Attentional control ensures that neuronal processes prioritize the most relevant stimulus in a given environment. Controlling which stimulus is attended thus originates from neurons encoding the relevance of stimuli, i.e. their expected value, in hand with neurons encoding contextual information about stimulus locations, features, and rules that guide the conditional allocation of attention. Here, we examined how these distinct processes are encoded and integrated in macaque prefrontal cortex (PFC) by mapping their functional topographies at the time of attentional stimulus selection. We find confined clusters of neurons in ventromedial PFC (vmPFC) that predominantly convey stimulus valuation information during attention shifts. …

In late 2005, Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) was tasked with the command of the NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit (R3MMU) on Kandahar Airfield in southern Afghanistan. Preparations drew on past experience and planning. Eight complete hospital contingents were trained and deployed in rotation. Near-reality simulation training was undertaken with the combat brigade, including complete deployment of the field hospital in the exercise area. Standard operating procedures (SOP) were developed and applied by each rotation so successfully that they were adopted by the new command in late 2009. The Canadian period at R3MMU had the highest survival rate ever …

Perceived Parental Attachment And Achievement Motivation, Mena Bal, Imants Barušs
Psychology
A significant amount of research in attachment theory has been devoted to factors affecting academic achievement, but less attention has been given to the role of attachment in the relation between academic achievement and achievement motivation. The current preliminary study examined the role of perceived parental attachment in achievement motivation. Self-report data obtained from the Parental Attachment Questionnaire, Achievement Goals Questionnaire, and the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory were collected from 50 university students with a mean age of 18.8 yr. Correlation and regression analyses indicated that parental facilitation of independence correlated significantly and negatively with fear of failure. Results yielded …
Dynamic Server Allocation At Parallel Queues, Susan E. Martonosi
Dynamic Server Allocation At Parallel Queues, Susan E. Martonosi
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We explore whether dynamically reassigning servers to parallel queues in response to queue imbalances can reduce average waiting time in those queues. We use approximate dynamic programming methods to determine when servers should be switched, and we compare the performance of such dynamic allocations to that of a pre-scheduled deterministic allocation. Testing our method on both synthetic data and data from airport security checkpoints at Boston Logan International Airport, we find that in situations where the uncertainty in customer arrival rates is significant, dynamically reallocating servers can substantially reduce waiting time. Moreover, we find that intuitive switching strategies that are …

Microblogging For Strengthening A Virtual Learning Community In An Online Course, Yu-Chang Hsu, Yu-Hui Ching
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper examines how a microblogging tool (i.e., Twitter) can be effectively used to strengthen a virtual learning community (VLC) in the two sections of a fully online graduate course. Students in this course were consisted of K-12 teachers, school technology specialists, corporate trainers, and military personnel. The microblogging activities were designed to allow quick peer interaction to build the momentum of social learning in the VLC. In this study, we collected quantitative data on sense of community through a Likert scale survey, and rich qualitative data on students' perception about microblogging activities. It was found that students’ sense of …

A General Target For Mvps: Unsupported And Unnecessary, Curtis H. Flather, Gregory D. Hayward, Steven R. Beissinger, Philip A. Stephens
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
In a recent article in TREE [1], we reviewed evidence for a consistent standardized estimate of minimum viable populations (MVPs) across taxa [2–4] and found that the universal MVP of 5000 adults advocated by Traill et al. [5] was unsupported by reanalyses of their data. We identified shortcomings in the original analyses, and found substantial uncertainty in standardized MVP estimates, both within populations of the same species and among species. We concluded that neither data nor theory supported a generally applicable MVP.
No evidence refuting the technical problems that we identified in their original analyzes was presented by Brook …

Disability & Aging
In 2009, the Office of Elder Services, Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), was awarded a grant from the Administration on Aging (AoA) under its Community Living Program (CLP). The overall goal of the CLP announcement was to strengthen the capacity of the Aging Network to target and serve individuals at highest risk of residential facility placement by offering flexible services including consumer directed options. Over the last five years, options counseling has evolved from a general set of activities and functions within AAAs/ADRCs to a more standardized and generally accepted role within the Aging Network. With the …
Wind Turbines And Health, Richard Philp
Wind Turbines And Health, Richard Philp
Data and Test Instruments
In an effort to reduce the polluting effects of coal-fired electrical generators the Province of Ontario passed the Green Energy Act in 2009. Included in the act were clauses that removed authority from regional governments to control the placement of wind turbine or solar panel 'farms'. In concequence, forests of wind turbines sprang up throughout rural Ontario, angering rural residents and the tourist industry. Despite government claims that low frequency noise (LFN) posed no risks to health, hundreds of complaints quickly surfaced from people experiencing sleep disruption, headache, dizziness, and a host of other neurobehavioural adverse effects. This article reviews …

Sovereign Wealth Funds: An Exploratory Study Of Their Behavior, Ali Fatemi, Iraj Fooladi, Nargess Kayhani
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Sovereign wealth funds have recently moved to the front and center of discussion, both within the investment world and the political arena. In this paper we evaluate the differences and common features of these funds. Utilizing an ownership database, we probe the ownership, geographic, and industry concentration of the funds deployed by these entities. We also compare and contrast the main features of two of the largest sovereign wealth funds.
Minority Small-Firm Credit Applicants: Does Persistence Pay?, Grace Kim
Minority Small-Firm Credit Applicants: Does Persistence Pay?, Grace Kim
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
When credit application experiences are examined, minority-owned small firms are not the discouraged borrowers that credit outcome studies generally suggest. This paper examines repeated application for credit by small firms. Univariate statistical analysis reveals that persistence is necessary but insufficient for minority firms to be successful credit applicants. At the same time, minority-owned firms overall were more likely than white-owned firms to make repeated attempts to obtain credit, though successful minority applicants actually required fewer applications than their white cohorts. Multivariate regression also finds that different firm, lender, banking relationship, and loan characteristics affect the continued search for credit by …

