Affording Emerging Adulthood: Parental Financial Assistance Of Their College-Aged Children, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Larry J. Nelson, Jason S. Carroll Nov 2011

Affording Emerging Adulthood: Parental Financial Assistance Of Their College-Aged Children, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Larry J. Nelson, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine parents’ attitudes about and patterns of providing financial assistance to their children during college, and how varying levels of parental financial support were related to children’s beliefs (e.g., perceptions of adulthood), behaviors (e.g., work hours, drinking, and drug use), and identity development. The sample consisted of 402 undergraduate students (62% women) recruited from four college sites across the United States (M age = 19.89), and one of their parents (310 mothers and 92 fathers). Using cluster analysis, results suggested four distinct approaches to parental financial involvement and found that emerging adults’ …

Planning Combinatorial Disulfide Cross-Links For Protein Fold Determination, Fei Xiong, Alan M Friedman, Chris Bailey-Kellogg Nov 2011

Planning Combinatorial Disulfide Cross-Links For Protein Fold Determination, Fei Xiong, Alan M Friedman, Chris Bailey-Kellogg

Dartmouth Scholarship

Fold recognition techniques take advantage of the limited number of overall structural organizations, and have become increasingly effective at identifying the fold of a given target sequence. However, in the absence of sufficient sequence identity, it remains difficult for fold recognition methods to always select the correct model. While a native-like model is often among a pool of highly ranked models, it is not necessarily the highest-ranked one, and the model rankings depend sensitively on the scoring function used. Structure elucidation methods can then be employed to decide among the models based on relatively rapid biochemical/biophysical experiments.

Partnering With Parents: Promising Approaches To Improve Reunification Outcomes For Children In Foster Care, J D. Berrick, Edward Cohen, Elizabeth Anthony Nov 2011

Partnering With Parents: Promising Approaches To Improve Reunification Outcomes For Children In Foster Care, J D. Berrick, Edward Cohen, Elizabeth Anthony

Journal of Family Strengths

Family reunification is one of the central tenents of the child welfare system, yet research supporting effective practices to promote safe reunifications is limited. As a departure from previous initiatives, the Parent Partner (PP) program enlists as staff mothers and fathers who have experienced child removal, services, and reunification. This study examines outcomes for children served by the PP program. The experimental group includes 236 children whose parents were served by a Parent Partner and a matched comparison group of 55 children whose parents were served by the public child welfare agency in 2004, before the Parent Partner program was …

Practitioners' Views Of Family Strengths: A Delphi Study, Kathleen Romero, Jessica Crowder, Kenneth Wedel

Journal of Family Strengths

Reported is a research study to assess the opinions of family practitioners on the status of families in Oklahoma. Researchers employed the Delphi method to achieve consensus among key informants in the family practice field about the strengths and weaknesses of Oklahoma families, threats facing families in the state, and means to strengthening family life in Oklahoma. The study yielded qualitative data from the key informants, which the researchers then condensed into response categories to feed back to informants to rate. Family practitioners identified resilience, spirituality, and access to support systems as the greatest strengths, and listed substance abuse, poverty, …

Low-Income Fathers’ Barriers To Participation In Family And Parenting Programs, Shawna J. Lee, Anna Yelick, Kimberly Brisebois, Kelvin L. Banks Nov 2011

Low-Income Fathers’ Barriers To Participation In Family And Parenting Programs, Shawna J. Lee, Anna Yelick, Kimberly Brisebois, Kelvin L. Banks

Journal of Family Strengths

This exploratory study used semi-structured focus groups to examine: 1) where and from whom fathers obtain information about parenting; 2) the types of parenting services men are aware of, and their attitudes about participating in such services; and 3) fathers’ perceived norms about the acceptability and utility of various parenting practices. Low-income men (N = 17) were recruited from a human services agency in Detroit, Michigan. Four major themes emerged. First was the need for male-focused community resources for fathers. Second was that men were aware of and used positive disciplinary strategies. Third was emphasis on fathers’ positive and effective …

Participants were invited to participate in a study through a survey soliciting feedback regarding the importance and effectiveness of the training and information received through the Summit, gaps in resources, and future educational and training needs. Overall, participants gave satisfactory ratings regarding the training and …

Grandparents In Kinship Care: Help Or Hindrance To Family Preservation, Patricia A. Wilkerson, Gloria J. Davis Nov 2011

Grandparents In Kinship Care: Help Or Hindrance To Family Preservation, Patricia A. Wilkerson, Gloria J. Davis

