Combined Effect Of Transmembrane Proteins And Cortical Cytoskeleton On The Lateral Organization Of Plasma Membranes, Md Kabir Uddin Sikder Nov 2011

Combined Effect Of Transmembrane Proteins And Cortical Cytoskeleton On The Lateral Organization Of Plasma Membranes, Md Kabir Uddin Sikder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The plasma membrane acts as a functional interface between the cytoplasm and the outer environment of a cell. The plasma membrane is composed of different types of lipids and proteins, and is underlined with a cytoskeleton meshwork. The plasma membrane of eukaryotic cell exhibits compositional heterogeneities in the form of nanoscale-lipid domains, called lipid rafts. The domains in model membranes are large micron-scale domains, larger than the nanoscale lipid rafts in the plasma membrane. In the present work, the hypothesis made earlier by Kusumi et al. has been addressed through large scale Langevin molecular dynamics simulations of a model recently …

The Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Arthropod Biodiversity In Native Canebrakes, Justin James Geise Nov 2011

The Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Arthropod Biodiversity In Native Canebrakes, Justin James Geise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dense stands of Arundinaria gigantea (Walt.) Chapm. or canebrakes werecommon in the southeastern US, but currently are a critically endangered ecosystem with less than 2% of their area remaining. Remnant canebrakes have become fragmented and isolated. In this study, arthropod communities within these canebrake patches and non-cane patches were examined to assess general island biogeography theories.Four patches (>0.5ha; <0.5ha to >0.1ha; <0.1ha; adjacent non cane patch) were selected at four sites in the Mississippi alluvial valley during three collection periods. Measures of diversity, community composition, and functional group organization were compared to determine if differences existed.Diversity measures and functional group organization did not differ among patch sizes. Diversity measures decreased as distance from canebrakes increased. Canebrakes contained many species that were not found in adjacent non-cane patches with almost 97% uncommon to rare. Conservation of canebrakes is necessary to maintain the biodiversity of these uncommon arthropods.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

After combat, social support may reduce the severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol consumption. This study tested the buffering and direct effect theories of social support to determine if combat exposure moderated the relationship between unit cohesion and PTSD and the relationship between postdeployment social support and PTSD. The impact of combat exposure, unit cohesion, and postdeployment social support on alcohol consumption was investigated. Seventy hazardous-drinking veterans (63% Caucasian, 90% men) completed structured interviews and self-report measures. Combat exposure moderated the relationship between unit cohesion and PTSD. Unit cohesion was related to reduced PTSD severity for lower combat …

The Influence Of Strategies Used To Communicate Sustainable Corporate Responsibility On Reputation Of A Major Airport, Benno D. Hoffmann

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Self-presentation of a corporation as a citizen committed to sustainable corporate responsibility can, according to scholarly findings, help the organization improve its reputation among key stakeholders. The purpose of this case study was to explore the success of one major airport in aligning communication strategies to improve its reputation. The research question involved how effectively a major German airport communicated its commitment to sustainable corporate responsibility to its key stakeholders during 2005--2009. Of particular interest was how key stakeholders perceived the airport's stance towards the impacts of aircraft noise. Corporate documents, newspaper articles, and semistructured interviews comprised the data. Data …

Flying Home, University Of Dayton Nov 2011

Flying Home, University Of Dayton

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

As I flew home for deep-fried Turkey day in Virginia, I "tried" to look outside my window as the plane bumped and jerked from Dayton to D.C. The rivers I saw as I was about to land were very surprising to me because I had no idea that we had so many close to my house. The time in between hitting my head from the wind and from trying to make my knees as small as possible so the angry lady in front of me wouldn't turn around again, I attempted to find out where these rivers and lakes were.

