Commentary On "The Impact Of Family Stressors On The Social Development Of Adolescents In Residential Facilities", David Derezotes

Journal of Family Strengths

This is a commentary on “The impact of family stressors on the social development of adolescents admitted to a residential treatment facility,” by Cynthia Harr. This article examines the important but relatively understudied relationship of family dynamics in the social development of high risk teens in residential treatment facility (RTF) care. The commentary supports the author’s calls for a continuum of care involving greater cooperation with parents, and critiques and expands on some of the recommendations.

Commentary On “Connecting The Dots: Families And Children With Special Needs In A Rural Community”, Carl Tapia Nov 2011

Commentary On “Connecting The Dots: Families And Children With Special Needs In A Rural Community”, Carl Tapia

Journal of Family Strengths

Starks et al. discuss an evaluation of educational initiatives to improve rural systems of care for children with special needs. Akin to the medical home neighborhood concept, building a holistic medical "village" entails improving collaboration, sharing accountability, and helping families to navigate the health care system. The article suggests that policymakers should include patient experiences of care in program evaluation, and they should build a community infrastructure for shared information and efficient communication.

How Family Stability Affects Children, Marni E. Axelrad Nov 2011

How Family Stability Affects Children, Marni E. Axelrad

Journal of Family Strengths

The following commentary serves as a response to the article, “Family Stability and Childhood Behavioral Outcomes: A Critical Review of the Literature.” The review article provides a good overview into family factors affecting children, but falls short in discussing how modifying family factors could change specific child behavioral outcomes. The next step in this field of research is a unified definition of family stability, a standardized measure of family stability, and discussion of how child behavior affects family stability, and how changes in family stability could affect child behavior.

Commentary On "An Examination Of The Contextual Environment Of Families With Sexually Abused Adolescents", Monit Cheung, Jacquelynn Duron Nov 2011

Commentary On "An Examination Of The Contextual Environment Of Families With Sexually Abused Adolescents", Monit Cheung, Jacquelynn Duron

Journal of Family Strengths

The focus of this article is on the role of family in adolescent outcomes when sexual abuse has occurred. The authors identify environmental factors for promoting well-being among adolescents. Two hypotheses aim to examine the systemic influence on adolescents who have been sexually abused, with regard to: 1) mesosystemic barriers (i.e., low levels of school engagement and peer relationships), and 2) exosystemic risk factors (i.e., low levels of social support, socioeconomic status, and community safety, as well as large community size).

Considering The Consequences Of Child Welfare Service Decisions, Vincent J. Geremia Nov 2011

Considering The Consequences Of Child Welfare Service Decisions, Vincent J. Geremia

Journal of Family Strengths

The following commentary serves as a response to the article, “That Wall is Around My Heart,” underscoring the importance of decision making in child welfare services. The commentary supports the need for child welfare systems to carefully consider the long-term consequences of various service intervention strategies. Child welfare systems must attend to both the internal external elements of safety, giving special attention to the emotional trauma of child maltreatment and the trauma resulting from removal and placement in alternative care. The commentary supports the need for child welfare systems to provide effective interventions that prevent and respond to child abuse …

Dipole-Dipole Interaction Between Rubidium Rydberg Atoms, Emily Altiere, Donald P. Fahey, Michael W. Noel, Rachel J. Smith, Thomas J. Carroll Nov 2011

Dipole-Dipole Interaction Between Rubidium Rydberg Atoms, Emily Altiere, Donald P. Fahey, Michael W. Noel, Rachel J. Smith, Thomas J. Carroll

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Ultracold Rydberg atoms in a static electric field can exchange energy via the dipole-dipole interaction. The Stark effect shifts the energy levels of the atoms which tunes the energy exchange into resonance at specific values of the electric field (F¨orster resonances). We excite rubidium atoms to Rydberg states by focusing either a 480 nm beam from a tunable dye laser or a pair of diode lasers into a magneto-optical trap. The trap lies at the center of a configuration of electrodes. We scan the electric field by controlling the voltage on the electrodes while measuring the fraction of atoms that …