Journal of Family Strengths

The phenomenon of grandparents and other relatives raising children is a tradition rooted in the African American culture. However, a substantial increase in the number of relatives raising children has drawn attention to the child welfare system. Many of the biological parents are incarcerated for drugs or suffering from other social ills. Kinship care is an important component of family preservation and prevents court intervention based on child protection concerns and avoids formal placement of children in the child welfare system (Wilkerson, 1999). The child welfare system, however, is not conducive to this phenomenon. Placing children with grandparents and relatives …

Family Stability And Childhood Behavioral Outcomes: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Stephen Baldridge Nov 2011

Family Stability And Childhood Behavioral Outcomes: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Stephen Baldridge

Journal of Family Strengths

As the definition of what is considered a family changes in our society, the family unit itself continues to undergo changes. These changes can sometimes lead to decreased stability within the family unit. One of the greatest challenges facing those researching this phenomenon is the lack of consistency within the existing body of research surrounding what familial instability actually is (the definition). This critical review of the literature examines the current body of literature in order to identify what is known about family stability and its impact on adolescent behavior, as well as what gaps currently exist. This review focuses …

Strengthening Families: Parents' Voices On Discipline And Child Rearing, Elizabeth M. Breshears Nov 2011

Strengthening Families: Parents' Voices On Discipline And Child Rearing, Elizabeth M. Breshears

Journal of Family Strengths

This qualitative study conducted semi-structured, multi-session focus groups and interviews with twenty-seven participants to explore in-depth, participant constructs of child discipline and punishment methods and reasons for the continuing support for corporal punishment of U.S. children. The research assumed that parents want to parent well and utilized the strengths perspective as the instrument to listen to participants' voices. Narratives revealed that participants were thoughtful about discipline and parenting strategies and viewed their parent role as a serious commitment. Non-violent discipline strategies, particularly communication, were often used. However, parents generally framed use of physical punishment as “when children need spanking” versus …

An Examination Of The Contextual Environment Of Families With Sexually Abused Adolescents, Javonda D. Williams, Debra Nelson-Gardell Nov 2011

An Examination Of The Contextual Environment Of Families With Sexually Abused Adolescents, Javonda D. Williams, Debra Nelson-Gardell

Journal of Family Strengths

This study examined the impact of the contextual environment of the family on post abuse adjustment of sexually abused adolescents. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory was used to investigate how the external influences of the family impact the capacity of families to foster the recovery of sexually abused adolescents. The results from this secondary analysis of data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being Wave I (NSCAW, Dowd et al., 2002) support contextually sensitive treatment planning for sexually abused adolescents and their families.

Resilient Families Help Make Resilient Children, James P. Coyle Nov 2011

Resilient Families Help Make Resilient Children, James P. Coyle

Journal of Family Strengths

Many children are resilient despite dysfunctional families and communities. Resilience theory and research describe families’ positive impact on children’s resilience, yet it can often be challenging to identify these factors in children’s multi-problem families. Strategies for enhancing family resilience can strengthen the family treatment approaches that are commonly used to help children. This paper explains how family resilience influences children's resilience and applies this knowledge to a case example of a struggling family. It proposes methods for identifying and enhancing family protective factors that support children’s resilience.

That Wall Is Around My Heart: Family Centered Practice, Roger Friedman Nov 2011

That Wall Is Around My Heart: Family Centered Practice, Roger Friedman

Journal of Family Strengths

The author uses a clinical case study, in which he works with a teenager and his adoptive parents to illustrate how placement and adoption decisions can provide physical safety while at the same time exacerbating and extending overlooked and destructive effects of child abuse. The case study highlights the continuing impact of childhood trauma on the interpersonal patterns of behavior within the family, whether biological, kinship, foster or adoptive. The tendency for patterns of aggression and reactivity to be repeated by the victim and his or her caregivers in a foster or adoptive home, and then to extend into the …

Is Our Business Family-Centered?, David Berns Nov 2011

Is Our Business Family-Centered?, David Berns

Journal of Family Strengths

Human Services agencies often claim to be family-centered, but continue to implement “Service Integration” in a way that supports their mission rather than supporting families. David Berns, guest editor for this issue of the Journal of Family Strengths, presents a framework for redefining the role of governmental agencies beyond their day-to-day delivery of services to one that prevents the need for more intrusive and more costly interventions. Under this philosophy, agencies must consider how families functioned before they requested assistance, and how they will function if services are not successful. By taking the time to truly understand a family’s needs, …

Emigration And Wages: The Eu Enlargement Experiment, Benjamin Elsner Nov 2011

Emigration And Wages: The Eu Enlargement Experiment, Benjamin Elsner

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper studies the impact of a large emigration wave on real wages in the source country. Following EU enlargement in 2004, a large share of the workforce of the Central and Eastern Europe emigrated to Western Europe. Using data from Lithuania for the calibration of a factor demand model I show that emigration had a significant short-run impact on real wages in the source country. In particular, emigration led to a change in the wage distribution between young and old workers. The wages of young workers increased by 6%, whereas the wages of old workers decreased by around 1%. …

