A Critical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Administrative Rules For Gang-Related Activities In Middle And High Schools, David Thomas Chiprany
A Critical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Administrative Rules For Gang-Related Activities In Middle And High Schools, David Thomas Chiprany
Dissertations
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse reported that 35 percent of middle school students and 45 percent of high school students say that there are students who are affiliated with gangs or who consider themselves to be affiliated with gangs in their schools (Arciaga, Sakamoto, & Jones, 2010). Gangs are increasingly violent and criminally involved and their impact on the school environment negatively influences student performance (National Gang Center, 2010a). As juveniles engage in criminal activity, the justice system has developed a set of laws and consequences in an effort to suppress the behavior. Schools followed the lead …
The Effect Of Teacher Retention On Student Achievement In Third Grade Reading/Language Arts, Kathy Bang Sellers
The Effect Of Teacher Retention On Student Achievement In Third Grade Reading/Language Arts, Kathy Bang Sellers
Dissertations
The United States government has placed emphasis on the placement of highly qualified teachers within each classroom through the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This becomes more difficult when teachers become frustrated for various reasons and leave the profession of teaching before gaining the necessary experience to positively impact student achievement.
The purpose of the study was to examine the possible relationship between teacher retention, teachers staying within the teaching profession, and the effect it has on student achievement. The study is based on individual teachers' class summary reports from the 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010 …

The Relationship Between Special Education Teachers' Perceptions Of Principal Leadership Behaviors And The Achievement Of Students With Disabilities, Margaret Elizabeth Constantino
Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine special education teacher perceptions of principals’ instructional leadership behaviors and students’ academic achievement on the Georgia Comprehensive Criterion-Referenced Tests. The researcher sought to determine if a relationship between specific instructional leadership practices in the areas of setting direction, influencing others, and redesigning the organization as performed by the principal and as perceived by their teachers is related to the achievement of special education subgroups in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. Special educators from elementary schools, identified by the principals, were surveyed to measure the extent to which they perceived their principal exhibited specific …

Hybridizing Jurisdiction, Scott Dodson
Hybridizing Jurisdiction, Scott Dodson
Faculty Publications
Federal jurisdiction – the “power” of the court – is seen as something separate and unique. As such, it has a litany of special effects that define jurisdictionality as the antipode of nonjurisdictionality. The resulting conceptualization is that jurisdictionality and nonjurisdictionality occupy mutually exclusive theoretical and doctrinal space. In a recent Article in Stanford Law Review, I refuted this rigid dichotomy of jurisdictionality and nonjurisdictionality by explaining that nonjurisdictional rules can be “hybridized” with any – or even all – of the attributes of jurisdictionality.
This Article drops the other shoe. Jurisdictional rules can be hybridized, too, and in myriad …

Invasion Triangle: An Organizational Framework For Species Invasion, Lora B. Perkins, Elizabeth A. Leger, Robert S. Nowak
Invasion Triangle: An Organizational Framework For Species Invasion, Lora B. Perkins, Elizabeth A. Leger, Robert S. Nowak
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
Species invasion is a complex, multifactor process. To encapsulate this complexity into an intuitively appealing, simple, and straightforward manner, we present an organizational framework in the form of an invasion triangle. The invasion triangle is an adaptation of the disease triangle used by plant pathologists to help envision and evaluate interactions among a host, a pathogen, and an environment. Our modification of this framework for invasive species incorporates the major processes that result in invasion as the three sides of the triangle: (1) attributes of the potential invader; (2) biotic characteristics of a potentially invaded site; and (3) environmental conditions …
How Money For Legal Scholarship Disadvantages Feminism, Martha T. Mccluskey
How Money For Legal Scholarship Disadvantages Feminism, Martha T. Mccluskey
Journal Articles
A dramatic infusion of outside money has shaped legal theory over the last several decades, largely to the detriment of feminist theory. Nonetheless, the pervasive influence of this funding is largely ignored in scholarly discussions of legal theory. This denial helps reinforce the marginal position of feminist scholarship and of women in legal theory. Conservative activists and funders have understood the central role of developing community culture and institutions, and have helped shift the prevailing framework for discussion of many questions of theory and policy through substantial investments in law-and-economics centers and in the Federalist Society. Comparing the institutional resources …

