The Impact Of Alternative Dispute Resolution (Adr) In Employment Law, Douglas Ashman Dec 2011

The Impact Of Alternative Dispute Resolution (Adr) In Employment Law, Douglas Ashman

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

abstract

Ashman, Douglas E. Masters, Degree. Purdue University. The Impact of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Employment Law

Major Professor: Linda Naimi

A growing group of distinguished legal observers see cause for concern as ADR methods become more institutionalized and the basic theories and practices of Civil procedure are mediated and justice becomes an exercise in compromise. It is perceived by some observers that the justice system is becoming privatized and ADR is undermining the basic tenants of the American justice system and is a growing replacement for the checks and balances of a once enviable and unique civil justice …

Global Business Languages

Professor Christiane Keck, Professor Emerita of German and former Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures [as of January 1, 2012, the School of Languages and Cultures] at Purdue University, provided the driving force for the creation of Global Business Languages in the mid-1990s. From its beginning in 1996 she served as Editor of the journal, and although she retired from the university in 2002, she continued her editorship until 2010. Last year when she announced she would be leaving the journal, it was too late for us in our production schedule to offer more than brief thanks …

Introduction: Partnerships And New Alliances, Allen G. Wood

Global Business Languages

As we go to press, Greece is poised on the brink, yet again it seems, of defaulting on its massive debt, with predictions and fears of local, regional, and perhaps ultimately global dire consequences. The interconnectedness of economies around the globe has come into sharp focus as the prospects of financial crisis, perhaps even collapse, in the eurozone threatens to drag down the weak economic recovery in the United States, and adversely affect Asian economic stability. The past few years have shown all too clearly that globalization has a very real downside. Yet we hope to avoid a major crisis, …

Retaining Engineering Students Through A January Term German Immersion Study Tour, Sigrid Berka Dec 2011

Retaining Engineering Students Through A January Term German Immersion Study Tour, Sigrid Berka

Global Business Languages

Retention of engineering students is a national and international concern, since a globalizing world needs ever more culturally competent and technically adept graduates to fulfill the work force demands of companies operating globally. The data on retention of engineering students agrees that the freshman year is of critical importance; we fi nd that only about 40 to 50% of the students graduate with an engineering degree. The International Engineering Program (IEP) organizes a 10 to 14-day German Study Tour during January break, which is an effective retention tool for students enrolled in The University of Rhode Island’s demanding five-year dual …

Autoethnography And Garcia's Dreaming In Cuban, Samantha L. Mcauliffe Dec 2011

Autoethnography And Garcia's Dreaming In Cuban, Samantha L. Mcauliffe

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Authoethnography and Garcia's Dreaming in Cuban" Samantha L. McAuliffe positions Cristina Garcia's novel as a text of self-discovery and cultural reconciliation. McAuliffe examines multilingualism and hybridity in Dreaming in Cuban and postulates that the novel represents what Marie Louise Pratt calls the "contact zone" where cultures meet and clash. As autoethnography, Dreaming in Cuban allows an insider view of what being Cuban American really means. The reader is able to experience the conflict those with a hybrid identity experience through the eyes of one in the midst of that conflict. Further, McAuliffe suggests in her analysis …

Teaching Arabic To Business Students, Amel Mili Dec 2011

Teaching Arabic To Business Students, Amel Mili

Global Business Languages

It has become increasingly more critical for business students to be fluent in foreign languages and knowledgeable of foreign cultures. There is more to teaching a foreign language to a business student than teaching vocabulary and grammar. In order to prepare students to be successful businesspersons in the target geographic area, we must also introduce them to such topics as the local culture, local economic conditions, and local business ethics. In this article, I discuss my experience at Lauder with the Arabic language and culture program, by discussing in turn its requirements, premises, and lessons learned.

Web Reviews: Qr Codes For Sci-Tech Libraries, Lisa Johnston

Sci-Tech News

QR Codes are popping up everywhere…classroom walls, conference posters, and even T-shirts (http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/09shirt.html). These “Quick Response” Codes are essentially 2D barcodes that work with your mobile phone’s built-in camera and a reader application ( like “Google Goggles”) to easily point to a web-site or application with one click…rather than typing in a full URL. They also can add a bit of excitement or tech savvy to your promotion materials, such as displays and signs in the library and are very easy to implement.

