Reflecting On The Past; Shaping The Future Of Student Affairs, Michael J. Stebleton, Marina B. Aleixo
Reflecting On The Past; Shaping The Future Of Student Affairs, Michael J. Stebleton, Marina B. Aleixo
New York Journal of Student Affairs
The purpose of this essay is to invite student affairs educators to reflect on the past to help shape the future of the profession. The metaphor of a public art exhibit with five reflective questions is used to inspire educators to think critically about student engagement. As the demographics of students pursuing higher education changes, we urge a recommitment to historically underserved student populations. This call to service invokes a social justice philosophy when we serve historically marginalized student groups, including immigrants, students of color, and first-generation learners. Doing so will engage students and reenergize our commitment to the profession.

Unfamiliar Territory: Faculty Discomfort About Interactions With Students During Out-Of-Class Academic Initiatives, Jörg Vianden, Kerri A. Smith
Unfamiliar Territory: Faculty Discomfort About Interactions With Students During Out-Of-Class Academic Initiatives, Jörg Vianden, Kerri A. Smith
New York Journal of Student Affairs
A considerable body of research exists on successful student outcomes from interactions with faculty. When such interactions do not take place research often cites issues of student discomfort with faculty members in out-of-class situations as reasons. This qualitative study with eight faculty members at a Southern research institution explored these issues from the faculty perspective. Findings show that faculty may have a similar sense of discomfort about interacting with students outside of the classroom. This has direct implications for the work of student affairs professionals attempting to recruit faculty for co-curricular academic initiatives. The authors offer recommendations for student affairs …

Commentary On "Strengthening Families: Parents' Voices On Discipline And Child Rearing", Matthew Sanders
Commentary On "Strengthening Families: Parents' Voices On Discipline And Child Rearing", Matthew Sanders
Journal of Family Strengths
There is a growing consensus among professionals working with parents and children, and advocates for child rights, that a ban on the use of corporal punishment (CP) in raising children is justified in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC, 1989). However, this is an issue which seems to polarize people and opponents of banning CP have attacked the scientific literature and made dire predictions of adverse consequences if parents are not allowed to use CP. The problem is that so much attention has been focused on the “to spank or not to spank” …
Influence Of Supraglottal Geometry And Modeling Choices On The Flow-Induced Vibration Of A Computational Vocal Fold Model, Timothy E. Shurtz
Influence Of Supraglottal Geometry And Modeling Choices On The Flow-Induced Vibration Of A Computational Vocal Fold Model, Timothy E. Shurtz
Theses and Dissertations
Computational models of the flow-induced vibrations of the vocal folds are powerful tools that can be used in conjunction with physical experiments to better understand voice production. This thesis research has been performed to contribute to the understanding of vocal fold dynamics as well as several aspects of computational modeling of the vocal folds. In particular, the effects of supraglottal geometry have been analyzed using a computational model of the vocal folds and laryngeal airway. In addition, three important computational modeling parameters (contact line location, Poisson's ratio, and symmetry assumptions) have been systematically varied to determine their influence on model …

Preparation And Application Of Nano-Nio As Anode In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Cheng-Dong Bai, Jia-Jia Chen, Qi Zhang, Ming-Sen Zheng, Quan-Feng Dong
Preparation And Application Of Nano-Nio As Anode In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Cheng-Dong Bai, Jia-Jia Chen, Qi Zhang, Ming-Sen Zheng, Quan-Feng Dong
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this work, the nano-NiO material was prepared by hydrothermal method. The surface morphologies and electrochemical properties of nano-NiO material were investigated. The special nano-NiO material with porous surface assembling honeycombs(100-200nm) was obtained by using surface active agents. The discharge capacity of nano-NiO electrode up to 2385.7 mAh/g was achieved at current density of 0.1A/g in the first circle, while 1100mAh/g could be maintained after 100 circles. At current density of 2.0A/g, the discharge capacity of 600 mAh/g was obtained. And when the current density was reduced to 0.1A/g, the discharge capacity was restored to 1050 mAh/g. The nano-NiO electrode exhibited …
Microemulsion Preparation And Electrochemical Characterization Of Pt/C, Ptir/C Electrocatalysts, Ya-Ping Zeng, Sheng Sui
Microemulsion Preparation And Electrochemical Characterization Of Pt/C, Ptir/C Electrocatalysts, Ya-Ping Zeng, Sheng Sui
Journal of Electrochemistry
The Pt/C electrocatalysts were prepared by three different systems and the PtIr/C electrocatalysts were prepared with four different Ir contents. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), potentiostatic and potentiodynamic polarizations measurements. The experimental results confirmed that the electrocatalyst particles prepared by the microemulsion method were well distributed on XC-72R supports with the active particle sizes of 5~10nm and good electrocatalysts activity. The Pt85Ir15/C electrocatalysts showed the highest overall electrochemical activity in unitized regenerative fuel cell.
