sensing Data Fusion, Anu Swatantran, Ralph Dubayah, Scott Goetz, Michelle Hofton, Matthew G. Betts, Mindy Sun, Marc Simard, Richard Holmes

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Improved maps of species distributions are important for effective management of wildlife under increasing anthropogenic pressures. Recent advances in lidar and radar remote sensing have shown considerable potential for mapping forest structure and habitat characteristics across landscapes. However, their relative efficacies and integrated use in habitat mapping remain largely unexplored. We evaluated the use of lidar, radar and multispectral remote sensing data in predicting multi-year bird detections or prevalence for 8 migratory songbird species in the unfragmented temperate deciduous forests of New Hampshire, USA.

Methodology and Principal Findings: A set of 104 predictor variables describing vegetation vertical structure and …

Recombinant Probiotic Expressing Listeria Adhesion Protein Attenuates Listeria Monocytogenes Virulence In Vitro., Ok Kyung Koo, Mary Anne Roshni Amalaradjou, Arun K. Bhunia

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Background

Listeria monocytogenes, an intracellular foodborne pathogen, infects immunocompromised hosts. The primary route of transmission is through contaminated food. In the gastrointestinal tract, it traverses the epithelial barrier through intracellular or paracellular routes. Strategies to prevent L. monocytogenes entry can potentially minimize infection in high-risk populations.Listeria adhesion protein (LAP) aids L. monocytogenes in crossing epithelial barriers via the paracellular route. The use of recombinant probiotic bacteria expressing LAP would aid targeted clearance of Listeria from the gut and protect high-risk populations from infection.

Methodology/Principal Findings

The objective was to investigate the ability of probiotic bacteria or LAP-expressing recombinant …

Identification Of Membrane-Bound Variant Of Metalloendopeptidase Neurolysin (Ec 3.4.24.16) As The Non-Angiotensin Type 1 (Non-At1), Non-At2 Angiotensin Binding Site, Naomi J. Wangler, Kira L. Santos, Ines Schadock, Fred K. Hagen, Emanuel Escher, Michael Bader, Robert C. Speth, Vardan T. Karamyan

HPD Articles

Recently, we discovered a novel non-angiotensin type 1 (non-AT1), non-AT2 angiotensin binding site in rodent and human brain membranes, which is distinctly different from angiotensin receptors and key proteases processing angiotensins. It is hypothesized to be a new member of the renin-angiotensin system. This study was designed to isolate and identify this novel angiotensin binding site. An angiotensin analog, photoaffinity probe 125I-SBpa-Ang II, was used to specifically label the non-AT1, non-AT2 angiotensin binding site in mouse forebrain membranes, followed by a two-step purification procedure based on the molecular size and isoelectric point of the photoradiolabeled binding protein. Purified samples were …
