Relationship Between Fat Content And Ne Values For Some Ethanol Byproducts, R. Pritchard, E. Loe, T. Milton

South Dakota Beef Report, 2012

A finishing phase study was conducted to measure the impact of the fat content of ethanol byproducts on the relative Net Energy values for these feedstuffs. The three feedstuffs with varying crude fat content used included a commercially available corn gluten feed corn distillers grains blend (CGD); a corn wet distillers grains without solubles (WDG); and corn wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS). Byproducts were incorporated as 40% of the finishing diets (DM basis) replacing corn and SBM components of the control (CO) diet. There were 6 pens of 7 or 8 yearling steers on each treatment during the 130 …

An equine SNP genotyping array was developed and evaluated on a panel of samples representing 14 domestic horse breeds and 18 evolutionarily related species. More than 54,000 polymorphic SNPs provided an average inter-SNP spacing of ∼43 kb. The mean minor allele frequency across domestic horse breeds was 0.23, and the number of polymorphic SNPs within breeds ranged from 43,287 to 52,085. Genome-wide linkage disequilibrium (LD) in most breeds declined rapidly over the first 50-100 kb and reached background levels within 1-2 Mb. The extent of LD and the level of inbreeding were highest in the Thoroughbred and lowest in the …

Investigating The Spectrum Of Biological Activity Of Substituted Quinoline-2-Carboxamides And Their Isosteres, Jiahui Guo, Et. Al.

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

In this study, a series of thirty-five substituted quinoline-2-carboxamides and thirty-three substituted naphthalene-2-carboxamides were prepared and characterized. They were tested for their activity related to the inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport (PET) in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts. Primary in vitro screening of the synthesized compounds was also performed against four mycobacterial species. N-Cycloheptylquinoline-2-carboxamide, N-cyclohexylquinoline-2-carboxamide and N-(2-phenylethyl)quinoline-2-carboxamide showed higher activity against M. tuberculosis than the standards isoniazid or pyrazinamide and 2-(pyrrolidin-1-ylcarbonyl)quinoline and 1-(2-naphthoyl)pyrrolidine expressed higher activity against M. kansasii and M. avium paratuberculosis than the standards isoniazid or pyrazinamide. The most effective antimycobacterial compounds demonstrated insignificant toxicity against the human …

Inflammatory Signaling Compromises Cell Responses To Interferon Alpha., W-C Huangfu, J Qian, C Liu, J Liu, A E Lokshin, D P Baker, H Rui, S Y Fuchs

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Interferon alpha (IFNα) is widely used for treatment of melanoma and certain other malignancies. This cytokine as well as the related IFNβ exerts potent anti-tumorigenic effects; however, their efficacy in patients is often suboptimal. Here, we report that inflammatory signaling impedes the effects of IFNα/β. Melanoma cells can secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines that inhibit cellular responses to IFNα/β via activating the ligand-independent pathway for the phosphorylation and subsequent ubiquitination and accelerated degradation of the IFNAR1 chain of type I IFN receptor. Catalytic activity of the p38 protein kinase was required for IFNAR1 downregulation and inhibition of IFNα/β signaling induced by proinflammatory …

The Social Production Of Substance Abuse And Hiv/Hcv Risk: An Exploratory Study Of Opioid-Using Immigrants From The Former Soviet Union Living In New York City, Honoria Guarino, Sarah K. Moore, Lisa A. Marsch, Sal Florio

Dartmouth Scholarship

Several former Soviet countries have witnessed the rapid emergence of major epidemics of injection drug use (IDU) and associated HIV/HCV, suggesting that immigrants from the former Soviet Union (FSU) may be at heightened risk for similar problems. This exploratory study examines substance use patterns among the understudied population of opioid-using FSU immigrants in the U.S., as well as social contextual factors that may increase these immigrants' susceptibility to opioid abuse and HIV/HCV infection. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 FSU immigrants living in New York City who initiated opioid use in adolescence or young adulthood, and with 6 drug treatment …

Gabapentin In The Treatment Of Bipolar Disorder, Wendy M. Waits, Donald P. Hall Jr., M.D. Jan 2012

Gabapentin In The Treatment Of Bipolar Disorder, Wendy M. Waits, Donald P. Hall Jr., M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Gabapentin, a relatively new anti-epileptic drug (AED), is emerging as a therapeutic option for treatment refractory and rapid-cycling bipolar illnesses. Pharmacotherapy for bipolar disorders traditionally involves valproate, carbamazapine, or lithium, drugs which are associated with numerous adverse effects. Conversely, gabapentin has an attractive pharmacokinetics profile and relatively few side effects. There are no large randomized controlled clinical trials to date examining gabapentin’s role in mood stabilization. However, informal reports have cited encouraging results in up to 80% of patients and general tolerance to side effects. These findings make the new drug a possible choice for patients who have failed to …