Investigating Writing Performance And Institutional Supports Among Teacher Candidates Who Transferred From Community Colleges, Katharine Pace Miles, Leslie Craigo, Selenid Gonzalez-Frey

Higher Learning Research Communications

To provide a snapshot of the skills of community college students as compared to senior college students, this study investigated writing performance and college experience of initial two-year enrolled (community college transfer students, n = 17) versus initial four-year enrolled students (n = 12) in a teacher preparation program. Results of independent samples t-tests on in-class writing, research paper, and final score were non-significant (p =.28, p = .54, p = .15, respectively) indicating that two-year and four-year start teacher candidates did not differ in their performance on these assignments nor overall in the course. Qualitative data indicated that while …

The Effectiveness Of Treatments For Trauma: A Quantitative Review, Joseph M. Roberts Nov 2011

The Effectiveness Of Treatments For Trauma: A Quantitative Review, Joseph M. Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This quantitative review examined the published research on the effectiveness of treatments for trauma. The review included 31 studies that compared treatment for trauma with a wait-list or placebo control group and provided information about the time between the traumatic event and when therapy occurred.Findings from the review confirm there is a beneficial effect of therapy and suggest that gains made in therapy are maintained and increase after therapy ends. Congitive-behavioral therapies appeared to be better than other treatments.Analysis also revealed that treatment was less effective, and sometimes harmful, for patients undergoing psychological debriefings. The differences between treatments did not depend on …

Two Novel Applications Of The Information Entropy Method For Evaluation Of Acoustic Emission Measurements, Ming Fan Nov 2011

Two Novel Applications Of The Information Entropy Method For Evaluation Of Acoustic Emission Measurements, Ming Fan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Two of the major obstacles that limit the applications of the acoustic emission (AE) technique from being more acceptable for material characterization are: 1) difficulty of finding an efficient method to evaluate AE measurements when there are incomplete signals; and 2) poor repeatability and reproducibility of AE results. This thesis contains two manuscripts to address these problems. The first one is aimed at studying the consequence of incompleteness of AE signals, and our results suggest that the information entropy method is able to minimize inconsistent results caused by the incompleteness. The second one is aimed at studying the reproducibility of …

Investigating Early Mississippian Community Patterning In The Mid-South Through Multiple-Method Survey Of The Ames Site (40fy7) In Fayette County, Tennessee, Eric Anderson Goddard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The settlement patterns of small, Early Mississippian sites located in upland locations of the Mid-South remain poorly understood despite decades of research in the area. A multi-stage research design was implemented to determine the settlement system used in the region by applying multiple discovery methods to study the Ames Mound Complex (40FY7), an Early Mississippian site in Western Tennessee that has been considered a vacant ceremonial center since its discovery. Ames underwent surface collection, shovel testing, magnetometry survey and excavation to determine if the site was indeed a vacant center, or if it contained a habitation area associated with the …

Evaluation Of Carbon Filament Electrodes For Determination Of 2,6-Diisopropylphenol (Propofol) In Aqueous And Organic Solutions, James Bereman Sheppard Nov 2011

Evaluation Of Carbon Filament Electrodes For Determination Of 2,6-Diisopropylphenol (Propofol) In Aqueous And Organic Solutions, James Bereman Sheppard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Since the common anaesthetic drug 2,6-diisopropylphenol (propofol) has a narrow physiological range, the administration of this drug could be improved through the development of a feedback-controlled delivery system. An evaluation of several carbon filaments was conducted to determine their capability to serve as the detecting element in such a system. Planar electrochemical cells (PECs) were fabricated with working electrodes made from three carbon filaments: Goodfellow (GF) carbon fibers, 11μm diameter; Bioanalytical Systems (BAS) carbon fibers, 9μm diameter; Specialty Materials (SM) glassy carbon monofilaments, 34.5μm diameter. The cells were used to make multiple, successive determinations of propofol – via cyclic voltammetry …

Sperm Allocation And Sociosexual Behavior In Meadow Voles, Ashlee Anne Vaughn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, are microtine rodents that inhabit grasslands in the temperate zone of northeastern and central North America. During the breeding season, males inhabit large overlapping home ranges that encompass the territories of one or more females. Males and females are promiscuous and males compete with other males for mating opportunities with females. The threat of this competition varies depending on the presence of a rival, the number of rivals, and the quality of a rival. Male and female meadow voles scent mark and conspecifics use the information contained in these scent marks to locate mates and rivals. …