Gingival Crevicular Fluid (Gcf) Levels Of Interleukin-6 (Il-6), Soluble Glycoprotein 130 (Sgp130), And Soluble Interleukin-6 Receptor (Sil-6r) During Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Mathue Gene Faulkner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement requires the precise coordination of a multitude of biological factors in order for proper bone remodeling to occur. Cytokines, such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), play a critical role in the communication necessary for both bone resorption and bone apposition. IL-6 reacts with receptor proteins, such as soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R), on target cells in order to transmit signals important to both osteoclast and osteoblast activities. Soluble glycoprotein 130 (sgp130), on the other hand, acts as a natural inhibitor to IL-6 activity. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the levels of IL-6, sIL-6R, and sgp130 …
Study Of Feature Selection Algorithms For Text-Categorization, Kandarp Dave
Study Of Feature Selection Algorithms For Text-Categorization, Kandarp Dave
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis will discuss feature selection algorithms for text-categorization. Feature selection algorithms are very important, as they can make-or-break a categorization engine. The feature selection algorithms that will be discussed in this thesis are Document Frequency, Information Gain, Chi Squared, Mutual Information, NGL (Ng-Goh-Low) coefficient, and GSS (Galavotti-Sebastiani-Simi) coefficient . The general idea of any feature selection algorithm is to determine importance of words using some measure that can keep informative words, and remove non-informative words, which can then help the text-categorization engine categorize a document, D , into some category, C . These feature selection methods are explained, implemented, …
Towards Failure Free Design: An Analysis Of Risk Mitigation Communication, Daniel Krus, Katie Grantham
Towards Failure Free Design: An Analysis Of Risk Mitigation Communication, Daniel Krus, Katie Grantham
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In order to ensure that risk mitigation strategies are properly communicated to and understood by those who would use them in future designs, a common language of risk mitigation should exist. This paper focuses on a set of elements for describing risk mitigation strategies based on a linguistic analysis of the information such strategies must communicate to the design team. Sample strategies are then decomposed into these attributes and evaluated using the Gricean cooperation principle, relevance theory, and functional analysis theories from the pragmatics sub-field of linguistics. using the deficiencies found from this analysis, a format for risk mitigation strategies …

Mechanics Of Interaction, Ryota Takemura
Mechanics Of Interaction, Ryota Takemura
Theses
My work focuses on the senses that we take for granted when we experience art. We often disregard how our bodies work in relation to living our daily lives. In my piece, the Mechanics of Interaction, I highlight the experience of intertwined senses, in particular sight, touch, and sound. My thesis sculpture, the Mechanics of Interaction, is based on an attempt to avoid a purely visual experience of art. I try to redirect the audience away from the hierarchy of senses where sight is privileged. Many artworks tend to accentuate the combination of vision and thought as an "expression." Sight …
Mixed Integral-Differential Skin-Effect Models For Peec Electromagnetic Solver, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli, Lijun Jiang
Mixed Integral-Differential Skin-Effect Models For Peec Electromagnetic Solver, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Efficient modeling of the broadband skin-effect for conducting 3D shapes is a challenging issue for the solution of large electromagnetic problems. The inclusion of such models in an EM solver can be very costly in compute time and memory requirements. Several properties of a model are desirable for the solution of practical problems such as the broadband frequency domain or the time domain applicability. In this paper, we present a model which meets some of these challenges and which is suitable for the PEEC solution method. © 2011 IEEE.

Validation Of The Triply Selective Fading Channel Model Through A Mimo Test Bed And Experimental Results, Saurav Subedi, Huang Lou, Fei Ren, Mingxi Wang, Y. Rosa Zheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is often triply selective, meaning that it has spatial, temporal and inter-tap correlation. the temporal correlation is well characterized by its Doppler spectrum, but spatial and inter-tap correlation and their impact on MIMO channels are less studied in the literature. a MIMO testbed has been established to measure the impulse response of MIMO channels and an estimation method is developed to quantitatively measure the correlation matrices from experimental data. © 2011 IEEE.

Economics Working Papers
This paper examines the research and career of the late Warren J. Samuels (1933-2011), an influential institutionalist economist in the Wisconsin John Commons tradition and well-known historian and methodologist of economics. It discusses four main positions Samuels developed and held regarding the history of economic thought as intellectual history, the theory of economic policy, methodological pluralism, and the invisible hand doctrine. Among the views considered are: his matrix approach to meaningfulness, his characterization of intellectual systems, his emphasis on the centrality of the social order, his theory of economic policy as a neglected subject, his discourse analysis of language, his …

Heinzelmännchen Oder Schoko-Kuchen? Practicing The (Nearly) Lost Art Of Translation In The Business German Classroom, Sandra L. Summers
Global Business Languages
In today’s foreign language curriculum, translation exercises (once a staple of language instruction) have been neglected, if not completely dropped. However, German employers who hire American interns expect them to regularly translate business correspondence or even interpret for visitors. In this article I make a case for reincorporating translation training into the business language curriculum and offer suggestions and examples on how to enhance lesson plans with effective exercises.

Promoting Cultural Awareness In An International Business Program Through Foreign Language Communication, Mary Vigier, Nancy Smoller Le Floch
Global Business Languages
The article examines a module developed over the past 20 years at a French management school to show how culturally based learning activities in the foreign language classroom can improve the school’s management training curriculum. Through debates, role plays, and discussions, the module improves students’ communicative skills and enhances their comprehension of self and others. The assignments aid students in making sense of unfamiliar contexts. By developing cultural awareness in addition to linguistic fluency, the class contributes to the school’s mission to train future business professionals to become open-minded and thereby to operate more effectively in today’s global business environment.

Exploratory Study In Pilot Communications: Verbal Versus Texting Communication, Lauren J. Steele
Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications
Text messaging has been the cause of numerous vehicle accidents, and studies have been done in simulated driving tests to support this. The use of iPads in the cockpit has increased since the technology has been introduced and the proposed research seeks to investigate whether an iPad causes distraction for pilots. This study explored the differences in two different forms of communication – verbal and texting. Primary errors were in altitude deviations during text communication. Text messaging in the cockpit is not necessarily a distraction for pilots, but takes away from the scan of instruments resulting in errors.