Gal-On V. Attorney General (Summary), Eliezer Rivlin, Asher Grunis, Miriam Naor, Elyakim Rubinstein, Hanan Melcer, Neal Hendel, Dorit Beinisch, Edmond E. Levy, Edna Arbel, Salim Joubran, Esther Hayut

Translated Opinions

By a majority of six justices out of a panel of eleven, the High Court of Justice rejected petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Citizenship and Entry to Israel Act. The majority justices acknowledged there was a constitutional right for family life, which derives from the right to human dignity, but held that the scope of the right does not extend to realizing the right specifically in Israel. It was also held that to the extent that constitutional rights have been violated, including the right to equality, it is a violation that passes muster under the test of the Limitations …

Philopatry Drives Genetic Differentiation In An Island Archipelago: Comparative Population Genetics Of Galapagos Nazca Boobies (Sula Granti) And Great Frigatebirds (Fregata Minor), Iris Levin, Patricia Parker Jan 2012

Philopatry Drives Genetic Differentiation In An Island Archipelago: Comparative Population Genetics Of Galapagos Nazca Boobies (Sula Granti) And Great Frigatebirds (Fregata Minor), Iris Levin, Patricia Parker

Biology Department Faculty Works

Seabirds are considered highly mobile, able to fly great distances with few apparent barriers to dispersal. However, it is often the case that seabird populations exhibit strong population genetic structure despite their potential vagility. Here we show that Galapagos Nazca booby (Sula granti) populations are substantially differentiated, even within the small geographic scale of this archipelago. On the other hand, Galapagos great frigatebird (Fregata minor) populations do not show any genetic structure. We characterized the genetic differentiation by sampling five colonies of both species in the Galapagos archipelago and analyzing eight microsatellite loci and three mitochondrial genes. Using an F‐statistic …

Ecological Guild Evolution And The Discovery Of The World's Smallest Vertebrate, Eric N. Rittmeyer, Allen Allison, Michael C. Gründler, Derrick K. Thompson, Christopher C. Austin

Faculty Publications

Living vertebrates vary drastically in body size, yet few taxa reach the extremely minute size of some frogs and teleost fish. Here we describe two new species of diminutive terrestrial frogs from the megadiverse hotspot island of New Guinea, one of which represents the smallest known vertebrate species, attaining an average body size of only 7.7 mm. Both new species are members of the recently described genus Paedophryne, the four species of which are all among the ten smallest known frog species, making Paedophryne the most diminutive genus of anurans. This discovery highlights intriguing ecological similarities among the numerous independent …

Failed Exactions, Mark Fenster Jan 2012

Failed Exactions, Mark Fenster

UF Law Faculty Publications

This symposium essay considers the doctrinal quandary created by 'failed exactions' - regulatory conditions on property development that government agencies contemplate but that are never finalized or enforced, usually because the property owner rejects them. A narrow but conceptually challenging issue to the relationship between the unconstitutional conditions doctrine and regulatory takings law, failed exactions could prove profoundly unsettling to current land use practices. A decade ago, the issue of whether failed exactions deserve heightened scrutiny prompted Justice Scalia to issue a dissent from a denial of petition for certiorari in which he stated, somewhat tentatively, that an extortionate demand …

Purpose: Taking up a global leadership role by providing hands-on nursing on international medical missions, inspires one to enhance giving and leading to yet another level. It is proposed that research incorporated into nursing science be shared with our healthcare colleagues in the Philippines and Ukraine. The purpose of this research is to prepare brief assessment tools for use in global populations. Assessment tools have provided valuable insights into our patients' health outcomes following nursing interventions, and in uncovering underlying reasons for complex symptomology. The KOCI Marginality Index-5 assesses marginality that is significantly positively correlated with anxiety and depression. Additionally, …

Reiki: A Complementary, Biofield Therapy For Management Of Postoperative Pain, Robin Toms Jan 2012

Reiki: A Complementary, Biofield Therapy For Management Of Postoperative Pain, Robin Toms

Biennial Convention (CONV)

There is increasing interest in complementary and alternative therapies that do not rely on expensive, invasive technology, and are holistic in focus. Such therapies could improve pain management in the poorest of countries globally. Research has shown the benefits of combining conventional, Western, pain management with CAM (Olson, 2003; Gillespie, 2007; Olson, 2003; Vitale, 2006 ;). Reiki, a complementary therapy, is a form of energy therapy in which the focus of the practitioner, with or without light touch, is believed to access universal energy sources that can assist in balancing the biofield and strengthening the body's ability to heal itself …
