Effect Of Nanofluid-Based Absorbers On Direct Solar Collector / Tham Chi Meng, Chi Meng Tham Nov 2011

Effect Of Nanofluid-Based Absorbers On Direct Solar Collector / Tham Chi Meng, Chi Meng Tham

Student Works (2010-2019)

As conventional energy like fossil fuels is getting rare, cost of energy production has been increasingly higher. The concern of environmental pollution caused by burning of hydrocarbon fuels has also been raised among developed and developing nations. These make clean renewable energy a major research topic in recent decades. Among them, solar energy, as the most vastly available energy and also supremely effective in terms of energy conversion has been the most sought after. The most common solar thermal collector utilizes black surface as radiant absorber but the efficiency is limited to the effectiveness of the black surface and the …

Assessment Of Backwash Water Discharge Operation At Sheahan Pumping Station, Memphis, Tennessee, Jittapong Malasri Nov 2011

Assessment Of Backwash Water Discharge Operation At Sheahan Pumping Station, Memphis, Tennessee, Jittapong Malasri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study provided analysis of the distribution of solids, volume of solids by weight and volume of discharge of the backwash operations at Sheahan Pumping Station. The sample data was analyzed statistically against factors that potentially affect the results. The combination of the data and statistical analysis helped formulated a theory of how the solids behave within the recovery basin. The suggested behavior of the suspended solids within the recovery basin is supported by visual observations, recovery basin characteristics, residual pump location and suspended solid data. Knowing the behavior of suspended solids within the basin is critical in designing an …

Advance Bandwidth Scheduling In High-Speed Dedicated Networks, Yunyue Lin Nov 2011

Advance Bandwidth Scheduling In High-Speed Dedicated Networks, Yunyue Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

An increasing number of high-performance networks provision dedicatedconnections through circuit switching or MPLS/GMPLS techniques to supportlarge data transfer. The link bandwidths in such networks are typicallyshared by multiple users through advance reservation, resulting in varyingbandwidth availability in future time. We investigate a comprehensive set ofadvance bandwidth scheduling problems that are categorized into the followingfour classes. 1) Basic bandwidth scheduling. We formulate four types of problems byexhausting the combinations of different path and bandwidth constraints:fixed/variable path with fixed/variable bandwidth (F/VP-F/VB) with the sameobjective to minimize the data transfer end time for a given date size. ForVPFB and VPVB, we further consider …

Caregiver, Physician, And Nurse Preferences Of Nutritional Support In Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Marissa Tracey Adams Nov 2011

Caregiver, Physician, And Nurse Preferences Of Nutritional Support In Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Marissa Tracey Adams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Objective: This study looked at caregivers', physicians', and nurses' preferences of types of nutrition support. Many cancer patients are given enteral or parenteral nutrition support because they cannot obtain nutrients orally.Design: This is a qualitative study which examined caregivers', physicans', and nurses' preferred type of nutrition support, feelings toward each type, goals regarding nutrition, and how the medical team could help meet those goals. Subjects: A total of 71 caregivers, physicians, and nurses from the hematopoietic stem cell transplant unit at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital were surveyed, of which were 17 males and 54 females. The ages ranged from …

Binning Metagenomic Data By Cssr, Rekha Bhaskarabhatla Nov 2011

Binning Metagenomic Data By Cssr, Rekha Bhaskarabhatla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Metagenomics is the study of microbes in their natural environments without the need for isolation and lab cultivation. The DNA fragments obtained from sequencing of a sample of mixed species requires taxonomic characterization called binning. My research concerns binning of metagenomic data using a novel approach. Each genomic sequence was codified based on their Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio (CSSR) values. Since the genic CSSR values of phylogenetically related organisms often share a definable pattern, a neural network was trained to recognize the genic CSSR patterns of known species. The trained neural network was then used to cluster the CSSR values from …

Understading Multiple Origin As Conflicts, Yaoqing Liu Nov 2011

Understading Multiple Origin As Conflicts, Yaoqing Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Internet routing problems are often difficult to detect and diagnose because one address prefix can be originated by multiple ASes. There is, however, no comprehensive analysis on the causes of Multiple Origin AS (MOAS) conflicts. In this paper, we study the characteristics of MOAS conflicts and compare them with those from 10 years ago. We also provide an in-depth examination of four MOAS causes--IXP, anycast, false origin AS, and origin-AS transition. Furthermore, we propose two heuristics to identify MOAS conflicts caused by false origin ASes and origin-AS transitions. The findings from our study and proposed heuristics can help us design …

An Interview With Michael Martone, Matthew Baker Nov 2011

An Interview With Michael Martone, Matthew Baker

Booth

Depending on whom you ask, Michael Martone is either contemporary literature's most notorious prankster, innovator, or mutineer. In 1988 his AAP membership was briefly revoked after Martone published his first two books -- a "prose" collection titled Alive and Dead in Indiana and a "poetry" collection titled Seeing Eye -- which, aside from Seeing Eye's line breaks, were word-for-word identical. His membership to the Society of Scottish Novelists was revoked in 1991 after SSN discovered that, while Martone's registered nom de plume had been "born" in Edinburgh, Martone himself had never been to Scotland. His AWP membership was revoked …

Do Exercise Motives Predict Obligatory Exercise?, Mary Pritchard, Jessica L. Beaver Nov 2011

Do Exercise Motives Predict Obligatory Exercise?, Mary Pritchard, Jessica L. Beaver

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Few studies have examined whether factors predicting obligatory exercise differ by gender. 303 participants completed the Obligatory Exercise Questionnaire and the Reason for Exercise Inventory. All variables correlated significantly. However, the correlation between exercising for fitness and obligatory exercise was significantly stronger in women than men. In women, obligatory exercise was predicted by exercising to improve body tone, fitness, and to enhance mood; in men, obligatory exercise was predicted by exercising to improve body tone, enjoyment, and perceived attractiveness. Implications for treatment are discussed.

Optimizing University Managed Resources For South Dakota Public Universities: A Simulation Approach, Michael Holbeck, David Chicoine Nov 2011

Optimizing University Managed Resources For South Dakota Public Universities: A Simulation Approach, Michael Holbeck, David Chicoine

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

A simulation analysis demonstrates the use of tuition as a policy tool to achieve financial independence among the six South Dakota public universities under University Managed Resources (UMR). The simulation analysis maintains an overall environment of funding stability and is guided by horizontal equity, a concept from the economics of public finance that all entities of the same or similar situation are treated similarly. Financial independence, within the simulation analysis, is defined as an annual budgeting process with no reallocation of financial resources among or between the six universities. For each of the three indicators of horizontal equity simulated, achieving …
