Over the last decade, small noncoding RNA molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical regulators in the expression and function of eukaryotic genomes. It has been suggested that viral infections and neurological disease outcome may also be shaped by the influence of small RNAs. This has prompted us to suggest that HIV infection alters the endogenous miRNA expression patterns, thereby contributing to neuronal deregulation and AIDS dementia. Therefore, using primary cultures and neuronal cell lines, we examined the impact of a viral protein (HIV-1 Tat) on the expression of miRNAs due to its characteristic features such as release …

The development of male hormonal contraception is based on a decrease in sperm concentration without affecting libido and sexual potency. The combination of depot medroxy progesterone acetate (DMPA) + extract of Javanese long pepper (JLP) with dosages of 0.94 mg and 1.88 mg decreases the concentration of spermatozoa. However, it remains unknown whether the combination influences body weight, hematology, and blood biochemistry. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of DMPA + JLP extracts on the body weight, hematology, and blood biochemistry of male rats (Rattusnorvegicus L.) using Sprague-Dawley strains. The research uses a completely randomized design (CRD); one …

Dietary Food Fortified With Orotic Acid And Liver Function, Yohanes Buang
Makara Journal of Science
The effects of dietary food fortified with orotic acid (1.0%) on liver function were studied in rats. The rats fed with orotic acid promoted liver triglyceride content markedly, that was 5-fold higher than that of the control. The liver malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased by 10%, but the gluthation peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity decreased by 50%. The serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities increased by 25% and 30%, respectively. Therefore, the decreased GSH-Px activity was associated with the promotions of AST, ALT, and the liver MDA levels. In conclusion: dietary orotic acid promotes lipid peroxidation but reduces the rate …

Amorphous GaInZnO (GIZO) thin films are grown on SiO2/Si substrate by the RF magnetron sputtering method. By the combination of measured band gaps from reflection energy loss spectroscopy (REELS) spectra and valence band from X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra, we have demonstrated the energy band alignment of GIZO thin films. The band gap values are 3.2 eV, 3.2 eV, 3.4eV and 3.6eV for the concentration ratios of Ga: In: Zn in GIZO thin films are 1:1:1, 2:2:1, 3:2:1 and 4:2:1, respectively. These are attributed to the larger band gap energy of Ga2O3 compared with In2O3 and ZnO. The valence band …

Three types of cyclopentanone derivatives have been synthesized from aromatic aldehyde and ketone derivatives under a base condition through aldol condensation. These cyclopentanone products were 2,5-dibenzylidene-cyclopentanone (a), 2,5-bis-(4-hydroxy-benzylidene)-cyclopentanone (b), and 2,5-bis-(4-hydroxy-benzylidene)-cyclopentanone (c) which has a yield of 63-99%. The chemical structure of these compounds were determined using UV, IR and NMR spectroscopy. In order to clarify the role of hydroxyl and amine moieties, toxic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were carried out. The toxic test indicated that the compounds showed strong toxicity. In addition, the presence of hydroxyl and amine groups on both rings of curcumin increased the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory …

Actin is a major component of the plant cytoskeleton, so all cells contain this protein. Actin is expressed constitutively and is involved in basic housekeeping functions required for cell maintenance. Because of this, it has been frequently used as an internal control to normalize changes in gene expressions analysis. Actually, the information of nucleotide sequence of actin gene of Jatropha curcas L. population IP-2P from Indonesia is not available yet. The objective of this research was to isolate, clone and characterize cDNA of actin genes of J. curcas IP-2P. Three partial actin gene sequences had been successfully isolated by PCR …

Correction Of The Ground State Energy Of One-Dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii Equation With Gain-Loss Term, Teguh Budi Prayitno
Makara Journal of Science
We consider the correction of ground state energy of one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation by adding a gain-loss term as a time-dependent external potential. The interesting purpose of this term is that it can be used to explain the experimental results especially in the nonlinear fiber optics regarding the pulse propagation and collapse-revival of the condensate in the Bose-Einstein condensation. In the Bose-Einstein condensation itself, the function can represent that condensate can interact with the normal atomic cloud. Some analytical solutions have been obtained by choosing an ansatz solution of the wave function and its solution can be dark or bright soliton. …

Effects Of Neutrino Electromagnetic Form Factors On Neutrino Interaction With Finite Temperature Electron Matter, Listiana Satiawati, Anto Sulaksono
Makara Journal of Science
The differential cross-section of neutrino interaction with dense and warm electron gasses has been calculated by taking into account the neutrino electromagnetic form factors. The significant effect of electromagnetic properties of neutrino can be found if the neutrino dipole moment, μ ν , is ≥ 5.10-9 μB and neutrino charge radius, Rv, is ≥ 5.10-6 MeV-1. The importance of the retarded correction, detailed balance and Pauli blocking factors is shown and analyzed. Many-body effects on the target matter which are included via random phase approximation (RPA) correlation as well as photon effective mass are also investigated.

I seek simplicity through my intention to establish a particular beauty, a certain calm achieved both visually and through the intangible feel of my furniture - itself simply a reservoir for the collection and ordering of possessions. The result will reflect the balance between the order inherent in the modest furniture forms that follow function and the emphasized personal quality of certain components of the whole. Through exercising restraint in form, the central element is emphasized, thereby omitting the unimportant to magnify the important. I chase an elusive beauty and an ethereal quality in my furniture. I intend to explore …

The aim of this investigation is to assess the correlation among different competencies-assessment systems available on the market to measure social skills in the university environment. In order to carry out the research, three self-perception competency tests were used, and 30 competencies were evaluated in a Likert scale with several response levels: the LPA-Q, the ESCI-U, and the CompeUEM. The three questionnaires were completed by 57 university students. The results show a low degree of agreement among the different questionnaires in relation to measuring the same competencies, as well as an unclear factor structure.

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
As I mentioned last week, I left Fort Snelling after our tour as part of the National Association for Interpretation annual conference unfulfilled. The potential for high-drama and deeply meaningful connections was palpable on that landscape. The audience, a crowd of interpreters, were begging for meanings. One African American woman in the group, after the site administrator mentioned in passing Dred and Harriet Scott being held at the site, asked about the nature of the labor used to build the fort. I was sitting in the row behind her. I could not see her face. But from the inflection in …
