Perceived Ideological Bias In The College Classroom And The Role Of Student Reflective Thinking: A Proposed Model, Darren L. Linville, Joseph P. Mazer Dec 2011

Perceived Ideological Bias In The College Classroom And The Role Of Student Reflective Thinking: A Proposed Model, Darren L. Linville, Joseph P. Mazer

Publications

The role ideology plays in the university classroom is a continual issue of debate. A common public perception has been that academics are a liberal elite, and that they, in the words of conservative activist David Horowitz, “behave as political advocates in the classroom, express opinions in a partisan manner on controversial issues irrelevant to the academic subject, and even grade students in a manner designed to enforce their conformity to professorial prejudices” (2007, p. 188). The Chronicle of Higher Education demonstrated how pervasive this view has become with a 2004 public opinion poll that found 51% of 1,000 individuals …

What Is Really New In The “New” Urban Environment?, Nombuso Dlamini, Natalie Davey, Audrey Hudson, Samuel Tecle

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Established in 2009, The Jean Augustine Chair in Education in the New Urban Environment presented the learning community opportunity to define new urbanism through debates, conversations and other learning encounters. As the inaugural chair, Dlamini began conversations with faculty, students and community in order to unpack the meaning of the new urban environment and its associated characteristics and encounters. This article follows ongoing conversations between, Dlamini and three graduate students from her urban education class, which tackled these and many other questions throughout the course. Following the seminar, we find ourselves continually questioning what is meant by new and if …

L’ÉDucation À La ToléRance Dans Les Programmes D’ÉTudes En Vigueur Au QuéBec, Simon Lavoie, France Jutras

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions Of An International Practicum Experience In Italian Schools: Benefits Of A Short-Term Placement With Faculty Support, Maria Cantalini-Williams, Mary Lynn Tessaro

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This study examines the perceptions of teacher candidates (student teachers) participating in a faculty-supervised, international teaching placement in Italian schools. Survey responses and journal reflections, supported by faculty field notes indicate that the benefits could be categorized in four main areas such as: the development of resourcefulness and resilience; increased familiarity with the conditions of international teaching employment; a greater awareness of cultural literacy and comparative education; and an enhancement of language sensitivities and strategies for communicating and teaching. Recommendations suggest that professional growth of the teacher candidates is dependent on sufficient preparation, faculty support and immersion in the experience. …

Shifting Aims Of Aid To Education, Christian M. Dasilva Dec 2011

Shifting Aims Of Aid To Education, Christian M. Dasilva

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper examines the profound and steady influence of aid and aid modalities on the education agenda in Africa and argues that, ultimately, the broader intent of Education for All as advocated at Jomtien and Dakar was narrowed to an almost singular focus on Universal Primary Education. This narrowing phenomenon is attributed to donor obsession with targets and comes at the expense of true ownership while compromising quality and upstream linkages in the education systems of Tanzania and other African countries. The paper concludes with some of the lessons learned and possible future orientations of aid to education for development. …

An Integrative Model Of Excessive Reassurance Seeking And Negative Feedback Seeking In The Development And Maintenance Of Depression., Lyndsay E Evraire, David J A Dozois Dec 2011

An Integrative Model Of Excessive Reassurance Seeking And Negative Feedback Seeking In The Development And Maintenance Of Depression., Lyndsay E Evraire, David J A Dozois

Psychology Publications

Depression and interpersonal dysfunction are inextricably linked. Interpersonal behaviors in individuals with depression, specifically excessive reassurance seeking (ERS) and negative feedback seeking (NFS), have recently emerged as possible risk factors for interpersonal rejection and future depression. However, existing models integrating ERS and NFS in individuals with depression lack empirical support and fail to provide an adequate explanation for the negative social and psychological consequences that concurrent ERS and NFS create. The proposed model, based on the bias and accuracy literature in close relationships, suggests that individuals with depression desire and elicit global enhancement (through ERS) and specific verification (through NFS) …

Fiorotto, Ignatia B. Van Den Veyver

Paediatrics Publications

Epigenetic mechanisms may play an important role in the developmental programming of adult-onset chronic metabolic diseases resulting from suboptimal fetal nutrition, but the exact molecular mechanisms are incompletely understood. Given the central role of the liver in metabolic regulation, we investigated whether chronic maternal dietary protein restriction has long-term effects on liver gene expression in the offspring. We fed adult C57BL/6J dams ad libitum an 8% maternal lowprotein (MLP) or 20% protein control diet (C) from 4 wk prior to mating until the end of lactation. Male pups were weaned to standard nonpurified diet and singly housed at 21 d …

Immunization With Porphyromonas Gingivalis Enolase Induces Autoimmunity To Mammalian Α-Enolase And Arthritis In Dr4-Ie-Transgenic Mice, Andrew J. Kinloch, Saba Alzabin, William Brintnell, Elizabeth Wilson, Lillian Barra, Natalia Wegner, David A. Bell, Ewa Cairns, Patrick J. Venables

Bone and Joint Institute

Objective To examine the hypothesis that the subset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) characterized by antibodies to citrullinated α-enolase is mediated by Porphyromonas gingivalis enolase in the context of DR4 alleles. Methods Recombinant human α-enolase and P gingivalis enolase, either citrullinated or uncitrullinated, were used to immunize DR4-IE-transgenic mice and control mice (class II major histocompatibility complex-deficient [class II MHC -/-] and C57BL/6 wild-type mice). Arthritis was quantified by measurement of ankle swelling in the hind paws and histologic examination. Serum IgG reactivity with α-enolase and citrullinated α-enolase was assayed by Western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Antibodies to peptide …
