Department of Animal Sciences Faculty Publications

Limb girdle muscular dystrophy type 2H (LGMD2H) is an inherited autosomal recessive disease of skeletal muscle caused by a mutation in the TRIM32 gene. Currently its pathogenesis is entirely unclear. Typically the regeneration process of adult skeletal muscle during growth or following injury is controlled by a tissue specific stem cell population termed satellite cells. Given that TRIM32 regulates the fate of mammalian neural progenitor cells through controlling their differentiation, we asked whether TRIM32 could also be essential for the regulation of myogenic stem cells. Here we demonstrate for the first time that TRIM32 is expressed in the skeletal muscle …

Update On Osteonecrosis Related To Bisphosphonates: A Report Of Three Clinical Cases, Edgard Nehmé, Nadim Khoueir, Jeanine Hoyek Gebeily

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

The publications issued since 2003 on osteonecrosis related to oral and / or iv bisphosphonates (BsP) lend a controversy. The recommendations and guidelines from senior scientific authorities reviewed and updated in 2009 by the task force of the AAOMS, define patients in terms of risk and determine practically the prophylactic acts and the limits of operative oral and dental procedures. In these serial clinical cases, we report and discuss three situations with different therapeutic approaches and management.

Differences Between Post-Bariatric Patients And Controls In A Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program: Implications For Treatment, Ashley A. Wiedemann Jan 2012

Differences Between Post-Bariatric Patients And Controls In A Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program: Implications For Treatment, Ashley A. Wiedemann

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A comprehensive substance abuse treatment facility began observing increased admissions who reported histories of bariatric surgeries. The present study examined what unique variables may pose risk for substance abuse among bariatric surgery candidates and what issues may affect prognosis or treatment outcome for those currently in substance abuse treatment. Participants completed a questionnaire and participated in a semi-structured interview. Results indicate that post-bariatric patients developed problematic substance use significantly later in life, during a time that is not normative of new development of substances; were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with alcohol use disorders; and reported a significantly poorer …

Chemistry And Behavioral Studies Identify Chiral Cyclopropanes As Selective α4β2-Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Partial Agonists Exhibiting An Antidepressant Profile, Hankun Zhang, Werner Tuckmantel, J. Brek Eaton, Po Wai Yuen, Li Fang Yu, Krishna Mohan Bajjuri, Allison Fedolak, Daguang Wang, Afshin Ghavami, Barbara Caldarone, Neil E. Paterson, David A. Lowe, Daniela Brunner, Ronald J. Lukas

Translational Neuroscience

Despite their discovery in the early 20th century and intensive study over the last 20 years, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are still far from being well understood. Only a few chemical entities targeting nAChRs are currently undergoing clinical trials, and even fewer have reached the marketplace. In our efforts to discover novel and truly selective nAChR ligands, we designed and synthesized a series of chiral cyclopropane-containing α4β2-specific ligands that display low nanomolar binding affinities and excellent subtype selectivity while acting as partial agonists at α4β2-nAChRs. Their favorable antidepressant-like properties were demonstrated in the classical mouse forced swim test. Preliminary ADMET …

Identification Of Novel α4β2-Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor (Nachr) Agonists Based On An Isoxazole Ether Scaffold That Demonstrate Antidepressant-Like Activity, Li Fang Yu, Werner Tuckmantel, J. Brek Eaton, Barbara Caldarone, Allison Fedolak, Taleen Hanania, Dani Brunner, Ronald J. Lukas, Alan P. Kozikowski

Translational Neuroscience

There is considerable evidence to support the hypothesis that the blockade of nAChR is responsible for the antidepressant action of nicotinic ligands. The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) antagonist, mecamylamine, has been shown to be an effective add-on in patients that do not respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. This suggests that nAChR ligands may address an unmet clinical need by providing relief from depressive symptoms in refractory patients. In this study, a new series of nAChR ligands based on an isoxazole-ether scaffold have been designed and synthesized for binding and functional assays. Preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) efforts identified a lead …

Animals On The Borderline: The Horse Slaughter Controversy, Jenny Vermilya Ph.D. Jan 2012

Animals On The Borderline: The Horse Slaughter Controversy, Jenny Vermilya Ph.D.

Herzog - Animal policy and attitudes

Horses occupy a liminal area between "pet" and livestock and hence, the controversy over horse slaughter. The disposal of dead horses is challenging and expensive and abolition of horse slaughter has led, according to some sources, an increase in horse neglect and suffering.

Revisiting 3d Stereo Satellite Image Displays, Frederick R. Mosher

Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach

Over 30 years ago, there were a number of development efforts to display 3D stereo satellite images and associated weather. Dr. Fritz Hasler showed how the GOES-east and west satellites could be remapped to generate true stereo pairs for obtaining cloud heights and he also showed how artificial stereo images could be generated using derived IR cloud heights to generate parallax shifts for the visible or infrared images. While there was a flurry of interest in the 1980s, the techniques had largely fallen from routine usage until recently. However, technology advances in both satellites and display technology has allowed for …

Modeling And Simulation Of Cpu Mechanisms For Providing Operating System Support For Mobile Multimedia Systems, Abbas Khlaf Abd Al Muhsen Jan 2012

Modeling And Simulation Of Cpu Mechanisms For Providing Operating System Support For Mobile Multimedia Systems, Abbas Khlaf Abd Al Muhsen

Theses and Dissertations

In the ever-increasing digital world, mobile devices, such as smart-phones and tablet computers are on the trend to become the most used electronic devices. Multimedia applications running on these devices require appropriate operating system support. One limitation of the capabilities of these devices comes from their power source: they are all battery-powered, with a restricted battery energy budget. An important part of the total power is used by the CPU of these devices, so by controlling the power consumed by the CPU, the overall power used by the mobile device will be significantly reduced. This work proposes a systems engineering …

The Role Of Tumor Suppressors, Ship And Rb, In Immune Suppressive Cells, Michelle Marie Collazo Ruiz Jan 2012

The Role Of Tumor Suppressors, Ship And Rb, In Immune Suppressive Cells, Michelle Marie Collazo Ruiz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) have been extensively studied in the past 30-40 years. Their potent suppressive capacity shown in several pathological and clinical settings, such as cancer and transplantation, has made it evident that better understanding their development and function is critical.

Specifically, Tregs play a pivotal role in preventing autoimmunity, graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), and organ graft rejection. We previously demonstrated that germline or induced SH2 domain-containing inositol 5-phosphatase (SHIP) deficiency in the host abrogates GvHD. Here we show that SHIP-deficiency promotes an increase of FoxP3+ cells in both the CD4+CD25+ and the CD4+CD25- T …