Recently a group of librarians in my library got together to brainstorm how we can …

Evaluating The Cost-Effectiveness Of Roadside Culvert Treatments, Francisco Daniel B. De Albuquerque, Dean L. Sicking, Ronald K. Faller, Karla A. Lechtenberg Dec 2011

Evaluating The Cost-Effectiveness Of Roadside Culvert Treatments, Francisco Daniel B. De Albuquerque, Dean L. Sicking, Ronald K. Faller, Karla A. Lechtenberg

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Roadside cross-drainage culverts have been found to affect vehicle accident injury levels. As a result, highway designers have commonly used three safety treatments to protect errant motorists from striking culvert openings. These safety treatments have included: culvert extension, guardrail installation, and the application of safety grating. However, the identification of the most appropriate safety treatment for roadside culverts may be challenging; accident costs may dramatically change under different road and traffic characteristics. The purpose of this study was to estimate accident costs for a wide range of road and traffic scenarios and then define the safest treatment (i.e., treatment with …

Technologies Enabling Sustainability In The Built Environment, Mahmoud Alahmad, Muhammad Zulfiqar, Hosen Hasna Hh, Timothy Wisnieski, Nasser Aljuhaishi, Hamid Sharif

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Energy conservation is among society’s greatest challenges, and the built environment has a concentrated impact on our natural environment, economy, and health. Fundamental understandings of how energy is consumed, monitored, and controlled are key prerequisites for an energy conservation process. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of real-time energy monitors (RTM) to influence behavior change in residential consumers. A methodology for remote identification of load types along the electrical circuitry where they (load) are being consumed is also presented. The load type and status (on, off, standby) are determined both remotely and in a non-intrusive manner using Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring Methods. …

Using Principal Component Analysis For Early Fault Detection In Louisville Water Distribution System., Kevin M. Kastensmidt Dec 2011

Using Principal Component Analysis For Early Fault Detection In Louisville Water Distribution System., Kevin M. Kastensmidt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research dealt with the examination of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) information of a water distribution system through Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA is a mathematical method to convert a set of possibly correlated data into a set of fewer variables called principal components. In a SCADA environment, possibly hundreds of data points such as booster pumps, storage tanks, pressure reducing valves, and others constantly provide operational statistics including water pressure, tank capacity, and more. This vast amount of data can be difficult to analyze in its entirety, especially to detect issues in the distribution system. PCA was …

Thermal Analysis Of Lead Zirconate Titanate Thin Films Using Digital Image Correlation., Brek J. Meuris Dec 2011

Thermal Analysis Of Lead Zirconate Titanate Thin Films Using Digital Image Correlation., Brek J. Meuris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT), known for its ferroelectric properties, is widely used in micro-electromechanical (MEMS) and nano-electromechanical (NEMS) devices. PZT is a ceramic material that is most commonly found in its sol gel form, which allows for a relatively simple and cost-effective means of deposition and device fabrication. The material properties of PZT have been subject to significant research; however, the material properties of PZT sol gels remain largely unknown. In an effort to further understand thermal strain development, a combination of thermal loading and digital image correlation (DIC) were used to analyze the mechanical response of PZT sol gel …

Fem Modeling Of A Concrete Arch Bridge., Christina Allgeier Perez Dec 2011

Fem Modeling Of A Concrete Arch Bridge., Christina Allgeier Perez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Physics doctoral project seeks to reduce the uncertainty of inaccurate visual bridge inspections by producing a remote sensor program to determine and monitor the changes in health of a specified bridge. The Eastern Parkway Bridge was determined as the first bridge to test. As part of this project, a computer-aided analysis of the studied bridge was created using the simulation program ANSYS to assist in documenting the areas requiring the most attention. The model also offered supporting evidence to back the frequencies registered by the optical sensors to ensure proper functioning of the device. Furthermore, the model provided a …

The Impact Of Public Credit Programs On Brazilian Firms, Joao Alberto Denegri, Alessandro Maffioli, Cesar M. Rodriguez Dec 2011

The Impact Of Public Credit Programs On Brazilian Firms, Joao Alberto Denegri, Alessandro Maffioli, Cesar M. Rodriguez

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper analyzes the effectiveness of public credit lines in promoting the performances of Brazilian firms. We focus on the impact of the credit lines managed by BNDES and FINEP in fostering growth measured in terms of employment, labor productivity and export. For this purpose, we use a unique panel data set developed by the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA), which includes information on both firm-level performances and access to public credit lines. This particular data setting allows us to use quasi-experimental techniques to control for selection bias when estimating the impact of the public credit lines. The core …