Trade In Environmental Goods, With Focus On Climate-Friendly Goods And Technologies, Zhongxiang Zhang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Paragraph 31(iii) of the Doha Ministerial Declaration mandates to the liberalization of environmental goods and services. This mandate offers a good opportunity to put climate-friendly goods and services on a fast track to liberalization. Agreement on this paragraph should represent one immediate contribution that the WTO can make to fight against climate change. This paper presents the key issues surrounding the liberalization of trade in climate-friendly goods and technologies in WTO environmental goods negotiations. It begins with discussing what products to liberalize and how. Given that WTO Members are divided by this key issue, the paper explores options to move …

Intellectual Property And Biodiversity: When And Where Are Property Rights Important?, Mare Sarr, Tim Swanson Nov 2011

Intellectual Property And Biodiversity: When And Where Are Property Rights Important?, Mare Sarr, Tim Swanson

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

An important issue in the life sciences industries concerns the nature of the incentive mechanism that should govern the production of innovation within this R&D sector. We look at the specific problem of coordinating the supply of inputs across very different agents - North and South - that must each supply inputs in order to generate innovations from the industry. The current arrangement in this industry provides for a single property right at “end of the pipeline”, i.e. where marketing of the innovation occurs. This property rights scenario raises two problems, one of efficiency and one of equity. The key …

Emissions Pricing To Stabilize Global Climate, Valentina Bosetti, Sergey Paltsev, John Reilly, Carlo Carraro Nov 2011

Emissions Pricing To Stabilize Global Climate, Valentina Bosetti, Sergey Paltsev, John Reilly, Carlo Carraro

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In the absence of significant greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation, many analysts project that atmospheric concentrations of species identified for control in the Kyoto protocol could exceed 1000 ppm (carbon-dioxide-equivalent) by 2100 from the current levels of about 435 ppm. This could lead to global average temperature increases of between 2.5 and 6°C by the end of the century. There are risks of even greater warming given that underlying uncertainties in emissions projections and climate response are substantial. Stabilization of GHG concentrations that would have a reasonable chance of meeting temperature targets identified in international negotiations would require significant reductions in …

Foreign Direct Investment In A Two-Tier Oligopoly : Coordination, Vertical Integration, And Welfare, Ping Lin, Kamal Saggi Nov 2011

Foreign Direct Investment In A Two-Tier Oligopoly : Coordination, Vertical Integration, And Welfare, Ping Lin, Kamal Saggi

staff_fulltext

We study foreign direct investment (FDI) by two independent investors/entrants into a two-tiered oligopolistic industry. An FDI subsidy at a single stage of production can be sufficient to resolve the coordination problem facing investors thereby inducing entry at both stages. However, due to linkage offsetting, FDI at both stages may yield lower domestic welfare than FDI at a single stage. Vertical integration not only solves the coordination problem, it also eliminates double marginalization. But since the integrated multinational does not sell the intermediate to local firms, its entry generates no vertical linkages and can yield lower welfare than FDI by …

Rooting Depth And Architecture Are Critical For Productivity Of Décrue Sorghum Research Brief, Intsormil Nov 2011

Rooting Depth And Architecture Are Critical For Productivity Of Décrue Sorghum Research Brief, Intsormil

USAID Mali Mission Awards

Most of the sorghum in Mali is grown under rainfed conditions on the plains, but some is grown in the banks of rivers and lakes when the water level recedes (sorgho de décrue or décrue sorghum). This is one of the oldest and most fascinating methods of cultivating sorghum. The décrue production system is particularly practiced around water bodies in the Mopti, Gao, Tombouctou and Kayes regions. This production system plays an important role in the food security of these regions. As the floodwater recedes, seeds are sown in muddy soil and the crop is grown on the stored soil …

Intellectual Property Rights, Product Complexity, And The Organization Of Multinational Firms, Alireza Naghavi, Julia Spies, Farid Toubal Nov 2011

Intellectual Property Rights, Product Complexity, And The Organization Of Multinational Firms, Alireza Naghavi, Julia Spies, Farid Toubal

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper studies how the Intellectual Property Right (IPR) regime in destination countries influences the way multinationals structure the international organization of their production. In particular, we explore how multinationals divide tasks of different complexities across countries with different levels of IPR protection. The analysis studies the decision of firms between procurement from related parties and outsourcing to independents suppliers at the product level. It also breaks down outsourcing into two types by distinguishing whether or not they involve technology sharing between the two parties. We combine data from a French firm-level survey on the mode choice for each transaction …
