Fracture Behavior Across Interfaces In Seal Lithologies, Elizabeth S. Petrie, James P. Evans, Tamara Jeppson Dec 2011

Fracture Behavior Across Interfaces In Seal Lithologies, Elizabeth S. Petrie, James P. Evans, Tamara Jeppson

Graduate Student Posters

Faults and fracture networks at depth are important fluid pathways, especially in fine-grained, low permeability seal lithologies. Discontinues in sealing lithologies can create seal bypass systems, leading to the failure of CO2 geosequestration sites or hydrocarbon traps. We characterize the occurrence of and changes in discontinuity patterns and the associated changes in elastic moduli across sedimentologic interfaces to document the importance of these discontinuities for fluid management in the subsurface and potential for re-activation in high-pressure injection scenarios. We evaluate well-exposed, fine-grained, low-permeability Mesozoic and Paleozoic units that are seals of potential CO2 repositories on the Colorado Plateau …

Making History Anew: Feminine Melodrama In Eileen Chang's Love In A Fallen City, Li Guo Dec 2011

Making History Anew: Feminine Melodrama In Eileen Chang's Love In A Fallen City, Li Guo

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This essay will explore the narrative mode of feminine melodrama in Love in a Fallen City, a novella by the Shanghainese writer Eileen Chang (1920–1995). Chang has gained international fame for her depiction of Chinese women in the tumultuous transitional period prior to the modern era, especially traditional women figures that are in stark contrast with the New Woman ideal portrayed by her contemporary writers. Born in Shanghai, Chang was a descendant of an eminent late imperial official and received western education in Hong Kong under the influence of her open-minded mother. A literary sensation at the age of twenty-five, …

The Incorrigible Social Meaning Of Video Game Imagery, Stephanie Patridge Dec 2011

The Incorrigible Social Meaning Of Video Game Imagery, Stephanie Patridge

Religion & Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, I consider a particular amoralist challenge against those who would morally criticize our single-player video play, viz., 'come on, it's only a game!' The amoralist challenge with which I engage gains strength from two facts: the activities to which the amoralist lays claim are only those that do not involve interactions with other rational or sentient creatures, and the amoralist concedes that there may be extrinsic, consequentialist considerations that support legitimate moral criticisms. I argue that the amoralist is mistaken and that there are non-consequentialist resources for morally evaluating our single-player game play. On my view, some …

Antitrust Review Of The At&T/T-Mobile Transaction, Maurice Stucke, Allen Grunes Dec 2011

Antitrust Review Of The At&T/T-Mobile Transaction, Maurice Stucke, Allen Grunes

Scholarly Works

In this Essay, we review AT&T Inc.’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA, Inc., under federal merger law, under the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission’s 2010 Horizontal Merger Guidelines, and with a focus on possible remedies. We find, under a rule of law approach, that the proposed acquisition is presumptively anticompetitive, and the merging parties in their public disclosures have failed to overcome this presumption. Next we find that under the Merger Guidelines, there is reason to believe that the transaction may result in higher prices to consumers under several different plausible theories. Finally, we turn …

Welfare Enhancing Regulation Exemptions, Murat C. Mungan Dec 2011

Welfare Enhancing Regulation Exemptions, Murat C. Mungan

Scholarly Publications

Sanctions for regulation violations are used to deter conduct which could potentially result in great social harms. This practice over-deters talented entities and under-deters untalented entities, which leads to social losses. This paper analyzes whether and how such social losses can be mitigated. I show that this can be achieved by allowing regulatees to purchase passes exempting them from regulations at appropriate prices.

Multiple Attractors For A Competitive System Of Rational Difference Equations In The Plane, S. Kalabušić, M. R.S. Kulenovič, E. Pilav Dec 2011

Multiple Attractors For A Competitive System Of Rational Difference Equations In The Plane, S. Kalabušić, M. R.S. Kulenovič, E. Pilav

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate global dynamics of the following systems of difference equations x n + 1 = 1 x n / (B 1 x n + y n), y n + 1 = ( 2 + 2 y n) / (A 2 + x n), n = 0, 1, 2, , where the parameters 1, B 1, 2, 2, 2, A 2 are positive numbers, and initial conditions x 0 and y 0 are arbitrary nonnegative numbers such that x 0 + y 0 0. We show that this system has up to three equilibrium points with various dynamics which depends …

An Extension Of The Rishon Model, Paul Finkler Dec 2011

An Extension Of The Rishon Model, Paul Finkler

Paul Finkler Papers

We present an extension of the Rishon Model of Harari, et. al. [1] [2] [3] In that model, the first generation leptons and quarks are each made from three rishons of two varieties, T and V as follows: ve = V V V , e+ = T T T , d = T V V , and u = T T V . In addition to the original rishons and their anti-rishons T and V , we introduce the dark rishon X and its anti-rishon X; all have spin 1/2.

