Small But Mighty: Headwaters Are Vital To Stream Network Biodiversity At Two Levels Of Organization, Debra S. Finn, Núria Bonada, Cesc Múrria, Jane M. Hughes Dec 2011

Small But Mighty: Headwaters Are Vital To Stream Network Biodiversity At Two Levels Of Organization, Debra S. Finn, Núria Bonada, Cesc Múrria, Jane M. Hughes

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Headwaters (stream orders 12) traditionally have been considered depauperate compared to mid-order streams (orders 34)a conclusion that arises from a perception of streams as linear systems and emphasizes change in average α (local) diversity along streams. We hypothesized an opposite pattern for β (among-site) diversity and suggest that headwaters might account for a large degree of basin-scale biodiversity if considered within the more realistic framework of streams as branching networks. We assembled pre-existing biodiversity data from across the globe to test this hypothesis broadly at the population-genetic (mitochondrial haplotype diversity within species) and community (species/taxonomic diversity) levels, with a focus …

Gross Indecency: The Three Trials Of Oscar Wilde, December 9-10, 2011, Theatre Arts Discipline

Theatre Programs

University of Minnesota, Morris production of Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde by Moisés Kaufman and directed by Jessie Sherman.

Synopsis: In early 1895, the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of Wilde's young lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, left a card at Wilde's club bearing the phrase "posing somdomite." Wilde sued the Marquess for criminal libel. The defense denounced Wilde's art and literature as immoral, leading the prosecuting attorney to declare, "It would appear that what is on trial is not Lord Queensberry but Mr. Wilde's art!" In the end Queensberry was acquitted, and evidence that had been gathered …

Student Engagement In New Zealand’S Universities, Ali Radloff

Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE)

Although the numbers of students entering bachelor level study in New Zealand is growing and is high relative to OECD averages, the number of students leaving with a qualification is low compared to many other countries. Data from the Ministry of Education show that completion rates are relatively low, particularly among certain groups of students. Around one-third of students who began a bachelor degree in 2002 had not completed the degree, or a degree at the same or a higher level, eight years after starting. Completion rates are higher among Asian New Zealand students, but much lower among Maori and …

Muscle-Fiber Type And Blood Oxidative Stress After Eccentric Exercise, John Quindry, Lindsey Miller, Graham Mcginnis, Megan Irwin, Charles Dumke, Meir Magal, N, Travis Triplett, Jeffrey Mcbride, Zea Urbiztondo Dec 2011

Muscle-Fiber Type And Blood Oxidative Stress After Eccentric Exercise, John Quindry, Lindsey Miller, Graham Mcginnis, Megan Irwin, Charles Dumke, Meir Magal, N, Travis Triplett, Jeffrey Mcbride, Zea Urbiztondo

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications

Acute strength exercise elicits a transient oxidative stress, but the factors underlying the magnitude of this response remain unknown. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether muscle-fiber type relates to the magnitude of blood oxidative stress after eccentric muscle activity. Eleven college-age men performed 3 sets of 50 eccentric knee-extensions. Blood samples taken pre-, post-, and 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr postexercise were assayed for comparison of muscle damage and oxidative-stress biomarkers including protein carbonyls (PCs). Vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were assayed for relative percentage of slow-and fast-twitch muscle fibers. There was a mixed fiber composition (Type …

The Overtraining Syndrome In Endurance Athletes; A Guide For Coaches And Athletic Trainers For Prevention And Treatment, Shannon M. Hughes

Graduate Theses

Training may be the most vital aspect of competition for serious athletes. The goal of training is to improve athletic performance by improving physiological performance, but there are instances when training can push an athlete physiologically beyond the threshold of tolerance. Most coaches and athletic trainers are aware that overtraining leads to physical injury when little recovery time is allowed, but what is still unclear is how overtraining affects the emotional and psychological stability of the athlete. The purpose of this guide is to educate coaches, athletic trainers, and even athletes, on the methods to potentially avoid overtraining, to recognize …