Antitrypanosomal Activities And Cytotoxicity Of Some Novel Imido-Substituted 1,4-Naphthoquinone Derivatives, Clarence Lee
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
The antitrypanosomal activities, cytotoxicity, and selectivity indices of eleven imido-substituted 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives and nifurtimox have been studied. Compared to nifurtimox (IC(50) = 10.67 μM), all the imido-naphthoquinone analogs (IMDNQ1-IMDNQ11) are more potent on Trypanosoma cruzi with IC50 values ranging from 0.7 μM to 6.1 μM (p < 0.05). Studies of the cytotoxic activities of these compounds on a Balb/C 3T3 mouse fibroblast cell line revealed that four of these compounds, IMDNQ1, IMDNQ2, IMDNQ3, and IMDNQ10 displayed selectivity indices of 60.25, 53.97, 31.83, and 275.3, respectively, rendering them significantly (p < 0.05) more selective in inhibiting the parasite growth than nifurtimox (selectivity index = 10.86).

Worldwide Distribution Of Allelic Variation At The Progesterone Receptor Locus And The Incidence Of Female Reproductive Cancers, Fatimah Linda Collier Jackson
Worldwide Distribution Of Allelic Variation At The Progesterone Receptor Locus And The Incidence Of Female Reproductive Cancers, Fatimah Linda Collier Jackson
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Global patterns of the incidence of cancer are often attributed to environmental and lifestyle differences between regions. Less attention has been given to global patterns of allelic variation of genes that may contribute to the risk of developing cancer. We genotyped samples from 21 populations for four variants of the progesterone receptor (PR) gene. One is an Alu insertion in intron 7 which defines the PROGINS haplotype. The others include a promoter region SNP 331+ G/A (rs10895068), a haplotype defining T/C substitution in intron 6 (rs561650), and an A/T substitution (rs608995) in the 3' untranslated region of the gene. All variants …

Moral Performances: Melodrama And Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Jeffrey Taylor Pusch
Dissertations
Despite a high number of ticket sales, theater reviews, and innumerable letters and diary entries detailing trips to the theater, the stereotype that theater in nineteenth-century America was almost culturally invisible continued well into the twentieth century. Indeed, a scan of anthologies of American literature fails to yield any examples of nineteenth-century drama, even though figures like Henry James were also theater critics and playwrights. Just as it did in American life, theater exhibits a strong presence in the literature of the time. Considering theater’s pervasiveness, this dissertation seeks to restore it to its proper place in our study of …

Characteristics Of Serial Title Changes And Recognition Of New Serial Works: Theoretical And Practical Implications, Mavis B. Molto
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
The paper reports findings from a study to identify characteristics of serials with title changes and then make recommendations for recognizing new works for these serials. Findings show title changes occur due to underlying subject, function, corporate, geographic, frequency, or format changes, with 80.8% of the changes being subject or function changes. It is recommended that reasons for title changes be determined from clear statements in text or elsewhere, and that new works be recognized based upon the requirements of a definition of a work. With the FRBR definition, a new work would be recognized only for a significant subject …
Sioux Falls Downtown Design Guidelines: Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Colin Punt
Sioux Falls Downtown Design Guidelines: Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Colin Punt
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
In the late 1980s, Sioux Falls, South Dakota recommitted to its downtown, removed a dead pedestrian mall, and joined the National Main Street program. The city‘s downtown revival efforts have been largely successful in the past twenty-some years, but this success has rendered the current downtown design guidelines from the early 1990s both function-ally and aesthetically outdated. The original city ordinance written in conjunction with the design guidelines has given both the City Planning Department and the Downtown Design Review Committee, which is appointed by the Director of Planning and administered by Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc., very little power to …

Greeted Like Liberators: Media, Metaphor, And Myth In The Rhetorical Construction Of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Charles Franklin Bisbee
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
Journalistic performance in covering the presidential argument to undertake Operation Iraqi Freedom drew almost instantaneous criticism from within the profession. The general line of criticism held that journalists failed a “watchdog” standard of applying scrutiny to the rhetoric of public officials in terms of fact-based and legitimate argumentation. Alleged causes, in the case of Operation Iraqi Freedom, are usually rooted in al-Qaeda’s September 11, 2001 terroristic attacks inside the United States. Some critics submitted that post-attack journalistic “patriotism” granted President George W. Bush an overly-generous benefit of doubt in framing an American response. Others faulted journalistic norms. But the criticism …

Identifying Barriers And Incentives Related To Attending The Performing Arts: An Examination Of First Year College Students, Laura J. Sweet
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
Young adults entering their first year of academic study beyond high school face seemingly limitless opportunities. For the first time, they’re on their own: deciding everything from when to eat to where to study and what to do in their free time. Campuses are rich with possibilities. From official student organizations and clubs, to impromptu pizza parties and dorm floor trivia contests, daily decisions create the experiences that shape the life to come. On many large campuses, alongside academic buildings are art galleries and performance spaces. Research shows that early exposures to the arts lead to increased engagement during student …