An exciting possibility that emerges from this idea …

Hacking, Theft, And Corporate Negligence: Making The Case For Mandatory Encryption Of Personal Information, Stephen J. Rancourt Dec 2011

Hacking, Theft, And Corporate Negligence: Making The Case For Mandatory Encryption Of Personal Information, Stephen J. Rancourt

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Information is being created at an astonishing rate, and the electronic storage of personal data is at the forefront of this growth. Social security numbers, home and email addresses, and financial records are almost universally stored electronically, whether on internal servers, hard drives, or portable devices, such as flash drives and diskettes. The ubiquity of this information has undoubtedly benefitted commerce, but it has not come without drawbacks. As recent evidence suggests, personal information is increasingly vulnerable to hacking and other forms of theft, putting the consumer at serious risk of identity theft and misuse of their personal information. The …

Feminizing Presidents: Joseph Keppler And Gender In Gilded Age Political Cartoons, Jerome Gonzalez Dec 2011

Feminizing Presidents: Joseph Keppler And Gender In Gilded Age Political Cartoons, Jerome Gonzalez

American Studies Senior Theses

Amid the crowded newsstands of American cities in the late nineteenth century, the average reader flipping through a copy of Puck, a weekly humor magazine devoted to political and social issues, may have been surprised to see an unusual print: that of the President of the United States depicted in women’s clothing, with feminine features, performing a womanly task! These few drawings, alluding to both literary and social ideas, done by the Austrian immigrant artist Joseph Keppler, appeared in his Puck magazine in the years 1877, 1880, and 1884, coinciding around an election year. While Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James …

Mechanical Stretch And Shear Flow Induced Reorganization And Recruitment Of Fibronectin In Fibroblasts, Robert L. Steward, Chao Min Cheng, Jonathan D. Ye, Robert M. Bellin, Philip R. Leduc Dec 2011

Mechanical Stretch And Shear Flow Induced Reorganization And Recruitment Of Fibronectin In Fibroblasts, Robert L. Steward, Chao Min Cheng, Jonathan D. Ye, Robert M. Bellin, Philip R. Leduc

Biology Department Faculty Scholarship

It was our objective to study the role of mechanical stimulation on fibronectin (FN) reorganization and recruitment by exposing fibroblasts to shear fluid flow and equibiaxial stretch. Mechanical stimulation was also combined with a Rho inhibitor to probe their coupled effects on FN. Mechanically stimulated cells revealed a localization of FN around the cell periphery as well as an increase in FN fibril formation. Mechanical stimulation coupled with chemical stimulation also revealed an increase in FN fibrils around the cell periphery. Complimentary to this, fibroblasts exposed to fluid shear stress structurally rearranged pre-coated surface FN, but unstimulated and stretched cells …

Our agenda is to offer a conceptual/theoretical understanding of the post-structural approach to literature interpretation/performance. We make a practice of the theory in the construction of the paper—we allow the text to speak for itself. We provide a juxtaposition numerous authors. We focus on the text rather than the author. We offer the following reading instructions: Please read the text as a whole and skimming the referential notations. The citations are provided for readers who wish to further the topic. We realize we depart from the traditional academic writing form. The common occurrence of the style in competition underscores the …

Background

Saliva of blood sucking arthropods contains compounds that antagonize their hosts' hemostasis, which include platelet aggregation, vasoconstriction and blood clotting; saliva of these organisms also has anti-inflammatory and immunomodullatory properties. Perhaps because hosts mount an active immune response against these compounds, the diversity of these compounds is large even among related blood sucking species. Because of these properties, saliva helps blood feeding as well as help the establishment of pathogens that can be transmitted during blood feeding.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We have obtained 1,626,969 reads by pyrosequencing a salivary gland cDNA library from adult females Amblyomma maculatum ticks at different …

Quasi‐Hidden Markov Model And Its Applications In Cluster Analysis Of Earthquake Catalogs, Zhengxiao Wu Dec 2011

Quasi‐Hidden Markov Model And Its Applications In Cluster Analysis Of Earthquake Catalogs, Zhengxiao Wu

Research Collection School of Economics

We identify a broad class of models, quasi-hidden Markov models (QHMMs), which include hidden Markov models (HMMs) as special cases. Applying the QHMM framework, this paper studies how an earthquake cluster propagates statistically. Two QHMMs are used to describe two different propagating patterns. The “mother-and-kids” model regards the first shock in an earthquake cluster as “mother” and the aftershocks as “kids,” which occur in a neighborhood centered by the mother. In the “domino” model, however, the next aftershock strikes in a neighborhood centered by the most recent previous earthquake in the cluster, and therefore aftershocks act like dominoes. As the …
