Store-Operated Calcium Channels In The Function Of Intracardiac Neurons, Timetria Bonds Nov 2011

Store-Operated Calcium Channels In The Function Of Intracardiac Neurons, Timetria Bonds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Proper autonomic regulation of mammalian cardiac function is dependent upon very complex and precise communication among the intracardiac ganglia and individual neurons within the ganglia. An array of neuromodulators is found within the ganglia that direct neuronal activity by modulating the movement of calcium. The current study determines that opioidergic agonists, which have been found to contribute to severe cardiac disease states and intracellular calcium mobilization, are also responsible for changes in the function of the intracardiac neuron via their effects on store-operated calcium channels (SOCs).

Previous studies suggest that phosphorylation plays a role in SOC regulation. Using Fura-2 calcium …

Agile Innovation Management, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu Nov 2011

Agile Innovation Management, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The volume and velocity of innovations are on the increase resulting in increased pressures on every company for attaining, retaining and increasing its market leadership. Many companies need to retool their innovation management processes to address two agility related objectives in order to survive and grow in such a rapidly changing innovation environment. The first objective would be the ability to assemble an innovation team within the shortest possible time. This can only be satisfied by companies that are capable of forming innovation teams rather quickly. The related second objective would be to reduce the I2M (Idea to Market) cycle …

Studies On The Adherence Properties Of Plant Lectins And Bacterial Adhesins And Their Inhibition By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides And Bovine Colostrum Fractions, Maria X. Maldonado-Gomez Nov 2011

Studies On The Adherence Properties Of Plant Lectins And Bacterial Adhesins And Their Inhibition By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides And Bovine Colostrum Fractions, Maria X. Maldonado-Gomez

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

To initiate colonization and infection, most microbial pathogens must first recognize and adhere to cells in the host tissues. Adherence inhibition, therefore, can be used as a strategy for preventing infectious disease. In this research, we developed a simplified model using plant lectins and HEp-2 tissue culture cells to simulate bacterial adhesins-receptors interactions. The effect of lectin ligands and two prebiotic carbohydrates, galactooligosaccharide (GOS) and polydextrose (PDX) was measured with this approach. Lectins that were able to bind to the target cells were inhibited in the presence of the cognate ligands and at least one of the prebiotic carbohydrates. The …

Aggression And The Failure Of Friendship To Buffer Against Loneliness, Rachel N. Tillery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Do children’s attributions of their friends’ aggressive behaviors matter? In short, yes, children’s attributions of their mutual friends’ aggressive behaviors do matter in terms of children’s reports of loneliness. The goal of the present research was to examine how children’s perceptions of their mutual friends’ aggressive behaviors related to loneliness after controlling for peer group factors (i.e. peer liking, peer popularity, number of mutual friends, and the child’s own level of aggression) known to contribute to loneliness. Self-report measures of loneliness, friendship nominations, and classroom nominations for liking, popularity, and aggression were collected from 185 third through sixth grade children. …

Egfr Regulation Of Epidermal Barrier Function, Nhu Quynh T. Tran Nov 2011

Egfr Regulation Of Epidermal Barrier Function, Nhu Quynh T. Tran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Keratinocyte terminal differentiation is the process that ultimately forms the epidermal barrier that is essential for mammals to survive in the ex utero environment. This process is tightly controlled by the expression of many well-characterized genes. Although a few of these genes are known to be regulated by the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), an important regulator of multiple epidermal functions, neither the genome-wide scale of EGFR-mediated regulation nor the mechanisms by which EGFR signaling controls keratinocyte differentiation are well understood. Using microarray analysis we identified 2,676 genes that are regulated by EGF, a ligand of the EGFR. We further …

Design Of A Metatarsophalangeal Joint Implant Wear Tester, Kelly Wilton Schlachter Nov 2011

Design Of A Metatarsophalangeal Joint Implant Wear Tester, Kelly Wilton Schlachter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of the present study was to design a wear tester for implants of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (FMTPJ), otherwise known as the first joint of the big toe. Many different designs of this type of implant from many different manufacturers are currently in clinical use, but there is no information in the open literature as to how these implants are tested for in vivo durability. There are several case studies, however, in which premature implant fractures were reported. It is possible that the incidence of such fractures might have been lower if standardized wear testing of FMTPJ implants …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nearly 60% to 67% of all injuries that occur annually within the US are due to musculoskeletal injuries, with over a million people requiring implants and bone grafting materials to reconstruct bone defects. Our lab has previously developed composite chitosan/nano-hydroxyapatite microsphere based bone grafts that had good compressive strengths, supported bone cell growth and mineralization in vitro, demonstrated biocompatibility and osteoconductivity in a rat calvarial defect model, and when loaded with rhBMP-2 was osteoinductive in a rat muscle pouch model. However, degradation of these scaffolds was very slow which may have limited the amount of new bone formed in vivo. …

Energy-Efficient Real-Time Data Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Tommy Szalapski, Sanjay Madria Nov 2011

Energy-Efficient Real-Time Data Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Tommy Szalapski, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wireless sensor networks possess significant limitations in storage, bandwidth, and power. Additionally, real-time sensor networks cannot tolerate high latency. While some good compression algorithms exist specific to sensor networks, in this paper we present an energy-efficient method with high compression ratio that reduces latency, storage and bandwidth usage further in comparison with some other recently proposed algorithms. Our Huffman style compression scheme exploits temporal locality and delta compression to provide better bandwidth utilization in the network, thus reducing latency for real time applications. Our performance evaluations show comparable compression ratios and energy savings with a significant decrease in latency compared …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we address content retrieval in Mobile Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks. We design a multi-tiered architecture for content retrieval, where at Tier 1, we design a protocol for content similarity governed by a parametera that trades accuracy with search overhead. at Tier 2, we introduce a novel concept called Chained Bloom Filters and design a protocol where popular search items are linked with popular content at each node in an efficient manner for subsequent retrieval. Extensive analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of our techniques. © 2011 IEEE.

Differential Combination Of Cytokine And Interferon- Gamma +874 T/A Polymorphisms Determines Disease Severity In Pulmonary Tuberculosis., Ambreen Ansari, Zahra Hasan, Ghaffar Dawood, Rabia Hussain

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:Mycobacterium tuberculosis infects nearly 1/3 of the world population and this reservoir forms the largest pool from which new cases arise. Among the cytokines, IFN-gamma is a key determinant in protection against tuberculosis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IFN-gamma gene (+874 T/A) which determine TT high ((hi)), AA low ((lo)) and TA intermediate ((int)) responder phenotypes have shown variable associations with tuberculosis disease outcome in different ethnic populations. The objective of the current study was to analyze IFN-gamma gene combinations with other IFN-gamma regulating cytokine genes (IL-10, TNF -alpha, IL-6) to see the effect of gene- combinations on disease …
