Senior Capstone Project Final Research Report : Breastfeeding Friendly Businesses, Jazmin Meza Jan 2011

Senior Capstone Project Final Research Report : Breastfeeding Friendly Businesses, Jazmin Meza

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

As a Women Infants and Children agency Intern, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Salinas Business Union Association to pilot local business owners into finding ways to becoming breastfeeding friendly. Owners were given an educational brochure regarding breastfeeding laws, lactation accommodation and creation of breastfeeding friendly environments for current and future mother employees as well as clients. A breastfeeding friendly logo was also created to be posted on businesses windows to show the community of Salinas their support of breastfeeding. The main goal of this project was to raise awareness about the importance and acceptance of breastfeeding, as well …

Career Locker For At-Risk Youth, Roberto Garcia

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

While interning for the Santa Cruz Probation Department-Juvenile Division, during my Fall 2010 to Spring 2011semesters, I was able to offer an on-line career planning tool program for at-risk youth. The goal of the Career Locker program was to increase school bonding, and career school interest to decrease juvenile delinquency in Santa Cruz County. The Career Locker consisted of assessing the youth’s career interests to match those interests to a specific career, so that youth could explore different educational institutions that offered preparation for their desired career.

Succinct yet insightful reports are most welcome – especially in our era, distracted as it is by a rising tide of shallow commentary. For those who care about foreign direct investment (FDI), the premier reports are Columbia FDI Perspectives, published every few weeks by the Vale Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment. Since the first issue (here republished as chapter 2) appeared in November 2008, the Perspectives have adhered to a format of about two pages, authored by a leading expert, on an FDI question of immediate interest. Consequently, there is no better way to keep abreast of changing trends …

Drafting In Doha: An Assessment Of The Darfur Peace Process And Ceasefire Agreements, Paul Williams Jan 2011

Drafting In Doha: An Assessment Of The Darfur Peace Process And Ceasefire Agreements, Paul Williams

Contributions to Books

In the spring of 2010, in Doha, Qatar, the major parties to the Darfur conflict signed a series of framework and ceasefire agreements. The Doha Agreements comprise the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Framework, the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) Framework, and the LJM Ceasefire Agreements. These accords served two principal purposes. The first and more obvious was to establish a cessation of hostilities and lay the foundation for the negotiation of a comprehensive peace agreement. Critical to each are provisions relating to Security Sector Reform (SSR) and the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) of combatants. Well drafted SSR and …

Intelligent Buildings: An Investigation Into Current And Emerging Security Vulnerabilities In Automated Building Systems Using An Applied Defeat Methodology, David J. Brooks Jan 2011

Intelligent Buildings: An Investigation Into Current And Emerging Security Vulnerabilities In Automated Building Systems Using An Applied Defeat Methodology, David J. Brooks

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

Intelligent Buildings (IB) have become increasing popular during the past decade, driven through the need to reduce energy, have more reactive and safer buildings, and increase productivity. IB integrate many systems that were in the past isolated from each other, including fire and life safety, HVAC, lighting, security, etc. Facilities contain commercial-in-confidence material and other valued assets; however, IB are integrated through open and common data communication protocols and hardware, leaving facilities exposed to external and internal threats. The study presents an investigation into IB, based on a defeat evaluation methdology. IB vulnerabilities considered two areas, namely physical and software …

Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer Jan 2011

Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

A central focus of intelligence is the identification, analysis and assessment of threat. However, as acknowledged by intelligence practitioners, threat assessment lags behind the related field of risk assessment. This paper highlights how definitions of threat currently favoured by intelligence agencies are primarily based on threatening entities alone. Consequently, assessments of threat are almost singularly concerned with understanding an identified enemy’s intentions and capabilities. This ‘enemy-centric’ approach to intelligence analysis has recently come in for criticism. In particular, the shortcomings of the current approach become apparent where the focus of intelligence analysis is on threats from difficult-to-identify sub-state or non-state …

From ‘Entrepreneur Of The Self’ To ‘Care Of The Self’: Neo-Liberal Governmentality And Foucault’S Ethics, Andrew Dilts Jan 2011

From ‘Entrepreneur Of The Self’ To ‘Care Of The Self’: Neo-Liberal Governmentality And Foucault’S Ethics, Andrew Dilts

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

In his 1979 lectures, Foucault took particular interest in the reconfiguration of quotidian practices under neo-liberal human capital theory, re-describing all persons as entrepreneurs of the self. By the early 1980s, Foucault had begun to articulate a theory of ethical conduct driven not by the logic of investment, but of artistic development and self-care. This article uses Foucault’s account of human capital as a basis to explore the meaning and limits of Foucault’s final published works and argues for two interrelated genealogical projects focused on the ethics of economic activity.

Identifying Factors That Increase The Likelihood For Alcohol-Induced Blackouts In The Prepartying Context, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Shannon Kenney, Andrew Lac, Eric Pedersen Jan 2011

Identifying Factors That Increase The Likelihood For Alcohol-Induced Blackouts In The Prepartying Context, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Shannon Kenney, Andrew Lac, Eric Pedersen

Heads Up!

The present study examined risk factors related to “blacking out” (e.g., temporary periods of memory loss during drinking) during preparty drinking events (i.e., pregaming, predrinking). Participants were students from two universities on the West Coast who reported past month prepartying (N = 2,546) in online surveys administered in the fall of 2008. Among these students, 25% (n = 636) reported blacking out during at least one occasion in which they prepartied in the past month. A logistic regression model underscored that Greek student affiliation, family history of alcohol abuse, frequency of prepartying, and both playing drinking games and …

Heads Up!

Objective:

Perceived descriptive drinking norms often differ from actual norms and are positively related to personal consumption. However, it is not clear how normative perceptions vary with specificity of the reference group. Are drinking norms more accurate and more closely related to drinking behavior as reference group specificity increases? Do these relationships vary as a function of participant demographics? The present study examined the relationship between perceived descriptive norms and drinking behavior by ethnicity (Asian or White), sex, and fraternity/sorority status.

Method:

Participants were 2,699 (58% female) White (75%) or Asian (25%) undergraduates from two universities who reported their own …

Testing A Model Of Minority Identity Achievement, Identity Affirmation And Psychological Well-Being Among Ethnic Minority And Sexual Minority Individuals, Negin Ghavami, Adam W. Fingerhut, Letitia A. Peplau, Sheila K. Grant, Michele A. Wittig Jan 2011

Wittig

Psychological Science Faculty Works

How is social identity related to psychological well-being among minority individuals? Drawing on developmental models of identity formation (e.g., Erikson, 1968) and on Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979), we tested a conceptual model examining links between two key aspects of social identity and psychological well-being. We proposed that the association between identity achievement (exploring and understanding the meaning of one's identity) and psychological well-being is mediated by identity affirmation (developing positive feelings and a sense of belonging to one's social group). Across three studies, including ethnic minority high school students (Study 1), ethnic minority college students (Study 2) …

Ovarian Hormones, Aging And Stress On Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity, Michael R. Foy Jan 2011

Ovarian Hormones, Aging And Stress On Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity, Michael R. Foy

Psychological Science Faculty Works

The ovarian steroid hormones estradiol and progesterone regulate a wide variety of non-reproductive functions in the central nervous system by interacting with molecular and cellular processes. A growing literature from studies using rodent models suggests that 17β-estradiol, the most potent of the biologically relevant estrogens, enhances synaptic transmission and the magnitude of long-term potentiation recorded from in vitro hippocampal slices. In contrast, progesterone has been shown to decrease synaptic transmission and reduce hippocampal long-term potentiation in this model system. Hippocampal long-term depression, another form of synaptic plasticity, occurs more prominently in slices from aged rats. A decrease in long-term potentiation …

Displaced In The Simulacrum: Migrant Workers And Urban Space In The World, Yanjie Wang Jan 2011

Displaced In The Simulacrum: Migrant Workers And Urban Space In The World, Yanjie Wang

Asian and Asian American Studies Faculty Works

The article examines the construction of the World Expo Garden in Shanghai in 2010, in relation to Jia Zhangke’s 2004 film The World. It argues that during the process of large-scale demolition and reconstruction involved in the creation of the World Expo Garden, one cannot ignore the numerous migrant workers who swarmed into the city and contributed tremendously to the completion of one project after another. This article argues that in spite of their pivotal role in providing cheap labor to rebuild the city, migrant workers have not been afforded any space in the spectacular tapestry of Shanghai. This article …

Robustness, Weak Stability, And Stability In Distribution Of Adaptive Filteringalgorithms Under Model Mismatch, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, G. Yin, Le Yi Wang Jan 2011

Robustness, Weak Stability, And Stability In Distribution Of Adaptive Filteringalgorithms Under Model Mismatch, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, G. Yin, Le Yi Wang

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This work is concerned with robustness, convergence, and stability of adaptive filtering (AF) type algorithms in the presence of model mismatch. The algorithms under consideration are recursive and have inherent multiscale structure. They can be considered as dynamic systems, in which the `state' changes much more slowly than the perturbing noise. Beyond the existing results on adaptive algorithms, model mismatch significantly affects convergence properties of AF algorithms, raising issues of algorithm robustness. Weak convergence and weak stability (i.e., recurrence) under model mismatch are derived. Based on the limiting stochastic differential equations of suitably scaled iterates, stability in distribution is established. …

Heavy Episodic Drinking On College Campuses: Does Changing The Legal Drinking Age Make A Difference?, Jawaid W. Rasul, Robert G. Rommel, Geoffrey M. Jacquez, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, Azmy S. Ackleh, Neal Simonsen, Richard Scribner Jan 2011

Heavy Episodic Drinking On College Campuses: Does Changing The Legal Drinking Age Make A Difference?, Jawaid W. Rasul, Robert G. Rommel, Geoffrey M. Jacquez, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, Azmy S. Ackleh, Neal Simonsen, Richard Scribner

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This article extends the compartmental model previously developed by Scribner et al. in the context of college drinking to a mathematical model of the consequences of lowering the legal drinking age. Method: Using data available from 32 U.S. campuses, the analyses separate underage and legal age drinking groups into an eight-compartment model with different alcohol availability (wetness) for the underage and legal age groups. The model evaluates the likelihood that underage students will incorrectly perceive normative drinking levels to be higher than they actually are (i.e., misperception) and adjust their drinking accordingly by varying the interaction between underage students in …

Finitely 1-Convex F-Rings, Suzanne Larson Jan 2011

Finitely 1-Convex F-Rings, Suzanne Larson

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

This paper investigates f-rings that can be constructed in a finite number of steps where every step consists of taking the fibre product of two f-rings, both being either a 1-convex f-ring or a fibre product obtained in an earlier step of the construction. These are the f-rings that satisfy the algebraic property that rings of continuous functions possess when the underlying topological space is finitely an F-space (i.e. has a Stone-čech compactification that is a finite union of compact F-spaces). These f-rings are shown to be SV f-rings with bounded inversion and finite rank and, when constructed from semisimple …

Applicability Of Nanofluids In High Flux Solar Collectors, R. A. Taylor, P. E. Phelan, Todd Otanicar, C. A. Walker, M. Nguyen, S. Trimble, R. Prasher

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

Concentrated solar energy has become the input for an increasing number of experimental and commercial thermal systems over the past 10-15 years [M. Thirugnanasambandam et al., Renewable Sustainable Energy Rev. 14 (2010)]. Recent papers have indicated that the addition of nanoparticles to conventional working fluids (i.e., nanofluids) can improve heat transfer and solar collection [H. Tyagi et al., J. Sol. Energy Eng. 131, 4 (2009); P. E. Phelan et al., Annu. Rev. Heat Transfer 14 (2005)]. This work indicates that power tower solar collectors could benefit from the potential efficiency improvements that arise from using a nanofluid working fluid. A …
